Medium Route

Distance from Gondopurowangi to Bigaran
village: 3.3 km
ETA: 1-1.5 hours

This route traces along the Gondopurowangi hills
in Kenalan Village to Bigaran Village. Gondopurowangi
Hill can be reached in approximately 30 minutes to the
north using a jeep from the Borobudur Temple area to
Balkondes of Kenalan Village. Access to the main road
leading to post 1 to the entrance to Gondopurowangi Hill
can be easily passed by jeeps and motorbikes because
it is either asphalt or paved.

Tourists can directly do trekking from the
entrance to the Gondopurowangi hill towards
Bigaran Village. The estimated time needed is
around 1-1.5 hours to go to Balkondes of Bigaran
Village. Access along the trekking route is in the
form of cast block roads that go down hills and are
slightly winding, where tourists will often meet local
residents because these two points are in the middle
of residential areas. Heading to the Bigaran Village
area, tourists will be invited to visit several cocoa
plantations managed by the local community for
a variety of chocolate products, one of which is a
chocolate drink that can be enjoyed while relaxing.

Borobudur Trail of Civilization 101

Route Description

Short Route

Distance from Giri Purno Village to Ngadiharjo village: 2.8 km
ETA: 1 hour

Giripurno Village is about 8 km from the Borobudur Temple area and has
Menoreh hills in the background. In addition to the natural potential which is rich in
local biodiversity, there is a waterfall with a height of approximately 100 meters which is
located in the middle of the hills of Giripurno Village. There is also the Mongkrong peak
with unspoiled conditions, where tourists can see beautiful views of the Borobudur
Temple area, complemented by natural panoramas and expanses of rice fields and
sun rays, especially in the morning. The main road access to Giripurno Village can be
passed by cars or motorcycles because it is a cast block and is relatively wide.

The village of Giripurno keeps the legend of Prince Diponegoro who, according
to local beliefs, once stopped at the village of Giripurno and left a small shrine called
Sendang Sebandot. Apart from the legend about Prince Diponegoro, the people of
Giripurno Village also have stories about Sunan Kalijaga who once stopped at the
same place. At that time Sunan Kalijaga was about to pray, but because there was no
water, he performed tayammum.

When performing tayammum and prayer services, the wooden stick held by
Sunan Kalijaga was stuck into the ground. After Sunan Kalijaga finished his prayer
and prepared to leave the location, he pulled his stick and a spring appeared from
the place where his stick had stuck. The sprouts of water resemble the "urine" of a
Bandot goat, and from that day the spring is known as Sendang Sebandot.

In the village of Giripurno, the main road access that will be passed by tourists
for trekking is mostly in the form of block-cast roads that cross residents' settlements.
Tourists can cross clove plantations which are characteristic of the vegetation in
Giripurno village. The journey continues by visiting the Balkondes of Giripurno Village to
enjoy local products, namely Etawa goat milk. Tourists will be picked up to Ngadiharjo
Village by car/other motorized vehicle which is the end point of the short route offered
in the Flora's Tropical Wonderland theme and enjoy the typical dishes of Ngadiharjo
Village in the form of Enthok noodles and Wresah Coffee.

Location

Sambeng village, Ngargogondo village
Sambeng Village has a backdrop of the Menorah hills, 6 km from the Borobudur
Temple complex and is located right on the banks of the Progo River. It has the
potential to be developed as tourist attractions for fishermen without boats, with prior
preparations and assistance from Borobudur Conservation Center. The location for
the stone carvings in Balkondes Ngargogondo was chosen not only because of the
village's connection with the stone trails, but because there are also many local people
there who work as stone carvers.
Both villages have easy access to the main road and are equipped with public facilities
such as parking lots, places of worship, and adequate toilets.

Activities

The main attraction in the activity
design on Journey of the Stones is to
invite tourists to retrace the journey
of andesite rocks which were
transported using bamboo gethek.
The activity begins in the morning
by telling about the construction
and journey of andesite rock as
raw material for the construction of
Borobudur Temple.

Storytellers can enrich the story by telling the names of several villages that are thought
to have a historical connection with the journey of the andesite rocks. So as to provide a
narrative about the traditions and culture of the surrounding village community who make
a living by catching fish in the river and carrying out transactions to fulfill their needs by
exchanging (bartering).

110 Borobudur Trail of Civilization

Tourists can directly experience what it feels
like riding a gethek (raft) and fishing in the
river area, accompanied by an activity guide
and Javanese singer for immersion in typical
rural Java. Each gethek can accommodate
5-6 tourists. While tourists enjoy their time
and carrying out activities on the gethek, local
specialties will be served on board, delivered
by another, smaller gethek by the local tour
operator.
Fish caught by tourists can be processed
directly in the kitchen by local residents
for lunch, while tourists clean themselves
and change their clothes. Enjoying lunch
on the banks of the river may create a more
memorable visit experience.

Activities

In the next activity, tourists are invited to visit
Ngargogondo Village and take part in the next
attraction, namely carving stones and/or printing
a replica of the temple reliefs accompanied by a
local stone carving instructor. The results of these
sculptures and/or relief replica prints can be brought
home as a souvenir.

Although the strains are not

heard, the carvings of musical

instruments have voiced the story

of the art of music as one of the

cultural elements of the Javanese

people at that time when the

Borobudur Temple was built. Some

of the relief panels are identified as 4

(four) types of musical instruments,

namely idiophones (knocks and

rattles), membraphones (drums,

Interpretation of percussion instruments contained in the kentan), chardophones (string/

Development
of BToC Interpretation

Borobudur Trail of Civilization 127

128 Borobudur Trail of Civilization

Development

Personal Interpretation

Interpretation is a combination of efforts to improve the quality of tourism and
strategic communication for the development of tourism products in a destination.
Interpretation is an important element in encouraging participatory experiences and
activities for tourists to dissolve and engage in narratives and create memorable travel
trips.

Interpretation is part of promotion, marketing and branding (imaging) which aims
to increase memories, impressions, strengthen the product image of cultural tourism
travel patterns at DSP Borobudur entitled Ancient Kingdom: Borobudur Trail of
Civilization, and also the desire to return. Interpretation development is divided into two
complementary categories in the form of; personal and non-personal interpretation.

Personal interpretation is an interpretation that is interactive and delivered by
an individual who is generally a profession such as a tour/activity guide and/or a
storyteller. Personal interpretation by presenting general BToC information and its 9
sub-themes can be attached to a storyteller & tour/activity guide on duty at the Tourist
Information Center (TIC) of the Borobudur Temple area or to storytellers at related
museums located in zones 1 & 2 of the Borobudur Temple areas.

The packaging of BToC's thematic travel patterns is structured to provide added
value by focusing on narrative storytelling and relief interpretation on each theme.
With the development of story-based tourism products, it is expected to be able to
stimulate the tourist experience so that they can form a deeper impression on their
visit to the Borobudur Temple area.

Therefore, the presence of a storyteller and activity guide with a straightforward
and expressive storytelling style is a must. In the future, in an effort to support the
development of sustainable and inclusive tourism products, personal interpretation is
designed by presenting storytellers in multiple languages: verbally speaking Indonesian,
English and other foreign languages as well as storytellers in sign language.

Borobudur Trail of Civilization 129

Development

Non-Personal Interpretation

The development of long-term non-personal interpretation of each BToC sub-
theme includes the production of audiovisual content in the form of augmented
reality and virtual reality as in themes that can be developed in the future with various
extensions, for example archeoastronomical interpretation and expansion of the
meaning of non-personal interpretation by strengthening images through the creation
of landmarks as symbols and the representation of each narrative attached to the
theme.

The plan for the development of medium interpretation on the 9 (nine) sub-
themes of BToC includes: planning a variety of thematic interpretation media and
memorabilia aimed at strengthening storytelling.

01 WALUKU:
CULTIVATING CIVILIZATI0N

The development of the interpretation in the theme Waluku: Cultivating
Civilization includes the expansion of the interpretation of cultivation in the Borobudur
area to create a unique location as a place for knowledge related to local culture and
agriculture. The development of Waluku interpretation medium in the future can be
added through the presence of fruit, vegetable, sweet potato and herb plantations
and nurseries which have been part of the civilization of the Borobudur Area since
long ago. This can also be supported by a culinary arena that serves traditional and
organic dishes from the local area.

This type of traditional cuisine can be developed from the culture of the ancient
Javanese people, especially around the ancient Mataram Kingdom which can be
reconstructed and become a supporting attraction for BToC with the theme Waluku:
Cultivating Civilization.

Body and Soul interpretation includes the creation of traditional health
interpretations in the Borobudur area. What can be developed in this travel thematic
is the expansion of physical and mental balance activities that can be explored for
various ages and tourist cultures. Physical/fitness activity can be varied by combining
various sports activities of interest; by previously ensuring it has roots in or is aligned
with the values and narratives of Borobudur.

Jemparingan is a type of sport that has also been widely practiced in the
Borobudur Temple area, and also pencak silat which is part of the physical and
wellness activities found in the reliefs of the temple.

Interpretation is developed through the narration of the history of pottery which
is rooted in the Borobudur area, thereby creating an educational arena center for
pottery crafts. The development of Skilled Hands interpretation in the future can be
added to that of batik products using natural dyes.

Activities in this theme can develop into an educational area for pottery with
typical Borobudur motifs / patterns as well as innovations in natural-colored batik
fashion that reinforces the narrative of Borobudur. Batik innovation, for example, tells
the narrative of Borobudur on a scarf, such as on a comic strip.

introductions to kindness and introductions to tame livestock in the Borobudur area,
such as providing a petting zone area for goats and rabbits, as well as an edutainment
area for children.

The dominance of storytelling activities in this theme is fable narratives which
can be developed with technological mediums such as narratives with virtual reality
and the creation of augmented reality games around thematic locations. In addition,
outdoor stage facilities can also be built and ready to stage a performance at any time.
