1.0 About the Manual
1.1 What is ‘Environmental Graphic Design’ ?
Environmental graphic design is use graphic, colour, art, lighting and
many other element to design the environment of a space that can
giving users a good experience. A good EGD can let users enjoy in the
space and will come again.
EGD has three key activites which are wayfinding, interpretive and
placemaking. Based on my understanding, wayfinding is to guide user
where they are and what is direction if they want to go somewhere such
as signage. Interpretive is the information, backgound, history and so on
of the space and for user to look and read. For example museum, zoo,
garden will have a lot. Placemaking is more like art that apply on wall,
ground and so on.
1.2 The Purpose of This Manual
Plaza Sentosa was started thier business mang years ago but their EGD
does not have improve and strong identity. There have many new
shopping mall was opened and their EGD have give users a good
experience. That is why those shopping mall have more people to visit
so i choose Plaza Sentosa to redesign their EGD for make a changes.
The concept of the new EGD is using geometric shape to form the
pictogram and signages. The colours are same with the mall building so
can related together and also have playful and lively feeling. The
lauguage on the signage only in English.
2.0 Introduction of Plaza Sentosa
2.1 Location
Plaza Sentosa located at Taman Sentosa. There are many row of shops
around it. Apart from shops, there are also have residential area. Some
of residents went to Plaza Sentosa to buy something by walking.
Jalan Sutera, Taman Sentosa, 80150 Johor Bahru, Johor

Komplex, has its name changed after its acquisition by Perduren (M) Bhd

tenant is The Store Corporation Bhd.
The mall refurbish become Plaza Sentosa in 2011, it called The Store
before.

3.0 Research and Analysis of Plaza Sentosa
3.1 Research method and process
I went to Plaza Sentosa to look for its EGD and take some photos. I also
observed the users in this space such as what age group are they, their
activity, the reason that they come to the space and so on. The next
method is I do its background research in online.
Beside, I ask some people who went to Plaza Sentosa before and
identified the problems of its EGD.

3.2 Existing EGD conditions-Key insights
Weak identity
The EGD of the space are weak identity because there have few
signage are not in a same series. The colour and concept of signages
are different with the design of the mall. There also are not much
placemaking design.
3.2 Existing EGD conditions-Key insights P1
Signage mistake
Second, some signage have mistake. For example, the
direction have lift but the signage does not show the
icon of lift. It also have the signage that does not
updated after have new changes. Some signage was
confused and do not understand of it.
For example, P1 the signage have the floor name but
does not have any information on it, it was make me
confused what is the use of it. Signage in P2 have
“Children World” but the children world had been
demolished few years ago. In P3, right side have lift but
it never have the lift icon show at the signage.

3.2 Existing EGD conditions-Key insights
Lack of Signage
Most of the signage in Plaza Sentosa is hanging signage. It does not
have standing signage like others shopping mall. It also does not has
lift signage and standing signage that for view the shop and area in
the mall. Furthemore, there are does not have prohibition signs for
remind users.
3.3 Design objective and solution
Design objective
To let the mall have a Let users can be easier
series of signage, to understand the
enhance its identity direction they are going
The first solution is to design unfied signage by using the colour and
graphic of the mall. Placemaking design also add some in the mall.
Second, correct the wrong information of the signage. Make sure the
direction and location of signage present are correct. Some signage are
missing so is necessary to fill in.
Lastly, add a signage at main entrance for user to view all the shop and
area in the mall and add lift signage so user can know which floor they
are and view the important area of every floor. Prohibition signs also
need to add for remind user what they cannot do in the mall.

6.0 Graphic System and Standards
6.1 Design Concept and Moodboard
My design concept is use geometric shapes to form the pictogram and
the shape of signage. It will give people more playful and lively feeling.
The mall building look colourful and fun but inside are boring so this is
the reason I choose this concept.
6.2 Typography system and size requirements
This font is for use in the text in signage. The reason I choose this font is
it looks like form by geomactric shape which can related with the
design concept.

8.0 Summary and conclusion
In conclusion, those signage will help the space be more interesting. The
addition signage which are lift signage, ground map signage and
parking signage can let user know the specifed place at each floor or
area clearly.
Overall, I have learn a lot in this project. For example, to measuring the
size of the signage and the text or pictogram inside, design the
pictogram that can understand by using geometric shapes. If I have
more time, I will do more detail of the signage like the distance between
user and signage to deside the text and icon’s size. I also will do more
placemaking on the wall in the mall. Is was a bit pity but I still satisfied
with my work, at least I have work hard on it.
