ENGLISH IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS

These days English has become a vital requirement for employers and employees alike,
not just in Saudi Arabia but across the world. English is the medium of global
communication - for business, of course, but for so much else as well. Anyone wanting to
succeed in today’s global village who does not have English might not have a chance. A
number of countries have decided to switch their education system to English so as to
make their economies more competitive in future, Malaysia being a notable case. Saudi
Arabia is following that route, at least in part. The number of private secondary schools
teaching in English is increasing, mainly to meet parents’ demand. At the tertiary level,
the new flagship university, KAUST, is an entirely English-language institution. At other
universities many subjects, such as medicine, engineering, IT, economics and business
studies, are taught in English. Other subjects will join the list. Saudis wanting to study
them have to have English. There is no alternative. Moreover, in a country that wants to
create a high-skilled workforce able to compete in the world, it is clear that the need for
English is only going to grow.

The sooner, therefore, we start to be exposed to English the better, but there are other
factors which make language acquisition much easier for young Saudis which can be
addressed at any stage.

During many discussions with teaching professionals with long Saudi experience, two
factors which impede locals acquiring another language are a lack of reading and writing
skills in Arabic and a very narrow band of general knowledge. As anybody learns a
second language, they use their knowledge of their native language as a reference base.
If this base is weak, it is more difficult for the student to make progress. Of course, there
are always exceptions to the rule.

Again, students here have very limited general knowledge. As they read in English, they
regularly read topics about which they have not the vaguest idea in their own language.
They are not just confronted with new vocabulary, but with concepts, ideas and facts of
which they are totally ignorant. This is very discouraging for the student.

Parents can provide a good foundation for learning by encouraging children to read in
Arabic at an early age. First start by reading to them and then encourage them to read
books. Visit the many good bookshops which are around the Kingdom. Let your children
browse through the books. Curtail the TV and the computer games at home. The sooner
children are exposed to reading the better. Children have a lively curiosity and this can
be used to encourage them to read. Picture encyclopedias, general knowledge books,
facts and figures, fairy stories can be used as a “soft” introduction to the written word. It
is an undisputed fact that once children have acquired the habit of reading, they never
lose it.

Once your children have acquired the habit of reading, they will find all subjects easier,
as they have a better ability to filter information. Their knowledge of the world and all it

contains will be increased. Not only will they be able to acquire another language more
easily, but their general studies will improve.

Language acquisition is a gradual process so it is a good idea to start the process early
and in a relaxed environment. If children start learning a language at an early age, they
gain confidence and overcome that shyness aspect that they develop later when learning
a language. Again, a lot rests with parents, spend a little time daily or weekly reading to
your children — 10 or 15 minutes a day can make a great difference to your children’s
future.

Many parents realize the importance of English for their children’s future and set about
taking steps to improve their children’s skills. English is more and more becoming the
medium of instruction in Saudi third level education. Saudi students need to have an
excellent grasp to attend lectures etc. Parents often want their children to achieve a good
score in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). As a good score in TOEFL (or
IELTS) allows students to enter foreign academic institutions or qualify for the King
Abdullah Scholarship Program, this is a very understandable desire. Most of the students
who want to sit TOEFL have just come from high school and the TOEFL and IELTS tests
are totally different from any examination they have previously taken. It is considerably
longer (over 2 hours) and the students cannot memorize for the tests as they have been
used to doing. Students need to lengthen their concentration span to match the tests.
These tests require a good knowledge of English grammar, and strong skills in listening,
reading, writing and speaking. Too often students who come to prepare for TOEFL or
IELTS have a totally inadequate knowledge of English. This underlies the importance of
an early start for children as the level of skills required for international tests (such as
TOEFL and IELTS) cannot be achieved with frantic and extended studying for a month
— the last minute sweating syndrome.

The educational system from which they have come that heavily relies on memorization
leaves their study skills woefully short of what is required in these tests. An ability to skim
and scan texts, to think laterally, and to understand inference is essential to score well.
All these skills can be acquired over time, and good reading habits acquired early can go
along the way to improve a student’s score in TOEFL or IELTS.

Apart from that, there are many opportunities for people with English at degree level,
because its value is recognized in business and professions. So, I am so pleased to
introduce some tips for international students regarding learning English language.

First, don’t memorize individual words, but study and memorize phrases and statements.

Second, read articles, conversations, stories and try to write new statements and
imagine stories that simulate the stories you red before.

Third, Download videos, films, conversations and repeatedly listen to them (listen for
more than 20 times)

Fourth, try to repeat what the native speaker said during the conversation.

Fifth, study the words and phrases that are familiar and repeatedly used. This requires
listening to movies, CNN, BBC, WWE, Euro news agencies.

Sixth, focus on pronunciation, be patient to listen conversations several times, try to
repeat what do you hear, and sometimes try to write the difficult idioms that native
speakers used.

Fortunately, with the introduction of internet, students find easy access to websites in this
respect, and download hundreds of articles, stories, conversations that related to our life
aspects.

For the business school, English Language is the PILLAR of it. In addition, our business
school adopts four English Language courses focusing on business communication
skills. It also supports and motivates students to get part of learning English language
programs that conducted outside the university. However, students who face significant
problems in English Language, they fail to get the required score, and then they are
dismissed.

To conclude, listening and speaking are the keys to get proficient in English language.
So, keep practice, don’t be frustrated. Hardworking will lead to success.
