As my year is fast coming to a close, I am
reflecting on this amazing year. As we know
ESA is made up of volunteers. Erma
Bombeck said, “Volunteers are the only
human beings on the face of the earth who
reflect this nation's compassion, unselfish
caring, patience, and just plain loving one
another.” I am so “inspired” by your heart of
service to those in need. Wherever we are
there are so many people who need a
loving caring person to make their day just a
little better and to give them hope in a
culture that seems to have forgotten them.

I would like to congratulate all of you that
sponsored a new member this year and a
big hello and welcome to all the new
pledges. ESA’s growth is vital to our moving
forward in our philanthropic endeavors. Helen Keller said. “Alone we can do so little, together
we can do so much”. Together in ESA we are making a difference in our communities and
around the world.

Some very important dates to celebrate in June are:

As the ESA year draws to a close, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks and
congratulations to everyone on behalf of all of us here at ESA Headquarters.
We remain constantly amazed by all you do in your communities, around this country and
around the world. We are uniquely blessed to be able to see all the amazing programs and
projects that come through our office each and every day and we feel very lucky to be able to
call so many of you friends.

In my speech at the Colorado State Convention this past weekend I talked about goal setting
for yourselves and for your chapter for the coming year, as well as the importance of being
mindful. This year I ask you to be mindful – of your time, of your energy, of your resources. We
never want you to lose your love for this great organization, and that means we all need to make
sure that we are preserving our valuable time to do the things we love. In this coming ESA year, I
hope you will review your chapter’s projects and programs and take the time to talk about them.
What is working? What isn’t? What can you bring into your chapter life that will make it more
FUN? And be sure to add “grow our membership” to your goals – new people will do nothing but
bring fun, new ideas, and a renewed energy to our group – ask a chapter that brought in a new
member this year!

Again, thank you for spending so much of your time with ESA. It takes a very special kind of person
to spend so much of their precious time in the service of others. You are all amazing.

Love,
Charlotte,
Tracy,
Deena,
Laurie
and

Linda Schmidt, Kansas

I want to inspire people. I want someone to look at me and say,
“because of you I didn’t give up.”….unknown

ESA sisters and brothers do so much to help others, day after day. Unselfishly
we give our time and monies to make a difference in other’s lives. We don’t do it for the
accolades and awards, but rather we do it just because. You never know when someone is
watching you throughout the day. Your actions say more than your words, and you never know
when you will Inspire someone, even when you were doing just what you do.

I know I’ve been Inspired by many ESA members these past 33 years. I’ve learned that I can do
great things with my friends, I’ve accepted challenges even when I didn’t think I could succeed
and I didn’t give up, and I’ve grown in my professional and personal lives. Most of all I hope that
I have Inspired someone along the way.

Take a minute to consider your ESA journey. Who Inspired you? Who did YOU Inspire to not give
up?

Thank you for making a difference in my life!

Much Love

If you are attending International Convention in Phoenix and planning to
receive recognition for 25 years of service or more, the June 15, 2018,
deadline is fast approaching. Email or mail the 2018 IC Convention Years
of Service Ceremony form (page xx) today. Confirmation emails have
been sent to those I’ve received a form from. Please do not send your pin
or bring it with you. See you at “Sunshine and Celebrations” in Phoenix in
July.

Workshop Coordinator
Robin Bussey, South Carolina
[email protected]

Wow, I cannot believe that it is only 2 short months
until we meet in Phoenix, Arizona for our
International Convention. We have all been so
busy with State Conventions that it seemed to
sneak up on us, but I am ready for the fun and
fellowship that we experience when we all come
together.

I am so excited about the Workshops that we are
offering this year! I know that you will find
something that will peak your interest during the
week. Don’t forget to pre-register for the Card
Designing, Hope for Heroes and the Genealogy
workshops so the presenters will have enough
materials for everyone. All you have to do is drop
me a line at [email protected]. That’s it!

This month I am pleased to highlight our Native American flute player Aaron White who will be
performing Saturday afternoon of convention.

Aaron is a Grammy nominated Native American musician, singer,
songwriter, composer, and lecturer on the Native American Flute
and music. He is based in Phoenix and is from the Dine
(Navajo/Ute) of Arizona. His musical influences come from
different experiences from the life he has lived and the people he
has met being in rock and blues bands and taking from his Native
roots and traditional influences and
values. Aaron has performed at the
Lincoln Center and The Museum of the
American Indian in New York City and
has done many performances for
major private corporations such as
Hermes of Paris, Chase Bank, the Super Bowl XLII New York Giants
party, Porsche Car company and Sprint to name a few. Be sure not
to miss this opportunity to enjoy such talent that he has to offer. If you
would like to learn more about Aaron go to his website, here.

See you in July

ESA Foundation Chairman
Ann Southall, Arkansas
[email protected]

It is almost hard to believe that in just a few weeks we will be in Phoenix for
IC 2018 Convention. It is incredible how fast years go by these days.

Because we are so near convention, this month, the ESA Foundation articles will address things
that will happen at IC Convention. The feature article this month will be on the ESA Foundation
Fund Fest. As many of you know, for many years, this is a fun kick off for the week. While we
have a lot of fun, it is great to raise funds for the Foundation. Linda Schmidt, from Kansas, has
taken on the job as Chair of Fund Fest this year and has been brainstorming ideas all year on
how to keep the tried and true fun of Fund Fest but, has also found some fun new things to
change it up a little. I hope you will all take time to drop by and have a fun evening with us.

I have also included information about the ESA Foundation Outing on Saturday, July 14. We still
have room and time for people to join us. Please check it out.

On Wednesday, July 15 at 8:30 am we will be doing credentials for each State. I know each of
the Counselors will be ready to go bright and early. Immediately following that will be the State
Counselors Workshop. We are looking forward to a good morning of information and fun with
Beth Sherron, State Counselor Chair and the other Directors.

On Friday, July 17, we will have our Annual Meeting. As in the past, we try to do as little business
as possible and show case what we do and what you support. We will have guest speakers and
a special presentation or two.

We hope you all plan to join us for all the fun-packed festivities for ESA and the Foundation. It is
always a fun week to catch up with friends too.

ESA Foundation Fund Fest

Linda Schmidt
ESA Fund Fest Chair

In a few weeks we will be congregating in Phoenix, AZ for IC Convention. I’ve been working hard
planning a fun and exciting ESA Foundation Fund Fest for you. I hope attending this event is in
your plans.

The ESAF Fund Fest will be held on Tuesday evening, July 17th, beginning at 7:00 pm. You won’t
want to miss playing various games such as Farkle, Black Jack, Horse Races, and Mexican Train.
There is no cost to play these games as you will be playing with chips, but you will have a great
time trying to beat your friends! There will also be a silent auction, and we need donated items
for it. Be sure to donate something you would want to win, please. There will also be an oral
auction of larger items, (ie. Baskets, purses, and quilts) donated by states and chapters. We still
need lots of those items.

Of course we will have your favorites, the ESAF Merchandise Table and Kard Kapers along with
a couple of new ways to support the Foundation. You spoke and I listened. Many of you felt
you could not participate in the Fund Fest because you couldn’t afford the dollar amount many
of the items reach. There will be two new ways to participate – a Giving Board and a Mystery
Box. The Mystery Box will include an item valued at over $100 and with a $5 donation you have
the opportunity to win this awesome item. The Giving Board is just that – you may choose to
make a tax deductible donation with cash, credit card or check and you will make a difference!

We are still in need of Table Sponsors. Donations begin at $100, and with that donation your
name will be proudly displayed on one of the tables.

Many have already volunteered to help set up, tear down, and work the event. Thank you! I will
be in touch with you closer to the event with the particulars. If you want to be a Table Sponsor,
donate an oral auction item, donate a silent auction item, or help in some way during the event
please complete the form on page 59 and send to me at the address on the sheet.

There is something for everyone during the evening and I hope you will join us as we make a
difference for the ESA Foundation! If you have any questions please contact me at
[email protected] or 913-486-2814. I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, July 17 in
th
Phoenix, AZ!

What a great response I got for this issue! I hope July will be the same.

I requested all State presidents and Editors to send me fun photos of their convention. And, boy did I get
them. Looks like everyone has been in true ESA form with all the obvious exuberance that is expressed. I
know some of you couldn’t participate because your conventions haven’t happened, yet. But don’t
worry, you have time to send me photos for next month. Once July is completed, I will combine the 2
months of convention collages in one digital copy for anyone who would like to get them printed or save
on their computer. You will be able to retrieve that from the ESA IC News Bulletin website.

You will also notice that there is a section of the President’s Inspirational Award recipients. If your state
isn’t represented, please be sure to send a photo of the Inspiring Member as well as a short explanation
why she had been chosen. I will have another section in the July edition. All of these exceptional people
deserve to be recognized by all their brothers and sisters of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, International.

Newsletter Contest Books

I received most of your books, but realize some of you haven’t completed the year of news, yet. The
deadline was 1 June, but I can give a little leeway on that date. If you will be later than the 10 , please
th
be sure to let me know so I can keep an eye out. Judging will begin very soon.

The states that I have received books from are:
Colorado, Florida, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma,
Oregon, Queensland, Texas, Wisconsin, and WSRC.

If your state/region is not listed and you did send it, please let me know ASAP. We need to track it down.

Hope for Heroes Chairman
Deana Walters, Arizona
[email protected]

Hello to all across the states!

I cannot believe this year is almost over. It has been a very rewarding year. I
hope all of you who had a project, a luncheon, a dinner or just sat with a soldier to chat, realize
you made a difference. The little things are the ones so many miss when away from home and
family and hopefully all of you placed a smile on a face of a soldier, a wife, or a child by what
you and/or your chapter members did this year.

Many of you have enjoyed your conventions by now and I do hope you all celebrated all the
good works that your states did this year. And I do hope you celebrated your good works for
Hope for Hero’s that you experienced this year. And that you will inspire your members to do
more next year.

I want to give a shout out to Ms. Leila and Phyllis who were on the honor flight on May 6 . Those
th
of you at Leadership got to hear Ms. Leila. What a wonderful person we all had the pleasure of
hearing and visiting with. She is a special lady and has an amazing story. Thanks again to Phyllis
Minch from Colorado for sharing her with us. And a big thank you to Phyllis for all of her untiring
work she has; and continues to do, for our military. These are our hero’s.

banquet.

Another shout out to Indiana
for their Hope for Hero’s
project. They had a Lu La
Roe party at their
conference and made
$360.00 which they
presented to the Homeless
Veterans Assistance
Foundation in Indiana. Way
to go ladies! I am sure that
will make a difference for this
foundation.

(left)Check being presented
by Denise Hagerty, Past State
President and Hope for
Hero’s Chair.

A great big shout out to California. Those members have been “couponing”. Virginia, Hope for
Hero’s Chair reported that there was over $320,000.00 of coupons sent to troops and their families
overseas to help them save some money. This is a
project that really does not cost us much and you
can make it a social event, enjoy each other, and
do a much needed project for our troops. And it
counts as philanthropic time. Virginia found a VFW
in Stockton who shipped over $100,000 of the
coupons for them at no cost….that is a great idea
to partner with our VFW and/or American Legions.
Great job California!!!!!!

I know many of you had projects and you still have
time to share your ideas with me and the
membership. I hope you will drop me a note so I can
include your event/project as helpful hints for Hope
for Hero’s that I will be sharing at the workshop at IC
in Phoenix. Hope to see many of you there.

Take care and hope to see many of you soon.

Hugs

Sr. St. Jude Chair
Celeste Webb, Illinois
[email protected]

These words by Danny
Thomas are the motto for ESA
members, I believe. We believe in helping
others, especially the kids at St. Jude. I have
seen some of your St. Jude totals on Face Book
from your state conventions. I am amazed! I
cannot wait for Phoenix to see the grand total.
You won’t want to miss it!

This year’s totals are in the books. Don’t stop working because the year has ended. Kids are still
sick and dying from cancer so we can’t stop. I have not heard from Angie Fairbanks, the St.
Jude Jr. Chair, until today when I got this e-mail:

“I'm not ignoring you all. Really, I'm not. But my chapter of 5 members
is currently in St. Jude Dream Home mode 24/7! We just had our first
weekend of open houses which saw over 1300 people in two days
(Saturday 9-5 and Sunday noon-5). Plus, we are continuing to process
tickets since we still have about 500 or so to sell. This is the first Dream
Home in our community and we are working very hard to make it
successful.”

Way to go, Angie, and your chapter, too!

Not a lot of chapters can be involved in Dream Homes or sponsor Walks to End Childhood
Cancer. I live in a city of 19,000 people. My chapter actively supports St. Jude. We had a bake
sale last weekend, we sponsored a run, and we do a wine tasting. Do we get as much credit as
a Dream Home? Nope but every dollar helps and counts in the fight. I hear the argument that
we are a small chapter. Yes, it’s harder when you are small but try something that works for your
small group. Keep working towards success.

Yesterday, I got an e-mail from Sue Krites, the Ohio state treasurer. The newly installed state
president, Amanda Rowland, has asked her to mentor the St. Jude chairs. What a great idea! If
you need help with ideas try the Inspiration Library or call me. Reach out to anyone on the IC
level and they will assist you! Sue also told me about a binder written by PICP Judy Lester and
her research co-contributors: Liz White, Virginia Clagett, Joan Bourn and Flora Burns titled
“Memories of ESA and St. Jude”. The book spans 30 years from 1972 to 2002. This might make a
good fundraiser, oh to read those memories.

13

In June 2010, just months after Cooper’s first birthday, his parents were devastated to learn he
suffered from neuroblastoma, a common solid tumor in children. Cooper was sent to St. Jude
Children’s Research Hospital for treatment, which included chemotherapy, surgery to remove
the tumor and participation in an antibody study.

At times, Cooper’s treatment was difficult, but wagon rides and games of peek-of-boo helped
him through the rough days.

Cooper finished treatment in September 2011. He’s a happy, rambunctious child who is always
on the go, whether it’s swimming, riding his bicycle or playing with his big brother. Cooper also
loves visiting the zoo. He returns to St. Jude every three months for checkups, and his latest set of
scans were clean.

This is why we work so hard, so kids like Cooper can celebrate birthdays!

Until July, carpe diem! Celeste Webb, St. Jude Sr. chair

EasterSeals Chair
Theda Hall, Arkansas

Happy Spring to all! It seemed like a long time getting here; but Spring
finally arrived, at least for a day or two in NW Arkansas. Then, it jumped
into summer with temps in the 80-90’s. Won’t complain though, as our winter was long and colder
than usual.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sandy Alexander for allowing me to be your I C
Easterseals chair. It has been a very rewarding & inspiring experience and I am looking forward
to meeting all the Easterseals chairs at convention. Thanks to all of you who have sent in your
year-end reports. I am happy to report that I have received 19 Easterseals reports. Even if you
missed the deadline, please send me you Easterseals year-end report (on page 57-58), so that
we can let everyone know how your state did this year.

The Easterseals workshop will be on Saturday, July 21 @ 1:30 pm in the Maryvale A-B room at
st
the I C Convention. It promises to be a good workshop telling us what Easterseals does in Arizona
as well as the other states. Be sure to attend and get some new ideas for Easterseals projects in
your state.

I would appreciate if all Easterseals chairs would send me, via email ([email protected]) a short
synopsis of what your state is doing for Easterseals. State Presidents, please insure that your
Easterseals chairs contact me. Jake Adams (the Phoenix Easterseals affiliate) will be telling us
what his office is doing in the Phoenix area and also an Easterseals family who will tell us how
Easterseals has impacted their lives.

Come one, come all!

See you in Phoenix!

Jennifer May-Dennis, Texas

ESA Members – We have had a great year of sharing ideas on how to
recruit new members to your chapters and celebrating those who sponsor
new members. At the 2018 Texas State Council Convention a new chapter
was chartered during the Third General Assembly. This was a very special moment, but there is
more to the story. This chapter is a great example of how we must look outside our traditional
processes and evolve to meet the needs of those who want to serve. I asked one of the Charter
Members to tell us about the new chapter.

“I, Tina Gross, have been a member of ESA for over
10 years. As my career evolved making the
monthly meetings for Zeta Tau, 50 miles away on a
Monday night, became impossible. I took a leave
of absence from Zeta Tau chapter and then went
MAL. However, I missed the fellowship of my sisters.
I started thinking about an online chapter last year.
I reached out to Melissa Valdez and together we
reached out to other members of Zeta Tau
chapter who were MAL due to responsibilities of
careers, children or inability to drive at night. After
we knew there was interest, I reached out to Julie Walker Leith and Royce Walker and asked for
their help in starting a sister chapter. Melissa and I then met with Julie and discussed format for
the meetings, scheduling of the charter and pledge ceremony.

May 20, 2018 the chapter was chartered at the Texas
State Convention, with President Linda Waters
officiating. Zeta Omicron is a sister chapter of Zeta
Tau. The chapter consists of 5 former members of Zeta
Tau who were MAL (Tina Gross, Melissa Valdez,
Rebecca Valdez, Jackie Webster and Cindy
Cavazos) and 4 new pledges (Rachel Herrera, S’vani
Herrera, Yvonne Marlow and Anh Anderson).

We don’t want to lose the history or ceremony of ESA
but we want to have less traditional meetings. We will
still include, Education, Service and Association. This
first year, educationals will be focused on learning
about ESA, the history, traditions and nonprofits we support. By meeting online there is no travel
time needed, no need for a hostess to provide snacks or dinner, and meetings can start
immediately when logging on. When the meeting is over, we are already home for the evening
and have time with our family members.

Hats off to Tina for recognizing a need and finding a creative solution to bring back members to
ESA in a format that can attract other new members. Be sure to share your ideas in our Facebook
group page

Rock star of the Month

Dixie Daly
Membership Director Sigma Rho
Tracy Swanson, Colorado Loveland, CO
[email protected]

Dixie has sponsored 4 new members
since September as well as both her
granddaughters as Elans. “I have never
experienced anything like ESA in my life. We’re THERE for
each other, 24/7. We’ve got each other’s backs and that
to me is even more rare and amazing in this day and age
than all the philanthropic and service work we do. That’s
really what the world needs more of, so I am always
doing my best to welcome awesome people to ESA
every time I can. I thank Debbie Davis, who sponsored
me 5 years ago, practically every day.

“My granddaughters the Elans are 11 and 14 and we have Deanna & Dixie
such a good time together in ESA. They even come to our
meetings sometimes just to see what we’re all about. My life motto is ‘Give
- Receive - Enjoy’ and it’s important to me to model all three of these for my
granddaughters. What better way than letting them experience those things through ESA? I
feel the thing they’ve enjoyed doing most with us, was serving at the Meals on Wheels dinner.

“My four new adult members are people I met in a wide variety of different ways but I knew each and
every one of them would become grateful receivers and givers of that ESA lightening we all share and
just SHINE with us, and they do! Two of them I met through my work at the Chamber, one a volunteer, and
both a chamber member with whom I’d collaborated many times for business stuff. The third has been a
close personal friend for years; and the fourth is a young student with whom I enjoy a special mentoring
friendship. She brings a young fresh perspective
to our chapter, and she’s bubbly and fun like
the rest of us. One, Deanna Sloat, was even my
roommate at the Colorado ESA convention in
May, fabulous fun, she LOVED it.

“I look for people who are caring, want to
grow, and manifest gratitude in life, because
that’s who we are for each other in our
chapter. I am totally confident when I invite
someone to join because I know what a
great thing I am offering. The love they’ll get
from being with us will be life changing.
Everyone needs this!”

Marlee Torres of New Mexico is
awarded the President’s
Inspirational Award for her
creative use of pull tabs for her
Installation Curtain. After her
installation, the pull tabs were
separated and sent to the Ronald

donated pull tabs from other state
members to the House which uses
the money to pay utility bills.

18

Missouri’s Inspirational Member
Recipient Marty Neuman was
recognized at the ESA Missouri State
Convention in Blue Springs, MO on
April 15, 2018 for her outstanding achievement to inspire.

President Becky Hatton stated that Marty has always been willing to step up and fill any position
(EXCEPT Vice-President or President)! She attends all State, MARC and IC Conventions and is
often the only one from her chapter to do so.
She can always be counted on to assist in any way. During her ESA tenure Marty has sponsored
eight new members. When IC President Vicky Jones introduced the literacy program in 2013-14,
Marty and her chapter decided to tutor students in need. She continues to volunteer in that
capacity today!

Missouri, Maureen Wells.

19

Debbie Willoughby was recognized at the ESA North Carolina
State Convention in Oak Island, NC on April 28, 2018 for her
outstanding achievement to inspire.

President Mary Smith stated that Debbie has done an
outstanding job as their newsletter editor and has agreed to
continue filling that position. This 30 year member has served
as State President twice, as well as several SERC and IC
positions. She and Sharon Long chartered the Kappa Nu

chapter.

Here are just a few of the
notes that Sharon Long
shared about Debbie:
Debbie is motivated,
resourceful and determined.
She plays the piano and the
violin.
Besides being an outstanding
newsletter editor, she is an
ever ready photographer
that keeps the history of NC
ESA.

Debbie has participated in
an annual mission trip to
Thailand with members of her
church to share her faith with
children in need of spiritual
guidance.

She is able to draw out the best in you and puts the shy at ease.
She seeks out ways to serve others, such as involving co-workers in
Hope for Heroes events.

Debbie is humble in all that she does.

Debbie Willoughby holding her Certificate of Appreciation
presented by IC Representative to North Carolina, Maureen Wells.

The green makeup on Maureen’s face was a remnant of her role as
the Wicked Witch of the West for newly installed NC President Lauren
Ryan.

20

Utah’s Inspirational Member Recipient
Phyllis Davis was recognized at the
ESA Utah State Convention in Ogden,
UT on May 19, 2018 for her outstanding
achievement to inspire.

President Carol Priest stated that if you want or need someone to do
something, ask a busy lady and this ESA member is a busy lady! She is willing to do anything that
needs to be done with a “Can Do” attitude.

Phyllis was pledged in 1988 and in 1998 she went inactive to raise her family and teach school.
In 2013, her family was raised and following her retirement, she again
joined her ESA family. She turned in her school shoes and put on her
running shoes. Along with everything else she does, she babysits her
granddaughter and quilts
and quilts and quilts some more!

She attends most of the other Chapter’s events, even if it means traveling more than 200 miles.
Phyllis has attended several IC Conventions and joined her Rocky Mountain sisters at our annual
Regional Round Ups.

She has been the State Convention Chairman twice, which is no easy task. Phyllis has served as
Chapter President, Utah State Council’s Historian, Second Vice President, First Vice President and
next year, as State President, she will hold the keys to the ESA golden treasure chest.

21

Erin Bake from Alpha Theta Chapter is a go
getter. She is currently serving as chapter
president, was the previous St Jude state
coordinator and was also installed as the
Kentucky State Council recording
secretary. She came to Alpha Theta as a
collegiate member and has embraced
the community chapter.

Cheryl de la Ranko (left) received
the special IC award for Texas. She is
a very special member. Chery also
served as the TESAN Newsletter Editor
this year.

Sally Bowler is a member
of Sigma Phi. She found
the friends and activities
of ESA are an incentive for
her to return into society.
She stated that she was
becoming a hermit after
suffering the loss of her
husband. Sally said that she
has “found reason for service and
friends.”

Leslie Farabee received the
Oklahoma President’s inspiration
award from incoming 2018-2019
International President Kim Kummer.
Kim stated, “Leslie was a breath of
fresh air all weekend. With a smile,
hug, encouraging word or running to
get what anyone needed.”

For those states that have not sent
their President’s Inspirational Award
recipients to the News Bulletin,
please do so for the July issue.
These remarkable and inspiring
individuals deserve to be
recognized.
