Zim transition and the military – The four dilemmas

As the country marks three years after the coup

Robert Mugabe in November 2017, we bring you
insights into the transitional dynamics before and
after the coup, according to an authoritative re-
port by the Zimbabwe Democracy Institute titled
‘Transition Politics In The Post-Mugabe Era’.
In this first part of a multi-series, we begin with
understanding the key background and overarch-
ing issues in the polity to date.

On 15 November 2017, an exhilarating breeze
swept across Zimbabwe as an unusual coalition
coalescing protesters, civic organisations, the
military and politicians across the political divide
crisscrossed the capital celebrating what has
come to be known as a ‘military assisted transi-

construe it as midwifery to transition into a dem-

Review & Mail Writer T
Zimbabwe’s human rights, socio-economic and
political situation deteriorated between April
2020 and September 2020, according to a new
report.
The ZImbabwe Human Rights NGO’s Political
and Human Rights Violations Report April to
September 2020 released last week says, citizens
continued to be haunted by “unremitting” State-
sponsored violence, carried out with impunity
against a backdrop of inadequate infrastructure
and insufficient political will to deal with the
violence.
This is happening against a backdrop of deploy-
ment of armed soldiers in suburbs, towns,
growth points and every street corner in the cen-
tral business district has been a constant worry
for civil society organisations and human rights
defenders.
In the period under review, the Covid-19 pan-
demic also wrought extra challenges.
“Many of the violations recorded from April
2020 to September 2020 were in the form of
harassment and intimidation,” says the report.
“The reports made ran the gamut from assault,
torture, harassment, intimidation, malicious
damage to property, partisan distribution of food
and farming implements and arbitrary arrests.
“ The total number of recorded national politi-
cally motivated human rights violations for the
period under consideration is one thousand and
forty (1 202).
“The violations were predominantly perpetrated
by members of the Zimbabwe National Army,
Zimbabwe Republic Police and certain ZANU-
PF personnel.
“The violations occurred in all 10 provinces, but
more particularly so in Mashonaland Central,
Mashonaland East, Harare, Bulawayo and Mid-
lands,” the paper said.
It accused authorities of using the cover of
Covid-19 to clamp down on dissent.

Joe Cole: Dancing
way to success

No Limits for choreographer John Cole

Desmond Munemo

Behind the choreography in a number of such
videos is John Cole, increasingly popular as a
man of innovative dance backing up great Zim-
babwean sounds.

Videos featuring his dance creations are being
seen on DStv, including Xhexhe with Ashta Eez,
who is at present based in Poland. Others feature
the likes of Mukoko, Ngoro, Setter Pace, Watora
Moyo, Ngaibake and Tinofamba Nenyasha.

“It’s mind blowing, because as a boy who sold
vegetables and was a gardener, you can imagine
the jump from there to here.

“No lie – it’s an awesome feeling watching these
on DStv, knowing millions could be watching
with me,” he said.

John also became involved in the annual DStv
Eutelsat Star Awards competition, mentoring
high school students who wished to enter.

“That was a fun experience, and I was thrilled
the students were well versed with who I am and
what I have done,” said John.

He has been in a journey of dance and choreogra-
phy for almost 10 years and feels the effort and
hard work in getting established and known is
paying off.

A Genius in his own way

Socialiate Genius Kadungure aka Ginimbi died in the early hours of
November 8, shocking Zimbabwe. People shared the best memories of him...

Review & Mail Writer
He was known as a rich, young and wild party animal with an expensive taste for
cars and luxury. And girls. His adventures spanned Zimbabwe and South Africa
where he had massive interests in business and pleasure.
Genius Kadungure redefined partying, often conducting ridiculously fancy and
degenerate “all-white” birthday parties.

He was the King. He made a name not just for himself but other socialites and
other little characters who had their two minutes of fame, the setting being his
massive Domboshava mansion.

He told Review & Mail during a visit there in August that, for all its flamboy-
ance, the home which has three vast wings —equipped with all the modern fit-
tings including a pool, a 5-D cinema and a state of the art gym—was work in pro-
gress.
“I am going to invite you media to come with proper cameras and showcase this
for the first time,” he said. He was soft-spoken and laid back, and showed us
around the compound. We ended the conversation resting on his newly acquired
Ferrari. Meanwhile, he spent some time on the phone negotiating a new deal for a
new Range Rover, with a South African businessman. Now, he is no more. On
the news of his death, people from different walks of life paid tribute to one man
who was definitely a sinner but a genius in his own right.
