There are plenty of fascinating traditions linked to Christmas — but do you know the history behind many of them? Christmas Trees Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's consort, is usually credited with having introduced the Christmas tree into England in 1840. However it was actually 'good Queen Charlotte', the German wife of George III, who set up the first known tree at Queen's Lodge, Windsor, in December 1800. Turkey for dinner Despite their name turkeys do not originate from Turkey, but from the Americas, with Aztec people using them for eggs and meat over 2,000 years ago. For centuries, pickled boar's head was considered to be the most festive meat. Until a new import was brought to Britain from the New World in 1526 by William Strickland. Where he bought 6 peculiar looking birds called Turkeys from Native American traders and when he docked in Bristol, sold them to locals for 2 pence each. This exotic meat was soon seen as a status symbol with King Henry VIII eating it for Christmas soon after their introduction. Turkey is also featured in Charles Dicken's A Christmas Carol which was published in 1842 with Scrooge sending one to his clerk on Christmas Day. Dickens along with King Edward VII are seen to have popularised turkey for the middle classes, however roasted goose was still the most widespread choice for Christmas dinner. However turkey was still a luxury with it costing a week's wages to buy in the 1930s and remained so until the 1950s. Mistletoe The tradition of hanging mistletoe dates back to the ancient Druids who believed the plant brought good luck and helped protect against evil spirits. In Norse mythology, mistletoe symbolised love, with Frigg the goddess of love declaring it a symbol of love and vowed to plant a kiss on all those who passed beneath it, after the gods resurrected her son Baldur. The Romans associated mistletoe with peace, love and understanding and hung it over doorways to protect the household, as part of the festival, Saturnalia. The tradition of kissing under the mistletoe originated in England between 1720 & 1784. Each kiss required a berry to be plucked until none remained. Christmas Wreaths It is believed that Advent wreaths may have been first used by Lutherans in Germany in the 16th century. The first record of this custom, however, is from 1833, when a Lutheran clergyman lit a candle in a wreath every Sunday and told the nativity story. This custom spread to homes and churches and continues today. Traditionally, all of the Advent wreaths have four candles, and many of them have a white candle in the centre, the Christ candle, which is lit on Christmas Day. Advent and Christmas wreaths are constructed of evergreens to represent everlasting life brought through Jesus and the circular shape of the wreath represents God, with no beginning and no end. Christmas Stockings Leaving stockings out at Christmas goes back to the legend of St Nicholas, known as the gift giver, or Santa Claus as he is known today. A recently widowed man and father of three girls was having a tough time making ends meet. Even though his daughters were beautiful, he worried that their impoverished status would make it impossible for them to marry. St. Nicholas was wandering through the town where the man lived and heard villagers discussing that family’s plight. He wanted to help but knew the man would refuse any kind of charity directly. Instead, one night, he slid down the chimney of the family’s house and filled the girls’ recently laundered stockings, which happened to be drying by the fire, with gold coins. And then he disappeared. Christmas Cards People have been sending Christmas greetings to each other for hundreds of years. The first recorded use of 'Merry Christmas' was in a Christmas letter sent in 1534. The first known item that looked a bit like a Christmas card was given to King James I of England in 1611. However this was more like a large ornamental manuscript. The Christmas cards as we know them today started in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole who had helped to set up what we now know as the Post Office. Wanting a way of encouraging people to use its services Sir Cole had the idea of Christmas Cards with his friend artist John Horsley. They designed the first card and sold them for 1 shilling each. Advances in printing brought prices down, making cards hugely popular by the 1860s. By 1900, the custom of sending Christmas cards had spread throughout Europe. The first cards usually had pictures of the Nativity scene on them. In late Victorian times, robins (a British bird) and snow-scenes became popular. In those times the postmen were nicknamed 'Robin Postmen' because of the red uniforms they wore. Holly and Ivy Holly and ivy were traditionally taken inside over winter as a form of good luck, in the hope that the occupants of the house would survive winter, just as this hardy foliage does. It was also used during winter solstice celebrations to ward off evil spirits and celebrate new growth. Leaving cookies and milk for Santa According to one theory, the cookiesand-milk custom is derived from an older tradition, when families would stuff stockings with goodies for Santa and hang them by the chimney, his preferred mode of entrance, as a welcoming gift. Now, however, those stockings are usually chock-full of treats and smaller gifts for the family members themselves. One theory is leaving cookies and milk out, and maybe some carrots for his reindeer, took off as an American tradition which began during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Parents wanted to teach their children to share what they had, no matter how little and to show gratitude for the gifts that they were lucky enough to receive on Christmas Day. Say you’ve seen it in The Property Scene November 23rd 2023 The Property Scene: 01253 392 064 9 THE BRAND NEW BLACKPOOL NEIGHBOURHOOD THAT WILL BECOME ITS OWN LITTLE COUNTRY VILLAGE The plan for the neighbourhood was sparked by concerns the area was at risk of over-development. The Land at Marton Moss Blackpool Council’s executive has agreed to take the Marton Moss Neighbourhood Development plan to full council for approval after residents voted overwhelmingly in favour of it. Councillors also agreed to delegate powers enabling planning officers to oversee the document which sets out future development in Blackpool’s rural hinterland. A referendum held in October saw more than 90 per cent of voters say ‘yes’ to the plan being used by the council to help it decide on planning applications in the area. Elements include: • Design and the local environment – requiring new buildings to be well designed, be in character with the local area and improve biodiversity; safeguarding areas of major open land from being inappropriately developed and securing environmental improvements; and to specifically improve the roadside appearance and retain the open character of the land at School Road/ Midgeland Road junction. • Housing development – allocating a limited number of housing sites and guiding the number, sizes, and types of new homes on each site; allowing windfall housing on unallocated sites provided they meet the policy’s strict criteria • Horticultural and equestrian uses – supporting where possible horticultural businesses providing guidance regarding future alternative uses; and horse stabling and riding activities supporting equestrian development subject to certain criteria being met. • Heritage and community – a specific policy relating to Midgeland Farm to enable restoration and community use. Marton Moss plan Neighbourhood plan covers an area stretching between Division Lane and Yeadon Way which encompasses Blackpool’s rural hinterland and former market garden It was sparked by concerns the area was at risk of over-development. 20 The Property Scene: 01253 392 064 November 23rd 2023 Say you’ve seen it in The Property Scene HOW TO GET YOUR HOME READY FOR CHRISTMAS Things to do now to start getting your home ready for the festive season... and help ease the strain on your finances and time! PLAN AHEAD This covers everything from scheduling needed house maintenance to ordering the turkey. Make a to-do list. Remember to add in things like if you know that the boiler or another appliance needs maintenance, try to take care of it in advance rather than waiting until it’s out of order; you may end up paying extra, after-hours charges for service. Create a gift list/plan so that you can budget your time and money. Do the same with the food and create a shopping list and some meal plans too. DECLUTTER No matter how neat and tidy you naturally are, it’s all too easy for clutter to pile up. If you’re looking to bring harmony to the home before Christmas, start decluttering in stages — focus on one room, one space or even one zone within a room to make it easier (cupboards, storage nooks and box rooms are good places to start if you feel overwhelmed). Concentrate your attention on rooms that will be used the most at Christmas, such as guest bedrooms which tend to become a dumping ground. Clear out anything you no longer need or love and don’t keep things out of guilt. If you have decluttered ahead of time, you could make some extra cash from selling your unwanted items. You might even find nice things that you can re-gift saving you time doing your Christmas shopping. Or donate them to charity. PICK A FOCAL POINT Decorating every room in your house can be expensive so pick focal points in the main spaces in your home to add Christmas touches to. Other areas of your home can have an inexpensive festive touch by using a winter scented candle or playing music to set the holiday mood. TACKLE THE DIY JOBS Jobs such as booking a boiler service, having the gutters cleared, drains unblocked, changing fuses and lightbulbs will help your Christmas run smoothly. It will also save you the headache and expense of trying to find a plumber or electrician to come out last minute on Christmas Eve. PLAN YOUR FINANCES It can be challenging to pay for Christmas out of December's wage alone, so it makes sense to work out what you can afford and budget ahead of time. To ensure you have the least financial stress, make a list of the things you need to buy and set aside how much you want to spend on each person Other things you can do include tucking away a little bit each week, shopping around on various comparison websites, sticking to your budget, and being honest with loved ones about what you can realistically afford. DO A STOCK TAKE ON YOUR FOOD CUPBOARDS Do an inventory on your food cupboards so you can see what you already have, what needs to be thrown out and what is nearing it's expiry dates. This lets you organise what items you need to add to your shopping list, saving you money and kitchen space. Combined with creating meal plans it also helps with food waste and eases the stress at meal times. MAKE FREEZER MEALS Making several freezer meals can ease the stress of having to make dinner on busy holiday weeknights and will also keep the food budget in balance. Pop the frozen meal in the fridge in the morning to lower the cook time when you’re ready to put it in the oven that evening. Another plus is that freezer meals will cut down on clean up after dinner, making it easier for you to keep your home clean with less effort. Another plus is that freezer meals will cut down on clean up after dinner, making it easier for you to keep your home clean with less effort. SORT OUT YOUR HALLWAY Have you tackled the forgotten space under your stairs? Often a dumping ground for muddy shoes, coats and bags, it's an easy nook to neglect. Having a sort out can help make space for your guests coats and winter accessories. Donate old coats and shoes to charity or those no longer in a wearable condition to a textile recycling bank. Store summer coats elsewhere in your home until you need them again. OUTDOOR DECORATIONS Rather than paying for several expensive outdoor wreaths and outdoor lights, opt for a lighted wreath on your front door that will look festive during both the day and night. The permission also includes agreement for the developer to contribute £442,000 towards a football pitch at Stanley Park. A huge new housing development in Blackpool has been given the go-ahead by councillors despite fears it could lead to traffic congestion. Blackpool Council’s Planning Committee has approved an application by Rowland Homes which will see 200 houses built on the site of the former Bispham High School on Bispham Road. The scheme will is made up of 87 threebedroom homes, 73 four-bedroom homes and 40 twobedroom homes, with the latter designated as affordable housing. These will be spread through the site, with tenants paying affordable or social rents. There will be 56 homes built north of existing housing at Regency Gardens, 42 homes to the south of the existing housing fronting Lorne Road and Headfort Close and 102 homes on the eastern part of the site, accessed from Bispham Road apart from six fronting onto Kylemore Avenue. Alexis De Pol, representing Rowland Homes, said the applicant was seeking “to provide a high-quality scheme.” The committee heard concerns over increased traffic would be addressed by monitoring speed levels and considering an upgrade of the junction of Bispham Road and Warbreck Hill Road. Susan Parker, head of development management at the council, told the meeting: “Access through Regency Gardens is considered to be acceptable.” “While local residents object on this front, it must be noted the estate was designed to support another 100 houses that have never been built. As such the road is considered easily capable of supporting another 56 dwellings.” “Nevertheless a condition is proposed to require speed surveys to see if mitigation measures are needed.” These could include speed humps. She added it was accepted roads in the area were already very busy, with particular concerns around the junction of Bispham Road and Warbreck Hill Road. But opportunities to improve that junction will be considered, and a new priority junction will be created onto Bispham Road. The permission also includes agreement for the developer to contribute £442,000 towards a football pitch at Stanley Park, and £80,000 towards the upgrade of the adjoining playground as part of its planning obligations. Outline permission had already been in place for 176 properties on the land, with Rowland Homes submitting its full application for 200 homes on the site in September 2022. While local residents object on this front, it must be noted the estate was designed to support another 100 houses that have never been built.
