MIKE’S NOTES Mike Isaacson Artistic Director & Executive Producer 11 Superstar Welcome back! This is the 99th season of our wonderful and world famous Muny, and I am so happy you are here. Ready for a surprising and magical summer? We sure are—since Princess Aida left our stage, we’ve barely taken a break. For every new season, we set out to redefine The Muny’s not at all modest tagline, “Alone in Its Greatness.” You deserve no less. Back to surprises—and enduring magic. For those of who came of age in the ’70s, Jesus Christ Superstar was a seismic event. When Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice released the legendary “brown album,” it exploded into a world-wide phenomenon. A rock opera? About Christ? JCS was the best-selling album of 1971, ahead of Carole King’s legendary Tapestry. Generations of St. Louisans had family sing-a-longs to that album; friends sang it together in the car at the top of their lungs. Everyone knew it. Everyone loved it. Charged with the turbulence and energy of the late 60s, Superstar melted all the boundaries between rock, Broadway, religious music and popular culture. The wildly talented Rice and Webber were young and cheeky enough to position Jesus Christ not in his usual context of faith or history, but smack in the middle of popular culture. Through the power and beauty of the music and the intelligence and daring of the lyrics, Rice and Webber found a Jesus whose suffering and experience felt real and honest and contemporary. In their telling, they boldly ignored any singular conclusion about their story or its characters—that was left to the listener. Their bold idea was to just ask some questions. They asked those questions so brilliantly that people all over the world—many of them not even Christian—fell in love with JCS. The show has remained a phenomenon, with countless productions on Broadway, in London, on national tours and in amateur productions. NBC recently announced that they will broadcast Jesus Christ Superstar Live! next Easter. We entrusted tonight’s production to director Gordon Greenberg, who has approached it with the same bravado that characterized the original—while offering ideas, insights and images drawn fresh from today’s world. As he wrote to the company, “While most everyone in the audience has their own point of view about the religious narratives that followed, this show allows a glimpse of where it might have started—the relationships he struggled with, the passion that drove and haunted him, and the life he gave up as a martyr. This show, which premiered almost 50 years ago, remains as powerful as ever.” I hope you agree.

A Night At The Muny Emerson Is Proud to Salute A Great St. Louis Institution

CEA-9030B-A-A1 © 201& EDWARD D. JONES & CO., L.P. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Member SIPC Welcome to Forest Park and the opening of this season at The Muny. Tonight we journey back to Biblical times for a bold reimagining of the Gospels and the last week in the life of Jesus. Jesus Christ Superstar opened as Broadway’s first rock opera in 1971, based on an album that became an unforgettable musical from Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Its songs became mega-hits that remain familiar to many of us today. The Muny and our firm both share a long history here in St. Louis. The Muny was officially founded in 1919, and three years later Edward D. Jones Sr. opened his brokerage office downtown. Both of us have thrived and grown! Edward Jones is proud to sponsor this production and to support the arts in our community. We hope you enjoy this evening under the stars. Sincerely, Jim Weddle Managing Partner

ABOUT TONIGHT 19 In the beginning, there were many skeptics. When Jesus Christ Superstar, a two-record concept album, was released in September 1970, American soldiers were embroiled in a controversial war in Southeast Asia; here at home, protest was rampant. So when a so-called “rock opera” written by two brash Brits in their early 20s purported to equate Jesus of Nazareth with rock stars, it is understandable that some people thought its motives subversive. But in fact, Jesus Christ Superstar told neither a political nor, for that matter, a religious, story. Its iconoclastic young authors, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice, sought to tell a human story. Ever since Rice had attended a church-centered boarding school at age 15, he had been fascinated by the conflicted life of Judas Iscariot. Rice wanted to tell the story of Jesus from Judas’ point of view. “While we were writing the piece,” Rice recalls, “the word ‘superstar’ became a hot new buzz word, so we added it to the title. The phrase Jesus Christ Superstar seemed to fit so well. I think the title was one of the most significant reasons for the album’s success. But we weren’t trying to turn Jesus into a rock star. Nor were we making a statement one way or another about his divinity. It is my conviction that Judas did not believe Jesus was God, but the final determination is up to the viewer.” Why did that original two-record set become such a blockbuster? Rice credits “a combination of Andrew’s enthusiasm for theatre and my obsession with rock and roll. The mixture worked very well. At that point, nobody had brought rock and roll into the theatre. We were doing something different, which is a Golden Rule for success. You’ve got to be good, but you’ve got to be different as well.” Young audiences tapped into that difference instantly. Jesus Christ Superstar ($9.58 at Stix, Baer & Fuller) was the best-selling pop album of 1971. The concept album promptly led to a Broadway staging which ran for 711 performances. The show has been revived three times on Broadway and has enjoyed multiple long-running national tours. A 1973 film adaptation was directed by Norman Jewison (immediately after he directed Fiddler on the Roof). Jesus Christ Superstar made its Muny debut in 1985; this week’s season opener is the fifth Muny production. All these decades later, the Lord Lloyd-Webber and Sir Tim Rice are theatre royalty. Though their working partnership ended decades ago, to see Jesus Christ Superstar today is to recall a time when theatrical rock and roll was fresh and urgent and capable of sending musical shock waves around the globe. To see Jesus Christ Superstar is to be reminded anew that there is always a place in the arts for brashness and originality. – Dennis Brown To read more, go to “Dennis Br Blog” on the Muny website at muny.org. Welcome to The Muny! The Missouri Lottery encourages you to sit back, relax and prepare to be thoroughly entertained. As a sponsor, the Lottery is proud to be a part of The Muny’s rich history here in St. Louis, celebrating its 99th season. This year, the Missouri Lottery is sponsoring the East Lawn Stage, featuring Muny performers and local music and theater students performing during the Pre-Show Festival. Helping students is what the Lottery is all about, so this location is a perfect fit for us. Visit the East Lawn Stage prior to main performances, and you may even get to see a student you know on their way to becoming a star. The Missouri Lottery is also big on second chances, so it makes sense for us to be the official sponsor of rainouts here at The Muny. If your event gets rained out, you can register for a chance to win $100 worth of Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets and a Muny prize pack. Speaking of performances, one of our best performing games is Powerball, and this year, the Missouri Lottery is celebrating the game’s 25th anniversary. Since Powerball began on April 19, 1992, a total of 31 players in Missouri have won jackpot prizes ranging from $5 million to $293.7 million – the second most jackpot winners from among all the member lotteries, with a combined worth of more than $2.2 billion! Another $1.4 billion in non-jackpot prizes have also been won by Missouri Lottery players. But the real winners are the students: In the past 25 years, the game has provided more than $1.08 billion for public education. Since 1986, the Lottery has provided the state, including education, with $5.7 BILLION, including more than $284.7 million that has helped fund A+ Scholarships for Missouri students to attend up to two years at a community college or technical school. So know that when you play the Missouri Lottery, you are playing it forward for Missouri students – maybe even a local budding young musician or talented theater enthusiast to grace The Muny stage during the next decade! May Scheve Reardon Executive Director, Missouri Lottery

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER (Music) When Sunset Boulevard joined School of Rock, Cats and The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway in 2017, Andrew Lloyd Webber became the only person to equal the record set in 1953 by Rodgers & Hammerstein with four Broadway shows running concurrently. Other musicals he composed include Aspects of Love, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and Love Never Dies. His producing projects include the Olivier Award-winning Daisy Pulls It Off, Bombay Dreams, La Bête, The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz. His awards, both as composer and producer, include seven Tonys, seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, the Praemium Imperiale, the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre, a BASCA Fellowship, the Kennedy Center Honor and a Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Requiem, his setting of the Latin Requiem mass which contains one of his best-known compositions, “Pie Jesu.” TIM RICE (Lyrics) has worked in music, theatre and film since 1965, when he met Andrew Lloyd Webber, a fellow struggling songwriter. Rather than pursue Tim’s ambitions to write rock or pop songs, they turned their attention to Andrew’s obsession — musical theatre. Their first collaboration, The Likes of Us (lyrics by Tim, music by Andrew), was an unsuccessful show based on the life of Dr. Barnardo, the Victorian philanthropist. Their next three works together were much more successful: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. Tim has also worked with other distinguished popular composers such as Elton John (The Lion King, Aida), Alan Menken (Aladdin, King David, Beauty and the Beast), and Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (Chess). From Here to Eternity, with music by newcomer Stuart Brayson, co-produced with Lee Menzies, directed by Tamara Harvey, and with book by Bill Oakes, premiered in the West End at the Shaftesbury Theatre in 2013. He formed his own cricket team in 1973 and was president of the MCC in 2002.
