Temple Solel Intergenerational Israel Trip
May 27-June 7, 2023

(Susya the Flower Man, Jerusalem – photo, Rabbi Linder)

Whether a first-timer to Israel, or returning once again, this trip will deepen your relationship with the
miracle that is Israel today. From Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, from the Golan Heights to Masada and the Dead
Sea, experience the ancient and the modern; better understand the challenges facing Israel and all its citizens;
revel in all of Israel’s remarkable accomplishments! And, of course, savor the taste of the best falafel you’ll
ever eat!
We will be blessed to be led by one of Israel’s most extraordinary tour guides, Uri Feinberg. Believe me,
your experience will be enriched by Uri’s knowledge, his creativity, his kindness and attention to every
detail. He’ll become a lifelong friend!
Planning for the trip is at the preliminary stage – itinerary and costs will be forthcoming.
If the trip peaks your interest, kindly send a direct email to Rabbi Linder (rabbilinder@temple solel.org). An
informational meeting will be scheduled for later in August. Stay tuned!
This will be a trip of a lifetime, returning home with lasting family memories and wonderful, new Temple
Solel friends!

The mission of Temple Solel is to be a vibrant, inclusive and engaged Reform community, grounded in
relationships and deeds, and elevated by Shabbat and Torah.
We see the divine spark in each individual by together:
Warmly welcoming all who enter
Nurturing lifelong learning
Creating joy through prayer and music
Celebrating holidays and sharing life cycles
Fostering a love of Israel, and
Working for tikkun olam — repairing the world

Hello Members of Temple Solel!
My name is Mason Marks, and I am your new community engagement director! Now

you may be asking yourself, who is this man in charge of engaging our community? Well, I am
glad you hypothetically asked yourself this question.

I am a 24-year-old Jewish lad who has recently returned from Israel where I studied Jew-
ish education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, taught English to elementary school chil-
dren in Petach Tikva, and learned Torah at Yeshiva Aish HaTorah next to the Kotel! I enjoy
reading, writing, and theatre (as a member of the audience, not onstage). I am originally from New Mexico, so I
feel very at home here in the Southwest!
Of all the Jewish values (and there are some GREAT ones) I strive to embody the energy of chesed, or lov-
ing-kindness. I think this is why I was brought to Temple Solel. I can tell from my two amazing weeks here that
the clergy, staff, and the members of Temple Solel care deeply about cultivating loving-kindness in the wonderful
Jewish community that exists here in Paradise Valley, and I am extraordinarily excited to help!
I look forward to meeting each and every member of Temple Solel and the greater Phoenix Jewish commu-
nity at large! I will be in contact with all community group volunteers soon. All other members please email me
at [email protected] if you have any activities or events you would like to organize or any fun ideas for the
Temple!

Here’s to a great summer; I heard it gets a little warm… All the best, Mason

Reform Movement’s Introduction to Judaism Class Now
Taking Fall Registrations

Join rabbis from Congregation Beth Israel, Temple Kol Ami, Temple Chai, and Temple Solel for
the URJ’s Introduction to Judaism class. Over 15 week sessions (plus two special shabbat
celebrations), you will have the chance to learn in-depth about Jewish traditions, rituals, holidays,
life cycle events, and beliefs. This course is a great option for those who are entering Jewish fami-
lies, considering conversion, want to brush up on their Jewish knowledge, or are simply
curious about Judaism and would like to know more. The course will take place on Tuesday
nights at Congregation Beth Israel (either in person or virtually) from 7-9pm, beginning Septem-
ber 13th. The class is $280 (or $200 if you belong to a Phoenix-area Reform congregation).

A Message from the Temple Endowment

Dear Temple Member,
When I think of Temple Solel, so many memories pass through my head. Sukkah building.
Uplifting Friday night services. Dancing with the Torah on Simchat Torah. But most of all
community. We are so very lucky to have a community such as Temple Solel to share life’s ups,
and downs, and everything in between. Our Temple is there for us. We need it. We should
cherish it. Can you imagine living where there was no access to community? Someone before
you and me paved the way for us. Someone before us gave us the treasure of Temple Solel. We
should be obligated to return the favor.
When Moses is taking the Israelites to the Promised Land, he speaks of what is to come; great
cities they did not build and houses full of treasures that they did not create. The Lord was
providing this for His people. Providing for the coming generations. We must do the
same. Giving to the Temple’s Endowment Fund ensures the next generations that they have
Temple Solel to make their own memories, their own growth in Torah. Giving to the Endowment
Fund is really the gift that keeps on giving. For every dollar you donate, it continues to grow and
prosper. Your single dollar can generate blessings for many generations to come. Please consider
making a special gift. Or, you can provide for us in your will with an actual dollar amount or a
percentage of your estate. Simply call your financial advisor for the best avenue for you.
Community is a fundamental part of Judaism and the Endowment Fund ensures the Temple
community for years to come. If you have any questions, please contact Robert Siamon
at [email protected]
Thank you for being part of my community.

This summer CAMP SOLEL KATAN will feature different places and ways to have adventures each of
the 8 weeks of camp. Hopefully you can create a summer adventure reading list like we adults received at
the end of school each year. In case you would like to keep up with our preschoolers, here are a few sug-
gestions to get you started.
Vacation in Paradies/Beach – example: Shave Ice in Hawaii (board book), Too Many Mangos by Tammy
Pailai
Magic – example: The Magic Hat by Mem Fox, The Magical Yet by Angela DiTerlizzi
Western – example: Cowboy Camp by Tammi Sauer, Good Night Cowboys (board book) by Adam Gam-

Safari – example: Goodnight Africa by Marquez Rey Ramirez, Safari, So Good!: All About African
Wildlife (Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library) by Bonnie Worth
Adventure on the Seven Seas – example: Pirate Boy (board book) by Eve Bunting, How to Be a Pirate by
Isaac Fitzgerald
Reading on grade-level by the end of third grade is one of the most critical milestones in education.
Donald Hernandez reported in Double Jeopardy, children who do not read proficiently by the end of third
grade are four times more likely to leave school without a diploma than proficient readers.
In preschool our job is to instill a love of reading and to increase reading readiness. Here are some easy
ways to accomplish this.

Read to the child.
Have the child "read" to you. Allow the child to create their own story based on the pictures they see

within the book.
Reread stories multiple times.
Omit words of a familiar story and allow the child to fill in the blank.
Allow the child to experiment with words.
Point to the words on the page as you read out loud to the child. This enables the child to understand

that sentences consist of separate words.
What a great way to enjoy time with your children or grandchildren out of the heat this summer.
JUST READ!!!!
