CUBCRAFTERS’
NOSEWHEEL XCUB ‘NX’
Following what they say “was a year-long public Market Survey
effort,” CubCrafters has officially decided to certify and offer a
nosewheel option for its Part 23 certified aircraft, the CC-19 XCub.
“ Placing a nosewheel on a modern Cub type aircraft certainly surprised some
people, but the overwhelming public response has been positive, especially
amongst the more than 300 pilots who had the opportunity to fly the airplane
during the Market Survey phase,” comments Brad Damm, CubCrafters VP of Sales &
Marketing. “A nosewheel equipped XCub is a very easy airplane to fly that takes off
shorter, lands shorter and cruises faster than the tailwheel version. Once a pilot is in the
airplane and experiences it, the advantages are obvious.”
“Engaging our customers in a Market Survey effort for this new nosewheel option has
been hugely important,” says Patrick Horgan, President of CubCrafters.
We went into this process not entirely sure if the market wanted
to accept a nosewheel-type personal adventure Cub. There is no
question now; we have had people wanting to place deposits for
this aircraft from day one. Our customers have made it very
clear that they want us to build this airplane.
The company also notes that hundreds of hours of real-world use by a variety of pilots
of varying skill levels during the Market Survey phase led to many design improvements
that wouldn’t otherwise have been possible in an internal-only development setting.
Current and prospective customers were able to have a large influence on the final design
of the nosewheel option for the aircraft.
“The added capabilities and value offered by the new nosewheel option are
game-changing” continues Horgan. “The XCub is easily convertible between nosewheel
and tailwheel, so you really get two airplanes in one. A fast, modern, easy-to-fly, tricycle
gear aircraft and a traditional big-tyre tailwheel Cub together. Both are very capable

STOL aircraft designed for the backcountry missions at which CubCrafters’ airplanes
have always excelled.” With an extremely robust trailing-link nosewheel assembly and
large tundra tyres as an option for the mains, the nosewheel equipped XCub is capable
of handling primitive landing strips and most off-airport type operations. Landing loads
on the nosewheel are transmitted to the airframe by a heavy-duty truss designed just for
this application, whilst the entire nosewheel assembly itself is a bolt-on option that can
be removed should the owner want to convert the airplane to a tailwheel configuration.
“This is something I’ve looked forward to for a long time,” comments Jim Richmond,
CubCrafters’ Founder and CEO. “I’ve always believed that back-country flying should
be open to more than just tailwheel rated pilots, and it’s exciting to see that vision now
becoming a reality!”
The XCub programme has achieved a number of significant milestones in its short
history. After initial FAA certification in June 2016, the XCub was the first United
States’ General Aviation aircraft to achieve non-TSO’d avionics approval for the Garmin
G3X system in 2017. In 2019, CubCrafters collaborated with Lycoming and Hartzell
to offer the new light weight CC393i fuel injected 215 horsepower engine and a new
high-performance PathFinder three-blade composite propeller, for the XCub. Badged
as the ‘NX Cub’ for aircraft leaving the factory in the nosewheel configuration, the new
tricycle gear option is available now on experimental XCubs through the company’s
Builder Assist programme and as it is based on another certified airframe, CubCrafters
expects to achieve FAA Part 23 certification early next year.

Pipistrel teams up with Green Motion
Green Motion and Pipistrel are announcing a game-changing
partnership to develop a universal, future-proof, environmentally
friendly, turnkey charging technology for electric airplanes.
This new charging infrastructure will be in line with approvals of EASA,
European Union Aviation Safety Agency.
By obtaining of the first ever type certificate for an
electric airplane from EASA, Pipistrel with its Velis
Electro has indeed affirmed that the electric market
will grow. With its FLIGHT XT, one of the world’s
first electric plane chargers already in use in two
airports in Switzerland, Green Motion has gained
extensive knowledge of electric airplane
charging.
Slovenia’s world-renowned small
aircraft producer and Swiss’s electric
vehicles’charging pioneer share a lot in
common. Both have complementary
technologies setting the future of
electric mobility. Pipistrel is shaping
the aviation industry by developing
and delivering cutting-edge electric
airplane. Green Motion is raising the bar
of electric vehicle charging for cars, two-wheelers,
trucks, airplanes and Urban Air Mobility (UAM).
Both companies are putting user experience and
exceptional quality at the heart of everything they
do, to foster environmentally friendly and affordable
ways of transportation.

Now they join forces to create an electric airplane charging solution that will bring:
• Universality: currently, there is no standard for electric plane charging. As a result, each
airport is equipped differently. This partnership will enable to create a worldwide standard
in electric plane charging.
• Future-Proof: Green Motion being at the cutting edge of EV charging and Pipistrel at
the forefront of electric airplane manufacturing, the two companies will design a charging
solution that is here to last and evolve with the latest technologies on the market.
•Turnkeyinstallation:the innovative electric aircraft charging solution will be easy to install and
combined with a photovoltaic system, as solar technologies also help airports receive subsidies.
It can be complemented with cutting-edge storage solutions to enable self-consumption.
• A network of electric planes charging stations: using Green Motion’s software expertise
and track record in creating and operating EV networks, the two companies envision to
create the first EV charging network for electric planes and UAM.
• Setting the standard: Green Motion and Pipistrel are members of SAE International’s
AE-7D Aircraft Energy Storage and Charging Committee, which gives them a privileged
position in the setup of an internationally accepted aerospace standard in e-flight charging.

Ivo Boscarol, founder and president of Pipistrel, says “I am dedicating my life to contributing
to a cleaner atmosphere and emission-free aviation.Type certifying the first all-electric airplane
was the necessary step towards this goal. As part of the endeavour, Pipistrel was forced to
develop and produce almost everything in house, including the chargers. However, to assure a
significant change to cleaner atmosphere, widespread use of electric aircraft is a must, and we
need to spread the network of chargers to airports all over the world. This cannot be achieved
by Pipistrel alone, but with a skilled and distinguished partner as Green Motion, this becomes
a reality. I am happy that our SkyCharge stations will grow further with its potential into a
common new brand SkyCharge by Green Motion and Pipistrel, to offer electric aircraft users
a breakthrough, connected and a turn key service all over the world”.
François Randin, founder and CEO of Green Motion said “Green Motion has worked on electric
airplane and UAM charging solutions for over two years. We see the beginning of this new market
like we did more than 11 years ago with electric cars. After being a pioneer for electric cars, we are
now a trail blazer in electric aircrafts charging too. That is why we are so proud and honoured to
partner with Pipistrel,a world-renowned aircraft producer which has complementary technology
and mindset to ours, so we can define the future of electric planes together.”
Pipistrel and Green Motion, two companies with revolutionary ideas and cutting-edge
solutions are now putting their world class engineering teams together to shape and define
the future of electric planes, to deliver the best flying experience, significantly reduce cost of
flying as well as air and noise pollution.

ALL
CUBS

The American Legend Aircraft Company has unveiled its MOAC, a.k.a.
the Mother of all Cubs, a backcountry edition of the Legend Cub. Whilst
rooted in the legendary Super Cub, MOAC is a thorough remake and all
new construction from the expert hands of American Legend. MOAC
incorporates numerous performance enhancing features and is purposely
built for backcountry operations.
MOAC is the most exciting way to fly low and slow, whilst driving performance to the extreme.
Horsepower on the Legend Cub has more than doubled with MOAC and current availability of
Titan engines from Continental.Up to 208 horsepower (187–195 continuous) results in remarkable
take-off and landing performance on its already strengthened airframe. A Catto fixed pitch,
Whirlwind ground adjustable and Hartzell constant speed are amongst the many propeller options.
Flaps comprise 20- and 40-degree full-span from wing root to aileron. Leading edge slats and
aerodynamic square wing tips with optimised wing tip vortices also contribute to MOAC’s
remarkable performance. MOAC can take-off in its own length and behind all that thrust
are balanced ailerons, highly effective with a light touch on the control stick. The tail surfaces
on MOAC are sized to appropriately balance the aircraft’s higher power-weight ratio.
“To appreciate these improvements alone, the aircraft must be flown, as simply watching
in amazement does not complete the sensation,” stated John Wisdom, CFI and Legend
demonstration pilot.
Perhaps the most critical component for backcountry pilots is landing gear performance. If you
do not remember the days of taxiing and landing on bungee gear and steel springs, your derrière
160 African Pilot August 2020
and jarred teeth certainly do. The pinnacle SPORT PILOT
of modern landing gear comes from TK1
Racing with its Shock Monster front
suspension. Shock Monster is a nitrogen
charged air / oil shock assembly. Designed
for the harshest of bush flying zones, the oil
dampened system eats up all the landing
aircraft’s stored energy on compression. A
dual shock setup delivers the security of
redundancy, unbelievable cushioning and,
best of all, zero bounce back. Shock travel of
4.50 inches equates to about 12–14 inches
at the wheel. Combined with the Legend
Cub’s custom extended ‘cabane vee (landing gear,) the Shock Monster system summons the use
of oversized tundra tyres and high-performance brakes. MOAC with Shock Monster nearly
ensures pinpoint landings with a minimum of rollout.
Longer aircraft legs invariably mean a pilot wants to carry more luggage. MOAC features
a turtle deck opening that gives access to extended aft fuselage storage. Cargo doors and a
folding rear seat allow storage in the mid-fuselage area for unbelievable carrying capacity.
A turtle deck hatch improves accessibility even more, offering two levels of storage and
accommodation for longer items, such as a stretcher. The Legend Cub fuselage also allows
for L-21 style extended rear windows and a skylight offering near 360-degree viewing.
Extra performance on MOAC also comes from 40-gallons-usable fuel tanks. The extra fuel capacity
allows for longer roundtrip flights without a fuel stop, such as into and out of remote areas where
fuel is not available. Since its introduction, only the Legend Cub offers doors on both sides of the
fuselage for simplified ingress / egress and a full-open cockpit feel. The cockpit on the Legend Cub
has always been more extravagant than one would expect on a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants Cub
and MOAC is no exception. Most are equipped with glass panels and iPad or handheld panel
mounts.LED lighting and Lithium-ion batteries have become standard.Engine monitoring brings
great awareness to what is happening up front and an autopilot does the same outside giving the
pilot more time to scan displays of traffic, terrain and weather. For today’s tablet, smartphone and
other device equipped pilots and passengers,USB power ports and panel-powered headset jacks are
available at all seats.
“After years of lessons learned, including an 80-year Piper history, we build our Cubs to
alleviate potential problems,” stated Darin Hart, president of American Legend. “This includes
fit-and-finish, engine performance and control systems. Doors and trim fit to perfection and we
often use common PMA-standard parts for easy serviceability. Our engine choices provide hours
of reliability and proven service. Placement of physical controls are optimised to ensure freedom of
motion from stop to stop without annoying interference issues so often present in other designs,”
Hart concluded. MOAC can be certified to a gross weight up to 2,000 lbs. As much as 180 lbs of
that weight can be placed in the third seat of MOAC as passenger or cargo.
