when I used to watch Roger Hamilton King doing the display in his shop at Fife
Avenue Mall. I was around 10 or 11 years at that time. At 13, I would bunk school to
attend antique sales.

“My interest in design in general is, I believe, an inherent thing. I have never done
any course or studies and yet I know naturally how things should be arranged,” he
said in an interview.

A random saunter in his showrooms will show a variety of antique collections and
other treasured ornaments from cupboards, tables and chairs, silverware,
artwork, wall hangings, chandeliers, vases among others.

He has grouped his collections in four showrooms which represent different
styles. African Baroque is largely filled with Victorian items from Europe, Halfway
House is more African in style, Orient Interiors has Asian art and pieces and
Acacia Trading, is a mixture of artifacts put together in a more contemporary way.

In Acacia Trading, the touch of Birch’s hand in arranging and designing can be
seen as the showroom already exudes the beauty of antiques when properly
arranged.

Besides collecting and selling to customers who still see value in antiques, Birch
Williams has used his talent to help customers that buy his collection in designing
their homes leaving them with a tasteful and stylish look.

H&S INTERNATIONAL TRENDS

Antiques often display fine craftsmanship that is harder to
come by today and feature intricate wood carving, marquetry,
or decorative flourishes that one will not find in run-of-the-
mill modern-day furniture.

“Antiques are a dying resource and you can’t get more. Until
recently, there was real good craftsman in the world but we
are getting into a time where there is no real craftsmanship
left, everything is now being mass produced and disposable.
So anybody in the future as we go along that seeks really good
quality furnishings will have to buy antiques.

“Learning an interest in old things that were beautifully made
and not mass manufactured is rewarding and fulfilling
especially in a world that is so automated and devoid of most
emotion. Antiques carry with them history and life something
a newly made item will never do. ” he says.

He also adds that as people are going for smaller and smaller
places and going for disposable decor, they literally leave
everything behind when they shift and start over again. This is
environmentally unfriendly.

“Imagine how the world will be in the next 20 or 30 years to
come with piles and piles of unwanted furniture.”

In his many years in dealing in antiques, Williams has hosted a
number of famous people at his shop but the most revered
include the late Golden Globes Award winner Dana Wynter,
who bought a few pieces from his shop as well as actress
Reese Witherspoon who used to find comfort in viewing
antiques at his shop during her visit to Zimbabwe.

He has also used his interior design skills to makeover Rhodes
Hotel in Nyanga in a bid to try and retain its original style.

If you are serious antique enthusiast, then you can not look
beyond Birch Williams shops.

bedroom from
T-Bags Home
A beautiful home brings peace to an individual and
makes one feel confident and have a sense
fulfillment. Making over homes is seen by many as a
daunting undertaking with many often associating to
the rich and affluent but according to T-bags Home a
company that specialises in supply of soft furniture
and have diversified into customised home
furniture, it is something which can be done as long
as one applies their mind to it.

Homes & Styles Magazine brings to you a special
feature of bedroom makeover from T-Bags Home
that will make your most revered home a place of
tranquility and joy.

The Director of T-Bags Home,Tanya Gumbie shared
with us how a bedroom can be styled.

“Apart from providing custom furniture for homes, .
T-Bags Home, are often called upon to update an
entire space. Recently we had the pleasure of
producing a beautiful Before & After for a Bachelor
who felt it was time to “level up”. The process and
outcome were incredibly gratifying, for both us, and
the client.

“We especially love revamping bedrooms, as this is a
space that is so personal and important to a person’s
piece of mind and well being. A bedroom needs to be
a comfortable refuge that you can come home to or
even work from.We find that a bedroom makeover is
a low hanging fruit if you are just getting your feet
wet making changes to your rental home or
apartment. It is surprising how a few affordable
surface level changes can make a big impact,” said
Tanya Gumbie.

T-bags Home shared some tips on how to make your bedroom space more a comfortable and fulfilling place.

Decide on your vibe.
Do you like dark and broody colours or light and airy pastels? There are no hard and fast right and wrongs when it
comes to expressing your personality through interior design. Once you decide on your colours you are now ready
to come up with a list of some of the things you may need to change or add to the space.

The walls, windows and floor form the foundation of the room, for the rest of the design to stand on.
If painting is prohibited by the Landlord for those renting, peel and stick wallpaper would also be a great option, as
it is easily removable without leaving any damage. Make sure you use a reputable installer, who will also be willing
to remove it when you eventually move.

Then we move on to window coverings. Apart from providing you with much needed privacy, they contribute
immensely to overall look of the room. Say for instance you have decided on a colour scheme of Blue, Grey, Taupe
and Brown, then your curtains need to tie into that colour palette. If you aren’t allowed to paint, then the curtains
may be where you start introducing your new colours in a major way. So, if you are in a room that gets more
sunlight, invest in good quality block out curtaining that is a strength of at least 80% and above. Remember though:
hanging curtains means first installing a curtain rod/rail if there isn’t one. Always install your curtain rods as close
to the seam of the wall (where the ceiling and wall meet) as you possibly can. This draws the eye up and makes the
ceiling appear higher, which elongates the room and gives the appearance of the room having more space.

Now to the floors. A lot of the older rental units are already carpeted. Often with random colours like dark green,
pink, or even orange. Unfortunately, you can’t help that. But that does not meanyou need to embrace the existing
carpeting if it does not work with your design. There is nothing wrong with putting a rug over a carpet. Another
design dilemma renters may find is old parquet flooring or ceramic tiles with busy designs. Those are just the
worst!
So here the solution is to add an area rug. If your floor is a plain carpet, feel free to add a patterned rug. However, if
we are covering already busy tiles, then a plain rug would be better. If the bedroom is small, choose a rug large
enough to fit your entire bed and nightstand/bedside tables on top.

Once you have finished laying this foundation, we can now move on to the furnishings! 19

to the subtle warmth of the wooden shelves

with a amalgamation of tall plants and small
shrubs engenders a nice reprieve from the busy
urban life. The Fiber optic lights in the ceiling
further accentuate that outdoor feel by
engendering a star lit sky illumination, making
the balcony one of the favorites place to
hangout for everyone.
