CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1. 1. RESEARCH BACKGROUND The archipelago is the largest archipelago in the world. The countries found in this archipelago area are like Brunei, Filipina, Indonesia, Malaysia (Malaysia Timur), Papua New Guinea, Singapura, dan Timor Lester. The influence of the archipelago in the culture of the Malay community in the past is spread through geographical location. For example, the position of each region in the archipelago is close to each other, so the influence is easily spread. In addition, the existence of intermarriage between regional immigrants and local residents. Therefore, art, customs, and tribal culture exist as a result of the presence of these components. However, not everyone is aware of this Malay culture. This is due to how quickly the times are changing. Social media, video platforms, and digital content increase the likelihood that teenagers will be exposed to global culture. This is known as social media and Global Culture, or Exposure to Global Culture. This may lead them to pay less attention to Malay customs and local values and more attention to global trends. In general, children and teenagers' use of electronics rose by 17% between 2019 and 2021, according to Common-sense Media research.

Additionally, two global lifestyle influences include consumerism and global fashion trends. Globalisation combines lifestyles and fashion trends from throughout the globe. Adolescents may disregard or have less interest in traditional Malay jewellery or attire in favour of worldwide trends and brands. International businesses are frequently introduced to teenagers through social media, online influencers, and ads. These brands frequently have a universally appealing aesthetic, which draws young people to them instead of more conventional apparel. affiliation with prestige and modernity. International jewellery and apparel are frequently linked to a modern, highstatus image. Compared to traditional attire, teenagers might view it as a higher social status symbol. Electronic and Digital Activities Teenagers may become less interested in conventional activities or festivities and more focused on digital ones if they lead an intensely digital lifestyle, which includes using cellphones and playing video games. Generation Z is the gaming-loving generation. Gamers make about 81% of Generation Z. Approximately 71% of millennials, 60% of Gen X, and 42% of baby boomers make up this group. It is true that, regardless of age, all generations today play video games. This occurs as a result of inadequate parental monitoring and a lack of exposure appropriate for their age. Therefore, if the present generation is not exposed to Malay customs, they would eventually disappear.

1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT 1.2.1. Malay traditions are being forgotten more frequently. Globalization and the speed of modernization have changed values and lifestyles. People may have a propensity to minimize or neglect traditional rituals in favor of more modern activities when they embrace a more global culture. Furthermore, it is clear that modern technology is being used in a number of industries, such as communication, manufacturing, and education. Traditional techniques may be replaced or eclipsed by modern approaches and technologies, which has ramifications for them. As per the declaration provided by Astro Awani In this country, up to 60.9 percent of Generation Z (Gen Z) prefers to communicate with their teachers virtually via social media platform Furthermore, the media has a significant impact on how people perceive culture. A declining appreciation of ancient practices may result from the mainstream media's tendency to promote a more modern or international lifestyle. Nowadays, about 90% of Malaysians use social media on a daily basis. Because of that, not all Influencers able to utilize this social media to promote or show about ancient Malay practices.ms.

1.3 OBJECTIVE. The aim of this Seri Banian documentary to dispel concerns that Malay traditions are being forgotten is likely to focus on the preservation, promotion, and revival of these cultural practices the research develops its objectives, and they are as follows: • To grow the business so that it serves as an inspiration to foreigners about Malay traditions and customs of the past. • The community can experience a unique atmosphere, rather a 'transformation' to become a member of the population through various activities based on the Malay way of life. • Everyone can try the cuisine and learn how it was traditionally made. Furthermore, the community can learn about how the community eats as well as the eating equipment. 1.4. RESEARCH QUESTION In order to achieve the research goals, the research will begin with finding the answers to the research questions. The research questions were formulated in to achieve the research objectives. • Research Question 1: How to introduce Malay customs that are increasingly being forgotten among teenagers? A way to ensure that teenagers do not forget Malay customs by making a documentary video. With this video they can see and have the nature of wanting to feel the atmosphere of Malay customs in the past. ⚫ Research Question 2: What will happen if Malay customs are replaced by other customs? The next generation will not be able to experience the atmosphere and the way they eat or defend themselves. Not only that, it will also affect the tourism economy because not all tourists can experience this Mala

1.5. HYPOTHESIS Hypothesis 1- Exposure to documentaries about Malay customs in Malaysia will increase the youth's knowledge and understanding of Malay cultural heritage Hypothesis 2- This project will inspire youth to actively participate and revive certain cultural practices that may be fading away. 1.6. SCOPE The aim of this study is to explore and create different methods to increase awareness of Malay culture among Malaysians and a larger international audience. The study participants were between 13 and 40 years old. Every state in Malaysia is the site of this investigation. To take into account recent changes in perspectives and cultural norms, the study period will cover the last six months. This study will use qualitative and quantitative methods, including surveys and interviews, to find out more about the community's perception of this Malay custom, including its use and the potential impact of psychological and external trends on the belief that it is irrelevant and outdated. 1.7. LIMITATION A few of the challenges are Limited Access to Location is one of the challenges that needs to be solved. Traditional Malay sites are often located in remote areas, making them difficult to access by public transport. Not only that, but it is difficult to wait there until night because of the narrow path and trees on both sides. In addition, the project was challenging due to the lack of equipment. Therefore, to ensure this project is completed, the chosen alternative is to borrow tools such as cameras. Another risk is operating the camera in erratic weather conditions that could result in damage. Furthermore, it was challenging to interact with the staff there. This is a result of the workers' contempt for the project. And last, money problems. This is a result of the fact that I am not compensated by the store to review the meal. I must so use my own funds.

CHAPTER TWO LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1. INTRODUCTION The archipelago is the largest archipelago in the world. Hence, the village of Banian exists. This hamlet was constructed to preserve the art, traditions, and culture of former tribes that can be claimed to be going extinct over time, including the Javanese, Banjar, Bugis, Aceh, Minangkabau, and others. In a world that is changing quickly and where modernity frequently triumphs over tradition, we set out to investigate the moving story of how Malay practices are vanishing from memory. Generations are stuck between the embrace of progress and the risk of losing priceless legacy as the winds of change blow across the cultural landscape. In order to shed light on the norms and practices that have molded communities for generations, my documentary seeks to untangle the many threads that make up the beautiful tapestry of Malay culture.

2.1.1 STATE OF THE ART Aravind Kumar Rai November 22, 2019 A documentary film for the preservation of Ilocano culture The Ilocos Province of the Philippines is a unique place where its vast and rich history and its diverse population come together in a spectacular display of culture, both tangible and intangible. culture. This study aims to explore the preservation of Ilokano culture. Specifically, it seeks to see how Ilokano culture is manifested through traditional games, food (chichacorn, empanada and calamay) and traditional crafts (inabel and burnay), traditions in marriage, death and celebration, and tourism (Paoay Church and Calle Crisologo), and how the Ilokano people see the need to preserve their culture. Data Collection This study uses a qualitative research design, and has been conducted through narrative interviews and unobtrusive observation from key informants (KI). Data Analysis Purposive sampling was done to identify KIs to be interviewed. An interview with each of the KIs approximately lasted for two (2) hours, and were recorded in audio formats. The interviews were then transcribed and analyzed through coding. A category is devised to enable the researcher to define and explain the underlying meaning of these elements. The term, from its first notions, has been related to the authentic, the indigenous, the rural, etc., which does not differ from the current conception in the professional and academic context. Nevertheless, these constructions entail a much more complex universe, where the relations of the users with the space, the lifestyle activities and the transition through generations play a big role. The research process of this research project implemented an innovative multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary methodology with the main objective of identifying, cataloging, characterizing and ultimately preserving and reappraising the vernacular heritage of Michoacan. The interdisciplinary approach of the project allowed it to address multiple areas of the vernacular architecture, from the architectural and typological analysis, the morphologies, spatiality and materials to the environmental and vulnerability studies. On the other hand, the realization of an audiovisual project which documents and transmits the wealthy knowledge and culture of the communities functions as a more direct format to reappraise cultural heritage and communicate science.

Next About Subtitle Translation of Chinese Documentary Seasons from the Perspective of Scopos Theory Chinese Documentary Seasons. As a country with a history of 5,000 years, traditional Chinese culture is the most profound cultural soft power in the country. In recent years, with China's growing influence, Chinese culture has attracted more and more attention around the world. Chinese publicity documentaries are on a mission to tell China's story to the world, spread Chinese traditional culture and promote cultural exchange between countries. A paper on the translation analysis of Seasons of China documentary subtitles from the perspective of Skopos Theory. With 24 traditional solar terms at its core, this cultural documentary presents the vast and profound Chinese culture to domestic and foreign audiences in its unique way. SkoposTheory shows that the purpose of translation depends on the cultural background of target language users and their needs for translation, and determines specific translation strategies and methods. In addition, the success of this documentary genre cannot be measured with traditional standards. Typically, i-docs have a small audience but this does not mean they have less impact. Their success lies on the fact that they gather relevant audiences, with specific interest in the story rather than random, mass audiences. The sustainability of digital storytelling relies heavily on this parameter. Thus, it is very important when we develop digital storytelling to exactly know the audience we are addressing and where to find it. This gives the documentary filmmaker the opportunity to deal in depth with very

specialized topics and approach fragmented audiences that mass media fail to allure. Furthermore,Overall, while document analysis gave the researcher access to data that would otherwise take enormous time and financial resources to collect, its main disadvantage was working with limited data [73], as credible electronic data sources on specific topics (for example, on the history of some beef-related cuisine) were not available. Being an educational In the future, triangulation with primary data would be required to develop a deeper understanding of the topic. Besides, these logical solutions of the vernacular architecture must be taken into account in future strategies to preserve this heritage, as a good understanding and technical knowledge will be useful for restoration and conservation projects. On the other hand, the information gathered could be used for the cataloguing of these techniques and typologies, and has an inestimable value at the time to document and analyze this heritage at risk.In general, the situation of the vernacular architecture of Michoacan is very similar to that of other study cases all over the world, presenting constructive modifications and decay processes on account of the industrialization and globalization of the building industry.

CHAPTER THREE RESEARCH METHODOLOGY In this chapter, I discuss the research design, area of study, population, sample of the population, sampling technique, instrument for data collection, validation of the questionnaire, administration of the instrument and method of data analysis. 3.1. RESEARCH DESIGN I chose a survey research design because it best served to answer the questions and the purposes of the study. The survey research is one in which a group of people or items is studied by collecting and analyzing data from only a few people or items considered to be representative of the entire group. 3.2. AREA OF STUDY The purpose of this survey is to determine the percentage of teenagers and the community who do not know Malay customs and to determine who the target audience of the project is. To find out more about Malay customs, their knowledge, and whether teenagers still know them or not, a Google form has been created. In order to gather thoughts and preferences about historic Malay customs, I also conducted an online survey. This can help modern youth to identify the historical Malay customs. The main purpose is to measure the awareness and habits of teenagers towards Malay customs. Understanding the extent to which traditional Malay customs are still practiced by today's youth requires knowledge of this information.

3.3. POPULATION OF STUDY According to survey results, the target population is made up of people from different age groups. In particular, 83.6% of the respondents are between the ages of 18 and 25, while 10.9% are between the ages of 26 and 35. Figure 1 : Age Of Respondents This information is important because it shows how the youth's awareness of old Malay customs and how they react to modern society at a certain age range are both evident in this section. Figure 1: Age of respondent

3.4. SAMPLE OF POPULATION Recently, thoughts and insights on certain topics have been collected through Google form surveys. An Internet-based platform was used to administer the survey. The background of the respondents was diverse, including various age groups, genders, and education levels. With painstaking efforts, survey questions were created to get certain facts and views on the matter. The main conclusions of the survey are then emphasized in a comprehensive report that is made after the data has been collected, examined and presented. Decision-making and strategic planning can be aided by survey results, which offer insightful information about the target population's views and opinions about old Malay customs. Figure 2 : Survey About Banian Series There were 55 responders in the study's sample, which consisted of both students and members of the general public.

3.5. SAMPLING TECHNIQUE Google forms were used to conduct research studies, and they were disseminated through Instagram and WhatsApp among other social media platforms. This allows the google form to be wider for the public to give their opinions and ensure that the data collected reflects various points of view. Researchers can collect data more quickly and effectively from a larger and more diverse sample of respondents by using social media and online sources. To analyze survey data, random sampling has been used to conveniently select a subset of people from the wider population with the same probability of selection. This technique can help in ensuring that the data collected can be used as a reference to the public and that the sample is representative of the population. Data collected by the researcher can properly provide the perspective and experience of the population being studied. 3.6. INSTRUMENT FOR DATA COLLECTION A survey was conducted using about Malay customs that are being lost by the youth was collected through a questionnaire. The respondent's age, gender and educational attainment are among the generic questions in one part of the questionnaire. The questionnaire section included general questions about the respondents, such as their age, gender, and level of education. Then he focused on opening a restaurant that applied traditional Malay customs. This part of the questionnaire asks about the respondents' familiarity with past Malay practices, their feelings about the cultural atmosphere, and their opinions about customs. The purpose of the questions is to determine any knowledge gaps or misunderstandings by assessing their level of experience and knowledge. The questionnaire is composed of one section.the first seven questions ask about the respondent's personal information.the remaining ten questions concern their knowledge and experience of Malay customs. To make answering the questionnaire easier for respondents, questions are asked with a yes/no format .

3.7. DATA ANALYSIS The data that was collected from the field was examined. The instrument's response options are weighted as indicated below. Figure 3: Part of Survey Question 1 Have you ever heard the name of Seri Banian village restaurant? Figure 4: Question 1 From the chart above, we can see that the majority of the community, consisting of 94.5%, do not know about the existence of the restaurant. This shows that there are still many teenagers and people who have not experienced the way of life of the previous Malay society. A small part, representing 5.5%, showed that they had experienced the atmosphere of Malay customs before. This shows that the youth and the community outside lack awareness and no longer recognize this Malay custom.

Question 2 Do you know what kampung Seri Banian means? Figure 5: Question 2 In this question, we decided to ask if the respondents had heard the name of this classic restaurant. Based on the chart, the conclusion was that the majority of the community, specifically 96.5%, had not heard the classic name. On the other hand, a small part, consisting of 3.6%, had heard the name of this classic restaurant. Maybe a small part of this is still given knowledge about Malay customs

Question 3 Do you have knowledge about the traditional way of life of the Malay community? Figure 6: Question 3 From this chart we can see, 60% still have knowledge of Malay customs while 16.4% have no knowledge or experience of previous Malay customs. 24.6% still have knowledge and recognize various activities in the old Malay days. Question 4 Have you seen restaurants that offer activities such as archery and horse riding? Figure 7 : Question 4 For question 4, 67.3% have never seen a restaurant that provides archery and horse riding activities. This happens because, restaurants nowadays focus more on modern ways. While 32.7% have ever found and experienced a restaurant that has this kind of activity.

Question 5 Have you ever been exposed to traditional Malay residential architecture? Figure 8: Question 5 Almost 58.2% indicated that they had been exposed to traditional Malay residential architecture and 41.8% had never been exposed to this architecture. This is because the architecture in the past was quite unique and did not use bricks. Question 6 Have you visited a typical Malay village? Figure 9 : Question 6 From the data above we can see that 54.5% still feel typical of a village in Malaysia and 45.5% have never visited or felt the atmosphere of a village in Malaysia.

Question 7 Have you ever tried or heard of sate anta berahi? Figure 10 : Question 7 From the data above, 74.5% have never known satay anta berahi. Satay anta berahi is a food of the Malay islands in ancient times. Only 25.5% still know this food. Question 8 Do you know what this food is? Figure 11 : Question 8 From the data above, 80% have never recognized the traditional cake which is the legendary Ang Phidra cake. This cake was a food of the archipelago by the Malay community in the past. Only 20% still know this food.

Question 9 Do you want to learn more about the former Malay civilization? Figure 12 : Question 9 From this data, we can see that there are still many people who show interest in learning about the Malay customs of the past. Not only that, the way of clothing as well as the activities and food of the past will also be shown in this project. So this video project will be useful for all generations and the community so that more get to know our Malay customs. 3.8. SUMMARY The main purpose of this survey is to assess the level of awareness and knowledge in the community about past Malay customs and to measure their interest in revealing them for educational purposes and appreciating the legacy of past societies to us. It can provide valuable insight into this unique Malay custom. The conclusions drawn from such a survey can be various aspects, including aspects related to education, Malay customs and more appreciating the treasures and culture and customs of previous societies.
