NO CHESS IN WEEK 1
From the Principal….
Here we are already at the end of Term 1 - it has been such a short term it feels like it was only a couple of weeks ago that it
started. Our Prep children have nearly finished their first term at school and what an incredible job they are doing. As always they
have settled in to school life with relative ease, our local pre-school teachers should be very proud of how well they have prepared
the children for school life.
As always it has been a busy term and both the students and staff, and no doubt many parents are looking forward to having a break
to recharge the batteries.
CANBERRA CAMP
Last week I went with our Grade 6 students to Canberra for four days. It was the first time we have taken students to Canberra so
it was a new experience for both students and teachers. The first day was spent travelling to Canberra however we had several
stops along the way to break the long trip. We had lunch at Holbrook and the mandatory stop at Gundagai to see the dog on the
tucker box.
During the following two days we visited a number of attractions at our nation’s capital
including Parliament House, National Gallery, Australian War Memorial, Telstra Tower,
Questacon, High Court, National Capital Exhibition, Electoral Education Centre and
the Australian Institute of Sport. Although the program was jam-packed packed it was very
informative and engaging for the children. Our students were amazing - they represented the
School in a very positive manner and were a great group of children to be with.
I’m sure those parents who have children who attend the camp have heard all about the trip
and I’m certain many now know that Joe Greige is the “Selfie King” - he loves a camera and
especially a photo of himself front and centre!
Thanks to the staff who organised and attended the camp for the four days. It is always a big
ask to expect teachers to be away from their families for four days. Some of our staff members
have young children who missed them greatly.
Thanks to Joe Greige, who did the majority of the organisation and coordination with the
tour company, and to Ursula Vanderzee, Christa Kosmatos, Mavra Kotsabouikis,
Joanna Borlase, Dale Adams, Gayle Dart and Paula Sanford.

SCHOOL COUNCIL
On Monday night we had the first meeting of our new School Council. We welcomed our new members: Kate Henderson, Brett
Tingwell and Robyn Brock. Kate and Brett were elected in the Parent category along with Suki Styant-Browne and Kellee Nolan
who were re-elected. Sue Norton and Sharee Dobson were re-elected in the DET category and Robyn Brock is filling the DET
position left vacant due to Zach Blashkiw’s resignation. We also co-opted two members: Silvana Tsipiras and Lani Landeryou.
Lani was co-opted as a representative of the Parent Club.
The first task of the new council was to elect office bearers, congratulations to:
President - Suki Styant-Browne
Vice President - Irene Brown
Treasurer - Mark Smith
During the meeting the 2015 Annual Report and the 2016 Annual Implementation Plan were tabled and endorsed by School Council.
Copies of both documents will be posted on the school website at the beginning of next term.
School Council also made the decision that classroom teachers will no longer take accept any cash over $30. If parents are
required to pay for any excursions, school fees etc. that costs more the $30 it must be made using QKR, credit card or cheque. If
parents want to pay with cash they will need to take the money directly to the Office at the Senior School. The school will not
accept responsibility for any lost cash.
HOLIDAYS
Although it has been a short term some of our children are starting to get very tired as the term draws to an end. The two week
break is a good opportunity for them to relax and recuperate ready for next term.
Thursday is the last day of Term 1 and school will finish at 2.30pm. Parents - please ensure you are not late to pick up your child
as some children become quite upset if their parents are not here to pick them up on time.
I hope all families have a safe and enjoyable holiday and we see you back at school ready for the start of Term 2 on Monday
April 11th at 9.00 am.
Regards,
Janet Paterson,
Principal.

Grade Prep Report ....
What a fantastic and fun filled first term we have had in Prep!
We can’t believe it is time for the holidays already.
Well done on a great start to the year Preps!
Recently the Preps brought in their favourite soft toy or teddy bear for our Teddy Bear’s Picnic.
In the morning the children iced and decorated Teddy Bear biscuits, yummy!
At lunchtime our Teddy Bears joined us outside in the sunshine for a picnic lunch.
A fun day was had by all!
Grade 6 Report ....
On the 15th March Grade 6 left for a four-day camp to Canberra.
After spending all of Tuesday on the bus we arrived at the Eaglehawk Holiday Park and settled in to
our cabins.
On Wednesday we had tours of Parliament House and The National Gallery of Australia, as well as
Visiting the War Memorial and then going to Telstra Tower after dinner. Thursday was equally as
busy with the students visiting Questacon,The High Court of Australia, The National Capital
Exhibition, The Electoral Education Centre and the Australian Institute of Sport.
Preston Primary’s first visit to Canberra was a very tiring, yet very memorable one that we all
enjoyed immensely.

News from the Art Rooms ....
The Grade Preps have been exploring lines this term. The children painted a lined background in
either cool or warm colours. A person was drawn and painted, then bubble cut out and glued onto
their background.
Line, pattern and paint brush skills have been the focus for our Grade 1 students. They have created
some beautiful artworks using the Earth palette colours and black lines as a striking contrast.
In Grade 2 we have explored lines using fine liners and different shades of painted colour. They have
created stunning landscape pictures from desert scenes to mountain ranges. A small picture at the top
was drawn to complement the artwork.
Grade 3 have nearly finished their still life paintings. Complementary colours were chosen by most
students to allow their jug or bottle to stand out. The children explored painting by adding white to
the colours they chose, to create varying values of colour.
The Grade 4 children have nearly finished making their bridge paintings. Masking tape was used to
create a bridge on paper. The children have painted over the tape to show the sky and ground. Stipple
brushes were used to show texture in the pictures. The fun begins where the tape is removed to
unveil their bridge shapes.
Grade 5 students have completed their egg carton puppets/masks. There was a huge variety of faces
from old Grandpas to young children. The drama teacher is now using them in her program where the
children will be filming performances with their puppets on their iPads.
Grade 6 have been exploring printing. They carved out App designs from a rubber square with a
sharp tool. They used block ink to roll onto their design and print onto paper. Colours were played
with to see which ones looked the best.

Grade 3 Report ....
On Wednesday the 16th of March, Grade 3 walked to the Preston Library for a presentation by our local librarians. The
presentation covered Darebin’s past and present, looking at how our area has changed. From the Wurundjeri people, their
culture, lifestyle and guardianship of the land we now share, to contemporary streetscapes, school life and culture.
The students listened to stories about Darebin’s past and the Batman treaty that was signed near Merri Creek. They learned
about canoe trees in our area and viewed images showing the growth of our local area and how it has changed. Students got to
see and talk about photographs of what school was like at Preston Primary in years gone by. They also really enjoyed
participating in a photographic quiz that challenged students to guess who was a Local and who was a Bushranger.
“It was exciting” Aiya and Artemis 1863 Aborigines fishing at
“It was really, really interesting” Joey and Xavier night on the Merri Creek
“I learnt some new things about the past history and the first people” Holly
“I liked all the different things they showed us” Dylan
“At school, boys in the past wore bowties and casual clothes” Luisa

Head Lice ….
A reminder to parents to regularly check your child’s hair for head lice. Headlice are
extremely contagious. We suggest that you look for the following symptoms or signs that
would indicate the presence of headlice:
Generally: child scratching his/her head excessively,
On pillows: fine black powder or pale coloured material,
In the hair: signs of lice eggs (“nits” – cream or coffee coloured specks close to hair
roots,
Lice: small white or ‘greyish’ parasites the approximate size of a pinhead.
If you notice any of the above signs, treatment should be commenced immediately as your child
could be excluded from school if not treated.
