BOND GARDEN SERVICESSIMON BONDELDWICKBINGLEY01274 56743907846 [email protected] TRIMMEDMOWING & TURFINGTREES FELLED/PRUNEDFENCING/PLANTINGIn the book, ‘ ELDWICK A New Era 1871to 1911’, it is described how, in a period ofless than forty years a ‘new Eldwick’ cameto exist, with several villa homes, from1871, a new Board school in 1877, theWesleyan Chapel in 1888 and StLawrence’s Church in 1893. Theremarkable arrival of what could be called,‘houses of distinction’ was that large, detached, multi roomed, stone homes, some even with a coach house, plusperhaps an acre of land, were built byincomers. Mill owners, merchants andtradesmen, previously occupying propertiesin Manningham, Heaton and Horton partsof Bradford, decided to move out of town torural Eldwick. In the past, by request, and withcooperation by residents, it has beenpossible to trace the origin and history ofparticular houses in this ‘new Eldwick’. Notonly were the houses built but, also ofnecessity, access to them by newly createdlanes or roads were laid down, such asProspect Road, off Sheriff Lane. SamuelCrowther was recorded as living atHighfield House in Prospect Road before1881, as a retired fruit merchant fromManningham, following the family’s shop inHeaton. His new Eldwick property had oneand a half acres of land in which, inretirement, he developed a market gardenbut he also spent hours on the moorseeking out flints, arrowheads andartefacts of long ago. Samuel amassedsuch a large amount that it was eventuallydisplayed as his named collection inCartwright Hall.Samuel died in 1901 and the housecame into the possession of the Hornefamily, as Prospect House, with Uriah whostarted out life as a draper’s clerk butbecame a grocer, together with hisbrothers, Albert Ernest, Joseph and John. They took over a long established grocersand millers shop in Commercial Street,Shipley under the new title of HorneBrothers. Newspaper adverts featured theprovision of Thorleys Poultry Spice fromthe shop, promoting excellent eggproduction! Business blossomed, to theextent that further shops were opened inboth Baildon and Frizinghall. Josephcontinued running the business but Albertbecame involved in local politics, at onetime leader of the Shipley Council andcollector of taxes for Eldwick and Morton.Uriah took up a very different employmentby joining the Yorkshire Penny Bank inShipley, later becoming an estate agentand valuer at The Mart. In Eldwick, Uriahwas very involved with the WesleyanChapel and in village life. He was acommittee member of the Eldwick 1897Diamond Jubilee event, held opposite theschool field, with sports and games, followed by a group photograph tocommemorate the occasion. Uriah came toa very unfortunate and rather dramatic end.Having worked late in his office in Shipley,on Monday 26 March 1906, he rushed tocatch the 9.12 Skipton train. A porter, lateras witness, stated Uriah reached to stepinto the carriage but fell backwards onto theplatform and became unconscious. He wascarried into the Ladies Waiting Room andDoctor Ellis arrived in ten minutes, only topronounce Uriah had probably died fromheart failure. Mary, with six children was stillat Prospect House and was recorded livingthere in 1921.Ronald Horne, born in 1898 was theyoungest member of the family living atProspect House in 1901 with parents Uriahand Mary Ellen plus four siblings and hewent on to join the Royal Engineers, as onlya teenager, for the First World War. Soon, Incombat, he was gassed and subsequentlyhospitalised for three months but, oncereturned to duty in France he was shot. In hisfirst hand account to the family later, herecalled how he had survived.Thought to bedead, he was thrown onto cart of deadcomrades, by the Germans. When theyrealized he was still alive, he was sent to aprisoner of war camp in Poland which wascalled Sprottau. Picture shows Ronald, onthe right, on a set created by prisoners forentertainment.Even when the war ended on November11th in 1918, all the prisoners in the campwere not liberated until mid-December.Within a month of his return home, he wassent to fight in Palestine in the Sinai andPalestine campaign against the Ottomans. That war involved battles like those in Gazaand Beersheba, as well as the capture ofJerusalem in 1917. Extensive Armyrecords show how Ronald at one time wasreported missing, later judged to have adisability due to the effects of gas andfinally discharged in 1920, with a pensionof 16 shillings weekly. Even though Ronaldtook up a position of a cashier at a local millin Bingley for many years, he suffered fromdepression and what today might beregarded as Post Traumatic StressDisorder. 1927 was the date of hismarriage at the Eldwick Wesleyan Chapelto Madeline Ackroyd of Eldwick and theylived at Heathcote in Otley Road. Ronald’sdemise was as shocking as that of Uriah. In1949, due to suffering from depression,Ronald was given treatment at MenstonHospital, which consisted of electriccompulsive therapy. After three successivetreatments, Ronald later died from a heartattack at home. The hospital wasexonerated from blame, since it was saidthat ‘the treatment had been properlyadministered.’ There cannot be manyhouses, like Prospect, whose inhabitantshad such macabre tales to tell!We deliver fresh, gift-wrapped flowers locally,7 days a week with prices starting at£25.00+ delivery.Beautiful Wedding FlowersFuneral & Sympathy FlowersSpecial Occasions Gift Wrapped PlantsTel: 01274 563750Flowers by Eldwick Post OfficeProfessionally covering all aspects of domestic, commercial & industrial electrical workIndustrial machinery automation & fault diagnosticsData cable installationsOver 37 years professional experience in theelectrical industryApproved installer of Smart Electric Vehiclecharging pointsRemote Aico electronic monitoring of damp &mould in rental propertiesInstallation of Positive Air Input Systems forreduction of condensationCity & Guilds trainedTel: 01274 511433 (Eldwick)TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED211677Andrew TraceyPlumbing and Heating Services(Eldwick)l Central Heating Systemsl Boiler Exchangesl Bathroom Installationsl Tilingl General PlumbingTel: 01274 967710/07799 536605AIRE VALLEYBUILDING & ROOFINGCONTRACTORS20 WARREN AVENUE, ELDWICK,BINGLEY BD16 3BZVAT No. 698 0619 87TEL No. 01274 562613Mobile No. 07836 787938www.airevalleybuilders.co.ukEmail-airevalleybuilders@live.co.uk

We canof course so easily do so even in just a matterof seconds (including when reading!) TV andradio news bombards us daily and if we findourselves online browsing the internet or onsocial media, then we are up against invisiblealgorithms designed to keep us swiping, scrolling and clicking for hours. Even thepace of life itself can find us exclaiming that‘There is simply no time to think!’.This month bring us to Ash Wednesday(Feb 18th) and the beginning of Lent. Lent isa season in the church calendar when weremember Jesus’ time in the wilderness as heprepared for his ministry. For Christians Lentis an important time for us to examine our ownlives as we prepare to celebrate Easter andthe Good News that Jesus died for our sinsand rose again offering us the opportunity tobe at peace with God in a restoredrelationship that we were created for. Some people give something up during Lent, others do something different or take upsomething new. These disciplines can behelpful, but Lent also offers us somethingelse. In a world of digital noise and demandsfor our attention, this season offers us a rareopportunity to slow down and reflect on whatall our busyness and rushing around is reallyall about.Perhaps over the coming weeks you couldregularly find take some time to turn offdistractions, find somewhere quiet if you can,and ask God to speak to you this season? There will be opportunities to do this inchurch – why not come and join us? If youprefer something at home you may find someof the resources in this link useful :https://www.24-7prayer.com/lent-and-easterprayers/Whatever you do, don’t do or start doingthis Lent, I pray that you might find someheadspace to gain a fresh insight on themeaning of life.
