The exhibition “Paper Matters” not only refers to the use of paper as art media, but
in a way also reflects the material as versatile medium to convey knowledge and/or
message. For this exhibition Gallery Lukisan invited two artists to to create new
works around the medium paper in spatial context.

Laura Casas Valle is a graphic artist, based in Arnhem, The Netherlands. The human
figure is a recurring element in her works. She finds her inspiration in nature,
architecture and images from the media. Rather than creating etching prints as
illustration, Laura Casas Valle creates images that evoke the atmosphere of the
depicted scenes, omitting unnecessary details while at the same time emphasising
the contrasts, playing with exuberant flat illustrations or giving a sense of depth.

In her new works she explores beyond the boundaries of traditional printed etching.
She adds literally another, spatial dimension to her works and allowing the viewers
to look closer around the objects and to peek into the artworks.

Herlambang Bayu Aji is a Berlin (Germany) based graphic artist, painter and
performance artist originated from Indonesia. His creations are often imaginary
creatures conjured from a combination of species with strong focus on the
traditional Javanese shadow puppetry or wayang, an ancient form of Indonesian
storytelling, ultimately raising questions about the relation between human and
nature. In his works on paper and objects he combines myths and multi-cultural
identities with playful children fantasies and fun.

At the “Paper Matters” exhibition Herlambang Bayu Aji presents an installation
titled “Animalgination”, accompanied with a music titled “Agung”, that he
composed, played and recorded by himself at the studio of the German composer
and musician Dorle Ferber. This installation is made possible as part of the
Stipendien Sondernprogramm von Berliner Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa.
