After a glorious May and June, unfortunately the sunshine never really returned! There is something wonderful about Autumn though! I really look forward to the air getting cooler and the evenings darker. The changing of the seasons brings so much to look forward to. It’s also the ideal time of year to switch up your recipes and stir up some delicious autumnal bowls of goodness. On pages 28 & 29 we have a Chicken and Shallot Biryani - a simple to prepare one pan oven supper. Celebrate Halloween and Bonfire Night with a comforting bowl of Pumpkin and Red Pepper soup -the perfect dish to curl up with on a cold Autumnal evening. The on-going debate surrounding the new 20 mph zones in Wales was the inspiration for Doctor Charlotte Jones focusing on “speeding “in her medical column. Charlotte discusses a variety of heart conditions, fears of fast movements, and an unusual neurological disorder called The Alice In Wonderland syndrome. Her article is on pages 6 & 7. In the last edition we featured the new Cancer Research Wales shop in Killay Precinct. The shop has proved to be a huge hit with SA2 residents since opening in August. Every penny raised is dedicated to funding cancer research in Wales for Wales. Most of you will not be aware of the excellent research happening right here on our doorstep. At Swansea University, Cancer Research Wales is funding several projects that have the potential to deliver a huge impact for patients. You can read all about the amazing work taking place on pages 14 & 15. Consumer rights campaigner Martyn James talks about why we need to seize control of our state pension. According to research over half of us have not checked on our state pension forecast. On page 34 Martyn answers many of the questions you may have on this matter. In our gardening article on pages 42 & 43 we advise on late crop gardening, growing leeks plus there are tips on buying healthy bulbs. This year’s pantomime at the Grand Theatre is Cinderella and stars dancing duo AJ and Curtis Pritchard. I have four tickets to give away for the opening matinee performance in December. All the details on how to enter the competition can be found on page 25. I hope you enjoy the read and I will be back with you in late November with the Christmas edition. 3 Lorna

6 SA2 Times OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2023 TACHYCARDIA Tachycardia is a term used to describe when the heart is “speeding” or going fast. There are many causes that can cause a tachycardia and I have listed some of the most common below: • Lifestyle factors: e.g. excess caff eine or alcohol, tiredness, smoking, exercise (it is normal for the heart rate to rise temporarily during exercise then should revert to normal range) • Anxiety and / or stress • Heart conditions e.g. conditions that have aff ected the heart muscle or conditions that aff ect the electrical conduction of the heart • Some infections e.g. some patients experience a condition called POTS aft er Covid • Overactive thyroid and other biochemical abnormalities • Some medications e.g. Clozaril, excess use of some asthma inhalers, over the counter pseudoephedrine products (used for sinus/ cough/ cold symptoms), some diet pills • Illicit substances like amphetamines, cocaine etc If you experience a fast heart rate > 100 beats / minute and the heart rate is not associated with any other symptoms and not related to temporary rises with exercise / stress / excess caff eine or drug or alcohol use then you should get it checked out by your GP. You definitely need to get it checked out urgently and ring 999 if you have the following “alarm symptoms” - heart rate persistently > 150 beats / minute and you are experiencing chest pain / severe shortness of breath. If you don’t have the “alarm symptoms” but are having a fast heart rate which is persistently > 150 beats/ minute and you have a family history of heart problems and/ or they are associated with other symptoms (e.g. giddiness or dizziness / fainting / feeling as though you are going to faint or mildly short of breath) then contact your GP surgery. WITH DR CHARLOTTE JONES MB BS (LOND), MRCGP, DFSRH. Uplands & Mumbles Surgeries. SA2 Health All the furore around the speeding limit changes gave the perfect theme for this edition’s article. SPEEDING Tachycardia is a term used to describe when the heart is “speeding” or going

SA2 Times OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2023 7 If your GP surgery is shut you can ring 111 or attend Morriston Emergency Department if you feel your symptoms cannot wait for when your GP surgery is next open. They will usually examine your heart, perform a tracing of the heart (ECG) and determine whether you need any more tests / take any medications to help manage your symptoms. If in doubt get medical help. Don’t forget... If you have a tachycardiac or abnormal heart rhythm that aff ects your driving or caused sudden dizziness or fainting in the last 12 months then you must inform the DVLA unless the cause has been identified, treated and controlled for at least 4 weeks (source: DVLA driving guidance) TACHYSENSIA This is a rare condition where a person has a distorted view of time and feels everything is moving fast e.g. time / sound / people. Episodes can be quite unsettling but usually last less than 10-20 minutes. It is oft en linked with another unusual and uncommon neurological condition called “Alice in Wonderland Syndrome” where tachysensia is a feature of the range of symptoms suff erers can experience. Using relaxation techniques / learning some Cognitive Behavioural Therapy skills can help manage these unsettling episodes when they occur. However, if you do think you are experiencing this problem then it is wise to speak to your doctor to check there is nothing else causing your symptoms. TACHOPHOBIA This is a condition where people have a fear of fast movements. It may be just related to being afraid of any fast moving vehicles but can also extend to a fear of watching or participating in other fast moving activities e.g. fear of roller coasters during fast moving sports such as watching the 100m mens race / movies (especially action movies) / cartoons. In severe cases it can lead to a person not leaving their home or avoiding driving / using public transport. It is felt to oft en be linked to past traumas related to what they are fearful of and even though most suff erers know it is irrational but that doesn’t mean it is easy to control. It appears to be more common in women than men and also more common if there is a history of anxiety or family history of tachophobia. Symptoms are usually the same / similar to those experienced in anxiety, namely: racing heart, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, feeling dizzy or faint, hyperventilating etc. There are treatments available which are usually therapy based e.g. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which helps reframe how we think about what is causing the phobia. In some patients, antidepressants are used in doses usually used for anxiety and these can be helpful but are not without side eff ects. If you are concerned about any phobia / anxiety then you have a number of options: Mind Cymru has many excellent resources, 111 option gives access to Mental Health Practitioners and Support 24/7 and of course you can speak with your GP who can then refer you on for more specialist assessment if needed. This is a condition where people have a (source: DVLA driving guidance) This is a rare condition where a person has a distorted view of time and feels

14 SA2 Times OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2023 Cancer Research Wales is the only charity wholly dedicated to funding cancer research in Wales for Wales. Wales has some of the worst cancer outcomes in Europe and it is our belief that many of the solutions lie in research. That’s why every penny we raise is spent in Wales, to realise our goal of improving this unacceptable situation. Many people are not aware of the excellent research that is happening on their doorstep. At Swansea University, Cancer Research Wales is funding several projects that have the potential to deliver a huge impact for cancer patients. Professors Dean Harris and Peter Dunstan have worked together for a number of years to create the Raman blood test, which can detect bowel cancer from a patient blood sample. By analysing the molecular fingerprint of the blood using cutting-edge machine learning techniques, the team can identify whether or not bowel cancer is present quickly and accurately, avoiding unpleasant faecal tests and unnecessary colonoscopies. This promises to give more patients a timely diagnosis and will ease the pressure on overstretched NHS services, helping to ensure that this devastating cancer will claim fewer lives. Excitingly, Cancer Research Wales are now funding the team to expand the test to detect other types of cancer including breast and lung cancer, offering hope of improved diagnosis for several of Wales’s most common and deadly cancers. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Wales, but diagnosing it remains a challenge – current methods are not accurate enough and often lead to complications that in some cases can be debilitating. Cancer Research Wales is funding Dr Jason Webber and his team’s research efforts that are focused on creating a new blood test for prostate cancer. The test analyses exosomes, which are small fat bubbles released from cells. By studying the cargo of these exosomes, the test can determine whether prostate cancer is present and also how aggressive it is. This means patients that can be prioritised appropriately and unnecessary invasive tests can be avoided.

SA2 Times OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2023 15 The test detects changes in blood cells, which occur when they pass through the tumour, as an indicator that cancer is present – similar to how a smoke alarm indirectly detects a fire. This test should ensure that patients can receive an earlier diagnosis, while also bringing peace of mind to those who haven’t developed cancer. These three projects at Swansea University offer hope of new, transformative methods for diagnosing cancer. However, they represent only a small part of work that Cancer Research Wales is funding across Wales. It is only with the generous support of the people of Wales that we are able to keep funding life-changing research. There are many ways that you can support us, including locally: shopping, donating or volunteering at our shop in Killay, running the Swansea Half Marathon or even doing a skydive! Together, we can change the face of cancer in Wales. Get in touch 029 2185 5050 contact-us@ cancerresearchwales.org.uk cancerresearch.wales @cancerresearchwales

SA2 Times OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2023 21

22 SA2 Times OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2023 Written by Lawyer PAULA MURPHY What is A Home Rights Notice ? I am guessing that if you have been through a divorce, you may know the answer. When a couple enters into a marriage/civil partnership, it automatically creates home rights between them. This gives any spouse/civil partner an automatic legal right to live in the property owned by the other. The purpose of home rights is to prevent one party from being able to force the other party out of the family home should the relationship fail. Another purpose is to give the non-property-owning spouse the right to continue to live in the family home, even if it is not in their name. It doesn’t matter a jot that you are not on the title deeds to the family home, as you will have acquired Home Rights. So, for example, if you have left the family home as a result of your separation, it is important that you seek legal advice to register a Home Rights Notice at the Land Registry so as to prevent the legal owner from selling or remortgaging the property behind your back. Obviously, if there was nothing registered against the title at the Land Registry, the legal owner could instruct solicitors to deal with the sale or remortgage of the property, without disclosing any information about their separation. This could cause significant issues for any financial proceedings, as the proceeds of sale of the property would be paid to the property-owning spouse upon completion of sale. Once the Home Rights Notice has been registered against the property, it will essentially stop the sale of the home as no purchaser’s solicitor will be able to proceed with the purchase/remortgage whilst that notice, protecting the non-property owner’s interest, remains registered against the property. Home rights Notices confer highly effective protective measures, especially in cases where the other party may have the upper hand in the separation, by virtue of the family home being registered in their sole name. A significant number of clients are somewhat naïve to the law, believing that they have no rights in respect of the family home, if they are not registered as joint owner. This is not the case! As soon as a Final Order (previously known ‘Decree Absolute’) has been granted, the parties are no longer married and as such the Home Rights Notice ceases to exist once the Land Registry have been notified of the divorce. Some people separate and move on with their lives without formally ending the marriage. Such instances could lead to one party selling what once was the family home and pocketing the entire proceeds of sale and potentially dissipating the funds, without the other party’s knowledge or consent. The registration of a Home Rights Notice against the family home could prevent this from happening. As with most aspects of family and property matters, the legal issues arising can be extremely complex, hence the need to discuss matters with a lawyer qualified to navigate you smoothly through a minefield of obstacles as quickly and as cost effectively as possible.

34 SA2 Times OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2023 According to research from Royal London, over half of us have not checked our State Pension forecast, which tells you how much money you’ve built up so far and how much you’re due to receive. Almost half of people don’t know the earliest age they can claim their state pension. This is scary because the same research shows that over one in five people aged 66 or over said that the State Pension is likely to be their only source of income in retirement. And a third said it will be their main source of income. Here’s a confession. Pensions are my weak spot when it comes to financial advice. Like most people, I find pensions confusing and hard to get my head around (and I trained as a financial advisor). Yet I still feel a sense of unease when thinking about the provisions I’m making for my own retirement. So for the column this week I’ve called in an expert. I’ve asked the legendary consumer finance specialist and my fellow TV expert from Rip Off Britain, Sarah Pennells, to explain everything for us. A plain English guide to the State Pension So what is the State Pension? It’s basically a regular payment from the Government that you claim when you reach State Pension age. There has been quite a bit of fiddling around with the age that you can claim a pension over the years. For people in their 40s to mid-60s the state pension age is between ages 66 and 68 depending on when you were born. Bear in mind the Government might choose to make changes to this in the future (don’t expect it to come down!) The amount of State Pension you get depends on your National Insurance contributions. Most people under state pension age typically pay National Insurance contributions on any income they earn. But if you don’t pay National Insurance, you might be surprised to find that you are still getting National Insurance credits. You may get the credits if you’re claiming state benefits because you’re ill or unemployed, or if you’re claiming Child Benefit for a child under 12 years of age. In summary, you’ll get a proportion of the new State Pension if you have between 10 and 35 ‘qualifying years’. What qualifying years means in English is when you’ve earned a certain amount of wages through your job or you’ve received applicable state benefits”. Check out Sarah’s full guide here: https://www.royallondon.com/ articles-guides/your-money/state-pension/ How do I know if I’m not contributing enough to the State Pension? Sometimes you may have gaps in your National Insurance record. This could be because you were: • Employed but had low earnings • Unemployed and were not claiming benefits • Self-employed but did not pay contributions because of small profits • Living abroad. You may be able to make up these gaps and so increase your State Pension. For example, you could pay voluntary National Insurance contributions or apply for National Insurance credits. You can find out more by visiting the government website or by calling the National Insurance helpline on 0300 200 3500. Make sure you have your National Insurance number handy if you call the helpline. How to get back in control of your state pension Surprisingly, given that we tend to think of pensions as too complicated to grapple with, it’s actually quite easy to find out the status of your State Pension. All of the information you need is on the Gov.uk website. You can also get free help and advice on the Government backed website Money Helper if you are worried you’re not going to have enough money for retirement. Martyn James is a leading consumer rights campaigner, TV and radio broadcaster and journalist. Seize control of your state pension Do you know how much money you’ll get when the time comes to claim your state pension?

42 SA2 Times OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2023 By Hannah Stephenson Late crop gardening Not only will new crops keep the soil covered over winter and help to suppress weeds, you'll have a bonus crop of quick-maturing vegetables before the winter closes in - while some are hardy enough to keep harvesting through until early spring. Others will get a head-start on spring-sown crops and should be ready several weeks early. Which? Gardening, the Consumers' Association magazine, trialled a number of veg including onions, peas, beans and winter salads to see how they would fare planted in the autumn. The trial, found that garlic is a crop worth starting in autumn unless you've got cold, wet soil - in which case, wait until February. Buy or order the bulbs now, but wait until November before planting them. Split the bulbs into individual cloves just before planting, about 15cm apart. Ease them into the soil, and make sure their tops are hidden or the birds may take them. They should produce plants about 15cm tall before winter, which will be tough enough to survive the season, and you should be harvesting them by July. You can also plant onions in the autumn, spacing the sets 10cm apart in rows 30cm apart during October or November. These will overwinter like the garlic and should be dried off and ready to harvest in mid-July, a couple of weeks before spring-planted onions. Try the varieties 'Electric' and 'Radar'. Peas and broad beans can also be sown in October and November, provided you choose a sunny, sheltered spot. Sow broad beans in double rows with 20cm between plants each way, to make it easy to support the plants in spring, by running string round the outside tied to posts at the corners. With peas, dig out out a shallow trench 3-4cm deep and at least 15cm wide. Scatter seeds roughly 5cm apart each way. The plants should reach 15-20cm tall before they stop growing in mid-winter. If you want salad all winter, go for the winter-hardy varieties. While you can sow them straight into the ground, you may have better results sowing them in modular trays or small pots inside this month to protect them from slugs and snails, and then plant them out in October and November. Cover the plants with horticultural fleece to stop the pigeons feasting on them, and provide protection from hard frosts. Which? Gardening also trialled a variety of winter salads, and most of them provided pickings of leaves from January to April. Pick individual leaves or cut whole plants as soon as they are large enough until they start to bolt in spring. Reliable varieties of hardy lettuce include the cos 'Winter Density' and the butterhead type 'Valdor'. If you have seed left over from spring you may want to have a go and see what comes up. You may have success if you make September sowings of carrots, beetroot, radish, turnip and kohl rabi, spinach and leaf beet. Reliable types include the carrot 'Early Nantes', lettuce 'Little Gem' or 'Salad Bowl' and beetroot 'Boltardy'. Success will depend on the weather. Give the area a good soaking several days before you sow, especially if the weather's been hot and dry. Aim to harvest before the first severe frosts, or cover the crops with fleece to extend the season. You may still be reaping the rewards of all your hard work on the allotment or vegetable patch this year, but don't down tools just yet as there are winter crops which can be planted in autumn to fill the gaps.

SA2 Times OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2023 43 These famously prickly evergreen shrubs are ideal for training against walls - not only to show their wonderful berries off to their best but also to deter opportunist burglars, thanks to the sharp thorns. They can also be grown as freestanding bushes, and most will be producing berries now in varying shades of red, orange or yellow. Birds tend to leave them alone, so the berries can remain until Christmas and beyond. The most popular is P coccinea 'Lalandel', which produces orangered berries, while 'Orange Glow' provides excellent orange berries and 'Soleil d'Or' has yellow berries. Plants will grow to 2.5m x 2.5m and look wonderful if trained as espaliers. They thrive in any reasonable garden soil in sun and partial shade. Images: Shutterstock.com Jobs to do... Gardening In recent years, leeks have enjoyed a rise in popularity, but the pre-packaged baby varieties you get in supermarkets are not a patch on those you can grow yourself in a sunny site on soil which won't become waterlogged in winter. It's true, leeks occupy the ground for a long time, but the big plus is that they can be harvested from autumn to late winter. They can be sown in seed trays indoors from mid to late winter, the seedlings pricked out and placed in modular trays and then hardened off in a cold frame for planting out in mid-spring. Alternatively, sow the seeds outdoors in spring for autumn crops, raking the soil to a fine tilth and sowing thinly in drills 15cm apart and 1cm deep. When the baby leeks are pencil thick, move them to their final position, ideally in free-draining ground which has been given plenty of well-rotted organic matter the previous autumn or winter. Water thoroughly the day before and make wide, deep holes - 15cm deep and 5cm across - dropping a single seedling in each. Don't backfill with soil, but fill each hole with water to settle the soil around the roots. For longer stems, earth up around the stems during the growing season, weed regularly and water thoroughly during long dry spells about every 10 days. Baby leeks for salads can be pulled from early summer, but more people wait for the stems to thicken so they can harvest bigger plants from late summer for soups and casseroles. Three ways to… Buy healthy bulbs Plant new climbers, shrubs and trees while the soil is still warm. Take cuttings or save tender plants when you clear out summer containers if you have space to overwinter them. Make sure bowls of bulbs being forced for indoor flowering don't dry out. As land becomes vacant in the vegetable plot, start digging when ground conditions are good, leaving the ground rough to allow the frost to penetrate. Protect strawberries potted for forcing early next year against frost by putting them in a cold frame. Continue to plant biennials such as foxglove, Canterbury bells and honesty. Check over brassicas for caterpillars of the cabbage white butterfly and pick off any you find. Cut back asparagus foliage and weed the bed and any self-set plants before applying a layer of organic matter. Once leaves have fallen, prune gooseberries. Mow your lawn less frequently as growth slows down, and raise the height of the cutting blades. Reduce the feeding of fish in ponds as any food not eaten will just decompose in the water. Trim conifers if necessary for the last time, but don't cut into old wood. Prune tall shrubs such as lavateras and Buddleia davidii, cutting them back by about half their height to tidy them up and prevent wind rock during winter. They can then be pruned hard in the spring. Leeks Good enough to eat... 1. Avoid outlets where bulbs are kept in warm conditions, as this will encourage premature growth. 2. Don't buy soft bulbs or those with long shoots already growing. 3. To assess the quality of pre-packed bulbs, have a good feel of the contents through the bag and put it back on the shelf if any feel soft and squishy. Best of the bunch... Pyracantha (Firethorn)
