February 2024 / SHEVAT—ADAR I 5784 3 “Love transforms us. It makes us beautiful in the eyes of those who love us. It makes us real.” ~Rabbi Jonathan Sacks Dear Solel Family, As American Jews, it seems we are constantly being put in a position of how we choose to identify. Are we secular? Are we religious? Is it ok to celebrate Halloween? Do we have to dress up for Purim? In the month of February, we finally have a holiday where we don’t have to choose between being American and being Jewish. We can emphatically say, BOTH! Of course, I am talking about the holiday of Valentine’s Day. And whether you choose to embrace the sentimentality or wear black in protest, you can at least listen to some love songs written by people who are Jewish (either culturally, religiously, or both). You might choose to listen to a classic, like “Tonight” from West Side Story. Written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim for the 1960 motion picture, it’s a duet between Tony and Maria, who are dreaming of being together at last. Bernstein was not extremely observant, but did acknowledge that Judaism played a part in his spirituality. Sondheim was a secular Jew. Perhaps you’d choose something like “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere,” written by Bob Dylan in 1967 and performed by Joan Baez. Dylan has had a complicated relationship with Judaism, starting out as a cultural Jew, going into Messianism and Christianity, and eventually coming full circle. Or maybe you’re more adventurous, and you’d listen to Yo La Tengo’s “Our Way to Fall.” Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley, the band’s founders, are a secular Jewish married couple who formed the band on a whim and went on to become indie music darlings. Of course, what Valentine’s Day celebration would be complete without something from Leonard Cohen? His song, “Dance Me to the End of Love,” was originally inspired by the vision of classical musicians during the Holocaust who were forced to play as other prisoners were killed in the gas chambers. Only Cohen could somehow turn this into a love song as well as a tragic story. However you choose to celebrate the holiday, let music be a part of your experience. It has the power to engage the emotions and mark special occasions unlike anything else. Speaking of musical experiences, I’ll also be looking for singers to join me in the upcoming Purim spiel. I’ll be talking more about it more in next month’s article, but just wanted to plant the seeds now. I won’t mention any names, but it will be a very fun all-ages spiel with music from Time’s ‘Person of the Year.’ And yes, she’s dating a football player. Email me at [email protected] if you’re interested in singing and celebrating with me and the whole community. Until then, keep the romance alive! Cantorial Soloist Todd V. Herzog In song, Todd Herzog Cantorial Soloist

January always seems to go by so quickly as we welcome our families back from Winter Break and settle back into our routines. This January was filled with Snow Day fun and messages of acceptance, peace and caring that surrounds the Martin Luther King Jr Holiday. A celebration of Tu B’Shevat, the birthday of the trees, brought the month to a close. Tu B’Shevat is always a great reminder that we are transitioning from the Winter to the Spring. And while in a setting like Paradise Valley, Arizona that transition may not seem huge, in our setting of The Solel Preschool there is a noticeable transition in our students that takes place around this same time. Our students are growing…they look taller, sadly, many losing their baby faces. Their language skills are improving and they are reaching new developmental milestones. Our school-wide Tu B’Shevat Program allowed our students to get their hands dirty planting seeds and painting with nature. In addition they learned the importance of taking care of the earth. The lively discussions gave us the opportunity to see firsthand how our students are maturing as much as the trees that surround them. While learning about the Earth, trees and gardens inside our classrooms as part of our Tu B’Shevat curriculum The Solel Preschool Playground received its own garden…a musical garden. A gift donated by Preschool Parents Jason & Alexandria Dembow and their children Declan & Frankie, in memory of their cousin Sam Dembow, the mixture of musical flowers and mushrooms is a beautiful addition to our beloved playground. February 2024 / SHEVAT—ADAR I 5784 5 Dear Temple Raker Families, WHO ARE THE WONDERFUL TEACHERS OF RAKER? PART 2! • Allison Collins joined Temple Solel eight years ago when she moved from St. Louis. She knew Temple Solel was for her because of the vibrant music provided by Todd and the warm and caring welcome from Rabbi Linder at her first Torah Study. Over the years, Allison has engaged in many Solel programs; the Women's Seder, a teacher at Raker religious school, Zoom Hebrew, and now a B'Nai Mitzvah tutor. Allison loves working with the youth of our community, teaching our Jewish heritage. " L'dor vador", from one generation to the next! • Andrea Eisen is our Madrichim coordinator, 8/9 grade teacher, and Zoom Hebrew tutor for Raker. Ever since her experiences at URJ Eisner Camp in Massachusetts as a preteen, she developed a strong desire to help other kids see what a rich and beautiful religion Judaism is. Andrea is especially fond of working with teens post B'Nai Mitzvah in order to keep them connected to Solel and to enhance their level of Jewish understanding. • Maryn Herberg, one of our fourth grade teachers, is carrying on her love of Judaism by teaching in our Raker religious school. Her connection to Judaism stems from her family's celebrations and traditions. Being a Jew is who she is! • Natalie Waxenberg has been a teacher at Raker for ten years. Her love is fourth grade, which she has been teaching for many years; mainly because she introduces decoding of Hebrew to her students and delights in their growth and understanding of the Hebrew language. Natalie attended the University of Arizona and received a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree. She is currently working at the University of Advancing Technology along with being a Zoom Hebrew tutor. February events coming up for our Raker families; • Feb. 9 Madrichim Family Shabbat • Feb. 11 Derech Horim • Feb. 24 Our yearly Shabbat Hike for all of our families! T'filah, an easy hike, good food and community • Feb. 25 Fourth grade PACT • Feb. 28 RTC An exciting night for teens, off campus! Once again, thank you for your student's attendance at Raker. Consistency builds a sense of belonging to our Solel community, and with that comes a sense of being at home and feeling comfortable both in the Sanctuary and in the classroom. 6 February 2024 / SHEVAT—ADAR I 5784 February Zoom Events Jewish Meditation Tuesday February 13, 2024 February 27, 2024 10:00-10:30 am Lunch and Learn Wednesday February 7, 2024 February 14, 2024 February 21, 2024 12:00-1:00 pm (See Page 2) See eNUZ for links to all events listed. Temple Solel Book Club Greetings, Book Lovers! Thank you to Pam Hait and Steve Slogoff for leading our January discussion of Gospel: A Novel. On February 20, we will convene at the temple at 6 p.m. to enjoy a delicious dairy/pareve potluck and to discuss a wellreceived memoir, Soles of A Survivor by Nhi Aronheim. Twelveyear-old Nhi walked barefoot from her home in Vietnam, seeking a better life in America; the title refers to the physical scars from that ordeal. Her harrowing trip includes the trek through the Cambodian jungle, a raging storm, and Aronheim being dumped on a deserted island without water or food, then rescued fortuitously by a Thai military ship and spending two years in a Thai refugee camp. She makes her way to America and experiences culture shock. Aronheim’s journey to Judaism is also part of the story, but conflicts between her past and present, her attempt to reconcile her worlds, and her fearlessness in embracing change make for a dynamic and sympathetic drama. On March 19, we will turn to an Israeli non-fiction immigrant story, From Africa to Zion: The Shepherd Boy Who Became Israel’s First Ethiopian-Born Journalist by Danny Abebe. Danny grew up in a remote village and never knew his own date of birth yet managed to overcome adversity to become the first Ethiopian-born soldier in IDF Army Radio and the first Ethiopian -Israeli journalist. He worked for the Yediot Aharonot newspaper for years, filed hundreds of reports and investigations, and won prestigious prizes. Yet to this day he experiences prejudice and racism. On April 16 we will read a novel again, The Silverberg Business by Robert Freeman Wexler. It tells the tale of a Jewish private eye named Shannon who seeks to find one Silverberg. Silverberg has disappeared with money intended to create a haven for displaced Romanian Jews in the Texas of the late 1880s. The book busts genres by combining hard-boiled detective tale, Western, and magical realism. Looks like fun. Upcoming meetings: May 21 (in-person), August 20, September 17, October 15 (tentative), November 19 Happy reading, Judy Schaffert [email protected] “You Shall Tell It to Your Daughter” An Intergenerational Women’s Seder Save the Date: Sunday Evening April 7, 2024 More details in next Pathfinder
February 2024 / SHEVAT—ADAR I 5784 7 “Hospitality” at Torah Study Volunteer Recognition Volunteers are an essential part of Temple Solel. We would like to thank the following volunteers for their time and efforts: Birthday Calls Erica Bonime Knitting for a Purpose Lois Bell Carol Brillman Jill Loebel Beverly Nathan Margie Rahilly Linda Ribnik Judy Schaffert Beth Sennett Reva Steinberg Yahrzeit Notices Cynthia Marcus Would you like to volunteer at some point in the future? We’d love to have you! Email [email protected], and we’ll add you to our volunteer email list for upcoming opportunities. Thank You! This month, we read about Yitro, one of the many nonJews in the Torah who contribute to the creation of Jewish tradition. Yitro is a pagan priest who becomes Moses’ father-in-law. He is remembered as a guiding light of hospitality. In Exodus, Yitro warmly welcomes Moses into his home in Midian, offering food and shelter. Later, Yitro teaches us that hospitality should not be limited to the home. When he visits Moses at Mount Sinai, he brings his hospitality with him. At Mount Sinai, Yitro greets Moses, asking about his welfare. Yitro also listens to Moses’ account of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery. Then, in a remarkable show of ecumenical kindness, Yitro praises Moses’ deity. Yitro says: “Blessed be YHVH who delivered you from Pharaoh… now I know YHVH is greater than all the gods” (Exodus 18:10-11). Finally, Yitro brings food offerings to YHVH, which he and the Israelites eat together. This scene is amazing because Yitro is a pagan priest who typically worships other gods. But as an act of hospitality, Yitro sets aside his own personal beliefs to honor Moses’ belief in YHVH. Yitro teaches us that a great way to show respect for another person is to acknowledge and honor their faith. Kindness to others includes kindness to their need for a spiritual life. Certainly, Yitro’s loyalty to his own gods is not compromised by this gesture. He returns to his land and to his gods, feeling at peace with himself that he treated a fellow spiritual traveler with grace, having helped Moses feel seen, understood, and loved. A special IN-PERSON Torah Study will be held in the temple library with a bagel reception on Saturday, February 3 at 9:00 a.m. On all other Saturdays in February, we will meet on ZOOM. February 2024 / SHEVAT—ADAR I 5784 11 Temple Solel Endowment Foundation Securing Our Future | February 2024 The Month of Love & Contribution Wine and roses? See’s Candy or Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory? What about an Endowment Fund Contribution! Even though February is the LOVE month which many of us celebrate, it is not shared by all due to its recognition of a saint. Judaism certainly believes in celebrating love – whether that love is between our loved ones, our friends or by supporting our community for the future. Show your loved ones that the month of LOVE will last far longer with making a gift in their name. Your love, admiration and thoughtfulness of others will come through in an Endowment contribution. Your support for our Temple Solel Jewish Community via your gift will continue to grow for many years to follow. Our Temple Solel Endowment Fund supports the development and future needs of our Synagogue. It is your Tax Deductible contributions to the fund that make it possible. Our legacy will live on by contributing to the Endowment Fund. When you, or your estate gives a legacy gift - whether it’s through a bequest in your will, a portion of your IRA or another giving vehicle – you are creating an avenue for the continued vibrant Jewish community of Temple Solel for the next generation. Give love today by contributing to the Temple Solel Endowment Fund… AND… go ahead, a box of chocolates or a bouquet of flowers would be appreciated by someone you love too. Fondly, and follow my example of giving, Gail Zucker Board Member Contact Robert Simon for any questions at ([email protected]) “As our ancestors planted for us, so do we plant for future generations.” — Talmud Ta’anit 23A Temple Solel Raker Parents: Join us on February 11 As the Conversation about Raising Spiritual Children Continues Derech Horim (Parent’s Journeys) is a monthly opportunity for solel parents and guardians to get to know each other better and to study with the clergy and guest teachers.
