May 2023

Two years ago, as I prepared to become President of Temple Solel, I had the privilege of attending the Scheidt Seminar for incoming temple presidents. Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of the URJ, in his keynote address, said when we serve on the Board of our synagogues we are forming sacred partnerships. This is a commitment to building and nurturing relationships that recognizes each of us as individuals and our desire to inspire sacred action in our communities. Sacred partnerships are built and nurtured through the Jewish values of mutual respect, trust, honesty, communication, transparency, confidentiality, empathy, and vulnerability. As I look back at the sacred partnerships that were formed among temple members, the temple board, our teachers, dedicated staff, beloved clergy and our Executive Director in the last two years, I feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. It has been an honor to serve alongside such dedicated professionals, lay leadership and wonderful community members. The past two years have seen a reemergence of our programming, worship services and community involvement and we continue to look for ways to engage our community. During this time Temple Solel has continued to grow and thrive and maintain a solid financial footing under the leadership of Peter Pishko and Treasurer Phil Hawkes. Going forward let us continue to nurture our sacred partnerships, elevating our work to a level of holiness for the benefit of Temple Solel. It has been an honor to work with our wonderful clergy team of Rabbi Linder, Rabbi Stiel and Cantorial Soloist Todd Herzog, Executive Director Peter Pishko and the entire staff. New and returning Board members will continue to oversee the work at Temple Solel under the leadership of President Eve Danoff and Executive Vice President Jennet Kirkpatrick. We are in very good hands. As a community, help us keep our Jewish values at the front of hard conversations and difficult decisions, and remember that our job is to care for our temple but also for one another. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature.” ― Anne Frank This month we celebrate the holiday of Shavuot. This is another one of our festival holidays that is connected with agriculture and the harvest. It was traditional for the farmers of the land to bring their first fruits to be offered at the Temple. As they delivered these first fruits, the priests would be singing and welcome them into the Temple with words of the psalms. We have adapted many of our religious practices from these agrarian roots into spiritual practices. Yet, in the process, we have lost the connection to the original source of these traditions. There is a fast-growing field of study that describes a phenomenon called ‘nature deficit disorder.’ The symptoms include: a diminished use of the senses, attention difficulties, conditions of obesity, and higher rates of emotional and physical illnesses. We like to pretend that we have evolved past the point of needing a connection to nature, but we cannot separate ourselves from life and God. These days, we have to work a little harder to maintain our connection to the earth. But it is still very much a possibility. We can take off our shoes and feel the earth on our feet. We can teach our children where the food they eat comes from. We can grow our own food, eat fruits and vegetables that are in season, and reconnect with the source of our abundance. We can fill our homes with flowers, as is the tradition on Shabbat and Shavuot. We can express our gratitude for moments of awe in nature, like beautiful sunsets and blossoms of spring. In this way, we remember who we are and where we have come from. The traditions of Shavuot give us another opportunity to return to God and nature. May we all enjoy learning and growing together this holiday season, and acknowledge our connection to the earth, to God, to music, and to one another… In season, Todd Herzog Cantorial Soloist Coming Together in Torah Please Note… Temple Solel will be closed May 26th in honor of Shavuot and May 29th in honor of Memorial Day.

4 M ay 2 0 2 3 / I ya r - S i va n 5 7 8 3 May is Celebration Month for our Preschoolers! Teacher Appreciation and Mother’s Day are both celebrated in May. Both these celebrations honor special people in the lives of a preschooler. Here are some ideas that will help teachers and Moms feel special, loved and recognized on their special days. Bring a special treat Write a note and/or draw a picture Give flowers Make a craft project Make a gift basket with their favorite things, snacks, lotions, perfumes, music CD Make a happy memories box—decorate a box or a tin and fill it with favorite memory pictures or written notes Make a donation to a favorite charity or organization Make a video telling your teacher or your Mom about a fun memory or something special that happened during the past year These are just a few suggestions. I am sure children will have many other fun and crazy ideas to share. Fun and love are the important factors in children making the special people in their lives feel important. Celebrating Prekindergarten graduation with a ceremony is a great opportunity to acknowledge learning and to recognize milestones and educational achievements. It helps give children a sense of accomplishment and pride. Teaching about graduation also helps children transition into kindergarten. Easing children into the transition to school is a huge benefit in their future learning experiences. Graduation is such a special milestone in a child’s life. Let’s also celebrate successfully making it through another wonderful school year. Have a great summer! 6 M ay 2 0 2 3 / I ya r - S i va n 5 7 8 3 Temple Solel Book Club Fellow Book Lovers, Thanks to Reva Steinberg for leading the April 11 discussion. This month we will meet on May 16 at 6 p.m. for our dairy/pareve potluck and will open Zoom at 6:30 to discuss Unstoppable by Joshua M. Greene, about Holocaust survivor Siggi Wilzig who arrived in NY penniless and built a $4 billion oil-and-banking empire. With a foreword by Holocaust scholar Debra Lipstadt. (https://www.goodreads.com/book/ show/54396808-unstoppable) This book comes highly recommended. On June 20 and for our July and August meetings we will be back exclusively on Zoom. June's selection is The Lost Shtetl by Max Gross, recommended by Myra Baum. This debut novel won the National Jewish Book Award and the Jewish Fiction Award from the Association of Jewish Libraries. It was "written with the fearless imagination of Michael Chabon and the piercing humor of Gary Shteyngart—about a small Jewish village in the Polish forest that is so secluded no one knows it exists . . . until now."--Amazon.com On July 18 we will read Fly Already, a short story collection by Etgar Keret. “An Israeli writer is making short stories fun again. Etgar Keret doesn’t avoid a punch line. The fiction writer and This American Life regular tackles Big Important Subjects in his work—death, family, war, etc.—but he does so in a way that’s not, well, a bummer . . . By embracing the comic and the absurd, Keret achieves something rare among modern short-story writers: He’s actually worth reading.” – Men's Journal To get a good headstart on a long book, start reading The Weight of Ink by Rachel Kadish for August 15. There will be no meeting in September due to the High Holidays. Happy reading, Judy Schaffert [email protected] Rosh Chodesh SivanWelcoming The New Month of Sivan Study Piece: Learning about Hagar Wednesday, May 17, 2023 6:30-7:45pm – Food, Socializing, Learning & Blessing the New Month Dear Rosh Chodesh Sisters – This month, we invite you to read a short and insightful chapter about the biblical character Hagar before we meet. We will then discuss the piece together at our meeting. Please bring a dish to share for our potluck dinner. We will meet in the Temple Solel library. Registration information is in eNUZ. The Hagar chapter will be sent upon registration. This is our last gathering before we break for the summer. *We use an inclusive definition of “woman” and “female” and welcome trans women, genderqueer women and non-binary people.

M ay 2 0 2 3 / I ya r - S i va n 5 7 8 3 7 “Gifts from the Heart” at Torah Study This month in Torah Study we celebrate Shavuot, a festival which carries the theme: “Gifts from the heart are precious no matter their size.” According to the Hasidic master Sefat Emet, two gifts were given on Shavuot in ancient times. God gave the Jewish people the holy Torah and, in return, the Jews gave God the first fruits of their harvest. This festival is called Z’man Matan Torateinu (“the time of the giving of Torah”), but in heaven it is called Yom HaBikkurim (“the day of first fruits”). Sefat Emet explains that since harvest was the best gift that humans could offer, God loved it as much as the whole Torah. Amazingly, this same theme is expressed in Megillat Ruth, traditionally read on Shavuot. In the story, Ruth wants to present a gift to her mother-in-law Naomi. But the vicissitudes of life have left Ruth with nothing. She has become a destitute wanderer. And so, Ruth offers to Naomi her only remaining gift – her loyalty. She says: “Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God” (Ruth 1:16). Sometimes, love is the only gift we have to offer, but it is the gift that means the most. When we love each other, we fulfill the whole Torah. May schedule: Hybrid Torah Study meets In-Person in the Temple Solel library and also on Zoom every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. See eNUZ for Zoom link. Summer schedule: Beginning June 3, Torah Study returns to a Zoom-Only format. Tune in to see our fellow learners join the rabbis in leading the class. It’s a great chance to see them share insights of Torah along with their own creative gifts from the heart. Every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. via Zoom. M ay 2 0 2 3 / I ya r - S i va n 5 7 8 3 11 Temple Solel Endowment Foundation Securing Our Future | Month & Year Why Donate to the Endowment Fund? I recently heard a story that really hit home for me that I thought I would share. A Jewish charity emissary one visited a man in hopes of receiving a donation. The man turned down the emissary's plea. Respectfully, the emissary asked if he could share a Torah insight. "During the time of our Holy Temple in Jerusalem, a Jewish livestock owner was obligated to tithe his flock. This was done by the livestock owner putting all the cattle into an enclosed pen. He would then open up the door to the pen. As each animal exited, he would count: one, two, three, etc. When he counted the tenth animal, he would mark it with red dye. That animal was then set aside to be brought to sale and the proceeds donated." The emissary then asked. "Why make the rancher endure this whole process of penning the animals and driving them out one by one? Wouldn't it make more sense to just take ten-percent of the total amount of the sales?" The answer is that there is a profound message being conveyed to the livestock owner by virtue of the process. The emissary explained "As each animal goes out the door, it is as if the Almighty is telling the person. 'One is for you, two is for you, three is for you...' After giving the owner nine, the Almighty then asks for only one. After getting to keep nine, the rancher realizes how much of his wealth comes from G-d and though he is giving, he is getting much more." Donating to the Temple's Endowment Fund is a longterm way of giving back the wealth we have received from G-d. No matter the amount, big or small, G-d has given each one of us so very much. A way of counting our blessings? Yes. A mitzvah done? Absolutely. Though you are giving, G-d has given you so much more.
