The Lowdown on Eaton Rapids –

Voted Michigan’s Best Small Town

Eaton Rapids is a City
that is easy to fall in love
with. ”The Only Eaton
Rapids on Earth” is
located on the Grand
River, and its business
district is actually located
on an island in the
middle of the river--with
bridges to the north,
south, east and west.
Thus, often referred to as
the “Island City,” it is known for its picturesque river views. Behind the
business district, on the east side, is another island called Island Park.
The park is owned by the City and has foot bridges on the east and
west. The City could have easily been called the “City of Bridges,” as,
at one time, it had 14 bridges to maintain. Today, the City claims six
vehicle bridges and three foot bridges.

The origins of the City of Eaton Rapids go back to 1837, when it was
founded. It was organized as a village in 1859 and incorporated as a
village in 1871.

In 1881, the Village of Eaton Rapids was ready for a big change. The
January 1, 1881, Eaton Rapids Journal stated that “Eaton Rapids is
Tired of the Appelation ‘Village’ and Signs for a City Charter.” So, it
came to pass that, in 1881, with a proposal to the State Legislature,
Eaton Rapids became incorporated and chartered as a City.

In the 1880’s, Eaton Rapids was a thriving community. The water power
furnished by the Grand River ran grist, woolen, and lumber mills.

The subterranean water tables were of superb mineral quality and
gave rise to numerous artisan wells. Because of these wells, Eaton
Rapids became known as the “Saratoga of the West.” There were
16 daily trains that brought health seekers to Eaton Rapids for the
magnetic mineral water and bath houses.

As life starts moving faster and faster, we need to make a choice....
to move faster with it or to step off every now and then. To marvel at
the wonders around us, to take in new sights and sounds and
remember just how beautiful life can be. Eaton Rapids is your “step off”
destination to remember the yesteryears. .... Experience the Island Way
of Life!

WILD WILD WEST THEME

It’s a costume contest for your Airstream that will take place on
Saturday, September 16th.

Here’s how it works:
1. Decorate your coach and dress the part to fit the Wild Wild West
theme.
2. Be sure to put a box out in front of your Airstream, because the
voting happens with canned goods & hygiene products!
3. Once you’ve got things decorated, go around and see what your
fellow campers have come up with, and vote for your favorites by
leaving hygiene products & non-perishables outside their coach.
You’ve got until 3pm!
4. Judges will be coming around 3-4pm to take photos, and count
up and collect the goods to determine a winner!
5. Winner will be announced at the closing ceremony Saturday
evening and all donated goods will go to benefit Heart & Hands.

Sanitation Station

A sanitation station is located about a half mile north of downtown at
301 Market Street. As you drive in, a white Department of Public
Service garage will be on your left. The station is straight ahead inside
a small cyclone fenced-in area. The sanitation station is open until 3
pm on Sunday .

“Each town has a story, and our goal is to
get those that are just driving by on any
given day to stop and hear it.”

Live Riveted

These are the cornerstones, the rivets, upon which founder Wally
Byam built Airstream and challenged us, “To strive endlessly to stir
the venturesome spirit.” He encouraged all “to open a whole world
of new experiences.” New experiences and possibilities are
everywhere. They are found in the opportunity to learn to play the
guitar or write a memoir. In the opportunity to practice yoga on
a mountaintop or take a hike with a loved one. They are found
in the opportunity to make a change or keep going.
And when we awaken our venturesome spirits, we come alive. We feel
hopeful. Passionate. We not only feel inspired, but we want to inspire
others.

We’re engaged. Present. We’re riveted. Live Riveted.
