Educational Resources

(OER) Award

When people talk about the internet on things, e-learning has become an integral part of an

educational entity. The learners and the stakeholders were experiencing numerous approaches

using electronic media. This emerging event has challenged the current education provider to fulfil

the technical requirement in preparing material as the digital learning media. The technology

could play a vital role to ensure the open educational resources able to deliver the intended

knowledge to the digital behavioural generation of learners. Therefore, my focus is to passionately

work with technology to produce an effective open educational resource by creating various

engaging digital materials with fun and interactive platform. I created a state-of-the-art integrated

digital communicative platform with interlinked resources to encourage the workability of syllabus

delivery and the effectiveness of online teaching as a new way of teaching-learning and

assessment approach. The approach is to sustain the learners’ focus by experiencing the

interactive activities during the learning process and producing the output. The approaches

involved the students’ design thinking in managing the information processing. I received positive

feedback from stakeholders and several recognitions from the institution for my e-learning

method with great acceptance. The approach is cost-effective, utilizes student-centred ability, and

is much practical than the conventional method. The integrated digital communicative platform

should heed the benefit of incorporating a new norm of e-learning to facilitate the future-ready

graduate to be more professional with the gained knowledge. Siti Mastura

Abstract

The online teaching approach in higher learning education has received an active scale application amongst universities during the
unprecedented event of the Covid19 pandemic in 2020. Despite its broad application in various kinds of subjects, online teaching
seems to be a major obstacle for the industrial design model making subjects that require hands-on experience learning. Therefore,
due to the challenges experienced by both lecturers & students such as face-to-face monitoring, hands-on skill development,
unconducive fabrication tools/workspace & limited resource of material, this study reports the attempt of a new norm of e-learning
through the application of continual maker-based (CoMB) project to mitigate the challenges in doing a practice-led assessment.
The project was conducted in an industrial design model-making subject with 42 students for one semester at the instant of time the
pandemic took place. The continual maker-based (CoMB) project is designed with segmented instructions and integrated technical
references for building a portable machine tool to produce 4 serial assignments. This study reviewed how the new design of
continual maker-based (CoMB) project corresponds to the blended online learning with novice students in making design models
in their work environments, low access to resources for advanced material, and low experience in fabrication skills. Subsequently,
their ability of visual information processing and creativity of psychomotor skill improvisation was assessed at the end of the
semester based on the continual maker-based (CoMB) output and recorded practical demo. This study illustrates the challenges
faced by the students in comprehending the provided information on technical needs to comply with limited resources of material
and fabrication techniques. Secondly, to discover the effectiveness of knowledge acceptance by the students through the
outputs from continual maker-based (CoMB) projects that are oriented by sequel processes. Lastly, this is to help the lecturers to
conduct an online practice-led assessment that is so different from a normal tangible assessment in a workshop. In summary, the
results of the practice-led assessment approach are much practical to be evaluated to facilitate the crucial evaluation of the
psychomotor domain on every student’s skill in the fabrication process and workflow management

I realised portfolio one of the most important element that employers look for
especially in the design field. Portfolio are like the front man that represents our
potential and ability. Having a digitalised creative in sites (InDE- PORT) and
linkedin really shows the professionalism and attract employer interest. And most
importantly, they know where to find you.

Gary (Food Product Designer)

This platform is a very good place for students to build their e-portfolio in the digitalized world.

Everything can be published with just a click. I have gone through a few interviews in the past few

months, and some of the company are quick surprise with my google site e portfolio. I believe we are

somewhere near the fully digitalized world, I think we have to be prepared to practice everything which

will be related to the era. Therefore, I think the professional class is a very good subject for the final year

students to be prepared before enter to the real world.

WhaCt URRENT STUDENTSsaid....

Chuah Kar Jun (3rd year student- online learner)

As a student, I had experienced two years online learning during pandemic period. For me, online learning method does

bring many challenges to both lecturers and students. During online classes, lecturers were more difficult to observe and

evalute student's situation. As the reason above, most of the students will more easier to distract by other factor, which

include mobile phone, tv and family members, which may heavily affect teaching quality during online learning method.
Besides that, students will be afraid and nervous to ask question during online classes, compare to face to face teaching

method. As a design student, we were faced much more challenges as we need to prepare own stationary and tools to

finish our project. However, from the aspect of assessment, students will be more easier to prepare and submit their work

from home. Online and offline methods have their own props and cops, student's attitude was most important during

their study.

Mushrifah Mukhzali (2nd year student - online/f2f learner)

From my point of view as a student, I find it very engaging during online class and studio classes with Dr

Mastura. This is because Dr always asked questions after lessons, which tests the focus of students during

online lectures. Not only that, Dr always helped us in designing our product which related to our design

concept and ideation. I find it very encouraging and I also get many lessons from every comment and idea

that Dr gave. I find growth and improvements in my design and presentation skills.

Lynda Lian Yoke Keng

Dr Mastura has been innovative and took initiative to bring her students back into class

since the pandemic begins. As tutors, we all know the challenges we will face with the new

era of online learning. A lot of uncertainties we foresee what will work and didn't.

Nevertheless, this didn't stop Dr Mastura to keep on fine-tuning her teaching approach to

engage with students and maximise their learning objectives. She is one lecturer that i

know who cares a lot for her students for their success. She will deliver, commit and

encourage her students to her best ability to ensure they understand and absorb what's

being taught. I must say she is a role model that deserves recognition.

Technology is only a tool, the educator is the one who is responsible to humanising it for the better knowledgeable future

generations. University is still valid with e-learning + pure heart to teach and learn
