CHILI COOK-OFF, PARADE AND PEOPLE’S
CHOICE WINNERS ANNOUNCED IN
PETROLIA!

At the final meeting for 2016 of Petrolia Town Council tonight, the winners of this year’s Chili
Cook-Off and Parade Floats were presented with certificates and trophies to commemorate the
occasion.

The annual Chili Cook-Off has become a heated battle with community groups all vying for the
famous chili pot trophy. This year’s participants at the December 2 event, included The Rotary
Club of Petrolia, The Petrolia Lions, The Lambton Central Petrolia Optimist Club, the Community
Services Committee, Petrolia Legion Branch 216, and newcomer Petrolia Heritage Committee.

A team of six anonymous residents were the judges for this year’s Cook-Off. It was unanimously
decided that the coveted Chili Pot for first place be awarded to newcomer, The Petrolia Heritage
Committee’s chili. As it was “…delicious, really well balanced and not too hot!” The second-place
award, known as The Silver Fork went to The Rotary Club of Petrolia. “I’m already looking
forward to next year!” said Dave Menzies, Director of Community Services.

New to Christmas in the Park is the addition of music and dancing lights that are on display nightly
from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. in Victoria Park.

Petrolia’s annual Santa Claus parade took place on December 3, and a pair of secret judges
decided the top three floats in the following categories: Community, Commercial, and School Age.
They then went on to choose the Best Overall Float. Representatives from many of the groups
were in Council Chambers to accept their ribbons and certificates.

The winners were as follows:

1st Place Community – Lambton Central Petrolia Optimist Club
2nd Place Community – Petrolia Lion’s Club
3rd Place Community – First Petrolia Scouts

1st Place Commercial – Concrete Systems
2nd Place Commercial – U.A.W. Waterville TG
3rd Place Commercial – The Oil Heritage District Community Centre

1st Place School Age – Petrolia and District Skating Club
2nd Place School Age – Kiddies Korner Co-op Nursery School
2nd Place School Age – Petrolia Minor Hockey Association – Bantam AE

Team
ADMIN3ISrdTPRlaAcTeIOSNchool Age– First Petrolia Girl Guides

Best Overall Float was awarded to Concrete Systems for their spirit, and for their attention to the
“Petrolia Proud” theme.

For the first time, the town’s Facebook page held a “People’s Choice” voting contest to determine
the fan favourite by adding up the number of “likes” for each float. It was a close race, and two
floats had numbers so close they were each awarded the “People’s Choice” certificate for 2016.
The winning groups were: The Western Ontario Outlaws (Extreme Lawntractor Racing) and The
Petrolia and District Skating Club.

The Community Services Department would like to thank the more than 50 parade float entries,
and The Colts Drumline, The Tomato Soup Band, The Port Huron Northern Band, and the
Canadian Cowgirls, Mustard’s Last Stand, and all the volunteers that made the weekend of
