As the year comes to a close, it is a bitter sweet ending. Lots of hard work
has been put into our year of philanthropy. Personally, it has been
exceptionally rewarding. Reading all the motivating stories coming from around the world about
our sisters and brothers, has been…well for the lack of a better word, “Inspiring”.

I bid you farewell as your Bulletin Editor and happily introduce Kaycee Headley from Oregon as
the 2018-2019 ESA IC News Bulletin Editor. I’m excited to continue reading the inspiring articles
and activities that lies before us in the coming year.

Thank you, Sandy for the opportunity to be a part of your administration. It has been more than
a pleasure working with you, as well as continuing our friendship that has blossomed since the
day we met at the Brisbane airport. I treasure you and everything you do for this deserving
organisation.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in Phoenix!

God Bless ESA.

Good Evening Ladies,

IC is right around the corner! Can you believe it?

There are several workshops that we need to know how many will be attending for materials,
etc. as they are hands on workshops. They are the Creative Card Designs, the Genealogy
workshop and Hope for Heroes.

Please let me know if you are wanting to attend those workshops.

The following page is a Workshop Schedule for reference.

Hope for Heroes Chairman
Deana Walters, Arizona
[email protected]

Hi Everyone,

As you read this last newsletter, your state conventions are over and you are on to a new year.

I do hope you celebrated all of your great accomplishments for your community/state projects,
Easter Seals, St. Jude and Hope for Hero's.

One thing I hope you will do is share all that you have done this past year with your successor.'
Please share all the contacts that you have, the things that worked and the things that did not
and even ideas that did not happen, but could happen this coming year. Communication is a
key to get things done. Don't be afraid to try something new; creating new ideas and having
fun could lead you to meet new people along the way and potential new ESA members!!

Thanks to all of you who did a project, big or small, you must know you made a difference for a
soldier or a member of his family. You have put a smile on a face that you will never meet, but
"U" made a difference to them or for them or their family and you need to feel good!!

Many heartfelt thanks for all that you did and will do in the coming years. Hope to see many
of you at IC. Please join me in the Hope for Hero's workshop. Check your agenda for time
and location.

Hugs to all. You are all my hero's for helping our Military. Be proud and continue to do what
you can no matter how big or small.....it makes a difference.

Sr. St. Jude Chair
Celeste Webb, Illinois
[email protected]

Do you believe IC Convention is just around the corner? I’m so excited! I can’t wait to see the
St. Jude total this year. I was very proud of Illinois ESA for raising $1,492,295.66 for St. Jude! When
we add all of our efforts together, what will we have? Think of all of the Dream Homes, the radio-
thons, the bake sales and wine tastings, all of our efforts to help save kids, to fulfill Danny’s Dream,
what will the total be? When we look at the big picture, the only thing that matters is that our
efforts helped save kids. That’s the bottom line.

When the chapter
monies were
announced in Illinois the
chair mentioned local
kids that we helped.
I’ve shared some of
their stories this year.
Their struggles have
inspired us to work a
little harder and to be
thankful for the healthy
kids in our lives. We
have to keep working,
we have to raise more
money until the survival
rate is 100%, not 80%. In
1962 the survival rate
was 20% so we’ve
come a long way but
we have more work to
do.

I challenge you to push yourself a little harder, to raise a little more than last year, to volunteer
another day to help the kids @ St. Jude. Registration is now open for the Memphis Marathon and
for the Walks to End Childhood Cancer. They need volunteers at both of those events not just
runners. Register today as ESA is a sponsor of both these events and we need your help to make
it work.

I want to thank Sandy Alexander for the opportunity to be the St. Jude chair. It was an inspiring
job to have. See you in Phoenix! Carpe Diem, Celeste Webb, St. Jude Sr. Chair

EasterSeals Chair
Theda Hall, Arkansas
[email protected]

Wow! Has the time flown this year? It doesn’t seem that long ago that I
accepted this position. And, it has been a very rewarding experience for
me. Thank you, Sandy Alexander for this appointment.

Well, our IC Convention in Arizona is just weeks away and I am still gathering information from all
the states. State Presidents (past and present) and Easterseals Coordinators (past & present),
please insure that your state has reported their Easterseals totals. We are having a great year
and I would like to see all states that participated in Easterseals in any way to submit a report.
The reporting period is from April 1, 2017 thru Mar 31, 2018.

And, don’t forget the Easterseals workshop on Saturday, July 21 from 1:30 – 2:15 pm in the
st
Maryvale Rooms A & B. We will have a local Easterseals Development Director to speak with us
and a family (ambassadors) who can tell us how Easterseals has impacted their lives. In addition,
we will share with each other the many ways that the states can help support Easterseals. I am
looking forward to meeting all the Easterseals Chairs (both past & present). So, come one, come
all!

And, thank you to all of the 2017-18 Easterseals Chairs who have “INSPIRED” your state and me
to participate in this banner year! I am so blessed to have such a great team in ESA.

Rho Chi Legacies

Membership Director St. Charles, MO
Tracy Swanson, Colorado
[email protected]

When Sandy Hosack of Rho Chi chapter/St.
Charles sponsored her granddaughter Brittany
in 2008, it marked the beginning of what has
become a wonderful Rho Chi tradition of
grandparent/grandchild ESA Legacy stories.
Sandy explains, “I have three sons, so when my
first grandchild was a granddaughter, it was
only natural that Brittany and I would become
especially close, I guess. She started attending
ESA activities with me when she was about ten,
first as a DESA then as an Elan. I was on the
state board in those days and we traveled
together to ESA conventions. When I had a
board meeting, other members would take
Brittany to visit in their rooms, or shop, or to the
pool, so she got to know ESAers all over the
state at an early age. She became a Rho Chi
member as soon as she turned 18 and hasn’t
looked back. She’s been an officer in our own
chapter as well as on the state council several times over, and I so enjoy what a great leader
she has become in her own right. On my 60 birthday, she gave me a birthday card that said,
th
‘Thank you for allowing me to be part of ESA. I’ve become more confident, and outgoing, and I
love the time we spend together and with our ESA family’ – it was so special to me.

“When Ruth’s grandson John joined our chapter this spring, they became the 4 pair, joining
th
Brittany and me, Mary Alice and Ella, and Kathy and Miranda. We’re getting another one soon…
as soon as another one of our fine young Elans turns 18, and we can’t wait to welcome him too!
I don’t think these members are ESA’s future, they’re our PRESENT and we are so proud of them!”

ESA relatives of active members are eligible to join ESA at a reduced membership rate no matter
where they live. Welcome someone from YOUR family to OUR ESA family today. Get details

Terri and Shari Stapleton Smith had a
wonderful conversation and Shari
shared with Terri what being in ESA
and becoming a member of the
Executive Board meant to her. Shari
shared the wonderful things that she
has learned and how she has grown
as a person in ESA.

Colorado’s Inspirational Member Recipient
Phyllis Minch was recognized at the ESA
Colorado State convention in Vail, Colorado on
May 20, 2018 for her outstanding achievement
to inspire.

Phyllis is a Navy veteran and has spent many
hours working with veterans of all the services in
the Loveland, Colorado area. She has served as an escort for veterans of World War II, the Korean
War and Vietnam on Honor Flights to Washington, D.C. This May she was honored as a veteran on
the next to the last Honor Flight to be planned for the state of Colorado. It has been suggested that
she accept the position of coordinating future flights as Colonel Stan Cass that began the project
passed away in April.

She is a lightning rod for projects that benefit many in her community but
especially the veterans. She has organized a breakfast every Saturday
morning at the Golden Corral in Loveland that is attended by more than
100 veterans of all services.

She has been the Hope for Heroes Chairman for several years because of
her devotion to the project and her love of the service men and women.

Phyllis has served as Easter Seals Chair, St. Jude Coordinator and many
other officers but she has a special place in her heart for Hope for Heroes.
She is a Hero to her ESA sisters.

Not one to crave the spotlight, she serves quietly but extraordinarily and is
an inspiration to us all.

She greets everyone with that million dollar smile and she is always happy and wants everyone to be
happy too. She is a wonderful ambassador for ESA and you can’t be down when you are with her.

No one is more deserving of this honor and I am proud to have been the State President when she
was recognized for her love of service.

IC Workshop Coordinator, Robin Bussey presented Phyllis with her certificate.
13

Janice Rawls was presented
Louisiana State Convention Inspire
award for her fresh ideas and can
do spirit.

Zeta Nu Chapter members were recognized with IC President’s inspiration award at their
Tennessee State Convention. The chapter is forward thinking, recruiting new members at their
“Meet-Up” events. The Members accepting the award are: Jennifer Gailey, Pam Brown, Jessica
Rudolph, Denise Freitag, and Kathy Johnson.

14

Lucy Roeder has been a member of ESA for
75 years and counting. State President
Teresa Duhamel says when you think of
Legacy members, Lucy Roeder will
immediately come to mind. Lucy has
pledged many new members which
includes her daughter-in-law, Trudi and now
Trudi has pledged her daughter Sis Roeder.
A truly multi- generational chapter.

A former Washington State President and
the current Washington State Education
Chair, Lucy has so much more to share and
she encourages each member to be their
best. Lucy remains steadfast in her
leadership roles and an inspiration for her
family, her chapter, and for the Washington
State Council. Lucy will greet you with a
welcoming smile and open arms of
friendship.

15

Tammy Reynolds is
a new member of
ESA and jumped in
with great ideas
and enthusiasm. She has been in charge of special
projects which in Ohio means at our 3 meetings
special things are done for different
organizations. She is creative and helpful and has
help make our meetings very meaningful.

Marilyn Geier is an ESA member of
more than 55 years of service. One
who is always there for her ESA sisters
working on all projects and
sometimes chairing. A true leader
and one who sets a great example
for others to follow. She inspires and
encourages her sisters to do their very
best. She also drives 40 miles round
trip to come to meetings. Loves
sharing ideas and always doing it with a smile. 16

When the normal progression of
2nd VP to 1st VP to President was
broken, Debbie Langfitt whispered
to Eveleen Harrison "I'll do
whatever you need". Not feeling
quite prepared, she became the
1st VP last year and the incoming
Virginia State President for 2018-
19. She lives her theme of "Design
Your Gift for ESA". Also when asked
to do an Inspiration Project and
then document it, Debbie led her
chapter in the "Swing for Kids" golf
tournament for St. Jude and put
the information on the ESA
website.

Greetings from the Land of the Midnight Sun.

The Midnight Sun it is - as the sun rose today at 4:33 am and will set at 11:35pm.
The hours between sunrise and sunset are more like twilight as it never really
gets super dark. However, after the 21 of June it will start to go the other way but we will still
st
have longer days until end of August. So lots of time to be outdoors!

The ladies of Alpha Iota
Anchorage had one last activity
for the year. We made a visit to
Bean’s Café/Kids Kitchen (facility
for homeless) with a donation
check in memoriam of our sister,
Dawn Bishop-Kleweno. This was a
project dear to Dawn’s heart as
she donated many volunteer
hours, monies, and in kind items to
them .(see pic) Then in true Iota

tradition we had to eat so we
went to Lucky Wish Bone
Restaurant - one of Dawn’s
favorite spots.

A Jewel Pin Ceremony was conducted by Claudia Hale for Ann Torgernson, our newest member.
Ann is a retired elementary school teacher and a longtime friend of Linda Gratteri. She and her

With a saddened Heart, but with smiles on our faces we bid good bye

I’m sure, when all the activities start again in the fall and she isn't with

Marianne Steentsma, President (2017-18)
Carmel Mulcahy, Newsletter Editor

Below is a transcript of an article regarding out-going Queensland
President Marianne Steentsma courtesy of the Ipswich Star Newspaper.

Silkstone resident Marianne Steentsma has always been passionate about her community,
and has always had a strong sense to give back.

The long term Ipswich resident loves her city so much that she worked at the library at St
Mary’s College for a number of years before being asked to teach their music classes.

She also taught students how to sing with private lessons and was also involved with the
Ipswich Orpheus Chorale.

Along with her husband Bill, she has also been heavily involved with the Ipswich Toastmasters
and recently they expanded out into Springfield to establish the Springfield Toastmasters’
Group.

But one
organisation which
she loved to be
part of was ESA
International.

ESA International is
a worldwide
organisation which
fosters personal
achievement
through education,
service to the
community and
association. She
helped to establish
an Ipswich ESA
Branch but due to
low numbers, the group Under photo: KIND HEART Marianne Steentsma has helped
folded. thousands of Queenslanders over the years after being part
of ESA International Queensland Branch.

Keen to continue making a positive difference in the lives of others, Mrs. Steentsma became
involved in the Brisbane Branch and worked her way up to become the President of the
Queensland ESA International Group. This is a role which she held until recently when she
stepped down.

‘Whatever I have done in my life, I have always done it with passion and the desire to help
others,’ she said.

‘ESA Queensland has made a big difference in the lives of many as they run the ESA Wig
and Turban Service. This was to help people who were diagnosed with cancer,’ Mrs.
Steentsma said.

We raised money so people who had lost their hair due to chemotherapy can go in and
get a wig or a turban. For many people, losing their own hair caused embarrassment, and
they didn’t feel comfortable in going out, but through the Wig and Turban Service, they
could feel good about themselves.’

‘All the money we raise, we try to spread as much as possible to different organisations
which will benefit Queenslanders,’ Mrs. Steentsma said.

We are very proud of Marianne and all that she did and continues to do for not only ESA Australia,
but ESA International, as well.

ESA Australia is happy to announce Daphne Neilsen as the incoming

At this time, all the chapters
have installed their new
officers and we have
attended the Utah State Council meeting.
During the summer months most of our
chapters hold some type of social so that we
can still get together before we start our next
ESA year in September.

Our State Convention this year was held in
Ogden Utah. The theme for the weekend was
“A Weekend at the Beach”.

At our Friday night mixer, we all dressed in
beach attire and did skits for council meetings
and hosting the next State Convention. We
enjoyed the skits and the social event.

Our Saturday night installation dinner was lovely and everyone enjoyed the murder mystery
dinner event. Seeing charters dressed in their customs was hilarious.

Our next event is our first “Ride for a Child” motorcycle ride. It will be held in Salt Lake City on
Saturday June 16 . This is a Utah State Council event for St. Jude’s and we hope that we can
th
continue this next year. My daughter was kind enough to design a t-shirt for this event. Take a
look.

Our convention was hosted by by California Past
State Presidents - “The Keys”. They worked their
little fingers to the bone to make sure all members
had a grand time, and we did. We had a number
of informative speakers, topics ranging from how to
protect ourselves against heart attack and stroke
to how to protect ourselves from fraud.

We were especially happy to get to know our IC
Rep., Jaycee Peek. I hope you all get a chance to
meet this fun, outgoing, lovely lady. We so enjoyed
having her with us for the weekend. Jaycee, you
are always welcome to visit CSC!! I found out she
cries almost as easily as I.

Saturday afternoon was our awards luncheon
where we congratulated ourselves on all the hard
work we did throughout the year for our various
philanthropic projects.

Saturday night we announced our Outstanding First
Year member Ellen Hartley and our Outstanding
Member Sandy Burkhead. Congratulations to both
and I might add, both are well deserved.

We installed our 2018-2019 CSC President Rickie
Brown on Saturday night.

As you will see from the picture, we had a grand
time. I invite you all to all come have fun with us at
our convention next year in Dublin, Ca.
