Hope

There was a time when the mask's

weren't needed.

There was a time when people used to

go outside. There

was a time when the children played

with their friend's. But

today the whole world is affected by

the six lettered ball-like structure.

School's are empty!Cities are

empty!Park's are empty!

I hope there will be a day when

mask's aren't needed.

I hope there will be a day when the

whole world come out of this

pandemic

I hope we will fight this pandemic.

Story

My Family and Corona

*A boy's journal about how his family is during a global pandemic

Everything is happening upside down in my family, my grandma says drink cherry juice with turmeric and
covid will not touch you, my grandpa just go out for morning walks, afternoon walks and evening walks
saying that its good for health, yeah obviously walking is good for health but not when there is dangerous
virus outside which mainly targets on ending elder people's lives and the most dumbest thing is that my
uncle who lecture us all about how important it is to be safe in these situations wears the same mask for 4
days straight.Everyone is just complaining these days my mother is upset because she cant buy specific
items for her cookery experiment and my dump elder brother is complaining about how he is not able to
meet his friends like OH hellooo people are literally dying and you are upset because you can't meet your
set of 'dump friends' and as expected I got a kick from him for saying that. Even though it's fun to hear how
my family is being stupid, it really did worry me. So one a night I gathered my family in the living room and
decided to educate them on what this virus really is . So I researched on it properly and I made charts
presentations and started presenting it to my family, first I talked about how 3 ply masks and alcohol based
sanitizers are the two most important thing to fight against covid. which resulted in a huge argument about
how alcohol is haram and then I had to step in and tell them that we can also wash our hands for 20 second
instead of using one so that was settled but it ended in another fight on how we are supposed to use the
bottle of sanitizer that we already have, I tried to explain that we can keep them aside for our upcoming
emergencies or small uses but they declared that it have alcohol in it when the label clearly says it doesn't
anyway they ended on deciding to throw them out and my brother was given that responsibility. After 24
minutes of argument we talked about how corona can affect elderly people than others ,and the chances of
death are high then my father started to scold me on how I present normal things so negatively even
though I tried to tell him that there is no need to worry until grandpa stops taking random walks
throughout the day in the streets and my grandma test stupid medicines on herself, as we can guess, it
turned into an another fight.
My mother started to scold my father for letting grandfather out and my father was defending himself
saying that mental health is important too and stuff like that and at that moment I truly wanted to quit but
its my family so I got to live with it then I shouted at them to take this seriously but instead they grounded
me for interrupting elders and now I have to clean the entire house for one week which was not fair

because I'm always in my boarding school and this
pandemic is the only reason I'm with them (which I'm
grateful for)After 46 long minutes of arguing about
alcohol ,walks, sanitizers and medicines they finally
settled to make rules which was nice a relief. We made
rules like grandpa can walk around the house as much as
he wants but he will not step out of the gate, for grandma
WhatsApp was banned which she clearly wasn't ha
ppy
about and we divided the duty to clean the milk bottles
and masks regularly and finally it was midnight we
served ourselves food, offered our salah together and
everyone was happy and my brother was the happiest
cause it was normally his duty to clean the home when I
was in the boarding, but I think he was more happier
about me doing the work instead of him not doing it. My
Brother went out to throw the sanitizer and I told him
that there is no need but who hears he just called me a
'stupid head' and within minutes he came back with
empty bottles. Then I remembered that I totally forgot to
feed my dog which became responsibility (punishment)
for not sharing my tissue papers with my unhygienic and
brother last week.

I rushed outside with the food because the usual time that I give him food was 9:30 but now its 10 and

suddenly I don't know what happened my chappal wear just magically slipped and there was flying food

around me and I made a huge noise on my landing which my brother heard and he came to check on me

and instead of helping, he decided to take a photo of me with marinade on my head, then came my mother

and father they helped me to get up but I couldn't walk cause something happened to my ankle so my

father carried me to my bedroom where my grandma checked my foot and told there was nothing to

worry but it was hurting so damn bad and considering her medical skills I chose to believe otherwise then

my grandfather came with some sort of oil and grandma rubbed and massaged it to my ankle and even

though it hurt in the beginning the pain started to fade. Then my uncle came and told why I slipped in the

steps, which is because my wonderful, genius and brilliant brother thought it was a good idea to leave the

sanitizer on the steps itself so it would get evaporated by morning. I was so angry that I wanted to hit him

in the stomach but considering my current situations and comparing our bodies I let my anger sink. I just

wanted to help my family and now I'm the one laying in the bed unable to walk. My mother bought a hot

water bag to put it on my leg which felt nice, she put a pillow under my leg and she scolded my brother and

grounded him to clean the house for an entire month and no mobile phones for 5 days , then i felt like my

pain magically lifted from my ankle and I wanted to smile but if I smile everyone will probably think that

I'm faking the pain so I kept a serious face, everyone was serious until my brother showed them that

picture of me and grandma busted out laughing followed by others, I have to say I was little offended by

that until I saw the picture myself, that night I thanked God for giving me a loving family even though they

are a bit dump but that's why he created me right? -Maryam Hana

Why do we hope ?

Hope sustains life. It helps man to overcome setbacks
and disappointments in life with courage. Even at the worst
of times man to hope. It is this flame of hope, which keeps
burning in human heart, in spite of misfortunes, that makes
man heroic. There are innumerable individuals in history who
have continued their struggle for their goals in the hope of

finally achieving them.
If they had no hope they would have given up their
enterprise at the upset. It is not only warriors and heroes
who draw strength from hope of a better tomorrow. It is a
universal experience. A critically sick person has many a
time battled the medical world with his miraculous
recovery, simply because he had not stopped hoping in spite
of being declared a hopeless case. A positive attitude thus,

helps man to tide over difficulties in life.
Undoubtedly, hope spurs man to better effort. It prevents
him from succumbing to the trials and tribulations of life.

Life would become intolerable without hope.
We should strive to become a better person by every passing

day; hope to be the best of us, before we leave this world.

Book Review

BURIED THOUGHTS

Autobiographies and biographies influence
readers more than research papers and
study articles because it is the green life of
the writer. Through the book, she shows her
life once again in front of each reader.
Joseph Annamkutty Jose is an author who
lives among us through two such books at a
very young age. Mainstream readers are
reached by 6980,000 “Buried Thoughts”
who look at life from a different angle from
within us in the midst of a very busy new
generation of living conditions. The author’s
second book is ‘God’s Spies’. After four years
of hard work, DC Books has published a 311-
page book of twenty-five chapters in four
sections: Love, Memories, Errors, and Hope.
The first six chapters describe many of the
people he loved and all his belongings,
known as Joppan. Maria Chechi, who was
with him more than his mother when he
was a child. Etten, who was with him when
he said he was going back when life was
suffocating between every rule in the
seminary. Carla, the first sweetheart in her
life, who made herself a better man and
entered her life like an angel, In the
meanwhile, Joppan did not forget to
surprise his mother, make his own food,
wipe the bowl with his foot cloth and tell the
story of Appachan and make the readers
laugh. The same father-in-law fed Joppa for
a week while he was in Bangalore with his
mother-in-law. Appachan created a variety
experience by offering love along with good
tasting food. These are the ones who led
Joppa by the hand through the culmination
of love. Chapters 7 to 12 are full of memories
that are very interesting as well as happy
and sad.

Dowry -A Bane on a Generation

Dowry system is one of the oldest institutions in India. It was
prevalent in the sprawling Vijayanagar Empire in South India in
medieval times.

Although the dowry system took its birth in the hoary past, yet it
has conspicuously become a nuisance in the modern age. It is
mainly because the worldhas gone the whole hog towards
materialism and the ever-increasing greedandavaricein the
minds of the people has been the net result.

It is not unoften that we read and hear about dowry tortures and
deaths. The girls areharassed by their Mammon-worshipping in-
laws. They are asked to bring more and more dowry. In some
cases even the constant flow of money and material objects from
the bride's side cannot quench thirst of the moneyloving
bridegroom's kith and kin.

In earlier times, the items given to the bridegroom and his kith
and kin as dowry were such as land, cattle, livestock, cash,
jewellary, etc. Still later, entered the realm of dowry such items
as cars, scooters very costly furniture refrigerators, TVs,
smartphones, etc.

In all cases, cash money, jewellery and clothes were important
components of dowry. As far as cash is concerned, previously, it
was limited to a few hundred rupees, then a few thousand rupees
and now it is in lakhs of rupees and in more affluent societies, even
in crores of rupees. Rarely, wehearofevenbig buildings, bungalows,
gardens, farms, meadows and such things also transferred as items
of dowry.

Isn't all this ridiculous and a total negation of all the cultural
values we so proudly undertake and claim to have? More so,
when the poor girl and her parentsare forcedto gorge out so
much when they have already spent a lot on the girl's upbringing
and education and on her marriage in the form of a sumptuous
feast under an expensive stall or in a luxurious hotel or marriage
palace and in distribution of sweets and various gifts to so many
relatives on both sides?

Is it not the height of cruelty to force the poor girl and her
parents to spend all this even when they are not in so
comfortable a financial position and have

to undertake heavy debts, and girl's educational, and other
merits, are considered secondary only?

Sometimes, all this mad race for money on the parts of the
bridegroom's parents and others leads to the suicide of the
poor girl. Sometimes, a poor lonely creature is put to flames
alive by her heartless, ruthless in-laws.

Of course, there are a number of Anti-Dowry laws but they
are hardly ever implemented. The social organisations
should force the government to bring to book all
recalcitrants. Media should take up the task of bringing
about an awakening among the youth of country. In schools
and colleges, all boys should take an oath that they would
not demand any dowry at the time of their marriage.
Likewise, all girls should take an oath that they should not
marry a dowry-seeking boy, come what may.

We should also bear in mind the obverse side of this coin.
Taking advantage of the Anti-dowry laws, sometimes some
clever girls try to harass their inlaws for no fault of theirs and
in such cases often the girls' parents are also behind them,
instigating them into doing such an unholy act.

If you think about it, aren't educated young men and women
like us the necessary 'push' that's needed to end this?

What do you think about dowry? After reading this essay,

how sure are you that you won't take dowry during your

marriage in like 10-15 years? -AMITH S

Self Love

If everyone loved themselves and
treat oneself the same way they
want others to treat them.The
world would be such a better
place knowing ones worth and
having priorities doesn’t make
you egoistic. It makes you
powerful. One thought which I
have quoted to my heart since
the beginning of 2021 after
spending time knowing myself is
that enjoying your youth and
destroying your future is 2
different things. If put together
no goodness will come your way
except the fact that you are
destroying yourself. My major
fear is not using my potential
enough, when my future self will
ask me why and regret the
present me and my behavior and
the baby me not being proud .If
you are not proud of “yourself
“nobody else will ever be as
well.”keep a track of your
priorities”.

International Youth Day (IYD) is an awareness day
designated by the United Nations. The purpose of the
day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and
legal issues surrounding youth. The first IYD was
observed on 12 August, 2000. On 17 December 1999, in
its Resolution 54/120, the United Nations General
Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the
World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth
(Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared
International Youth Day. International Youth Day is
observed annually on August 12th. The Day gives an
opportunity to celebrate and mainstream young
peoples’ voices, actions and initiatives, as well as
their meaningful, universal and equitable
engagement.

It is meant as an opportunity for governments and
others to draw attention to youth issues worldwide.
During IYD, concerts, workshops, cultural events, and
meetings involving national and local government
officials and youth organizations take place around
the world. It focuses on the difficulties that some
young people are experiencing throughout the world.

Youth Day was created by the UN to help draw
awareness to these issues as we strive to find
solutions. It’s a day for reflection but also a day for
taking action so get involved.

Book Review

THE ALCHEMIST
- Synopsis

The Alchemist is a novel written by

Paulo Coelho in 1993. Originally it was
written in Portuguese (O Alquimista), in
1998. This book is highly spiritual and
fictitious. The story is about Santiago, a
shepherd boy, chasing his dream with
the help of people around to reach his
destiny. Santiago once had a recurring
dream about a treasure near the
pyramids in Egypt. He likes adventure
so he became curious to know the truth
behind the dream. After hearing from a
gypsy woman, he began his journey, she
told him that there is indeed a treasure,
and he needs to find it.
"When you want something in life, the whole universe will conspires in helping you achieve it.”- the
author describes it by showing that, from the gypsy woman to the alchemist, all conspired to help him
achieve his dream. This is an important quote in the book, besides the book gained more attention
through this quote.

Throughout the book, Coelho interpreted that giving up too quickly is not an option. As for Santiago, he
had to leave everything behind, even his love life, for fulfilling his dream. Coelho believes that
everything in life has linked to the soul of the world, a term in alchemy. Its principle is that it governs
all things. Like when we want something with all of our heart, we are closest to the soul of the world. In
the end Santiago, who travelled from Spain to Egypt, ends up realising a great truth behind his dream.

Education During The

Pandemic Covid-19 At today’s time as we all know that corona virus [covid-
19] a pandemic, not only af ected the earning source and
economic life of people but also the education system too.
Children are not able to go to their respective schools or
education institutions. But we all know that we are not
interested in any kinds of problems in the education
sector or want to lose the education of our children, so
the government took initiative steps, by which children
are now able to attend their classes safely from home by
electronic learning [online classes]. Children uses devices
like mobile phones, lap top, computers etc..... to attend
their classes while teachers teach students from their
homes which is a great challenge to them too. Online
studies has been promoted in our country INDIA and
many other countries too. But due to the continues and
excessive use of this electronic gadgets, the eye size and
even the brain of students and learning people are
getting af ected very badly,so it is very risky too. We know
that we all are passing through a very dif icult situation,
but be sure to ourselves that we will overcome all these
challenges in ourlife and behappy.

The Story of a Former Horror

Movie Lover
I woke up with my throat feeling very sore. I had
another nightmare. I've been having them for a
week now. I should've listened to my friend Dan

when he said I shouldn't see that horror movie.

However, as always I didn't listen to him. I've
always been a thrill-seeker and watching a good old
horror movie on a Friday night with the lights on
low and a bowl filled with popcorn in my hand was
always one of my favourite thing to do, but the last
movie I watched has me doubting whether or not I
should watch another movie today. I decide against
not watching it. I'll call Dan to ask him to watch it

with me. The last movie I watched left me with a cliff-hanger and now I need to know what happens next. I

call Dan over and practically beg him to watch the movie with me. He reluctantly agrees which has me
breathing out a sigh of relief. I head over to the kitchen to make the popcorn.
After a few minutes, I hear the doorbell ring. However, when I open the door, I'm met with no one. Hm,
weird. I must've imagined it. I head on back to the kitchen and put the popcorn into bowls for the two of
us. After I see everything up, I hear the doorbell ring again. When I open the door, I'm once again met
with no one. By now I'm utterly confused, Is some kid pranking me? Or are these horror movies finally
starting to take a toll on me? "Boo!" Suddenly Dan jumps up from behind a bush and nearly gives me a
heart attack. After giving him a piece of my mind, I let him in and tell him to situate himself on the couch
while I go to the kitchen to bring us some drinks. I enter the living room to see Dan had already started the
movie and got two blankets for us. I sit on the couch next to him and face the TV which is now playing the
movie. Halfway into the movie, I hear a sound that causes me to whip my head to Dan to check if he heard
it too. On seeing the fearful expression on his face, I confirm my doubt. We both walk in the direction
where we heard the noise, which sounded like a glass shattering from the kitchen. We enter the kitchen to
find pieces of broken glasses over the floor. I have no idea how it ended up there considering the fact that
neither Dan nor I had left a glass on the counter and the glass on the floor is nowhere near the shelf I use
to put my glasses on. We both look at each other with pretty spooked out expressions on our face. That is
until Dan's eyes fall on something that is on the floor behind me, which causes me to turn around so fast
that I'm sure I have whiplash. I'm shocked to see drops of blood on the floor. By now both Dan and I are
shaken to the core, so we decide to clean the mess up tomorrow and go back to the living room.

Neither of us wanted to stop watching the movie as we both wanted to see how it ends well
more like I wanted to see how the movie ends. So him being the greatest best friend he is,
he agreed to watch the movie till the end with me. After an extremely exhilarating and
horrifying half an hour later the movie finally ended and the credits started rolling in.
"Wow," Dan says “That was..." "Awesome," I finish. "Yeah, only you would say that Cole,
only you." Only then did I realise that his face had gone completely pale. By now it's eleven-
thirty at night, so I ask Dan if he wants to sleep in the guest bedroom. He refused and asked
me if he could sleep in my room as he was a little shaken up from the events that took place
a few hours prior. So before I agreed, I had done what any BFF would do in such a situation
and made fun of him then happily agreed. After making sure Dan was comfortable in the air
mattress I use for such situations, I excused myself to go to the bathroom. When I walked
in, what I saw was, well let's just say the sight I saw wasn't pretty. There in the mirror was
the word "Do you miss me?", In big words and it looked as if it was written in blood. When I
looked down, I saw something that made my blood run cold, it was a piece of broken glass
similar to the one I had just seen on the kitchen floor. I scamper back to the room
frantically to tell what I had just seen to Dan. Once I did, he just sat there, shock written all
over his face and he looked like he would pass out any second

After a lot of trying to calm each other down, we agree to try to go to sleep as it is incredibly
late by now. We get to sleep for about 5 hours
before we both wake up startled by a sound, a
sound like someone dragging something sharp across a table. We both tumble out of bed as
fast as we can and walk downstairs, no more like leaping downstairs taking 4 steps at a
time. When we reach the kitchen, we both let out a horrifying scream, there standing on top
of the kitchen counter was Tim, who once was our other best friend. His hands were covered
with blood as he holds a piece of glass. He turned his head to the both of us and let out a
sickening chuckle. "Well, if it isn't my two best friends?" He pouts with fake grief. His voice
sounded like he hadn't talked in ages, it had a stomach-churning rasp to it. Before he could
say anything else though Dan and I bolted out of the house. We ended up in our next-door
neighbour's house. To say they were confused would be an understatement. They were
beyond troubled. It's been 6 months since the incident, and Dan and I are still shaken up.
I've stopped watching horror movies and nowadays Dan and I don't really talk about Tim
anymore like we used too, we were like the golden trio, seeing the person you thought was
your friend in such a state will do things to you. You might be wondering why we acted in
such a way when we saw Tim, well you see Tim died in an accident over 2 years ago...

Music

REMEMBER THE RAIN

IIt was raining outside…. I was watching
through the window. I can feel the smell of
soil while the raindrops hit the land, the
trees and flowers Feeling incredibly happy
and they were smiling… cats and dogs
where running for a shelter. But they are
smiling I saw the hen was covering her
kids. The nature is incredibly happy. The
wind brings raindrops to my face. I feel
very chilled. It was over all happy and
everyone was smiling… I can feel the rain…
Ava…. Ava… wake up fast... the water
supplies is here… I woke up from the
sleep… I fastly went near the window. I
have not seen the rain, but I saw a drought
land with trees having no leaves, they were
crying. I have not seen any animals or
birds; I cannot feel
the smell of soil. I just only saw a lorry with
a water tank and people running towards
it.

Technology

The concept “Necessity is the mother of invention” was discussed in the
book “the Republic” for the first time by Plato. Humans are an ingenious
species. Whenever there are any crises, we will come up with creative
and innovative solutions. From the invention of the wheel to the
development of Mars rovers are the advancements that stand out as
revolutionary inventions. All technological inventions are made for
human developments. Technology is not inherently advantages or
disadvantages; the outcome depends on how it is used. The great
challenge of the new era is the advancement of technology. It helps the
rich but not the poor .Over dependence on technology has a negative
socioeconomic impact on society. New technology improved productivity
and cost saving at the same time many lost their jobs. Broadband
internet helps to access relevant information at any time and anywhere
meanwhile, it is also helps for easy communication but the privacy of
the data is questioned During the pandemics and other crises the
technology has been used effectively in health care. Social isolation,
decrease in creativity etc the list goes on technologies have slowly
stolen an essential time in people’s day-to-day lives and being without
technology would be unimaginable for some of us. Life has to move on
with technology with at most care. As we keep the fire at a safe distance
to harnessing the power of fire, we should keep the advancement of
technology at a safe distance to harness the power of technology for our
bright future.
