FOREWORD

JAN WESSENDORP 2

The title of the exhibition Aan het licht gebracht (Brought to light), is
merely an effort to make something known, rather than to present or
reveal something previously hidden or secret, to the public. Could it also
mean that someone is brought to a new insight of how to look at
something, I wonder...
While Jan Wessendorp is known for his impressive and large format
paintings, this exhibition shows some of his newest and smaller paintings,
along with a number of works on paper, drawings as well as collage made
out of his own drawings. The works range from the late 1980-s to the most
recent ones, made with different techniques ranging from the sculptural
expressionistic painting technique to the application of materials like
plexiglass pieces to his paintings.
The drawings and the collage pieces are presented in a open frame, on a
mat and many times beneathe a mount, with no sheet of glass seperating
the artworks with the spectator. This results in a heightend sense of
directness, as it also reveals the true colours and tangibility of the works.
The acrylic paint gives the drawings a painting quality, while at the same
time the paper, as the suppport media of the artworks, allows more subtle
drawing and colouring method.
With such collection of works the exhibition is in a sense a small cross
section of the oeuvre (body of art) of the artist Jan Wessendorp presented
to general public.

JAN WESSENDORP (NEDERLANDS)

Ondanks hun gedempte
emoties ervaart men angst, mededogen, geluk, eenzaamheid,
