STORY OF

WHAT IS TOFU?

Tofu, also known as bean curd, is a food prepared by coagulating soy milk and then pressing
the resulting curds into solid white blocks of varying softness; it can be silken, soft, firm,
or extra firm. Due to its flavor and nutritional value, tofu is one of the staple ingredients of
Asian cuisines. And tofu has more recently become popular in Western countries especially
to vegetarians. Tofu is an affordable way to include plant-based protein in your diet. Tofu is

THE ORIGINS OF TOFU

Tofu has been around for a long, long time, believe it or not. Like many soya foods, tofu originated
in China. The first people to write about tofu were writers from the Song Dynasty in China, about
900 AD. Those Song Dynasty writers thought tofu had been invented by a Taoist prince of the Han
Dynasty, Liu An, in about 100 AD. Eventually, Buddhist monks brought soybeans and recipes for
bean curd to Japan in the eighth century, and tofu was originally called Okabe. It was not until the
1960’s that its modern name came about.

Helps You Sleep Better

If you want to get better sleep, increase your magnesium intake.
Eating more tofu can help you sleep better that because one serving
has 14% of the recommended daily intake (RDI) for magnesium.
Magnesium helps with sleep by maintaining adequate levels of
GABA, a neurotransmitter that’s involved in deep, restful sleep. On
the contrary, low levels of GABA contribute to insomnia and poor
sleep.
So, it’s important to maintain adequate levels of GABA throughout
the day so that by nighttime, sleep comes easy. Eating tofu, along
with other high magnesium plant foods like dark leafy greens, nuts,
and legumes can help you support adequate levels.
Likewise, high magnesium consumption, specifically through diet,
also plays a role in preventing disease. This 2014 analysis of over
almost 25,000 people showed that high levels of magnesium are
inversely associated with metabolic syndrome.
Considering metabolic syndrome is a global epidemic and a
precursor to diabetes, it’s imperative to eat more magnesium in your
diet.
