December 2023

December 2023

THE MISSION OF TEMPLE SOLEL IS TO BE A VIBRANT, INCLUSIVE AND ENGAGED REFORM COMMUNITY, GROUNDED IN RELATIONSHIPS AND DEEDS, AND ELEVATED BY SHABBAT AND TORAH. Writing something to be read two weeks into the future is an act of faith. For that matter, so is anticipating tomorrow. Each breath, each day, is a blessing. I am on an airplane, flying back from the March for Israel rally in Washington, DC. I was one of an estimated 290,000 people, mostly Jews. With less than a week’s notice, we gathered from across the United States to stand together on America's sacred ground of the National Mall. Jews are not monolithic. Yet on this day, we stood as one. I was proud and privileged to join the Phoenix contingent (organized under Rich Kasper’s leadership by the Center for Jewish Philanthropy) in common cause: for Israel’s right to exist as a sovereign nation, against Jew hatred, and for the release of the hostages. The most immediate and urgent of these being the release of the hostages. The family of Israel and the Jewish people is holding our collective breath for the estimated 240 hostages being held by Hamas in underground tunnels in Gaza. The most moving voices at the March for Israel were from families whose sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, cousins were kidnapped on October 7th – Israel’s day of infamy. Can any of us imagine? Rachel Goldberg, whose son Hersh Goldberg-Polin was seriously injured before being taken hostage, said, “We all have third-degree burns on our souls.” She asked how the world community could quietly accept the captivity of, “…the 240 human beings from almost 30 countries…these children of God who range in age from 9 months to 87 years – Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists and Hindus.” Our neighbors two doors down at Valley Presbyterian Church are not passively standing by. Senior Pastor, David Joynt and members of VPC are hosting a Bring Them Home Exhibition and Service in collaboration with Temple Solel on Sunday, December 3, 11:45 AM - 12:45 PM. Spearheaded by our members, Shira and Nadav Razon, leaders within the Israeli American community, this will be a special exhibit representing each of the 240 hostages. This is between our two communities, not a public community event. In advance of this article you will have seen more details. Our Cantorial Soloist, Todd Herzog, will join with VPC’s musical counterpart to sing, Bring Them Home, a rendition of Les Miserables’ Bring Him Home. [Todd will sing this as well, the same evening, with the Phoenix Opera Company at Temple Solel’s Bright Lights of Broadway!] Come together in community, with our brothers and sisters at VPC. Each breath is a blessing - BRING THEM HOME!!! -Rabbi John A. Linder Bring Them Home [photo taken by fellow marcher]

George Gershwin incorporated the music he heard growing up on the streets of Harlem with klezmer instrumentation and his own unique combination of ethnic and liturgical sounds to form a new genre of music. It’s no secret that Jewish composers have written some of the most popular songs of all time. In order to celebrate these composers, we will come together on Sunday, December 3 at 5pm in our social hall, to join together in community and to sing these melodies of the stage and screen. By doing so, we will fulfill our legacy of finding solace in music. Please join me and members of the Phoenix Opera Company as we tour the Jewish composers of Broadway. We can’t see music, we can’t grasp it in our hands, but we can feel it working through us and the world. As such, music represents our connection to the divine, to each other, to everything. Music is a wordless prayer that opens up our imaginations to the divine source of all life.” -Joey Weisenberg Dear Solel Family, At the darkest times, Jews have turned to music to bring healing and to find joy in life, even when that joy is most elusive. Some of the most beautiful melodies arose out of the Holocaust, out of the struggle, out of the oppression. It should come as no surprise that music still has a very powerful role to play now, as we face this latest challenge in the world. When Jews first came to the United States, they created Yiddish theater. Over time, this evolved into the artform that we now know as the Broadway musical. The music was formed out of their own experiences in Europe, combined with the uniquely

4 D e c e m b e r 2 0 2 3 / K i s l e v - Te v e t 5 7 8 4 Holiday Lights! For small children, Hanukkah is experienced through the senses: beautiful candles shining, the taste of fried foods (i.e, delicious, sweet, sticky sufganiyot or donut holes, latkes or fried zucchini) and evening snuggles with family. Introduce your little ones to Hanukkah with stories like Where is Baby's Dreidel and Hanukkah Lights. The only ritual component of Hanukkah is lighting the hanukkiah and saying the blessings. Everything else is optional – fried food, tales of Jewish heroism, gifts and gelt. Ritually speaking, it’s all about the light, and for each of eight nights, bringing a little more of it into the world. The candles are lit from left to right. Traditionally, for the whole period the candles are burning (about a half hour), you’re not supposed to work. Take that half hour and enjoy the glow. Watch the candles burn, sing a song together, eat a zucchini stick, play a game, read a book. The sixth night of Hanukkah always coincides with a new moon, making this night the darkest night of Hanukkah. Hanukkah teaches that with darkness comes the possibility of light. Arlo Guthrie said, “You can’t have a light without a dark to stick it in.” Spread some light with a friend by making and delivering a goodie bag. Place your menorah near a window and share your light with everyone. The real miracle of Hanukkah was that we tried to light the menorah given the small amount of oil available. So, the Jewish answer to a world that feels dark is to go ahead and shine some light. Enjoy the holiday. Linda Irish Solel Preschool Director Special Speaker: Sarah Kader, Community Manager for ADL Arizona Friday, December 15, 6:15pm Shabbat Service Confronting Antisemitism Today Sarah Kader is the head of the ADL (AntiDefamation League) office in Phoenix. She will share with us a brief history of the ADL and their mission. Sarah will also talk about what the ADL does to combat antisemitism in our local community and share some information on what the ADL is seeing in Arizona in regards to antisemitic extremists. The talk will include ways that we in our community can fight antisemitism and hate together. On this last day of Chanukah, we are reminded that one of the ways we keep the Jewish flame burning bright is by remaining informed about concerns to our community.

D e c e m b e r 2 0 2 3 / K i s l e v - Te v e t 5 7 8 4 5 Raker Religious School meets 26 times during a school year. We start at 9:30 and end at Noon. The teachers usually arrive early to get prepared and be ready to give their students a morning of learning, fun and community. Just this last Sunday, November 12, Raker was a place of many moving parts! We had our second graders participate in t'filah, our 2/3 grade PACT program (Parents And Children Together) , a speaker, Jessica Bozek, from JFCS to talk to our teens, our 8/9 grade Madrichim class visiting our neighbors at Valley Presbyterian Church as part of their comparative religion class, the Boker Tov Bistro, and our 7th graders investing more time in the making of their own Talit! So who are these very giving souls who want to be with your students in order to pass on their love of being Jewish? Here are a few, more to come… Mason Marks or who we call "Cartoon Mason", grew up in a Reform household, in New Mexico, celebrating the Jewish holidays. Wanting to learn more, he took a spiritual pilgrimage to Israel as a young adult, earning his Master's Degree in Jewish Education. After completing his education, he moved to Scottsdale and is now working as our second grade teacher, and Engagement specialist. Barbara Friedman, our fifth grade teacher for the last two years, came to Temple Solel through her volunteer work with the Welcome Volunteer Center. She has very strong feelings about Jewish traditions and values which she passed on to her 5 children. Those same traditions and values are what she brings to her class each and every Sunday. Arielle Nelson is a mass communications and journalism major at ASU. She literally grew up at Temple Solel, attending preschool and Raker religious school. She had her Bat Mitzvah, was Confirmed and was an outstanding Madricha in our 8-12 grade Madrichim program. Her hope is to provide all of the children and their families who attend Temple Solel with the same loving feeling and sense of community that she has experienced and has had the privilege of having while at Temple Solel. Arielle is our first grade teacher! Vicki Miles is our third grade teacher at Raker! The core of her Jewishness comes from Pirkei Avot, the sayings of our people, specifically Rabbi Tarfon who said, "It is not your responsibility to finish the work, but neither are you free to desist from it." Vicki and her family are steadfast volunteers for the unsheltered. She hopes that her words and actions encourage her students to become Partners with God and participate in tzedakah projects that will make the world a little better for all. As you walk the halls of Raker, you will hear students practicing prayers, learning Hebrew, singing songs, discussing social issues, solving puzzles, making chicken soup, sharing Shabbat boxes, and making Shabbat keepsakes! To our outstanding teachers, Todah Rabah! Tobee Waxenberg Raker Religious School Director WHO ARE THE WONDERFUL TEACHERS OF RAKER? The 7th Graders are Sewing Their Own Tallit! The 7th grade students of Raker Religious School are sewing their own tallit this December and January, and they could use your help! If anybody can volunteer to help sew, it would be greatly appreciated! This is an amazing opportunity to help our students deepen their connection to Judaism, and make it personal! If you are interested and would like more information, please reach out to Kerry Taylor-Herzog at [email protected].

6 D e c e m b e r 2 0 2 3 / K i s l e v - Te v e t 5 7 8 4 Temple Solel Book Club Greetings, Book Lovers! We, the little Hasmoneans of Solel Book Club, wish you a luminous Chanukah. Although we won't meet this month, here is a a preview of upcoming books for you who love to get a head start. After December break, on January 16, 2024 we will have a 6:00 p.m. potluck with a longer book: Gospel: A Novel by Wilton Barnhardt. Steve Slogoff has enthusiastically recommended it as "a thinking person's provocative and enjoyable read." Amazon summarizes it: "Gospel concerns the search for a lost first-century gospel of the Bible, a document that could shake the foundations of Christianity. Wilton Barnhardt's narrative races through three continents, nine countries, and dozens of colorful locales, as two characters―shy theological student Lucy Dantan and hard-drinking, disillusioned ex-Jesuit Patrick O'Hanrahan―pursue rumors and clues about the gospel's whereabouts and contents. In the end, what they discover will challenge and forever change the nature of faith." Why does a Jewish book group read this big novel? Because it's "an intellectual detective story with the erudition of Umberto Eco and the grand swirling entertainment of a nineteenth-century novel [that is] terrifically funny." And there's a rabbi. You may want to start reading soon. On February 20, we will discuss a memoir, Soles of A Survivor by Nhi Aronheim. Aronheim, a Vietnamese refugee, endured ordeals en route to becoming American. Her book "is at once a personal and universal journal in which we learn how the author ultimately finds a home for her heart with her beloved, and a home for her soul within the Jewish community, a community she makes stronger and kinder. In its pages, the reader cannot help but feel that renewal is ever a possibility.” —Rabbi B. Elka Abrahamson, president, The Wexner Foundation. And who doesn't need a little renewal? On March 19, we will explore another immigrant story, From Africa to Zion: The Shepherd Boy Who Became Israel’s First Ethiopian-Born Journalist by Danny Abebe. According to the Jewish Book Council review, the "memoir offers a personal reflection on the challenges of [Abebe's] childhood journey from the village of Tilamado, through Sudan, and to the Jewish State. It also shares the complex, painful, and ultimately inspiring struggle the author has fought for integration and acceptance into Israeli society." Upcoming meetings: (in-person through May) April 16, May 21, August 20, September 17. I Mah Jongg Purchase Mah Jongg cards for 2024 Hadassah is selling 2024 Mah Jongg cards. D e c e m b e r 2 0 2 3 / K i s l e v - Te v e t 5 7 8 4 7 “Rainbow-Colored Jews” at Torah Study Volunteer Recognition Volunteers are an essential part of Temple Solel. We would like to thank the following volunteers for their time and efforts: Birthday Calls Erica Bonime Knitting for a Purpose Lois Bell Carol Brillman Jill Loebel Beverly Nathan Margie Rahilly Linda Ribnik Judy Schaffert Beth Sennett Reva Steinberg Saving Amy Joan Matlock Would you like to volunteer at some point in the future? We’d love to have you! Email [email protected], and we’ll add you to our volunteer email list for upcoming opportunities. Thank You! Recently, I started calling myself a “rainbow-colored Jew” as a way to celebrate being LGBTQ and Jewish. This is a new identity label for me. For most of my life, I called myself a “white male.” But I came to realize that my gender is more open and fluid than just being “male.” I possess an ever-shifting mix of masculine and feminine qualities. Plus, “white” is too bland for me! My spirit is much more colorful and vibrant. Happily, history’s first rainbow-colored Jew appears in our Torah Study readings this month – Joseph! Traditional Jewish texts portray him as a gender fluid person. The Torah notes Joseph’s masculine name and describes him as “well-built and handsome.” But he wears a technicolor coat, a garment typically worn by tribal princesses (2 Samuel 13:18). Plus, according to midrashim, Joseph pencils his eyes and curls his hair, “looking beautiful like his mother” (Genesis Rabbah 84-86). Being creative in his appearance helps Joseph celebrate his truth. Additionally, Joseph’s moral character is rainbowhued thanks to his willingness to forgive others. In the Torah, the rainbow is a symbol of forgiveness. Following the flood in Genesis, God creates a rainbow to represent a covenant of forgiveness granted to all earth beings for all time. This is Judaism’s concept of Original Forgiveness. No matter what we do, divine mercy is guaranteed. Similarly, Joseph does not seek revenge against his brothers for their cruelty. Though they sold him into slavery, it led to him becoming a leader of Egypt. At the end of his story, Joseph embraces his brothers, saying that it all worked out for the best: “God meant it for good.” Thankfully, Joseph’s many great qualities inspire rainbow-colored Jews to thrive today. Torah Study meets on ZOOM and in person every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. See ENUZ for Zoom link. Everyone is welcome! Matthew Kozinets

10 D e c e m b e r 2 0 2 3 / K i s l e v - Te v e t 5 7 8 4 Temple Solel Endowment Foundation Securing Our Future | December 2023 The end of the calendar year is an ideal time for personal reflection. A tune-up if you will from the contemplative work we do during the High Holidays. This is especially the case now as Jewish communities around the world and our congregation continue to reel from the events in Israel of October 7th. Thanks so much to our Temple Solel leadership for their wisdom, insight, and spiritual guidance as they help us navigate through this difficult time. Our synagogue has not missed a beat over the past two months. Shabbat services, the Raker Religious School, Bar and Bat-mitzvahs, Torah study classes, adult education opportunities, volunteer activities, and Preschool have continued without any hitches. The Temple Solel Endowment Foundation stands ready, willing, and able to support the temple during periods like we are currently experiencing. We do this in multiple ways including strategic collaboration with the Temple Board of Directors, connecting with our congregants, and financial support. Endowments are tasked with furthering the financial stability of non-profit organizations such as Temple Solel through fund raising and prudent investment policies. Among our many functions, we serve as a rainy-day fund that steps up during unforeseen events or crises impacting the synagogue family. One recent example is last month’s Temple Solel Endowment Foundation’s generous monetary support of the congregation’s commitment to additional security because of recent increases in antisemitic vitriol and actions. During this season of gratitude, despite the sorrow that many of us are feeling, please find a place in your hearts for Temple Solel and the Temple Solel Endowment Foundation. There are many ways to give in addition to year-end donations and legacy gifts. At a minimum, please make it a point to thank our security team and vendors when you see them for all that they do on our behalf. Best wishes from the entire the Temple Solel Endowment Foundation Board of Directors for a safe and restful holiday season. Dean Scheinert, Member Temple Solel Endowment Foundation Men of Solel Speaker Programs! December Speaker: Mayor Kate Gallego has a vision for Phoenix: she sees it as a place that is vibrant and growing, where every person is treated with dignity and respect. To realize this vision, she has two major goals. The first is to make Phoenix the most sustainable desert city in the United States. The second is to create good jobs through advocating smart business growth and investment. Please join us at Temple Solel on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. when Mayor Gallego will discuss “Phoenix’s Future in a time of Climate Change.” January Speaker: Terry Goddard is currently the President of the Central Arizona Water Conservation District, having served on its elected board since 2012. The board established policy and sets rates and taxes for the Central Arizona Project (CAP). CAP is the canal system that since 1985 has provided Colorado River water to central Arizona -- a major reason for the growth and prosperity of the region. The current drought and pending reallocation of water supplies in the Colorado Basin presents a serious challenge to central Arizona continuing to receive a reliable water supply. Mr. Goddard served as Mayor of Phoenix (1984 to 1990) and as the Arizona Attorney General (2003-2011). Please join us at Temple Solel on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. when Mr. Goddard will discuss “Crisis on the Colorado.” (Scan here to register for the Speaker Series)
