AUGUST 2022 / AV ELUL 5782

Shalom!

Camp Solel has officially ended and we have had a
wonderful camp this summer. We were able to bring
the AZ Puppet Theater, Deb’s Dragon’s, Funny Magic
for Kid’s and Toy Story of Event for some special
performances.

We are getting ready for another year of playing, growing and learning at The Solel Preschool beginning August
10th!

A few tips to help get ready for the new school year:
- Establish a routine of “early to bed “ and “school wake-up time” before school begins so your
child has time to adjust to the new schedule.
- Get appropriate gear for your preschooler. Let your child pick out a new backpack and together
write their name on it.
- Give your child a personal belonging of yours like a favorite scarf or bandana so they know you
will come back to get it.
- Talk and read about school. Share how much fun you had in school and answer any questions
they might have.
- Create/ practice a goodbye ritual for school drop off.
- Listen to your child’s worries or concerns.

We have many engaging programs available for our students and families. Anyone may attend our
monthly Tot Shabbats, our weekly Friday morning Shabbat service and our children’s services for Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

We have added enrichments back to our upcoming school year during our aftercare hours, from 1:00 to
3:00. Yoga, Little Scientists, First Steps Sports, Literacy Counts and Hebrew.
This year we will again have Mom’s night out, Dad’s night out, book fair, alumni Havdalah picnic and our
corn hole tournament. Go to our website for a calendar of all our events.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email or call!

-Linda Irish, Solel Preschool Director

We are opening the social hall to the Solel community for
light brunch and a chance to see all the ways to get involved
with the Temple at our exciting Engagement Fair!

This is an event for everybody at Temple Solel, from new
members to families that have been here for generations.

Each club and committee will have a table for congregants to

learn more about the fun and impactful things they do.

Everyone can sign-up to get involved in activities, clubs and

committees. Sunday, August 14th from 12 to 1!

The mission of Temple Solel is to be a vibrant, inclusive and engaged Reform community, grounded in
relationships and deeds, and elevated by Shabbat and Torah.

A Message from the Temple Endowment Foundation

When I was President of the Solel Board, I attended a regional biennial event in Southern California and found
myself roaming the afternoon sessions looking for a place to park my slightly weary body. I almost accidentally
settled into a session on Endowment Funds, which seemed to have more than a few empty seats.
I was fearful that the session would be dry and boring. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t. First, I learned that endowment
funds were a key to the financial well-being of many successful institutions – think Harvard, Yale, the Mayo
Clinic and even a few venerable Jewish congregations. I learned that they don’t exist for the exclusive benefit of
the great and large and that any congregation could (and should) have an active endowment fund.
Unfortunately, in many congregations, an endowment fund is viewed as a luxury because most
congregational fund-raising is centered on the here and now – instead of the hereafter. Endowment funds exist
separate from funds that a congregation relies upon in its annual budgeting. A temple’s annual budget is built upon
expected annual expenses that are to be met by annual income. However, an endowment fund exists as an entirely
independent enterprise from the temple itself.
An endowment fund has a separate charter from the congregation even though its mission is to aid the temple in a
manner that is consistent with the fund’s charter. In most instances, the charter of an endowment fund calls for
generating money or other assets that can be used to create streams of income that the fund may ultimately
contribute to the congregation. In that way, an endowment fund is almost like a separate congregant. It makes
contributions over time to benefit the congregation from its carefully managed funds.
The second awakening for me was that the easiest way to create the stream of funds for this
independent, but connected, entity was to ask for contributions. Huh? No manna from heaven? Again, the idea of
the present and the future merge. Most funds obtain assets in two ways.
Members can make contributions to funds while the members are living. Or, members can name the endowment
fund in their wills or other testamentary documents, using money or assets that they possess to meet their needs
while living and meeting charitable goals by contributing money to the endowment fund that they won’t need after
they die. This was slightly shocking to me. But the reasoning was unbelievably sound.
I came away from that session determined to
help create a strong, thriving endowment fund
for Solel that helps insure its long-term
viability by seeking present and long-term
contributions for an endowment fund that has a
life of its own.
-Ken Love

Caring Community News

For years, all of us have received birthday calls and wishes from Arlene Bonime, of blessed memory.
When her daughter, Erica, asked if the Caring Community could provide refreshments following the
Memorial Service on Sunday, July 17 th at 11:00 am, of course we said yes. A beautiful luncheon was
prepared by the following volunteers in our Caring Community: Susan Wine, Audrey Sobel, Robin Balon,
Linda Ribnik, Joan Matlock, Phyl Bolno, Sandy and Al Barkov, Jeanne Winograd, Joyce Lipner, Karin
Epstein, Sharon Levine, Marilyn Carson, Linda Wiener, Carol Brillman, Marilyn Strahl, Barbara
Wasserman, Jennett Kirkpatrick, Allison Collins, Milly Kaplan, Lois Bell, Miriam Weisman, Lauren
Mishlove, Nadelle Hanover, Maryann Bloom and Dottie Braun Cohen. Thanks to all who participated, I
couldn’t be prouder.
The Caring Community continues to reach out to folks who are experiencing life’s challenges. Meals are
provided as needed, bereavement support and help with Shivas is available and a new Visitation team
lead by Arleen Schwartz will be implemented in the fall. Should you be in need of our services, please
call the Temple Office or reach out to me at [email protected].

Rosh Chodesh- A Temple Solel Women’s Group

Women have historically celebrated Rosh Chodesh (the new moon/Hebrew month) as a
time to come together for fellowship, learning, blessings, and dialogue. At Temple Solel, we
gather (sometimes in person and sometimes on Zoom) usually on the Wednesday evening near
Rosh Chodesh. While Rosh Chodesh groups have most commonly been women’s groups,
Temple Solel (like many other congregations today) uses an inclusive definition of “woman” and
“female,” and we welcome trans women, genderqueer women, and non-binary individuals who
want to join us.
Our first event this year will be an October gathering in a Temple member’s Sukkah on October
12. More information will be coming about that in eNUZ in September. After that our meeting
dates for gathering this year are: 11/16, 12/21, 1/18, 2/22, 4/19 and 5/17. We have yet to
decide if these will be in-person or on Zoom. On March 22 we will gather for our wonderful
annual Women’s Seder. We hope you will put these dates on your calendar!
