“The Gynecologic Oncology Division at TBCC is extremely proud of the results achieved with
our Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) project. Through collaboration with our colleagues
at CCI, we implemented ERAS in our surgical patients starting in November 2017. In 367 ERAS
patients, mean compliance with ERAS care elements increased from 56% to 77%. Median length of
stay (LOS) for all surgeries decreased from 4 days to 3 days post-ERAS. In medium/high complexity
surgery, median LOS was reduced by 2 days. Complications prior to discharge decreased from 53%
to 36% post-ERAS. There was no significant difference in readmissions, complications up to 30
days, or mortality between the cohorts. The overall net cost savings to the healthcare system
was $462,000. We look forward to sustaining these gains in our population.” - Dr. Gregg Nelson

TransLab is an important component of patient care, and an area that is lacking in many
centers and provinces. Translational research is important for improving patient care
and treatment. Assay development is costly, but a critical, necessary quality
step in order to achieve future economic benefits and health impacts for Albertans.
ANNUAL REPORT 2017 32
A Translational Research entity is critical in helping clinical labs to keep up with rapidly
evolving technology and advances in discovery. Many novel tests are outsourced to
companies that charge large overhead (i.e. OncotypeDx >$4000/patient), instead of
developing and implementing in-house solutions (i.e. ProSigna/PAM50) that would
provide lower per patient costs and shorter turnaround times. In 2016, a customer
feedback survey was delivered with generally positive responses. There were some
concerns highlighted around cost restrictiveness and turnaround times. TransLab
has looked to improve in these areas wherever possible. Some notable suggestions for
improvement included: bringing molecular tests into the clinic, more interaction with
clinical tumour groups to stimulate collaborations, and availability of new platforms
such as the Life technology S5 sequencer (enabling cell free DNA and platform
molecular analysis) and the Vectra multi-fluorescent protein infrastructure (enabling
up to 7 colour protein staining that will allow immunological tumour microenvironment
analysis to be undertaken). Many of these Priorities/Strategies will harmonize well with
the Department of Oncology Precision Oncology Experimental Therapeutics (POET)
