Pasar Antik
Kuala Lumpur

The flea market scene of Kuala Lumpur is said
to have its roots at the back lane of Petaling
Street in an alley known as Lorong Petaling, in
the city’s famous Chinatown area.
Some say it is the oldest such market in Malaysia
where used and discarded items are traded on
the street at relatively cheap prices.
Some 80 vendors which occupy 261 lots
peddle a variety of goods which range from
discarded household items, accessories,
watches and gadgets, used books, stamps and
old photographs, including occasionally some
vintage and collectibles.
Today, in an effort to promote it as a tourist
attraction, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is
giving a total makeover to the flea market
commonly known as pasar karat locally by
turning it into an Antique Market.

Pasar Loken Ipoh

Open every Sunday morning, the Pasar Loken
in Ipoh is considered among the best flea market
sites in the country - both in terms of the number
of vendors, as well as its product varieties.

Located in Jalan Horley, in the new town area of
Ipoh city, it is known as 'Memory Lane or fondly
referred to as 'loken' or 'Pasar Karat’ (literally
means rustic market) by the locals.

Th‎ is so-called rustic market had its humble
beginning in Jalan Laksamana before it was
relocated nearer to Sungai Kinta and later to the
present site, where the Ipoh City Council finally
gave its stamp of approval - as a unique street
market with an added attraction of its own.

Pasar Loken Ipoh starts to bustle with activity as
early as 6.30am.‎ It’s good as they say, to go early
for some 'happy hunting' before it gets crowded,
as the weather could become too humid and
sweaty.

This market has a reputation of being a treasure
trove of things antique, vintage, retro, and
collectible, including the usual secondhand
i‎ tems at reasonable prices.

However, like any other flea markets everywhere
in the world, prices are usually negotiable, so
don’t hesitate to haggle.

Prakash Jakathesan -
Tiffin Carrier
Collector

You have a collection when you positively know
you want more of a certain thing. It’s when just
one simply won’t do. That best sums up die-hard
collector of tiffin carriers Prakash R Jakathesan
from Penang.

Prakash and his wife, Punita Muthiah started
collecting tiffin carriers or stacked food
containers in 2007. In 2014, their ensemble of
more than185 tiffin carriers earned them a spot
in the Malaysia Book of Records. To date, their
collection has increased not so much in numbers
but more in the variety and rarity of each item.

The couple’s greatest achievement was when
the Penang Museum h‎ eld a tiffin carrier exhibition
in their honour, themed ‘The Revolution of Tiffin
Carriers’ which ran for three months for the
viewing public.

The oldest tiffin carrier in their collection was
made in 1870. It is a charcoal tiffin, meaning
food placed inside this carrier can be warmed up
by charcoal at the bottom, so it stays hot when
food is served.

In Malaysia, the enamel floral motif Straits
Chinese or Peranakan tiffin carriers which were
manufactured in Europe are still a sought-after

are made of stainless steel or aluminium and

What’s unique and unusually different about this
flea market in Perlis - the northern most state of
Malaysia, is its location in a rubber plantation in
Kampung Kubang, Pauh, about 3km from the
