In the late 1800’s, Judge Joseph and Mary Cunningham began to ponder
their legacy to their community. The Cunninghams were living in their large
rural estate just outside of Urbana called “The Cedars” because of the
double row of beautiful cedar trees that lined the long driveway from the
road to the house. After much thought, the Cunninghams decided their
legacy would be to make “The Cedars” a safe place of hope, comfort and
love for orphaned and homeless children. The “Cedars Society” honors that
first legacy gift of the home that has touched and changed so many lives.

“When I was very young, most of my childhood heroes wore
capes, flew through the air, or picked up buildings with one
arm. They were spectacular and got a lot of attention. But as I
grew, my heroes changed, so that now I can honestly say that
anyone who does anything to help a child is a hero to me.”
