Concept
Information
The concept of this study is “Water filtering”.
Dirty/concentrated water in unclean and unsanitized areas can cause us
to get diseases and feel sick if used or consumed. There are several
ways to filter out water but the one chosen in this study is as follows
By using a water purifier made out of charcoal and sand we can filter out
the smell, dirt, chemicals or any harmful particles that are inside
therefore, making it clean and safe to use. Because the impurities in the
water are no longer there, your health also improves
The beneficial of water filtering,Our body can be damaged by dirty water
or water that doesn't filter. It contain lots of bacteria inside ,So it can
cause many disease such as Diarrhea , Malaria, Guinea Worm Disease
and Cholera
The type of water filtering,In this types of filtering is about how it filter
the water. It have 5 different types of water filtering
- Mechanical Filters
- Absorption Filters
- Sequestration Filters
- Ion Exchange Filters
- Reverse Osmosis Filters
The warning,In this topic is mean you should read careful the information
how to use or how to perform the system otherwise it can cause very
harmful effect such as some chemical in filter has leak and it can effect
to our body
Knowledge
What is water filtering?
Water filtering system used to filter out undesired chemical compounds,
organic and inorganic materials, and biological contaminants from water.
The purpose of water filtration is to provide clean drinking water.
When was water filtering created and what did it
look like?
Water filtration systems have been around for a long time. As far back as
500 BC it’s believed that the famous Greek scientist, Hippocrates
invented the first early water filter in the form of a cloth bag! This simple
device was known as the ‘Hippocratic sleeve’.
The cloth acted like a sieve to filter out the impurities from the Greek
aqueducts. The water was boiled and poured through the cloth, which
trapped the sediments that were causing the bad taste and smell. So
creating cleaner, better tasting drinking water.
Water filters have evolved a long way since then bringing us all the way
to the present day – inline water filters with alarms that you don’t even
need a plumber to install.
What is dirty water?
Dirty water means a low dry matter waste made up of water
contaminated by manure, urine, effluent, milk and cleaning materials
with a Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) no greater than 2000
mg/liter.
Why does dirty water cause infection?
In dirty water there are microscopic organisms, like viruses and bacteria,
that are ingested through contaminated water or by coming in contact
with feces.
What diseases are caused by using dirty water?
1.Typhoid Fever-it’s estimated that up to 20 million people worldwide
suffer from the illness each year. It’s spread through contaminated food,
unsafe water, and poor sanitation, and it is highly contagious.
2.Cholera-The disease is spread through contaminated water and
causes severe dehydration and diarrhea.
3.Giardia-The infection is caused by a parasite and typically clears up
after a few weeks. However, it’s possible that those who have been
exposed will experience intestinal problems for years to come.
4.Dysentery-the disease is spread mainly through poor hygiene. It can
be caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites in unsafe food and water
and by people coming in contact with fecal matter.
5.Salmonella-Most cases of salmonella come from ingesting food or
water contaminated with feces. Undercooked meat, egg products, fruits,
and vegetables can also carry the disease.
What is hygienic water?
Hygienic water is the water that through the process of cleaning and
purifying water so it is safe for use. An example of water sanitation is a
filter that removes impurities from water.
Why are we using charcoal and sand to filter water?
For charcoal,we use charcoal because it removes toxins from the water
without stripping the water of salts and important minerals. For sand,we
use sand because The sand removes pathogens and suspended solids
from contaminated drinking water.
Advantage and Disadvantage
Advantage
- Easy to use
- Save to drink
- Low cost
- You can make it at home
Disadvantage
- It is hard to make. It uses lots of material and tools to make.
- Difficult to use. Takes a bit of time to filter the water.
- Hard to develop. Uses high costs if you use many materials to
make it perfect.
Useful and harmful
Useful
- Saves money, because you made it and it low cost
- Comfortable
Harmful
- Some filters are harmful to you , so read carefully when making
them.
- The electricity is harmful,Careful of it.
- The cleanliness of this machine,You should clean it some time to
avoid the growth of bacteria.
Guidance
◦ Place the water purifier somewhere that's safe from children and
won't collapse.
◦ It Should be clean twice a month.
◦ Should be check often to see if there are any leaks or worn out
material that need to be repair or not.
◦ Should be place where the heat can't transfer to it.
Chapter 3 : Methodology
1.General procedure
a)Material Required
1)filter core
It is the part of the filtercore that filters the water
1.1)polypropylene cotton, used to filter the dust in the water by
catching the things that are bigger than the hole of cotton
1.2)Gravel,It was discovered that gravel can be an effective filtration medium and
keep back precipitates that contain contaminants and other sediments.
The size, angularity, and hardness of gravel are the essential features to prevent soil
erosion and ensure proper filtration.
1.3) Sand/Pebbles, It removes suspended matter, as well as floating
and sinkable particles. The small spaces between them trap tiny dirt
particles in the filter.
1.4)Activated carbon, are generally employed in the process of
removing organic compounds and/or extracting free chlorine from water,
thereby making the water suitable for discharge or use in manufacturing
processes
1.5) Cotton, it keeps the other layers of your filter from falling out into
your water.
1.6)Resin,An anion resin removes chlorine and sulfur. The ion
exchange media is an integral part of a water refining system since it
works as the sole water softening agent
1.7)Ceramic balls,Reduces contaminants including carcinogens such
as chloroform and heavy metals in water supplies.
2) Structure
material use to build our structure
2.1)Pipes,use to transport the water
2.2)Glass jars,Contain the water
2.3)Water cock,To pour the water
b) Procedure/Method
First we talk together to design and plan ,then we predict the possibility
for the water from this water filter. The methods are below as follows.
1) First we drill holes on the 2000ml and 500ml plastic bottle.
2) Then we measure the pipe and cut it to fit in the holes.
3) We fill the filter part with the material we have.
4) We connect the pipe with the filter together and also the valve.
5) Then we test this water filter and if it doesn’t work then we’ll fix it.
c)Result
The water is now clean from the process of filtering by the different types
of layers. The water has passed through the layer of cotton which help
random material from other layer that will fall into the water then it will
pass through the layer of sand that help prevent the charcoal from
getting into the cleaned water then the water will pass through the kdf 55
which is zinc so it will help remove the mercury from the water. And for
the charcoal it helps remove the chlorine which is the most important
part of the process.
d) Final product picture
