Name of artist: Gilat Ben-Dor Location of artist: Phoenix (Scottsdale), Arizona Artist website: www.gilatbendor.com Instagram: @gilatbendor, @gilatbendorjudaica (for Judaic art) Having grown up between Israel and the US, as well as having lived in Italy and Japan, Gilat Ben-Dor has been an avid collector of memories from distant lands. This visual history, along with her Judaic roots, combine in Ben-Dor’s mind to form a rich and vivid terrain which she translates into tangible imagery. Ben-Dor intuitively reaches for lush colors, opulent textures, metallic accents, and vibrant portrayals of fiora and fauna. She often repeats certain elements across her works, as expressions of personal symbolism from her inner world. These portrayals include pomegranates, birds (especially peacocks), cypress trees, celestial bodies, and architectural elements with a fiavor of Old Jerusalem, Jaffa, and Akko (Acre). Ben-Dor’s intention is that this ornamental aesthetic invokes joy, passion, and peaceful delight – a version of Tikkun Olam, of sorts – against the sobering heaviness we often encounter in our current world. Gilat Ben-Dor received her BA in Fine Arts/Art History from Brandeis University, and studied at L’Istituto Lorenzo de Medici in Florence, Italy. Ben-Dor has authored three books about creativity and tending to the multi-passionate soul. She lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with her husband.

Does the Jewish religion influence the  approach you take to your art ? If so how ? My Jewish identity directly influences my art, even when creating secular subjects, because my Jewish mind, soul, and culture converge and allow me to be receptive to divine nudges towards my creative ideas. I strive to create with two primary mitzvot, or Jewish commandments, in mind: Hiddur Mitzvah, which is the commandment to create or utilize ritual objects that are deliberately beautiful; and Tikkun Olam, the commandment to contribute to repairing the world, one individual at a time, through our own unique strengths and efforts. These are some ways I attempt to give back to the community through my creative endeavors.

Name of art piece: Jerusalem Melody Medium: Watercolor and India ink on cold-press watercolor paper Size of art piece: This piece is matted and framed, approx. 16”x20” (Unframed: 11”x15”). Piece available for sale as well as fine art prints Jerusalem Melody is an ode to the plethora of songs and poems written about the golden city that lives in our hearts. I was particularly inspired by the celebrated song, Yerushalayim Shel Zahav (Jerusalem of Gold), written by Israeli composer Naomi Shemer in 1967, in which she compares us to violins as instruments of expression of our love for Jerusalem. Hence, the violin motif at the center of this piece, surrounded by my signature pomegranates and roses, and a foundation of piano keys to echo the musical theme.

Name of artist: Esther shulimovich Location of artist: Brooklyn, NY Instagram: @e_shulimo I always knew I wanted to be like my mom. I remember watching intently as she drew her sketches at the kitchen table. And I remember thinking I wanted to be just like her. She used to tell me her inspiration was also from early childhood when she sat on her grandfather's lap as he sketched the teapot on the kitchen table. Art is something that has been in my family for generations. As far back as 6 generations, we still have record of my great (x6) grandfather as an orphan who would sell his paintings for a living in Warsaw. Creating is in my blood and I have a great drive and passion to develop and express it. I use any medium or platform that can help me be expressive. I paint whatever I am compelled to create at that moment. I gain inspiration through the little things and random moments in nature. I have sold a couple of pieces already and I'm definitely interested in creating and catering to a specific need of a client. Whether it be for a bedroom, study or workplace. I make portraits, landscapes and even a beautiful abstract design. For example, right now I am working on an anniversary present for a client. A beautiful portrait painting of the couple on their wedding day. (Hopefully to be posted on my Instagram in the near future) I do paint religious art but Im not constricted to it. I have made paintings of rabbis before but it's not necessarily a huge part of my inspiration.

Name of artist: Clare Fog Location of artist: Rome, Italy Artist website: http://www.clearfogfilms.com/ Instagram: @nettagnome Clare Fog is an artist originally from Pennsylvania, now based in Rome, Italy. Upon graduating with a B.F.A. in Theatre in Pittsburgh, she spent several years in Los Angeles working in film & television. She then received a Master's in Film Production from the Kinoeyes European Movie Master's in Portugal, Estonia, in Scotland. As a fine artist, she works primarily with encaustic medium using home produced beeswax and as a weaver with home produced angora wool. Her forthcoming Youtube series "Netta the Gnome" teaches young children about sustainable permaculture and art inspired by nature. Does the Jewish religion influence the  approach you take to your art ? If so how ? Absolutely. Jewish religion influences not only the subject matter and themes of my art, but also the process of how I create the art. Prayer and meditation are a part of my painting process, as finding time to dedicate to the artistic process is a sacred space for me that draws me nearer the creator. When it comes to subjects and themes, I am most drawn to Jewish historical events, and my current slate of films are centered around 14th,15th, and 18th century Jewish persecutions in Germany, Italy, and Portugal.

Name of art piece: "I'll Love You Forever, Honey" also known as "King Herod's Corpse Bride" Medium: Mixed Media: Oil on Canvas, Encaustic Beeswax Size of art piece: 70 x 50 cm Piece available for sale

This scene is inspired by Kiddushin 70b & Bava Batra 3b from the Talmud, featuring King Herod, after he mellifies the body of the young Hasmonean princess. She commits suicide after Herod kills her entire family, and it was rumored he consumated the marriage after she had been mummified. Herod kills all the Sages, apart from Bava Ben Buta, whom he tests, after pricking his eyes out with procupine quills. The Sage speaks nothing bad about the king, stating, “For a bird of the sky shall carry the sound, and that which has wings shall tell the matter”. Seeing how wise the Sage is, Herod regrets killing all the Sages and asks how he can remedy his actions. The Sage encourages him to build the temple, describing, “For the mitzva is a lamp, and the Torah is light” (Proverbs 6:23), should go and occupy himself with the light of the world, the Temple, as it is written with regard to the Temple: “And all the nations shall flow [venaharu] unto it” (Isaiah 2:2). In this painting, the princess is layered with actual beeswax and honey encaustic. The patterns of the border were inspired by the archeological floor remains found at Jerusalem’s Temple Mount and other building sites commissioned by Herod. While painting, I sometimes prop the painting against the window, so see where the light glows through the canvas. The glow emanates through the Sage, right at the light of Torah. My goal as an artist is to use Torah to continue spreading light through the world. Profits from the sale of my paintings will be used to fund the animation films I hope to complete. Currently, I am raising funds to produce a feature length stop motion film called "A Grande Onda", which could be the first animated musical film from Portugal. It tells the story of a young crypto-Jew in Portugal, who rescues a illuminated Hebrew manuscript during the time of the Great Lisbon Earthquake. Seeking private investors, and scenes from the film can be found here: https://www.sardinhaemlata.com/a-grande-onda-featurefilm

Name of artist: Chava Tziporah Nesher Location of artist: Missoula, MT - USA Instagram: @chava.nesher Having not always been a Chassidic Jew, in my decades of this life time I have always had a creative passion while experiencing the world in numerous ways. Mother of one musically creative grown son, my days now are spent in the quiet beauty of the northern Rocky Mountains of southwest Montana, sharing a life with my husband, and sharing Yiddishkeit with the numerous Jews here in bamidbar (in the wilderness), after living in the urban shtetl of Crown Heights in Brooklyn many a year. My creative outlets are manifold – watercolour painting, beadwork, whether on the loom or embroidered, textiles, and more including the culinary arts. Where I live now is an ongoing inspiration for my work through seeing Hashem’s own awe-inspiring creation of all that is Montana’s natural beauty, especially the blue sky. Does the Jewish religion influence the approach you take to your art ? If so how ? Being Jewish influences my art very much so as I make Judaica applying the concept of hiddur mitzvah (beautifying a mitzvah) or draw connexion between the natural landscapes profoundly attuned to ancient but always relevant words from our prayers and teachings.

Name of art piece: "A Seasonal Blessing in Montana - Ruach v'Geshem" Medium: mixed-media (watercolour/acrylic/glass beads/thread/wood) Size of art piece: approximately 36”x24” Piece available for sale A MT version for the blessing on wind and rain as in the Amidah this time of year. While the focus of the prayer is on Eretz Yisroel, here in Bamidbar we desire these blessings too so that the crops grow and forest fires not happen in the growing season. Mountain snow pack is also vital.

Name of artist: Carole Kunstadt Location of artist: West Hurley, NY, U.S.A. Artist website: https://carolekunstadt.com/ Instagram: @ckunstadt Kunstadt's works often invoke a metaphysical quality. Her works reference antique books, bookplates, music manuscripts and artifacts - deconstructing paper and text and using it in metaphorical ways. Through the exploration of the materials, history, memory and time merge in a hybrid form. Born in Boston, with a childhood in a small New England town, Kunstadt received a BFA, Hartford Art School, Hartford, CT. and continued with postgraduate studies at the Akademie der Bildenen Künste, Munich, Germany. Nine years ago she re-entered a familiar landscape as in her youth, moving to the Hudson Valley, having lived for 35 years in NYC. Does the Jewish religion influence the approach you take to your art ? If so how ? The Old Testament Series incorporates my paternal grandfather's 1904 Bible cut into triangular and cubic forms, evocative of Jung's sacred geometry. As a collective grouping, the five differing shapes offer a progression and a presentation wherein they are interrelated yet are also self-contained. The interplay of depth, volume, surface, and structure engage and intrigue while being non-specific. They stand as an inculcation of their transformation.

Name of art piece: Five Books of Moses Size of art piece: 8.5 x 11 x 4 in.(approx.) Piece available for sale Each of the Five Books of Moses has been cut down, stacked, and bound with strips of gampi tissue as individual repositories. The resulting simplicity of the singular blocks of paper and the tenuous quality of their containment contrasts sharply with the complexity of the stories recorded. The text and illustrations remain hidden with no access to the actual contents of the book. Yet the simple physical presence of these varying shapes emphasizes their literal, historical, and spiritual impact. The imprint on our consciousness, not the actual details of the stories is therefore emphasized. The now blunt cut edges of the sliced and recombined chapters often retain their gilt edging and fragments of decorative embellishments - a hint of the volume’s previously treasured and favored status. As a collective grouping, the five differing shapes offer a progression and a presentation wherein they are interrelated yet are also self-contained. The interplay of depth, volume, surface, and structure engage and intrigue while being non-specific. They stand as an inculcation of their transformation.

Name of art piece: Genesis Medium: gampi tissue, gold leaf, paper Size of art piece: 3.25 x 3.25 x 1.75 in. Name of art piece: Exodus Medium: gampi tissue and paper Size of art piece: 4 x 5.75 x 1 in. Name of art piece: Leviticus Medium: gampi tissue and paper Size of art piece: 4 x 4 x 0.75 in. Name of art piece: Kings Medium: gold leaf, nylon thread, paper Size of art piece: 4 x 4 x 1.75 in. Piece available for sale Gold-leafed strips are woven forming a fairly dense interlaced grid containing pages of Kings - evoking power, wealth and control. Knotted threads extend from the intersections, implying a continuation of influence.

Name of art piece: Prophets I ,Prophets II Medium: gampi tissue, gold leaf, paper ,nylon thread, gold leaf, paper Size of art piece: 4 x 4 x 2 in. , 4 x 4 x 1.325 in. Piece available for sale The Prophets’ surface is embellished and bound with 24 karat gold leaf, symbolically suggesting the contents which are believed to be a manifestation of God. These inspirational stories are contained in the underlying solid block of paper boldly formed yet tentatively restrained by strips of gold leaf and gampi tissue, presenting a compelling compilation. The resulting visual simplicity purposefully contrasts with the complexity of its content.

Name of art piece: Pslams Medium: gold leaf, feathers, paper. Size of art piece: 3.5 x 7.25 x 1 in. Piece available for sale Triangular in shape, Psalms is capped at its ends by gold leaf, most precious of metals. Like a sacred mountain, the triangle is associated with the ability to envision new possibilities and in this context represents inspirational lines of text such as “and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Name of art piece: Book of Esther Medium: gampi tissue, linen thread, beads, paper Size of art piece: 4.25 x 4.25 x 0.75 in. Piece available for sale The Book of Esther is bound together by interweaving strips of translucent gampi tissue. Linen threads reinforce the layers of tissue. Knots adorned with pearls, accented by the loose strands of the threads, build the textural surfaces. The simple embellishment alludes to Queen Esther's position, influence and impact. The pearls number eighteen – the numerical equivalent of life/chai.

Name of art piece: Covenant Medium: gampi tissue, linen thread, paper Size of art piece: 3 x 3.5 x 2 1/8 in. Piece available for sale The Covenant similarly is a composite of six equally-sized cut stacks of the book’s pages which are individually bound by gampi tissue, tied and knotted together with the linen binding thread from the original volume. The resulting shape has a solid yet tentative presence. The contrast implied by the consummate block of paper delicately restrained parallels and symbolizes the agreement - being bound by a solemn compact.

She has delved into the realms of dieting and eating disorders, navigating the complexities of body image and societal pressure. Currently, she is researching the Holocaust and examining the shattering rise in global antisemitism in the 21st century. Her work has been exhibited widely in the UK and Europe, as well as in Australia, Canada, Japan and USA, and can be found in public and private collections.

Name of art piece: Cut it Out Medium: Textile, silk threads, brass name plates, vintage wooden frame Process: Hand stitch Size of art piece: 57cm x 41cm x 3cm Łódź was the textile capital of Eastern Europe and known as ‘Poland’s Manchester’. It had a vibrant Jewish community who contributed significantly to its success. However, after Germany’s invasion in 1939, life changed irreparably for the Jews who, within a few months, were incarcerated in Łódź Ghetto with horrendous living conditions and forced labour. Tens of thousands perished from starvation and disease or were deported to concentration camps where they were murdered.

Name of art piece: Next Year in Jerusalem Medium: 100 small vintage wine glasses, textile, silk threads, Israeli red wine Process: Hand stitch Size of art piece: 80cm x 80cm x 15cm This artwork has been created to represent a family Passover Seder, a ritual meal to retell the story of the Israelites’ exodus from slavery in ancient Egypt. Four cups of wine are imbibed at specific times during the evening. Ten drops of wine are spilled to symbolise The Ten Plagues and the suffering of the Egyptians. At the end of the meal the words ‘Next Year in Jerusalem’ are spoken. Research was carried out to reveal how many innocent men, women and children have been killed in terror attacks in Jerusalem in the 21st century. The wine becomes a symbol of blood that has been spilled over many, many years.

Name of art piece: Pressurised Medium: German aneroid sphygmomanometer early 20th century, vintage medicine bottle, textile, silk threads Process: Hand stitch Size of art piece: 32cm x 20cm x 5cm Carl Klieneberger was born on 25 April 1876 in Frankfurt am Main, to Jewish parents who saw themselves as non-religious and assimilated into German society. He was a doctor, was married and had three daughters. He studied medicine at the universities of Berlin, Kiel and Strasbourg. From 1900 to 1901 he served as an army doctor. By 1912, he was an associate professor in Königsberg, and in the same year became director of the city hospital in Zittau, Germany, where he was a specialist in internal medicine. In 1933, he was forced to resign from this position on the basis of Section 6 of the Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service (Gesetz zur Wiederherstellung des Berufsbeamtentums) which excluded Jews and other political opponents of the Nazis from all civil service positions. Professor Klieneberger worked in private practice in the following years, during which he suffered further discrimination and antisemitic abuse from former colleagues and patients. On 1 October 1938 his licence to practice medicine was to be revoked. He committed suicide on 30 September 1938.

Name of art piece: Selection II Medium: Cotton, silk threads, 75 vintage ophthalmic lenses, 75 miniature picture frames, photographs Process: Hand stitch Size of art piece: 70cm x 62cm x 1cm (dimensions variable) Selection II focuses on the innocent people who were murdered during the Holocaust because they were Jewish. The work is an avowal of remembrance, but also a reminder that antisemitism did not cease when World War II ended. Today, antisemitism is proliferating everywhere from Europe to the United States, from the Middle East to Latin America, and Jewish people are still being killed because of their religion. On closer examination of the artwork, there are names, histories and photographs of some of those lost in the 20th and the 21st century. People who wore glasses were selected as a means of gaining a random cross-section of Jewish society which was lost to hatred. Only one person does not wear spectacles, an elderly Jewish man who was murdered in Lyon, France in 2022.

Shabbat, festivals and daily practice and learning have all have had a place in shaping my art.

Name of art piece: Freedom Medium: Oil on canvas Size of art piece: 30x30inches This whimsical piece is free and fun!

Name of art piece: Snorkeling with Turtle Medium: Oil on canvas Size of art piece: 30x40inches On numerous occasions, we have visited the island of Kauai with my in-laws. One time we chartered, a boat and captain to go to the wild Nepali coast on the north east side of the island. I love the water, but most often, I would attend to the needs of the youngest of our children, but my husband and others would be out, enjoying and experiencing what nature has to offer. This time, I, along with my oldest daughter, jumped into the water immediately (before anyone could change the plans) and took off to explore a beautiful coral reef. We were so excited to find the sea turtle. To me, it looked huge. It was truly spectacular! They are more graceful underwater than you would imagine. I love looking at this painting because it reminds me of that special day. The biblical verse in this painting is: ימ םיקולא תישע רשא םורמ דע םיקולא ךתקדצו תמא ךתרותו םלועל קדצ ךתקדצ ׳ה עישות המהבו םדא ,הבר םוהת ךתחפשמ לא יררהכ ךתקדצ ךומכ “ Your righteousness is a righteousness, everlasting, and your Torah is the truth. And Your righteousness, oh God, is on to the high heavens. You who have done great things, oh, God, who is like you? Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, Your judgments are like the vast deep waters. Both man and beast you save. Oh, Hashem” (God).

Name of art piece: Peaceful Sleep Medium: Oil on canvas Size of art piece: 24x30inches My first grandson! I took a photo of him when he was 2 weeks old while he was so peacefully sleeping in his stroller. I began this painting immediately after I returned home. The biblical verse in this painting is: לומ לא הוחתשי ליא ומכ ךדבע ץורי ךנוצר לא ךדבע ךשמ ןמחרה בהא שפנ דידי - אנא ךתבהא תלוח ישפנ םלועה ויז האנ רודה םעט לכו ףוצ תפנמ ךיתודידי ול ברעי ךרדה - םלוע תחמש הל התיהו אפרתתו קזחתת זא ףויז םענ הל תוארהב הל אנ אפר אנ לא Beloved the soul, Father who is compassionate, draw your servant to your will. May your servant run like a deer to bow toward your majesty it will be sweeter to him your friendship than the dripping of honeycomb in all flavors. Majestic one, pleasant one radiance of the universe! My soul pines for your love. Please, O God, please heal it now, by showing it the pleasantness of your radiance. Then it will be strengthened and be healed and it will have gladness eternally.

Name of art piece: Man Blowing Shofar Medium: Oil on canvas Size of art piece: 72 x 36 inches

Rosh Hashana had just passed and I was inspired. When I began this painting I was thinking of the concepts of תוכלמ ,תונורכז ,תורפוש) ,Kingship, Remembrance, and Shofar blowing) that represent the three sections of the Rosh Hashana prayer service in the Machzor. Remarkably, when I showed a photo of the painting to a Mekubal in Israel, he told me that I had captured the exact scenario that will come to be at the end of days. Moshiach (Messiah) will blow the shofar, HaShem (God) will return the Bais Hamikdash (the Temple), and everyone will recognize HaShem as the true King of the world. The biblical verse in this painting is: ,ךלוק םתעמשה םימשה ןמ . You were revealed in your cloud of glory to Your holy people to speak with them. From the heavens You made them hear Your voice and revealed Yourself to them in the clouds of purity. Moreover, the entire universe shattered before You and the creatures of creation trembled before You during Your revelation, our King, on Mount Sinai to teach Your people Torah and Commandments. You made them here the majesty of Your voice and Your holy utterances from fiery flames. Amid thunder and lightning, You were revealed to them and with the sound of the shofar, you appeared to them as it is written in Your Torah. (from the machzor of Rosh Hashana)

Name of art piece: Playful Hummingbirds Medium: Oil on canvas Size of art piece: 30x40inches I have many hummingbirds in my backyard and they sound different than most birds. Their flight patterns are also different, at times flying straight up and then shooting back down quickly. One day, as I was walking down the street hummingbirds where playing in front of a bottle brush tree. I decided to paint them with the inclusion of water. רשא הל ןק רורד תיב האצמ רופיצ םג - is painting this in verse biblical The Psalm)( Shira perek (source - יקלאו יכלמ תואבצ ׳ה ךתוחבזמ תא היחרפא התש 84:4) Even the bird finds it’s home and the free bird her nest where she had her young. O to be at your alters Hashem master of allegiance my King and my God. A loving mother bird will not return to its nest if it’s a young are missing. It will fly tirelessly to find them and bring them home. Israel in exile, without its temple and lacking the security of its mothers loving wing, is like a missing chick. It longs for God’s altar and God longs for its repentance so that he can bring it home for good.

Name of art piece: Calla Lily Sunset Medium: Oil on canvas Size of art piece: 72x60inches Driving up the California coast on Highway 1 between Big Sur and Carmel there’s a valley with water streaming into the ocean. Between the months of January and March, wild Calla lilies grow in vast fields and the sight is really spectacular. As I wandered through the Calla lilies, I found my spot and waited for the sun to set, eventually capturing this scene. The biblical verse in this painting is - .ונצראב המשנ רותה לוקו עיגה רימזה תע ץראב וארנ םינצנה “The righteous blossoms are seen in the land, the time of your song has arrived, and the voice of your guide is heard in the land.” (Song of Songs chapter 2:12)
