Friend of Children Award Cunningham for assistance and, thanks to faithful donors, the agency was able to meet her needs and covered her tuition and books for two classes. Martina was working full time while raising Jayla but she was determined! Since those Parkland days, Martina has come a long way. She works at the Housing Authority of Champaign County where she started as a program assistant for the YouthBuild Program, which provides job training and educational opportunities for at-risk youth who have previously dropped out of high school. She has since been promoted to senior case manager. Martina is enrolled in the REMAX real estate license program with hopes of becoming a licensed agent. She is also on track to earn a Bachelor of Art degree in Business Administration from Eastern Illinois University in 2023. Martina Harvey Harris knew as a young teenager that everything about her life was already different. She and her older sister had been living with an uncle but when she was 13 years of age, she entered Cunningham’s foster care program. Cunningham staff made sure she was taken care of and felt as comfortable as possible. Years later, at age 18, Martina began receiving services through Cunningham’s Independent Living program. For three years, she worked with her case manager, Chalaine Davis, who helped her learn self-sufficiency and independence while she and her daughter Jayla lived on their own in the community. In 2017, Martina had a desire to take classes at Parkland Junior College to get one step closer to an associate’s degree in business administration. She reached out to Outstanding Alumni Award “Cunningham gave me unconditional support.” ~ Martina Harvey Harris ‘22 Papa John’s has helped Cunningham to carry out amazing work with an annual donation through its partnership with the Illinois Marathon. For decades, we’ve proclaimed this at Cunningham and we illustrate that in the stories we share about our youth and families who, through hard work and determination, are able to heal, learn and grow. Personally, I love a good story. Don’t you? Especially when the story weaves in our mission to care for youth and families in crisis. Stories allow us to experience “all the feels” as hopeless situations turn into hopeful ones over time. Uncertainty grows into stability, reliance turns into resilience, fear grows into trust, and the vulnerable become stronger. Sometimes, however, “all the feels” can include uneasiness. I think we all have some anxiety associated with our latest visits to the gas pump and grocery store. Inflation, ongoing work force issues and a downturn in the markets are headwinds we have all faced in the last fiscal year. But, guess what? Even in the midst of adversity and challenges, hope rises here. Our amazing Cunningham staff stay the course and remain committed to the youth and families we serve, allowing them to thrive and flourish. You, our donors, friends and supporters, also remain consistent. You continue to rise to the occasion in countless ways. Your belief in, and support of, the difficult work we do here is immeasurable. Because of your generosity, the dedication of our staff and the willingness of our youth and families to accept help, hope is possible. And you will see just how in the following pages. [ hope is RISING through our residential treatment ] For our youth, a new school year can bring out nerves and anxiety. That used to be true for Tony*, but thankfully, it isn’t anymore. In fact, Tony saw a lot of positive changes in his life over the summer. And come fall, he was at a new school, in a new town, with a new family. Tony came to Cunningham in June 2021 after his adoptive parents surrendered their parental rights. Having lived in an unhealthy and negative environment, he had low self-esteem. He didn’t believe he had value, anything to offer or that things were ever going to get better. Over time, Tony began to feel good about himself and have a better outlook on his life. “I think what happened for him here at Cunningham is that he got accepted for himself,” Cunningham’s Chaplain Gay said. “He was feeling really bad about himself and about what happened to him, but our staff and the other youth were saying positive things about him and he really embraced that.” When our youth are not in school, our staff incorporate group and community activities into our kids’ daily schedules which promote physical activity, social interaction, building independent life skills and learning to access community services and resources. One of these activities is the Teen Lab at the Urbana Free Library—a teen-directed space that promotes creativity, peer instruction and community building. Tony is social, popular and comfortable at Cunningham, but he had some apprehension about the Teen Lab. “Before Tony’s first visit to the Teen Lab, he expressed his concerns over being in that environment around other kids,” Mike, a Cunningham counselor, said. “We discussed how nervous he gets in those situations and how he struggles interacting with people, especially kids his age, that he doesn’t know. I assured him that if he felt uncomfortable at any point, there were safe spots in the library he could stay while his peers were in the lab.” The Teen Lab is open to the public and on average, there are 5-15 youth there at a time. There, youth can record music with keyboards, guitars, drums, and computers; design objects and use an engineering software to print items on a 3D printer; and play Wii and PS4 on the big screen. When playing video games, conversations about what is happening on the screen naturally occur which often lends itself to talking about other things. Tony thrived in this environment. “Tony ended up being one of the most social kids at the lab,” Mike said. “He became more comfortable around new people, engaged in appropriate social interactions and was able to develop his social skills. I believe this experience will help him develop and engage in new relationships in his new school and other situations now that he has transitioned from Cunningham to a home setting.” Tony was elated to move in with his new foster parents, who are in the process of adopting him. When he left Cunningham, he had no fear about how he would be treated by his new family. He feels at home and accepted there, and knows he has their unconditional love. [ hope is RISING through our residential treatment ] [ 5 ] “There’s a special place in our hearts for all our kids,” Shacairy said, “and their well-being is at the top.” As a milieu coordinator at Cunningham, Shacairy supervises the direct care staff at the Girls Group Home and works hard to create a safe, therapeutic living space. She helps our young ladies expand their interests and gain confidence as they venture out to public school, a goal of all our youth. “Working with this teenage girl population…oh my goodness,” Shacairy said, “but something keeps me going and it’s the kids. I like to do the fun things. I want them to experience things they may miss out on in life.” Our staff works hard to give our young people special experiences, like prom, which the United Women in Faith have helped fund the past three years. Community experiences are also important for their development. “We try to find positive opportunities for them, like mentorships and groups they identify with,” Shacairy said. “It’s important for them to be out in the community, so we know they can act appropriately and don’t have social anxiety. If we just keep them on campus, we’re hindering their progress, but we have to know they’re ready.” Dominique* is ready. She is thriving while taking classes at an area high school. She’s a member of the Korean Club and excelling in her art class. She had one of her paintings in The Eric Show at the University of Illinois. “To see her growth and maturity now, oh it’s immense, like leaps and bounds,” Shacairy said. “Dominique is very artistic and she talks about how art helps her to cope with the things she’s been through.” When Dominique was six years old, she and her siblings were placed in foster care after experiencing years of abuse and neglect. As Dominique got older, she couldn’t control her extreme anger and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Instead of telling people how she was feeling, she would lash out because she didn’t know how to cope with her anger. Dominque was hospitalized and, after living in multiple foster homes, she was eventually placed in residential care. “I finally decided I wanted to learn to control my anger and use my words instead of being physical,” Dominique said. “At Cunningham, I realized I am going to be all right; I am in a safe place and no one can hurt me again. I began to trust others and open-up.” In the spring, Dominique, and two of her peers, participated in the “That’s What Teens Say” program— a three-day immersion program that takes girls through confidencebuilding exercises, improv games and developing and writing their personal stories. “They could be vulnerable among their peer group, which was good,” Shacairy said. “They learned they’re not the only ones that go through things like anxiety and bullying. It was a great experience.” The program culminated in a final story-sharing performance where Dominique said, “Now that I am in high school, I know I will always have myself to depend on and when things get hard, I know how to solve it. I am a better me now and I can accept myself and love myself the way I am.” Donovan UWFaith Dunlap Prospect UWFaith DuQuoin First UWFaith DuQuoin Sunfield UWFaith Dwight UWFaith East Moline Christ Glory Circle East Moline Christ UWFaith East Moline Christ UWFaith Patience Circle East Peoria UWFaith East St. Louis Trinity UWFaith Edinburg UWFaith Edwardsville Immanuel UWFaith Edwardsville St. John’s UWFaith Effingham Centenary UWFaith Ellsworth UWFaith Elmwood UWFaith Embarras River District UWFaith Enterprise West UWFaith Fairbury First UWFaith Fairfield Ellen Moore UWFaith Fairview Center UWFaith Fairview Heights Christ UWFaith Farina UWFaith Farmer City UWFaith Farmington UWFaith Flora First UWFaith Forrest Chatsworth UWFaith Galesburg First UWFaith Galva Bishop Hill UWFaith Geneseo First UWFaith Geneseo Grace UWFaith Gillespie First UWFaith Glen Carbon New Bethel UWFaith Godfrey First UWFaith Goreville UWFaith Granite City Nameoki UWFaith Grant Park UWFaith Green Valley UWFaith Greenfield UWFaith Griggsville UWFaith Hamilton UWFaith Hammond UWFaith Hanna City UWFaith Harrisburg First UWFaith Havana UWFaith Herscher UWFaith Hills Grove UWFaith Hillsdale UWFaith Hindsboro UWFaith Hudson UWFaith Humboldt UWFaith Illinois Great Rivers Conference UWFaith Illinois River District UWFaith Illiopolis UWFaith Indianola UWFaith Industry UWFaith Iroquois River District UWFaith Jacksonville Centenary UWFaith Jacksonville Centenary UWFaith Hope Circle Jacksonville Grace UWFaith Jacksonville Wesley Chapel UWFaith Joliet Grace UWFaith Kankakee Asbury UWFaith Kankakee St. Mark UWFaith Kankakee Trinity UWFaith UNITED WOMEN IN FAITH DONORS July 1, 2021 - June 30, 2022 +Positive Opportunities +Positive continued
[ hope is RISING through our spiritual services ] [ 6 ] Camp The formative experience of packing and getting ready to attend an overnight camp is a special childhood memory for many, and one that Liam,* a youth in Cunningham’s Residential Treatment Program, won’t soon forget. His church camp experience with youth from all over the region was the highlight of his summer. Like most camps, there was canoeing, hiking, campfire worship, fishing and crafts, but when we asked Liam what the best part was, he simply said, “the people.” “He really bonded with his group,” Cunningham’s Chaplain Gay said. “He showed me a group photo and told me about each one including his two camp counselors.” Liam loved experiencing a different routine and just being a kid. He shared how much fun it was the first night in the cabin when he and his bunkmates stayed up until 1 a.m., just laughing, talking and getting to know one another. “Liam is generally on the quiet side, but since he has gotten back, he can’t seem to stop talking about camp!” Gloria, one of his staff, said. Along with exploring the great outdoors and building new friendships, the camp provided a chance for young people to deepen their faith. For Liam, a particularly meaningful experience was the evening they spent at Inspiration Point, where they each let go of a pain or hurt and forgave someone for something they had done. As a week of faith and fun ended, campers wrote farewell messages to one another. Some of the messages they wrote to Liam included, • I’m so glad you came to camp this week. I hope to see you next year. • You are very patient and quiet. You are very nice, and I hope to see you again. • I have loved seeing you make new friends and get outside your comfort zone. You are such a kind and gentle sprit. Keep being yourself and thank you for being a great listener. • You bring calmness into the room. • It was so nice to meet you and spend a week with you. You’re such a fun soul. • You are a cool dude. I liked talking to you after worship. • You are cool and funny. Liam had a hard time saying goodbye to his newfound friends as they concluded their time together with a group hug. With memories that will last a lifetime, Liam was reminded that despite past difficult life circumstances that led him to Cunningham, he is like other kids his age. He can fit in with new people and not just fit in, but contribute and make an impact on others. Liam was inspired. [ 7 ] I can It was standing room only in the Spiritual Life Center chapel. High school graduates’ Serenity and Karmen* strolled down the aisle as Pomp and Circumstance played and students, teachers and staff cheered and applauded them. What makes each Gerber graduation special and unique is that teachers speak about the journey of each youth and President/CEO Marlin Livingston provides remarks and advice as they start a new chapter in their lives. This ceremony was special for another reason, too, as Serenity, one of the graduates, addressed the crowd. “Serenity is not the first student to speak at graduation, but it rarely happens,” Gerber Principal Jennifer Rohn said. “She advocated for it and was willing to write her thoughts in advance to be approved. Serenity did a lovely job. She is a young lady with so much potential!” Serenity now also believes in her potential. She doesn’t sugarcoat what she’s been through and readily admits her path to hope and healing has been hard, very hard. But she now realizes her own strength and that she holds the power to carry on. “There may be some big success stories of kids who have been at Cunningham and yeah, I guess I could be one of those success stories,” Serenity said. “I want kids to know that it’s not going to be easy. You’re going to have hard times but later on, like me, you’re going to see that being at Cunningham changed a lot of things and made a difference.” UNITED WOMEN IN FAITH DONORS July 1, 2021 - June 30, 2022 Peoria Bethel UWFaith Peoria Bradley Epworth UWFaith Peoria First UWFaith Peoria University UWFaith Peter Cartwright UWFaith Petersburg UWFaith Pinkstaff UWFaith Piper City UWFaith Port Byron Church of the Cross UWFaith Port Byron First UWFaith Powers UWFaith Preemption UWFaith Prophetstown Loraine UWFaith Quincy Union UWFaith Quincy Vermont Street UWFaith Rankin UWFaith Ransom UWFaith Roanoke UWFaith Rochester UWFaith Roseville UWFaith - Mary Circle Rosiclare UWFaith Rossville UWFaith Rural UWFaith Rushville First UWFaith Salem Grace UWFaith San Jose UWFaith Sangamon River District UWFaith Saunemin UWFaith Savoy UWFaith Sheffield Fairview UWFaith Sheffield UWFaith Shelbyville First UWFaith Shelbyville Fourth Street UWFaith Sherman UWFaith Spoon River District UWFaith Springfield Douglas Avenue UWFaith Springfield First UWFaith Springfield Kumler UWFaith Springfield Laurel UWFaith Stonington UWFaith Streator First UWFaith Sullivan UWFaith Swan Creek UWFaith Tolono UWFaith Tonica UWFaith Toulon UWFaith Tremont UWFaith Troy UWFaith Tuscola UWFaith United Women in Faith, Inc. Many of our youth often find it difficult to develop connections due to past trauma, but over time through therapy and education, our kids begin to heal, learn and grow. Ms. Jess, a longtime high school teacher in our Gerber education program, develops lesson plans in her social skills class that further this growth. “Because our juniors and seniors are preparing to transition from high school, it is important they practice their conversational skills and gain confidence so they can be successful adults in jobs and relationships,” Ms. Jess said. “While having conversations come easy for us, that’s not always the case with our kids.” Students spent a few weeks talking about building healthy relationships and the importance of active listening and learning about others. They were then given eight minutes with each of their classmates to practice conversation skills and turn-taking. At the end of each eight minutes, the students had to write down one thing they learned about their peers. It was a fun exercise that proved to be beneficial, especially for Jack. “I am so proud of Jack,” Ms. Jess said. “With hard work and the help of our social skills classes, he has gained confidence. He recently completed a job application and interview through the Gerber Vocational Program and is now working at the Urbana Free Library. He will graduate this school year with essential skills and wants to work at a pet store and volunteer at the Humane Society.” Sixteen young people across our three educationprograms celebrated high school graduations. [ hope is RISING through our education programs ] [ 8 ] The news was bittersweet for Phyllis.* She was surprised, thrilled and excited that her daughter, Penny*, who six years earlier was struggling with educational success, had earned enough credits to graduate high school. But at the same time, this meant Penny would no longer be enrolled at CIRCLE Academy in Urbana (CAU). “Thank you, Mr. Hogue!” Phyllis told the CAU principal. “We’ve been with you for six years. Penny knows nothing else and the thought of going on without you is incredibly overwhelming.” Navigating the next steps into adulthood is indeed challenging and understanding the resources available to support young adults is intimidating. But for CIRCLE Academy alumni, they are not alone in this process. CIRCLE continues to offer support, advice and sometimes just a listening ear, to students and their parents after graduation. “Once in the CIRCLE family, always in the CIRCLE family,” Mr. Hogue said proudly. Phyllis enrolled her daughter Penny at CAU when her needs became more than her public school district was equipped to handle. CIRCLE’s excellent partnership with school districts in Champaign county allow youth, like Penny, to get the individualized support they need to thrive. Phyllis worked closely with the district and Principal Hogue to develop an Individual Education Plan (IEP) that addressed all of Phyllis’s concerns and offered educational support for Penny. In addition to Penny’s educational challenges, her tendency to run away when situations became too much was a major concern. You see, when in crisis, Penny’s mind would activate the flight section of her brain causing her need to physically run. CIRCLE staff quickly realized Penny was not running to a destination or from a person, but instead, her body was responding to how her mind handled challenges. “Penny wasn’t running to anywhere, she was just running,” Mr. Hogue explained. “With a large, open campus, it was important to have a safety plan for her during a crisis.” The safety plan included a safe destination. Penny’s support team at CIRCLE knew they couldn’t always prevent her from running so they instead encouraged her to run to the playground in the middle of campus where it was safe. This directive not only gave Penny a target destination, but gave her mind a goal as well. Over time, staff members were able to provide new destinations inside the school, like the refocus room or her social worker’s office. Eventually, Penny stopped running. The support Phyllis received from Cunningham and CAU was not limited to the hours Penny was at school. When crisis moments would occur at home, Phyllis leaned on staff to help her manage these situations and that support was invaluable to her. As Penny began to flourish emotionally, mentally and academically at CIRCLE, Phyllis’s own anxious feelings also began to ease. “Thank you for everything you’ve ever done for me and Penny,” Phyllis said. “I can never repay you for your services, but please know, we walk away with great love and respect for CIRCLE Academy. You’ve been my only family and I say goodbye with tears.... I love you all.” Mr. Hogue continues to work with Phyllis to identify resources for Penny, so she can continue a track for success. Because that’s just what family does. Our CIRCLE Academy Education Programs in Urbana and Rossville served 157 students from 18 school districts. Learn more: I Ten-year-old Sally has been having trouble making friends in school as past trauma has made it difficult for her to relate to other children in a developmentally appropriate manner. Sometimes, she would lash out at others in an attempt to protect herself. Margo Spencer, her HopeSprings therapist, works with Sally once a week and utilizes art and play-based therapeutic approaches to engage Sally in helping her to understand and communicate her emotions while processing traumatic events in a safe environment. Sally has a much easier time processing these things through artistic expression and the physical act of creating art has helped her to regulate her emotions more effectively. In one meeting, Margo engaged Sally in an activity where she was asked to make an animal out of Play-Doh that represented her and her growth over the past year. Sally constructed a red rattlesnake. The front end of the snake has sharp teeth and breathes fire because that is how she has protected herself in the past. The rattler on the snake is made of hearts because she is learning that she can protect herself without hurting others by using the self-soothing techniques and coping mechanisms they have practiced in therapy sessions. and Express

[ hope is RISING through our community-based programs ] [ 11 ] This year’s Mother’s Day was extra special for Ivy* for a couple of reasons. First, it was her first as a mom of two children, and second, she celebrated the day with her children in her very own apartment. Just a short time before, Ivy could never have imagined she would be in the position she is today but thanks to Cunningham’s Runaway and Homeless Youth (RHY) Services program, she is. “Ivy is very grateful to be experiencing a lot of firsts,” Chalaine, RHY Program Coordinator, said. “She has a good support system which is helping her to obtain the things she wants to do to be able to take care of herself and her children.” Five months before, shortly after the birth of her second child, Ivy found herself homeless. No longer welcome in her mother’s home, she stayed with her grandmother but that was only a temporary solution. While the parenting program Ivy participated in helped her in many ways, housing wasn’t one of them and that’s when she was referred to Cunningham’s RHY program. RHY provided Ivy and her children emergency shelter and since then, she has made great strides while receiving case management services. The RHY team helped Ivy obtain a job, gave her referrals for childcare and assisted her with getting mainstream benefits through the Illinois Department of Human Services. She now has SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits coming, a LINK card, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) cash assistance and a medical card. Because of RHY’s assistance with emergency shelter, she was able to purchase her very first car with the money she saved. With a housing voucher through the Housing Authority, she now has stable housing and is ready to start the process to obtain her GED through Parkland. “For being very young, because she is just 18 years old, Ivy is very, very motivated, a great advocate for herself and a very good mom,” Chalaine said. Ivy continues to participate in a teen parenting program along with having a mentor. She remains in RHY’s outreach services and is working on budgeting and independent living skills. After receiving numerous donations through Cunningham Children’s Home and her parenting program, she was able to get her apartment set up with furniture and household items and is beyond grateful as she continues to move forward working towards her goals. “When you have somebody who is driven, willing to better themselves and accept our help, it makes our job so fulfilling,” Chalaine said. “As a team, we are helping to change Ivy’s life and her children’s lives. We are helping her move forward and become a more productive parent who can care for herself and her children. And that makes us feel good.” ORGANIZATIONS AND BUSINESSES DONORS July 1, 2021 - June 30, 2022 4xFools AFSCME Subchapter 88 Retirees Alpha Lit, Central Illinois Alpha Nu Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Alpha Phi Omega Altrusa International American Endowment Foundation American Legion Auxiliary 19th District American Lutheran Church Quilting Group Applied Pavement Technology Armstrong Township High School Assurance Agency Atlanta Quilt Corner Bacon & Van Buskirk Glass Company BarTech Group, Inc. [ 12 ] Cunningham’s signature fundraiser, the annual Festival of Quilts, honors the tradition of the United Women in Faith and the quilts they, and quilters from across Illinois, have made and donated to our kids since 1895. When youth arrive at Cunningham, they are greeted with a welcome basket filled with supplies and a handmade quilt. And as youth prepare to transition to another place, this special Cunningham tradition continues as they are given a quilt, hand-picked just for them, to take as a reminder of the warmth, safety and love they found here. The two-day event is a favorite for many and attracts people of all ages from all over central Illinois and beyond. With the option to shop online, the Festival reaches avid quilters and supporters from all over the country. In 2022, Festival of Quilts raised $71,633. Since 1989, former Illini basketball great and professional player, Kendall Gill, has gone above and beyond to support Cunningham youth. In addition to making a significant gift to our Boys Group Home named in his honor and spending time with the youth who live there when he is in town, he hosts the Kendall Gill Golf Benefit each summer. Kendall is joined at the event by his wife Wendy, and sons Phoenix and Kota. With the support of committed sponsors, golfers and raffle contributors, the Benefit has raised more than $650,000 over its amazing 33 years including $47,090 in 2022. We are delighted to host events throughout the year that engage our community, provide the opportunity to share our mission, allow us to develop long-lasting relationships and, most importantly, bring hope to the the youth and families we serve. [ 13 ] Luminaries of Hope and Live Nativity—a special drive through event on our campus—has become a beautiful holiday tradition. This uplifting event brings the light of hope at Christmastime to our entire community! On two evenings during December, luminaries, representing each of the youth and families we served that year, are lit along the drive of hope on campus. We invite the community to attend but also give them the opportunity to participate by purchasing luminaries in honor or memory of special people in their lives. Luminaries of Hope is also the focus of our of Giving Tuesday campaign. In 2022, we were proud and thankful to announce total proceeds of $11,327! We are beyond grateful for the efforts to provide mattresses, sheets, and calming lotions to create restful sleep routines for our kids. The donor response to March Mattress was amazing and nearly tripled our goal with proceeds totaling $22,228! An amazing 238 people registered for the 2nd Annual Be a Hero 5K at Meadowbrook Park. We saw Wonder Woman—actually several of them. The “Man in Black” from Princess Bride made a strong appearance. Captain America was in attendance, of course. And the hundreds of other heroes at the race came in many forms. There were families, friends, pastors, co-workers, businesspeople, educators, medical professionals, college students, classmates and more. Walking, running, strolling were babies, young people and not so young people. And they ALL came together to support Cunningham! Because of their efforts, net proceeds totaled $17,676! continued [ hope is RISING through our events and campaigns ]

The Cunninghams were living in their large rural estate just outside of Urbana called “The Cedars” because of the double row of beautiful cedar trees that lined the long driveway from the road to the house. After much thought, the Cunninghams decided their legacy would be to make “The Cedars” a safe place of hope, comfort and love for orphaned and homeless children. The “Cedars Society” honors that first legacy gift of the home that has touched and changed so many lives.
