SAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT RUBRICS FOR 43 STUDENTS OF YEAR 1
47
However, I do reacted reasonably to the students based on a mixture of class
performance, percentage correct, and comparison with past classes' performances on
the same material. Thus, it is possible for everyone in the class to get a good grade, or
the opposite. For example, it is rare for a student who attends class regularly and does
all of the class work to receive a grade below a C. Otherwise, she or he did not perform
even after several consultation and have attitude issues. On the other hand, to receive
an A, one must score consistentlyhigh marks on exams and assignments.
Cooperative learning:
For many years I have assigned group projects in some of my classes. I always took
opportunity to collaborate with industrial partner thus it gives exposure to the student
about collaborative project that involve sponsorship, publicity, event management,
community service, and industrial experience. For instance, the pictures below are the
activities held at Royal Selangor International.
And in the past several years, I have incorporated more cooperative learning
techniques into the class sessions. These techniques usually involve working in pairs or
groups of five on a short assignment, with specific instructions on how to share ideas
and come up with a common solution. The outcome of group project has to be
48
presented by group with every member play role in delivering the idea. At the end of
the presentation we discuss the topic to obtain options and gain various solutions.
Assignments & Projects:
I try to construct the brief according to
technical requirement of engineering
drawing and ISO specification. I try to
make the requirement as clear as
possible, thus it will not confuse the
student what to achieve at the end of
project delivery. In the same time, I
emphasize the important of
understanding the knowledge the
student should gain throughout the
process. However, I keep on the idea of student capability in delivering the needed
information based on specific requirement that acquire them to produce it by strict of
discipline. Not to be judgemental, but I have to carefully train the student how to
manage their job etiquette, professionalism and credibility to sustain the knowledge in
a long run.
‘Although I grade their project on a strict curve, I must follow
the marking rubric according to UPM academic taxonomy and
course teaching plan to evaluate every student’s performance
and what is need to be improved. If the entire class does well,
then everyone gets a good grade, and conversely if everyone
does poorly’

5.0 IMPROVEMENT IN TEACHING AND LEARNING
THROUGH REFLECTION AND RESEARCH
It is my priority in my teaching career to improve my method and technique. Hence,
the primary focus in this process is providing an environment which promotes better
learning. This means looking at all aspects of the course, not just trying to improve my
lecturing skills. I have found that it is especially important to remain flexible, friendly
and modify the teaching methods to fit the students learning ability in the class.
It is important to talk to the students and grade some assignments and projects early
in the course to get an idea of the various students' strengths and weaknesses. For
example, some students thrive on lectures with lots of theories; others need lots of
examples and visual materials. Some students learn well in groups, and others prefer
more individual attention. Therefore, I try to adjust my teaching methods accordingly
to hopefully benefit all of the students. I also encourage my students to read my
published article as additional knowledge sources. Then, I get the students to discuss
on the topics of my articles to inspire them how to gain appropriate information and
present it in a quality output.
In order to increase the effectiveness in my teaching, I attended several Course
Development Programs arranged by the university such as:-
1. 3 courses of EAGLE Intellectual Capability Training (2016 and 2017). The workshop
intended to help lecturer in teaching technique to help university students engaged
in the learning process and outcome.
2. ICGPA (Integrated Cumulative Grade Point Average) workshop, 2016. A workshop
intended to understand the appropriate rubric for student evaluation to improve
the learning process in students and to identify the student performance.
3. Putrablast Student Blended Learning. The workshop intended to increase effective
teaching techniques using electronic networking SCL in classes.
Here are some of the changes I have recently incorporated into my classes:-
• Better organization and more suitable syllabi based on the taxonomy and
trending issue
55
• Close discussion and get into group/individual communication for effective
knowledge understanding
• More encouragement to student to work in group on some homework
assignments
• High use of interactive and visual materials
• Various exposure by visiting the industrynetwork
• Providing more reference sources, including web-based references
• Obtaining more feedback from students: feedback forms and mid-semester
conferences
• Assigning interesting extra credit problems, mostly to stimulate the better
students and to help students improve their grade if they had a poor
performance on an earlier exam
In particular, I have been trying to consciously slow down and not try to cover so much
material in class. I want to do a better job covering the most important topics that I
can leave more material for the students to learn on their own, with my guidance and
direction. Also, I will apply widely the knowledge processing technique learned from
the attended professional course and workshop.
In the future, I will continue to try to obtain better methods in class for determining if
the students really understand the current topic. As the social media is the most
retrieval medium I would like to experiment with more disseminating class materials,
such as with interactive web-based materials using skype, facebook, Instagram,
multimedia files and if possible, 3D virtual reality application. Finally, I would like to
make them more of a learning tool rather than just a method of judgement.

6.0 KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE SHARING IN
TEACHING AND LEARNING: CASE STUDY
In order to achieve certain level of performance from my students, I have sought some
rules and requisition for them to comply. For the case study, I will take IND3800 (Plan and
Completion Technology) as my model. In my class I always advice and notify them at the
beginning of the semester about the rules an d guidelines they should follow. One of the
rules is if a late comer arrives fifteen minutes after the class started, the person is not
allowed to join because it can disturb other students concentration. Since IND3800 is a
three hour credit subject and attendance is compulsory to all of the registered students in
this course. If the total attendance is less than 80%, the student will not be allow to
proceed in the following project (project 02) nor to be asses in the final assessment.
However an extra optional 5% bonus mark will be given to students who have full
attendance. In terms of project submission, every student must submit within the time
frame give (refer course schedule below). Any late submission, the marks will be deducted
50% of the evaluated marks. I also clarify to my students about plagiarism. Plagiarism is
totally not allowed and if caught, the person will be dismissed from the subject or
semester. I allowed my students to wear casual clothes as long as they wear it neat and
nicely. However, as my class which held in lab, I strictly advise them to wear according to
ISO requirement to ensure their safety. In class, I use the white board and LCD projector to
convey the design lectures. I will request the technician to prepare the LCD projector and
laptop beforehand. I always encourage students to comment their friends’ outcome
hence they can practice the knowledge obtained and to measure whether they
understood it. From there, I can recognize the pattern of student’s understanding and the
quality of my teaching and mentoring techniques. If I found out a deterioration of interest,
I will try to change my approach in the following session.
Explaining session will be held on early stage of project given to complete every
assignments. The interim of the assignments will be announced at the beginning of the
semester in order to prepare them. Feedbacks and suggestion for improvement were
given during every assignments evaluated. Meanwhile, by the end of the semester, I
usually recap the discussion and ask questions and final project in order to measure their
understanding on technical and design knowledge for them to complete high quality of
outcome. The students are required to submit the project on the decided date and
location stated in project brief given. If any student fails to do so, she/he will not be
assessed and eligible to be failed. For the final project, I do the marking with highly
accurate evaluation and precise judgement according to the marking rubric. Since I am in
the teaching engineering drawing, 3D model making and creative design design, I feel that
the students need to develop and challenge their critical thinking in order to build
knowledge strength and vitality. I believe by being an understanding and caring mentor
can help develop the students’ attitudes in learning.
64
7.0 GUIDANCE AND SUPERVISION
7.1 STATEMENT OF INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY USED IN GUIDANCE
AND SUPERVISION
Also, I often check up with students by timely basis discussing their role in producing
good outcome in technical environment. I need to excite them in a way of sharing my
previous experience with the industry I involved with. I often remind them about the
knowledge they gathered at the early stage of the course as I understand the student
tend to forget what they have learned throughout the time.
Availability:
I encourage students to occupy the five office hours per week, and I make myself
available at other times as well. I tell my students they are welcome to come by my
office at other times, and unless I have an immediate deadline or meeting or class, I
will be able to help them. To keep update with the student, I notify them my detailed
schedule in advanced.
And, most of the time, I acted professionally to the outcome which does not achieve
the required par by encouraging them to spent more time in understanding the actual
objective of course therefore the high quality of final outcome will be able to produce
by them at the end of it.
Feedback:
I have tried to increase communication and feedback both to and from my students. I
collect the contact addresses of all students at the beginning of the class so that I can
quickly notify them of changes or hints on assignments, temporary changes in office
hours, etc. I also publish this class list on my office notice board so that the students
can contact each other for notes and group study. I tell them how I view their work so
far and try to give them suggestions for areas in which to improve, and I find out from
them about any problems they are having. In addition, I also approach them through
social media and electronic communication to gain their trust and giving the
psychological comfort.
At the first class meeting, I hand out a syllabus which gives the general information for
the course. It lists ways to contact me: office number, phone number, and email
address, for the class. It also informs the students about the prerequisites, text, topics
to be covered, the number of assignments and projects, information on homework
assignments (approximate number, types of problems, grading policy, possibilities for
revision of incorrect solutions, etc.), and grading policy. If the class requires use extra
65
special tools or computer, the syllabus includes a section describing how they will be
used in the class.
Second, it gives students a good idea of where they stand in the course, so that there
are no surprises at the end. And finally, it allows me to take other factors into account
when I make up final grades, resulting in increases for some students at the end of the
course. I spend quite a lot of time in the process of figuring and deliberating final
grades. As a result, I very rarely have any student who thinks that his or her final grade
is unfair or unexpected.
