My childhood memories
Every people have their own memories. Some people think that they do not have sweet
childhood memories, but little did they do know that memories can have meaningful lessons
that make them grateful later. Children do not know how to value memories are, but they
enjoyed their time being children. One day, as they get older, they will miss those memories.
Ellen Glasgow once said “ the older I grow, the more earnestly I feel that the few joys of
childhood are the best that life has to give”
My childhood memories are about my old best friend, Munirah. It was 13 years ago when
I was 5 years old. I live in a small town surrounded by hills named Paloh, Gua Musang. Every
time I see the hills, it makes me remember my childhood hometown. The town was small that
only have a police station, schools, homes and a few shops. As both of our parents was
teacher, I lived at the teacher’s quarters.
When I back from school at 12 p.m, I will go to my parent’s school. Munirah’s parents are
also teachers. As our parents still had work to do, Munirah and I played together around the
school. I don’t have any other friends except her. Both of us played hide and seek, hopscotch
and so on.
One day, both of our parents had a meeting. They forgot to take us at the kindergarten.
So, Munirah and I decided to go home on foot. As Paloh has a lot of bushes, we need to be
careful. Our home only took 5 minutes from kindergarten. On the way back home, we stopped
at the goat shed. The goat shed belongs to Uncle Amran that was my father’s friend. The
goat’s smell was very stinky. I was still a child at that time. I still remember vividly when
Munirah and I touched the goat dung because we think it was cute. As we arrived at our
parent’s school, both of our mothers were shocked because saw mud at our shoes. But they
just shut up because maybe they think that it was their fault.
Munirah is the caring and sweetest person. The other day, we played cooking together in
the evening. We picked the banana leaf to wrap up the sand that replaces the rice. When
Munirah and I were busy picking the leaf, I fell on the harsh sand. “ Syasyaaaa!! “, I still
remember clearly how shocked Munirah was at that time. Both of us worried that our parents
scolded us later. Munirah quickly took the leaf and wrapped my knee. She washed the wound
to make sure it will not bleed anymore. How scared both of us that time. But, by having Munirah
with me, I felt not panic anymore.
Munirah holds me on the way back home. She cares about me at that time. Even I was
still a child, but she took care of me in a mature way. She knew how to stop bleeding and let
my wound dry first before she wrapped the wound. Both of us laughed because we thought
that our mothers will scold us at that time but our mothers just took a long breath. Maybe they
knew how stubborn we were.
When my family went out for dinner, my father told us that they got a chance to go to a
better school. I was crying immediately at that time in the restaurant. I cannot believe that I
will leave her soon. My mother said that I can find another friend at the new school. But little
did they know how I felt because Munirah is a special friend to me. I just felt sad the entire
night and I know this is the end of our friendship.
At the kindergarten, I told Munirah about it. I felt guilty at first but Munirah was so
supportive because she said I can get a new friend at the new school. Munirah and I went
eating together and studying together as it was my last day at the kindergarten. I still keep the
note that Munirah gave me at the end of the day. She wrote, “ syasya and Munirah, forever
together “.
It was the last day I was at Paloh. I visited Munirah at her home. Both of us hugged and
cried. Munirah always said “ it’s okay “ to me. It was the last time I saw her. When I entered
my new class, I felt so strange because I cannot find the same Munirah at that school. It took
a week for me to get used to the new environment. Now, both of us had dreams to achieve
and became successful people. After 5 years, I visited Paloh again. There is so much
difference. The town is more advanced than before. I felt sad because Munirah was move a
year after me. Septimus (2021) said part of growing up is understanding friendships come to
an end naturally sometimes. It’s never personal or ‘beef’, we just outgrew each other.
