“We have only one passion, the rise of Great Nation”

Foreword

NIRMAAN VIDYA HELPLINE’S APPEAL TO THE STUDENTS

Nirmaan Organization is a not-for-profit organization started by a group of BITS-Pilani University students in
2005 with a passion to make India a developed Nation. Vidya Helpline is one of the flagship projects of Nir-
maan started in 2010 with a focus on career guidance to the students and dropouts. The project is first of its
kind in our Country and has been life changing for thousands of students across several states.

We are here to help you become successful and happier in your life by guiding you to realize in what you are
really good at and help you to take up appropriate careers. In this context I would like to share the Success
mantra for your career and life in four simple steps.

1. Identify your interest and choose a career in the area of your liking. All major achievers in the world
are those who have very keen interest in what they do and made their career as their life. Let
the motto of your education be “Education is for increased quality of your life but not just for higher
earnings”.

2. Choose a (or a few) role model, preferably an achiever in the career you choose, and know more
about them, understand their characteristics, their life journeys etc.,

3. DREAM BIG in whatever you choose and give your best shot. If you choose to become a doctor
aspire to give the best treatment to your patients, if you want to become a civil engineer, aspire
to construct a bridge which can be effectively used by a few generations of people, if you choose
to become a chef, aspire to cook the best food to the customers in the entire world.

4. Continuous Hard work. There is no replacement for it but success is guaranteed. I repeat success is
guaranteed.

The current magazine is a wonderful compilation of important aspects about several careers from major
streams such as Finance, Engineering, Management, Fashion Technology, Agriculture, Pharmacy, Overseas
education, Civil services, etc., This magazine also has a few exercises on exploring oneself, career puzzles,
important colleges, scholarships, articles from renowned people etc., I can surely say that this magazine, if
used to its entirety, can help you lay a clear career path for yourself.

We wish all the students and their parents, teachers use this booklet to increase their career awareness
and take a vital step of choosing appropriate career with complete and authentic information. We also wish
you become what you aspire to and contribute not only in your family growth, but also in re-building our
glorious India. Keep dreaming BIG!!! No looking back. Forward!!! Forward!!! Forward!!!

We have only one passion, the rise of a great Nation.

JAI Hind!!!

How should I choose My Career?

(The PanchaMantra of Ideal Career)

One of the most crucial decisions in any students’ life is “Which career should I choose?”, as it determines
the entire course of one’s career and life. However, unfortunately most of the students are taking decisions
without much awareness leading to lesser performance in their careers, resulting to stress and anxiety. So it
is extremely important to take up the most appropriate career that suits YOU. To help you take a right career
choice Vidya HelpLine has developed the “PanchaMantra of Career” – the 5 vital aspects of a career. They
are:
1. Interest – Interest is the most important aspect while choosing a career. You should identify what you
are passionate about, what kind of activities excites you in your day to day life and then make a career
choice which suits that. When we love what we are doing, we will always put our best performance forward
and strive to learn more. Consequently, that will enhance your self-confidence & job satisfaction too. You
would be working with PLEASURE but not with PRESSURE.

2. Aptitude – It is the natural talent or an ability the individual has acquired / can easily acquire, through
life experience, study or training. Some of us are good at speaking while some may be good with numbers,
while some others on imagination. It is very individual specific and it is very vital to know our aptitude on vari-
ous areas such as Verbal, Numerical, Reasoning, Spatial etc., and choose a career which suits your aptitude.

3. Personality – Along with interest and aptitude it is crucial to understand our natural nature (personal
traits & characteristics) so that our personality would be conducive to the work environment, life style & the
situations that arise in a particular profession.

For instance, if you have great liking (Interest) to be a teacher and have excellent verbal skills (Aptitude) but
you are extremely short tempered and don’t enjoy being with people (Personality), Can you become a good
teacher? Alternatively, if you are very pleasant and enjoy being with people, you could become a great
teacher as you have Interest, Aptitude and suitable Personality.

4. Practical Applicability – There are certain practical aspects in everyone’s life which should be consid-
ered while choosing a career to avoid untoward challenges further and be more realistic in career planning.
Some of them include:
• Economic status (Fees & allied expenses, No. of years for employment, Scholarships Availability)
• Location of Higher Study / Job (Willingness to relocate to a different Country, State or city)
• Academic performance
• Reservation Status

5. Opportunities – The last but another important aspect is to understand the employment /self-employ-
ment opportunities, the industries or sectors which grow and which diminish over a period of time. With the
advancement of technology and many innovations coming in various fields, the careers which are present to-
day may become irrelevant tomorrow, careers which do not have much requirement today may turn to high
demand careers. Further, many new kind of jobs may emerge depending upon the changing lifestyles and
new innovations. Taking all these things into consideration we will have to gauge the opportunities for the lists
of careers in which we are interested. We can gather this information by discussing with people from various
domains, talking to counsellors and by reading articles in newspapers, internet etc.,

Once you make a decision on choosing a career for you, identify your long-term and short-term goals and
draft an action plan and take it forward. As the preparation to launch a rocket is very high but once launched
the rocket knows no other direction than moving forward so is identifying the career, but once you firm up
your goal, only way is moving forward with greater intensity.

This Career Digest has activities to identify your interest, your personality and has information on various Ca-
reers. You could utilize this information and lay your career road map. You could also take up a more detailed
psychometric assessment, followed by Personal counseling by our Career Counselors for effective Career
Planning.

The Future
of Jobs in India

As the human intellectual evolution go to new horizons, the number of jobs and the nature of the jobs
have been constantly changing and it becomes extremely crucial for us to understand the scope near
future. The two key factors that challenge the nation today are, firstly, there are about 1.7 Crore new
people entering into the workforce year on year whereas there are only 55 Lakh jobs created; and
Secondly, the speed and scale at which the disruptions are occurring will continue at the same or faster
pace, impacting the way we work and live. Today the statement 'change is the only constant' holds true
as never as change is accelerating.

The Future Jobs in India for next decade will be determined by 3 primary forces-

Globalization:
1.It is the process by which the world is becoming increasingly interconnected as a result of massively
increased trade and cultural exchange among various countries in the world. Globalization has increased
the production of goods and services, freer movement of capital, goods, and services.

Demographic Changes:
1.Demographic means Socio-economic characteristics of a country such as age, sex, education
level, income level, marital status, occupation etc., As the demographic changes, the requirements
of the people change accordingly. For example, currently as India's majority population is Youth,
there are more companies / industries focusing on the products/services for youth. If this shifts
from youth to middle aged, the nature of requirements of people changes and the services /
products also change accordingly.

Adoption of Exponential Technologies:
1.There are many new technologies which are coming into the market at a very rapid pace. As our
companies adopt these technologies, the nature of work of our people and the number of jobs are
going to change drastically.

These primary forces will have a significant impact on jobs in the next 10 years. Because of
these key changes, there are three important scenarios to the jobs.

New jobs would be created:
1.for instance, in a few companies the work which was being done by the Labor would be replaced
by the automated machines or robots. So, making of robots and maintenance / operating of the
robots would be some of the new jobs that would be created.

29

A section of jobs will require significantly new skill sets:
1.For instance, a few decades ago all the accounting jobs were done manually in books. Today,
most of the accounting job are performed in computer using various softwares. The accountant
needs to up skill themselves continuously to meet the job needs.

A set of jobs that may reduce / cease to exist:
For instance, currently we have Cashiers in the banks giving the amount from our accounts upon our
request. After the ATMs have become operational, the Cashier jobs have reduced, further there are
lot of digital transactions happening today which would increase even more in the coming years,
making the career “Cashier in Bank” extinct or reduce significantly.

Above picture shows the scenario of nature of jobs in our Country by 2022.
So, it is very important for us to understand “New Age Careers” that have high growth potential and
preferably make career choices from those industries which are going to grow and which also match to
your interest, personality and aptitude.
