Math 1314- College Algebra

Before I dismiss the class, I ask my students to read the next section in the book for the next class. They
should get used to any terminology, definitions, properties, and theorems, and they should highlight any
part they may have questions from reading the section.

Chap 5 Section 5.1: Systems of linear equations

Definition:

• A system of linear equations is a collection of two or more linear equations involving the same
set of variables, say !, !, … , !

• A solution of a linear system is a list ( !, !, … , !) of numbers that makes each equation in the
system true when the values !, !, … , ! are substituted for !, !, … , !, respectively.

The method of substitution
In order to solve a system of two equations involving two variables you need to follow these steps:

1) Solve one of the equations for one variable in terms of the other.
2) Substitute the expression obtained in Step 1 in the other equation to obtain an equation in one

variable.
3) Solve the equation obtained in Step 2.
4) Back-substitute the solution from Step 3 in the expression obtained in Step 1 to find the value of

the other variable.
5) Check the solution to see that it satisfies both of the original equations.

The method of elimination
The steps for solving a system of linear equations by the method of elimination are the following:
1) Obtain coefficients for ( ) that are opposites by multiplying all terms of one or both

equations by suitable constants.
2) Add the equations to eliminate one variable, and solve the resulting equation.
3) Back-substitute the value obtained in Step 2 in either the original equations and solve for the

other variable.
4) Check your solution in both of the original equations.

Read from page 498 to page 507 in the book.

Graphing method

To solve a system of linear equations graphically we graph both equations in the same coordinate
system. The solution to the system will be in the point where the two lines intersect.

Discussion After reading

1. Write one example of systems of linear equations
2. How many methods can we use to solve a system of linear equations in this section?

Personal Reflection

• I learned some new strategies and its working great
• Student are giving positive feedback
• Its an amazing course and I learned from everyone

participating in the program

Reflective Essay

As a Mathematics instructor, I learned a lot of valuable information in this
course that I can apply in my classes. The discussions we were having in class with
my fellow teacher was already something big for me, sharing our own strategies to
handle and conduct our classes was awesome and I learned a lot from them. The
BOPPPS lesson plan was so special for me. As a teacher, I am always tend to learn
new strategies that can facilitate the learning process for both my students and I. So
far, I have learned many ways to develop a lesson plan for my courses but so none of
them is more organize like BOPPPS. Each step in the BOPPPS lesson plan is
important in the teaching and learning process. It has saved me time and now I am
able to pre-assess and post-assess my students, I have learned how to incorporate
games and technology into my classroom without disrupting the learning process. I
had the opportunity to explore different technologies that I can implement in my
classes.
I used to ask my student to read prior to come in class but I had never tested
who read or who didn’t read. Since I started using BOPPPS lesson plan I pre-assess
my student before a new section to find out what they need more instruction on and
what they already know. It has saved me time within the classroom while teaching
new material. I used technology (Kahoot) to pre-assess them, and now they are all
excited to come and participate in class. I started implementing the learning
objective in my lesson preparation and I do a post-assessment to check if the
objectives were met. The new technologies that I learned during the ACP, had

helped me for my pre-assessment and post-assessment without wasting too much in
doing it.

I am really satisfied with how much I have grown as a teacher in a short
amount of time. I have started seeing a positive result since I began to implement
some of the BOPPPS lesson plan in my classroom. Student participation has
increase, the average grade has tremendously increased and I see a lot of smile faces
in my class now. It was really hard for me to find the connection between teaching
and technology, especially for mathematics. After taking ACP, now I am able to use
technology in some of my course. My students are excited in class, they are more
engaged, and that is my everyday goal.

As a teacher, I know my effort and enthusiasm directly influence my student
commitment to my course and interest in my field. That is one of the reasons why I
wanted to participate in the ACP, to get new teaching strategies that could make a
difference in the learning process. I am really thankful for this program and I think
ACP should be mandatory for every teacher. If I could make any change to the
program itself, I would change the meeting day to Saturday, because most of the
adjunct teach in the evening time and also have some workshops about technology
in the classroom.

Overall, I really enjoyed the Adjunct Certification Program, thank you for
sharing so many resources with us. I will spend my Christmas break exploring as
many as I can. Thank you a lot.
