Trichen Rinpoche, is the spiritual successor to the King of Dharma
Je Tsongkhapa and occupies the golden throne of the great
Monastery of Ganden.

The Dalai Lama is not the
Head of the Gelug School

The Dalai Lama is often thought to be the leader of the Gelug
School, but this position belongs officially to the Ganden Tripa. He is
the actual head of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism.
The title of the Ganden Tripa is not a reincarnation lineage but an
appointed title; though there are reincarnations of the Gaden Tripas
who are held in high esteem.
The reincarnations of Ganden Tripas are one of the highest ranked
reincarnations in Tibet. The Ganden Tripa and their reincarnations
were often chosen as tutors to the Dalai Lamas and Panchen
Lamas.
During the absence of the Dalai Lama, the Ganden Tripa or their
reincarnations were appointed as Regents of Tibet.

REINCARNATION HIERARCHY

The hierarchy of the Gelugpa reincarnations:

1. Tulkus who were incarnations of previous Regents and Ganden
Tripas being the highest

2. Tulkus of the Great Assembly (Tsogchen/ Tsokchen Tulku)
3. Tulkus of the College (Dratsang Tulku)
4. Tulkus of the regional house (Khangtsen Tulku)

Tulku

“Tulku” is a Tibetan word meaning
“transformation body,” or
“Nirmanakaya.” In Tibetan Buddhism,
a tulku is the emanation
(reincarnation) of an enlightened

活佛master. In Chinese, Tulkus are called

“Huofo” ( ) which translates as
Living Buddha.
