A SUCCESS STORY TO SHARE
Ryder, one of our main distribution partners, recently visited
the Do it Best world headquarters in Fort Wayne and the
Sikeston, Missouri warehouse to interview our Logistics team for a video
case study on the RyderShare system. RyderShare is a GPS system that
has played an important role in our ability to provide dynamic routing
throughout the pandemic, serving our members even better with on time
deliveries.
Do it Best and Ryder have a long history dating back to the 1980s. For
years, drivers and our logistics team have navigated challenges such as
blizzards, hurricanes, and wildfires, but 2020 was one of the toughest
challenges yet. When delivery drivers had to quarantine, it became
evident that Logistics team members needed to be all hands on deck with
communication and having the ability to reroute quickly.
“In our effort to run as efficiently as possible, our member service team in
Logistics is just two people,” explains Tom Mowery, Do it Best Outbound
Operations Manager. “RyderShare allows our team to focus on resolving
member concerns and troubleshooting issues such as missing or damaged
freight instead of trying to track down where trucks are in their routes.”
While in Fort Wayne, Ryder also shot a training video for its drivers at
Paterson Do it Best Hardware to demonstrate who we are and how we
want to serve our member-owners.
“We’re very excited about the training video as well,” adds Tom. “We
believe that demonstrating the culture of Do it Best will help retain drivers
in a time when they’re in high demand.”

HR'S NEW HACK TO ATTRACT IT PROS
Our Human Resources team held a first of its kind IT hiring
event on June 15 to quickly acquire top talent, attracting
dozens of interested professionals for open positions.
The process was comparable to a speed dating approach for candidates
in the Fort Wayne lobby. First, HR interviewed candidates to ensure a
fit for company culture. Then, an IT hiring manager and team members
conducted more in-depth interviews and asked technical questions
specific to various roles. Top candidates were scheduled for further

“We are confident some of these IT roles will quickly be filled,” shares HR
Generalist Ryan Cooley. “We also met candidates who would be perfect
for internships and other departments throughout Do it Best. Overall,
this event was successful and we look forward to hosting more hiring
fairs in the future.” Prior to publication, two candidates from the event
have already accepted offers to join the Do it Best team.

SAFETY CORNER with Mike Morris
RED, WHITE, AND BOOM!
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FIREWORKS
Fireworks are a summer staple, especially around Independence
Day. The National Safety Council advises everyone to avoid
fireworks at home and leave it to the experts. On average,
fireworks lead to 10 deaths, 12,000 injuries, and 18,500 fires
each year in the United States.
If you choose to use legal fireworks at home, here are a few tips
to protect your loved ones:
• Never allow young children to handle fireworks
• Older children should use them with close adult supervision
• Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol
• Wear protective eyewear while shooting off fireworks
• Never hold lit fireworks in your hands
• O nly use them outdoors and away from people, houses, and
flammable materials
• Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks
• K eep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks
that don’t go off or in case of fire
FOCUS ON HEALTH:
STAYING SUN SMART
July is UV Safety Month. This is a reminder to practice
sun protection, as UV rays are the strongest during
the dog days of summer.
Sunburn affects your body’s ability to cool down and can
make you dehydrated. Once your skin is sunburned, it’s
ability to release excess heat decreases significantly. To
prevent this, apply sunscreen regularly. When it comes to
effective use of sunscreen, the CDC recommends:
• Using sunscreen that is SPF 15 or higher
• Applying it at least 30 minutes before going out into the sun
• U sing sunscreens that say broad spectrum or UVA/UVB protection, as these
products work best
• U sing more than you think you need, which is roughly a full shot glass to
cover the full body or about a half teaspoon for the face
