Doing Good
Better
Never stop
MAKING it badder,
Better, bolder
— ever.RobertEgger
DCCK Founder
from the CEO Michael F. Curtin, JR.
At DC Central Kitchen, we believe that the work we do every day isn’t charity. It’s
good business. Feeding people who are hungry, training people who are unemployed,
and putting nutritious food on plates instead of in landfills are all good things. But just
doing good isn’t good enough. We believe that we—as an organization, as a sector, and
as a society—must do good better.
Last year, our community asked us to do more than ever: more meals, more training, more nutrition education,
more job creation. And thanks to supporters like you, DCCK met those demands. We prepared more than
2.5 million healthy meals for DC’s homeless shelters, schools, halfway houses, and nonprofits. We ran a record
eight Culinary Job Training courses for chronically unemployed adults—with an 89% job placement rate. We
taught practical, pragmatic healthy eating techniques at 40 schools and corner stores in DC’s low-income
neighborhoods. And we employed 60 of our own culinary graduates to carry out our programs.
That’s all good. But what matters is that we did good, better in Fiscal Year 2014 than ever before.
Thanks to close partnerships with dietetics programs, we evaluated the nutritional quality of our meals and
dramatically increased our scratch-cooked, whole grain offerings. Our Culinary Job Training program didn’t just
help people find a job; we helped them keep those jobs by investing in long-term evaluation and follow-up
services. During their first year of employment, our 2013 graduates earned a collective $1.7 million in wages
and paid approximately $339,000 in payroll taxes back into our community.
Our nutrition education efforts have always been good, but they were better this year because we empowered
more low-income consumers to actually purchase affordable, healthy foods. Education, in a vacuum, means
nothing if people can’t then exercise good dietary choices—and that’s what we saw: more than 87,800
nutritious items were purchased at 67 corner stores that stocked and sold DCCK products.
And perhaps most importantly, we made the jobs created at DCCK better than ever before. We increased
starting hourly wages from $12.50 to $13.60 because a job at DCCK can and must provide a true pathway out
of poverty. We continue to cover 100% of employee health insurance costs and match 100% of all employee
retirement contributions up to 4% of salary. It isn’t good enough for nonprofits to call for living wages and pay
their own people the bare minimum. At DCCK, we believe employers have to do better. And we’re leading the
way, providing an average hourly wage of $15 for our hourly employees.
We couldn’t do good, let alone do it better, without your incredible support. I am humbled daily by
the generosity shown by our donors, volunteers, and community partners. I hope you enjoy reviewing our
accomplishments from the past year and that you’ll continue to join us in making our community a better place
for everyone who calls it home.

Samson graduated from the Culinary Job Training program in August 2013 after
completing his internship at the Sodexo-run kitchen within Marriott International’s
headquarters in Bethesda, MD. Samson was such a dedicated intern that Sodexo
hired him immediately upon graduation. His personal and professional growth over
the course of DCCK’s program inspired Samson’s son Beyne to enroll the following
summer. Today, they are both employed in the culinary field.
