Summarizing Fiscal Year 2023 with stories of hope, financials, outcomes, donor listings and more.

IMPACT REPORT FY23 the simplicity of hope

/ THE SIMPLICITY OF HOPE / In 1968, four-year-old Ramiro Bosquez faced a challenging childhood after his mother’s death. While there are hundreds of foster care homes that provide a safe and loving environment for children, Ramiro didn’t have a positive experience, facing mistreatment and being repeatedly told he wouldn’t amount to anything. In 1978, at 14, he found comfort at Cunningham, where the absence of gates and fences allowed him to be a carefree “kid.” House parents Jim and Donna Anders and house parents Val and Michelle Vogel provided support and positive influences. Inspired, Ramiro pursued a career in the military, serving in the Army and Marine Corps with tours in Panama and the Persian Gulf. He later became a police officer, achieving several commendations and the MADD Lifesavers Award. Even with such resilience and personal success, Ramiro remains humble, attributing his accomplishments to his years at Cunningham, saying, “Cunningham was the best thing that ever happened to me.” Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) at the University of Illinois is a Professional Business Fraternity dedicated to professionalism, philanthropy, and social engagement. The memberships’ commitment to excellence is evident in their unwavering support for Cunningham Children’s Home. Four years ago, BAP’s philanthropy chair, Natalie Maguire, initiated collaboration, and despite the challenges of the pandemic, the students still found ways to make an impact, activating virtual events, fundraisers and creating care packages for Cunningham youth and staff. Over the years, their support has continued to expand, contributing to Halloween events, creating hygiene bags, organizing seeds for the greenhouse, playing board games with youth, and assisting in the development of the Hope Chest, a space on Cunningham’s campus that gives clients who are establishing stable housing a place to shop for items that can make their house a home. BAP’s professionalism extends to consultations for social media, marketing, and fundraising which benefits Cunningham’s promotional efforts. The organization has raised over $9,500 through creative initiatives providing a lasting impact on Cunningham youth, families and staff. Their dedication reflects a true commitment to excellence and the mission of Cunningham Children’s Home. ‘23 outstanding alumni “While at Cunningham, I was never judged. Through positive interactions, I was treated as if I could accomplish anything.” — Ramiro ‘23 friend of children “Seeing the Hope Chest all come together was just one of the first things we got to see from start to finish. Knowing that an hour of help made a difference in the lives of the staff and families really stood out to us.” — BAP member In FY23, 939 volunteers provided more than 3,500 hours of volunteer time.

Dear Cunningham Family, At Cunningham, hope begins here. Hope is more than just an idea; it is a guiding light leading us to create a safe haven for the youth and families we serve. The simplicity of hope embodies the belief that, through collective compassion and support, there is confidence in a brighter future. For the youth and families we serve, hope is the compass that steers them away from adversity and toward possibility. It’s the reassuring hug that replaces uncertainty with the promise of a nurturing environment. Thanks to our generous donors, dedicated volunteers, and supportive friends in the communities we serve, you help us fulfill our mission to nourish hope through effective solutions so children thrive and families flourish. It’s in the simplicity of hope, where we find the strength to make a lasting impact on those who need it most. We are grateful for the important role you play in this journey and for your consistent support, which ensures that young people and families at Cunningham can find comfort, motivation, and, above all, hope. UNITED WOMEN IN FAITH DONORS July 1, 2022 - June 30, 2023 / 4 / / THE SIMPLICITY OF HOPE / When 19-year-old Hawkins attended a KISS concert in Chicago, it fullfilled a longtime dream. Using his savings, he purchased a ticket for one of the band’s final concerts, with staff member Mr. Justin accompanying him. Despite Hawkins’ tendency for expensive requests, Justin felt this experience was worth encouraging. “I always advocated for him to be able to go to this concert because it was a goal he had identified well in advance of the event and while expensive, there was a great deal of thought put into the decision to go,” Mr. Justin said. “KISS is undeniably his favorite music to listen to and listening to music is a really important coping mechanism for Hawk when he’s trying to manage his energy, stay on task and focus on something.” The concert meant more to Hawkins than just music; it symbolized independence for him, a chance to make a decision for himself. Dealing with autism-related challenges, Hawkins recognizes the need for assistance in his transition to adulthood but sometimes struggles with the constant decision-making for him. Attending the concert and buying a ticket with his own money was a significant milestone for him. Leading up to the concert, he demonstrated maturity by making good choices and adapting to unexpected changes. Despite not getting his preferred seats or being disappointed because the shirt he wanted wasn’t available in his size, Hawkins adjusted well, showing resilience and flexibility. His dedication to maintaining the “KISS” makeup, avoiding smudges even when excited, reflected his commitment to the experience. At the venue, he admired others’ costumes and makeup, connecting with the positive energy of like-minded fans. This environment provided a unique opportunity for Hawkins to feel validated and excited alongside others. During the concert, Hawkins expressed uncontainable joy, singing along to every lyric. Justin, despite not being a fan of KISS music, cherished the experience of seeing Hawk’s enjoyment and being surrounded by such energy and enthusiasm. “Watching this experience somehow meet all of Hawk’s incredibly high expectations as he cheered his heart out made this one of my favorite concerts ever,” Mr. Justin said. “I’ll never forget it and I know he won’t either.” Albion First UWFaith Aledo UWFaith Altamont First UWFaith Anna UWFaith Arcola UWFaith Argenta UWFaith Arthur UWFaith (Crafty Crafters) Athens UWFaith Atlanta UWFaith Barry UWFaith Belleville Signal Hill UWFaith Belleville Union UWFaith Ruth Circle Bellflower UWFaith continued “It was great to see Hawk feeling excited but also getting positive energy back from the people he spoke to because everyone there was so pumped up.” — Mr. Justin unforgettable Benld UWFaith Bismarck UWFaith Blandinsville UWFaith Bloomington Park UWFaith Bloomington Wesley UWFaith Blue Mound UWFaith Bonfield Evangelical UWFaith Boulder UWFaith Bradford Boyd’s Grove UWFaith Bradley Wesley UWFaith Bridgeport First UWFaith Broadlands UWFaith Bushnell UWFaith Cache River District UWFaith Calhoun Ebenezer UWFaith Camargo UWFaith Cambridge UWFaith Camp Point UWFaith Canton Shield’s Chapel UWFaith Carlinville Sarah Circle UWFaith Carlinville UWFaith Carrier Mills UWFaith Carterville UWFaith Caseyville UWFaith Laurel Circle Catlin UWFaith Cedar Grove UWFaith Cerro Gordo UWFaith Champaign Faith UWFaith Champaign First UWFaith Champaign Mt. / 5 / / THE SIMPLICITY OF HOPE / Every Wednesday after school, students at the Noel Education Center head to the chapel at the Spiritual Life Center for choir practice. The desire to create a musical community remains strong and our young people enjoy the chance to perform at events like the annual Board Day luncheon and the residential Christmas program. Even though most choir members are older, when 9-year-old Samuel joined the choir, he was welcomed with open arms. The kids showed understanding and compassion toward Samuel, who was a bit intimidated at first. Inclusivity is a big part of the choir as connections and friendships grow beyond the chapel. The time spent in weekly choir is purposeful. Starting with breathing exercises, students warm up their voices, practice songs, and end with a prayer. Ashley, the music therapist, says this ritual helps set expectations and gives structure to the group. All students have the choice to join the choir, regardless of their music background. There are no auditions, but respect for oneself and others in the choir is required. It’s a vulnerable time for teenagers as they perform in front of their peers, and everyone should feel comfortable. Through the combination of choice, ritual structure and respect, students are not only learning songs but also developing leadership skills. Singing in the choir helps students feel more confident, and they eagerly invite their peers to join in choir or weekly services. It is also a form of music therapy that reduces anxiety and stress, promoting healing and growth for the youth as they make beautiful music. / 6 / / THE SIMPLICITY OF HOPE / Usually, when a large group of our youth gather in the Spiritual Life Center chapel for an activity, the noise level is quite high. But one afternoon during winter break, an enthusiastic hush filled the room as youth from Cunningham, and six other child welfare agencies from the state of Illinois, came together to participate in the first ever Illinois Interagency Athletic Association (IIAA) Chess Tournament. The interest in chess at Cunningham surged after a volunteer shared his passion for the game. And the idea for the tournament came up when a Cunningham youth chess enthusiast expressed interest in participating in a community chess event. Ms. Jill, the lead specialist for Special Therapies at Cunningham, discussed the idea with other agencies at an IIAA coaches meeting and interest was high. Deiondre, a Cunningham youth who usually struggled in social settings, particularly with large groups, surprised everyone. Despite initial nervousness, he excelled in the tournament, winning all three matches, and securing the first-place spot in his “beginners” bracket. His positive interaction with peers, focus and openness to feedback showcased significant growth. Participants self-identified as beginners or intermediate players and were placed in brackets. “Chess expert judges” volunteered to match players of similar levels, and three official rounds were played, each capped at 20 minutes. Known for enhancing problem-solving, thinking, and social skills, chess also provides therapeutic benefits such as improving memory, focus, perspective, creativity, planning skills and self-awareness. With the success of the tournament, Special Therapies aims to offer more opportunities for youth to participate in community tournaments. In the meantime, as Deiondre and his peers continue to practice and learn, the experience of the tournament remains a cool and positive memory. The tournament had a very low-key vibe for having 30 teens plus staff and volunteers all socializing in the chapel at the same time. The mood was good, low-energy, calm and well-regulated.” — Ms. Jill In FY23, 9 students across our three education programs celebrated high school graduations and two young adults in our RHY Program completed their high school education.

The Lunch of Champions program, in our Gerber Education Program, is designed to address the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) needs of our students. Each month, the district character trait is highlighted through programming and bulletin boards. At the end of the month, staff select middle school and high school students who exemplified that trait and they are honored and celebrated with a special lunch where they receive a certificate, prizes and pizza! The character trait for September was “Readiness.” Students were selected for exhibiting qualities of readiness such as being prepared for class and other activities and expectations. / 7 / / THE SIMPLICITY OF HOPE / Petersburg UWFaith Port Byron Church of the Cross UWFaith Port Byron First UWFaith Powers UWFaith Preemption UWFaith Quincy Union UWFaith Quincy Vermont Street UWFaith Ransom UWFaith Roanoke UWFaith Robinson Otterbein UWFaith Rochester UWFaith Roseville UWFaith - Mary Circle Rosiclare UWFaith Rossville UWFaith Rural UWFaith Rushville First UWFaith Salem Grace UWFaith Sangamon River District UWFaith San Jose UWFaith Saunemin UWFaith Savoy UWFaith Saybrook Wesbein UWFaith Sheffield Fairview UWFaith Sheffield UWFaith Shelbyville First UWFaith Shelbyville Fourth Street UWFaith Sherman UWFaith Spoon River District UWFaith Springfield First UWFaith Springfield Kumler UWFaith Springfield Laurel UWFaith Steward UWFaith Streator First UWFaith Stronghurst UWFaith Sullivan UWFaith Sumner Beulah UWFaith Swan Creek UWFaith Tolono UWFaith Tonica UWFaith Toulon UWFaith Tremont UWFaith Trenton UWFaith Troy UWFaith Tuscola UWFaith United Women in Faith Illinois Great Rivers Conference United Women in Faith Northern Illinois Conference Urbana Countryside UWFaith Urbana Wesley UWFaith Vermilion River District UWFaith Villa Grove UWFaith Virden/Girard UWFaith Walnut Grove UMC Evening Stars Watseka UWFaith Watson UWFaith Weldon UWFaith Westfield UWFaith White Chapel UWFaith Williamsfield UWFaith Williamsville UWFaith After a basketball victory in its first game of the season, our residential basketball team gathered for practice in preparation for the next game. During the game, our team took an early lead, but soon, the focus shifted from scoring to playing together and having fun. Nico, a veteran player, noticed a player on the other team who was quite eager for the ball. Nico twice “passed” her the ball, allowing her to score and experience joy. Nico later revealed he intentionally missed a layup to prioritize making someone else feel good, which marked significant personal growth for him. Before coming to Cunningham, Nico had a tumultuous life, but he has received specialized counseling, rebuilt healthy relationships and learned to care for others. Jill, the lead specialist for our Special Therapies, was proud of the spontaneous adjustments Nico and other players made in the game which showcased their compassion, sportsmanship and camaraderie. winning “I’ve grown into a person I know can help others even if I’m feeling down. / 8 / / THE SIMPLICITY OF HOPE / In the fall, our CIRCLE Academy Vermilion (CAV), located in Rossville, initiated a running club for students interested in running during PE class. With six students and two staff members calling themselves the “CAV Rad Runners,” the club runs carefully planned routes three times a week in the community. The running club goes beyond physical exercise, teaching students stretching, proper breathing, running form, road safety, and the importance of healthy choices. Students also develop social skills by supporting each other. It didn’t take long for the club to capture the attention of other students who began expressing interest in joining. Jaxx even practiced running extra laps in PE class to show just how serious he was in becoming a member of the CAV Rad Runners. The enthusiasm for the running club even spread to the Rossville community, where truckers, gardeners and nearby businesses express support during the runs. 139 students from 20 school districts were served by CIRCLE Academy in FY23. Living with her mother and stepfather, Tiffany faced blame, unjust punishment, and emotional distress. Moving away brought some relief, but lingering trauma led to overwhelming anxiety in crowded places, school, and around her stepfather’s children. Tiffany struggled with sleep, hygiene and persistent fears. Allie, her therapist at HopeSprings, noticed Tiffany’s avoidance of discussing feelings but found success in play therapy. Using toys in the sensory room, Tiffany expressed her wishes for a “dream family.” Through play, Tiffany revealed her fears associated with her stepfather, symbolized by a dinosaur trying to tear the family apart. Sessions helped Tiffany confront anxiety and build courage, fostering faith in her and her mother’s ability to protect each other. She now attends school regularly, maintains personal hygiene, and addresses her sleep anxiety. Play therapy enabled Tiffany to verbalize her emotions and has transitioned from weekly to biweekly sessions, showcasing significant progress in her journey toward feeling loved and cared for again. / THE SIMPLICITY OF HOPE / Whether it’s individual or family sessions or services provided in our community, HopeSprings can help provide healing. They gain small business strategies, financial literacy, and work habits while enjoying the marketing aspect. The students create unique drinks, promotions, and weekly specials, actively participating in the business’s success. Seventeen-year-old Kiera created the “Double OK!,” a cold brew with white chocolate, vanilla, caramel foam and a caramel drizzle. As a marketing effort, she made a video encouraging staff to try it. Monthly planning meetings involve students, staff, and professionals like Director of Advancement Ginger Mills and Marketing Specialist Tina Dechausay. Together, they determine monthly specials, with students contributing artwork for the “weekly special” email sent agency-wide each Monday. In addition to the weekly specials, the coffee shop incorporates a punch card system, rewarding customers with a free drink after purchasing 10. With a real coffee shop feel, students quickly adapted to machine operations, but the most significant growth is seen in their customer service skills. Vocational Coordinator Renee notes the transformation from treating familiar faces casually to providing consistent, excellent customer service to all. Confidence and poise grew, shifing from weariness during rushes to excitement. Mason enjoys the technical aspects, while Kiera finds joy in simply seeing people smile. Ms. Bonnie’s Cup of Hope not only serves coffee but also brews skills and confidence in the students, making it a meaningful part of their learning journey. marketing for hope “I’ve learned that marketing is really important but hard. We don’t always know if we are going to have slow days or rush days. Marketing helps us balance that and brings more people in to Cup of Hope.” — Kiera, vocational options student At Cup of Hope, 17 students were employed, 37 collective hours of training were completed and 240 hours were logged, giving youth real-world work experience.

In 1895, Judge Joseph and Mary Cunningham deeded their home and 15 acres to the Women of the Methodist Episcopal Church, now the United Women in Faith. This large rural estate, located just outside of Urbana, was called “The Cedars” because of the double row of beautiful cedar trees that lined the long driveway from the road to the house and was given with the understanding that it would provide a safe and nurturing environment for children in need. Judge Cunningham wrote in his personal journal: “May God’s blessing go with this gift, and may it be the means of doing much good.” Initially, Cunningham was a safe home for children without parents or those unable to care for them. Over time, Cunningham has expanded its services to accommodate changing needs, including emotional, behavioral and special educational challenges.
