At North Tawton Community Primary School our aim is to enable all children to
develop their full potential within a supportive partnership together with parents and
carers. At school all children are encouraged to achieve the best they can and will be
constantly praised and rewarded for achieving high standards.
The School currently has 150 children on roll and consists of 6 classes, with whole
year groups in years Reception to Y3 and two mixed age classes for the Y4, 5 and
6 children. The School also has an award winning Foundation Unit which consists
of a Public-Private Partnership between North Tawton Pre-School and the School
Reception Class. This establishes a firm foundation for all the children in the school.
There are extensive school grounds with playing fields and an orchard, affording
excellent sports facilities and areas for environmental education. There are two
playgrounds and a covered swimming pool, supported by the PTA. We have a very
supportive PTA (FONTS) who provide a range of extras that make the school a better
place for learning.
Most children from North Tawton continue their education at Okehampton
College in Year 7.

The aims of the North Tawton Patient Participation Group (N.T.P.P.G.) are to advise

the North Tawton medical practice on the patients’ perspective, organise health

The Cheese Shop at Taw Valley

Established now for over 11 years the Cheese Shop at Taw Valley has gone from strength to
strength.

Selling the full range of Taw Valley
produced cheese, locally produced
Ice Cream and also supplying cheese
produced from around the group.
Four tiers of pricing are offered for
Retail, Trade, Farmers and Staff. The
shop also offers varying sizes of
Hamper, Cheese Wedding Cakes and
gift bundles.

The shop also owns a van that delivers
three times a week. Tuesday to North
Devon, Wednesday to South Devon and
on Thursday to the local area. Delivering
pre-ordered cheese to trade outlets,
hotels, farm shops and restaurants. The
shop employs four staff that run the
whole operation including van sales.
The shop is open Monday to Friday 9 - 5
and on Saturday 9 - 1.

EMERGENCY PLAN

INTRODUCTION

Past experience has shown that the people of North Tawton are very
supportive of each other in the event of a crisis. However, the Civil
Contingencies Act 2005 suggests that parish councils prepare a
contingency plan for self-help in case of an emergency. Nearly all
emergencies affecting our communities will normally be dealt with by
the emergency blue light services, local authorities and major utility
companies. However, there may be rare occasions when the
community will have to help itself. The North Tawton Town Council
have therefore resolved to prepare a community self-help emergency
plan to guide the provision of assistance. This guidance can be
adapted to any emergency.

POSSIBLE EMERGENCIES:

Snow and Ice:
This could result in fallen trees, supply disruption of power and other
utilities, blocked roads and failure of public transport.

Contact should be made with the service supplier/s, to:
• Report the loss of service;
• Obtain an estimate of time when the service would be

community in dealing with the situation until normal service is

The Town Council has established a volunteer Snow Warden
Scheme (for information please contact the Town Clerk at the
Town Council (01837 880121), Cllr S Whiteley (01837 82732) or
Cllr Mrs G Hoggins (01837 82516).

This will deal primarily with salting secondary roads and
Pedestrian routes, which are not covered by Devon County Council.

High Winds and Loss of Power and Communications:
Much of the local medium-voltage power and telecommunications
networks, both outside and within certain areas of the town/parish rely
on overhead cabling. Localised outages are therefore to be
anticipated during exceptionally windy weather. Mobile phone
coverage in the parish is patchy, and will not always therefore be able
to provide backup in the event of wired network failures.

Extreme high winds may also cause disruption – including blocked
roads – due to fallen trees and other minor structural damage to
building – Contact My Devon (see contact list)

Road Traffic Accidents or Aircraft Crash:
This would probably be only a short-term problem before the
Emergency Services would take over, but hot drinks etc., could be
available in all areas, provided by local household volunteers.

Major Pollution or Contamination Incident:
Management of such an incident is technically specialised, and
appropriate response by the North Tawton Parish community would
thus be confined to communication and observance of any measures
recommended by the Environment Agency, Police and other
Emergency Services.

Water Supply Outages:
Management is a specialised technical function of the utility supplier
(South West Water), but effectiveness of health warning will be
assisted by good communications within the local community.

Flooding:
Widespread or sustained flooding in the main population centres is
unlikely, however, flooding may develop from exceptionally intense
storm events (“flash flooding”) and/or blocked culverts and drains.
Although flash flood events are – by their nature – impossible to
anticipate, damage due to other types of flood may be mitigated by
sand-bagging to property entrances, etc., A supply of sand and
sandbags will be available through the Town Council for this purpose,
located at Fore Street Garage and the Fire Station. For information

There are a number of halls through the community which could

An emergency bag can be useful if you have to leave your home
quickly or stay indoors without power for a few days. It is easy to
prepare one in advance.
The bag should be small enough to carry and stored in a safe place
where family members can find it.

The emergency services are trained to check for the ICE number.

Standing for “In Case of Emergency”, ICE allows the emergency
services to contact someone if you are unable to do so. Think
carefully about who you chose as an ICE contact, because that
person may need to give consent for medical treatment.
