INTRODUCTION

Obesity is a complex disease involving an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity
isn't just a cosmetic concern. It's a medical problem that increases the risk of other
diseases and health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure
and certain cancers.
There are many reasons why some people have difficulty losing weight. Usually,
obesity results from inherited, physiological and environmental factors, combined
with diet, physical activity and exercise choices.

Symptoms of obesity among students are not something new. Studies show a large
number of school students are at risk for becoming obese. One’s eating style and
daily lifestyle are very important. A good and balanced eating style includes eating
habits according to the recommended food pyramid as well as adhering to schedules
such as breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Consumption of nutritious and quality food greatly influences the lifestyle of
students. According to Prof. Dr. Mohd Nasir Hashim (1992), food intake that includes
the groups of vitamins, carbohydrates, proteins and iron will supply a source of
energy and help build bones and muscles. Vitamins are able to help prevent various
diseases and help the metabolic process in the body. Healthy eating habits are very
important to prevent chronic diseases because eating nutritious food can improve
mental and physical ability.

SCIENCE PROJECT REPORT

Obesity problems among SMKKJ students were found to be related to the
consumption of processed and crunchy foods. Although obesity is not a contagious
suspect, if not controlled, then it is not impossible that the percentage of SMKKJ
students who face obesity will increase.

This project aims to prevent and improve the unlikeliness of SMKKJ students to
face obesity problems. Other than that, it is found that most of the students takes in
processed and crunchy food. Out of the 20 respondents, all of them consumes
processed food and only 2 of the students does not consume crunchy food.

To implement this project, we used the observation and questionnaire method.
Using the observation method, we tested the physical state of the students. For the
questionnaire method, we handed out paper forms to collect data such as the
student's height and weight. We roamed around the school going to various classes
ranging from Form 1, Form 2 and Form 3 classes.

Results of Obesity Problems in SMK Khir Johari

The pie chart above shows the results for the obesity problem in SMKKJ. In
conclusion, 70% of students have the ideal body weight. 15% of students are
overweight and 5% of students are underweight. 10% of the students faces obesity.
Results also shows that most of the students consume a lot of processed food and
crunchy food in a week. Only a small number of students control their food intake.

Although obesity is not a major problem among respondents in SMKKJ, all parties
must always be sensitive and find ways to deal with this problem. This is because
obesity is associated with fat production and heart disease. Apart from that, obesity
among students is also associated with the intake of processed and crunchy food.
Processed food is foods that have preservatives to last longer. They are also frozen
and mixed with fats or oils and other ingredients. Crunchy foods are foods that are
not good for body health because crunchy foods contain excessive sugar and salt
content, dyes, ingredients, preservatives, oils and fats.

There are certain methods that can be taken to prevent obesity among students.
One of the methods is taking food according to the balanced diet.

10

A balanced diet refers to a nutrition that contains all seven classes of food which is
carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, mineral salts, fibre and water in the right
amount and in balanced quantities according to a person's needs so that optimum
health can be maintained. A balanced diet is the composition of daily intake with the
type and amount of nutrients in accordance with the needs of the body. Fulfillment of
this nutritional intake must also pay attention to the principles of food diversity,
physical activity, clean living behavior, and maintaining a normal weight to prevent
nutritional problems.

A balanced diet can provide and meet a person's energy needs to carry out all
daily activities and physiological and metabolic processes of the body. A person’s
energy needs depends on a few factors in our life which is body size, age, work,
gender, state of health and climate.

For body size, people who are small in body size have a larger total surface area
per solid than people with large bodies. The rate of heat loss is faster for people of
small body size. Therefore, people who are small need more energy per gram of
body weight than people who are large. For age, growing children and adolescents
require more energy than adults. The basic metabolic rate is higher at the rapid
growth stage. For the work factor, a person who does more strenuous and active
work requires more energy. For example, farmers, labourers and fishermen.

For gender, adult men needs more energy than adult women. Men's basic
metabolic rate is also higher than women's. For state of health, people who are sick
requires food that is suitable to their health condition. Lastly, for climate, individuals
living in cold climates requires more energy to maintain their body temperature
compared to individuals living in tropical climates.

In conclusion, obesity is not a disease that is considered inherited. With the right
act in daily life and the correct food intake, obesity problems can be prevented
among school students.
