But for many this will not happen unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay care home fees. To help protect a couple’s estate, the solution may be a Will incorporating a Trust. A testamentary Trust can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the fi rst partner, their Will specifi es that their share of the estate is placed in Trust and names the ultimate benefi ciary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. But under the terms of the Trust, the surviving partner has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property and to enjoy the other’s assets for the rest of their life. On the death of the other partner, the Trust comes to an end and the estate passes to the benefi ciaries, and as the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the estate, it is fully protected for the benefi ciaries. So, if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the benefi ciary’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have children from previous relationships. A Trust can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the estate. If the surviving partner wants to move, they can still sell the property and use the proceeds to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. The immediate goal is to exceed their Tokyo 2020 tally of 64 medals – which included 22 golds – and confi dence is high that this can again be a special year for those who dedicate their time and their bodies to competition. The line-up for the gold medal hopefuls features an impressive array of athletes, each with genuine hope of the ultimate glory. While most eyes tend to look towards Adam Peaty, Tom Dean has made incredible strides in recent years, demonstrating his prowess with double gold in Tokyo 2020 in 200m individual and team freestyle. Duncan Scott also shines in the pool – the 27-year-old Glaswegian’s ability to dominate in various swimming events earned him Tokyo gold in the same 4x200m freestyle team as Dean. As for Peaty, he’s held 14 world records at one time or another, and is looking for a third 100m Olympic gold in a row. In gymnastics, Max Whitlock has distinguished himself with mastery of the pommel horse, the event in which he’ll be aiming to complete a hat-trick of Olympic golds. The 31-year-old says this will be his last Olympics. On the track, Zharnel Hughes will be looking to fulfi l his promise in both the 100m and 200m. Hughes is European champion, holds the British record at both distances, and is a real contender. The Village Grapevine It’s the time of year when I pay a visit to the various Flower Shows from the big RHS, Chelsea & Hampton Court to the local shows and fairs. This allows me to catch up with the established and up and coming stars of the garden and growing world. Over the last few years certainly there seems to be a big leaning towards letting nature take back control or re-wilding as some prefer. And it’s a principle we can all incorporate into our gardens whatever the size, you can leave a patch of grass unmown for a few weeks or sprinkle some native wildfl owers in a pot to bring some nature onto your balcony! As we head into the summer months it’s anyone’s guess as to what the weather will be, with the changing climate, we are all going to have to change our ways to accommodate the wider variations that seem to happen, even the seasons can’t be relied on anymore! All the herbaceous plants should be bursting with colour and the borders growing along nicely, and the bedding plants in your pots and baskets will be getting better week by week. Your grass should also be growing on strongly by now and a few little tips to keep the grass greener for longer. I personally always cut the grass a little higher as we head towards the height of summer, you will be surprised how much a couple of extra centimetres can keep the grass that bit greener and healthy. Although you may need to cut it a bit more often the extra leaf on the grass will help it absorb more moisture when it rains or in the morning dew, a good summer feed will also do the power of good greening it up and building the root structure. 32 l THE SANDHURST DIRECTORY

On the veg plot everything should be full of life, and you should have eaten plenty of your produce by now whether it be some tasty New Potatoes or some Lettuce with some Radishes. You may well have also had some early Carrots or Peas. Depending on if you had some way of getting an early start via a heated greenhouse or other method you could be munching away on a whole variety of veg by now, but remember with things like Lettuce, Radishes and Carrots, to keep up with your repeat sowings every two weeks or so to keep a fresh supply coming. I had my fi rst Strawberry from my plot the other day and very nice it was too! The wildlife in the garden will also be in full fl ow now so make sure those bird baths are full and the feeder stocked up. It also means that some of the more troublesome parts of nature i.e. pests will be munching on your plants, veg and fruit or digging up your prize plants. There are countless diffl erent ways of dealing with these problems that would take up countless pages, but my only tip on these matters would be prevention is better than any type of spraying etc. Admittedly sometimes you can’t stop some attacks to your garden but generally speaking the sooner you react the less damage is done, and there are many effl ective non-pesticide remedies to most problems. i.e. slug pellets can be effl ective but wandering round your pots of an evening picking the slugs and snails offl your plants is just as effl ective, cheaper and far better for the other creatures in your garden and the environment.

36 l THE SANDHURST DIRECTORY Feeling somewhat overwhelmed from � me to � me strikes me as a fairly normal experience. I am sure most people feel it occasionally and these feelings pass once the work load eases off , but if this is something that is a regular experience, then this is something that you need to give some a� en� on to. I have seen people who are overwhelmed experiencing huge levels of stress, combined with feelings of inadequacy, loss of confi dence, anxiety, and some� mes experiencing physical symptoms such as elevated blood pressure, and occasionally a feeling of being ‘burnt out’. In certain cases people’s appe� te is aff ected. Some people fi nd it diffi cult to eat due to the amount of stress they are under, or others may overeat in order to comfort themselves. In an ideal world, we would only take on what we can cope with easily, we would have no problem saying no to things that are too much for us or take up too much of our � me, and we would have ample � me to engage in relaxing ac� vi� es which help us de-stress and unwind. In the real world however, you want to be the perfect employee, or the best boss, or the business owner providing an exemplary customer experience, or the most engaged or compassionate parent, with the perfect children in the perfect house, which of course is as clean as a new pin, and you will be earning enough to fund the lifestyle you aspire to living. You don’t want to let anybody down, or miss any deadlines. Of course, when we set the bar that high, there is a lot of pressure to achieve it, and once you have achieved it, there is pressure to maintain it. Some people seem to be able to do this naturally, and I o� en wonder if they are like swans paddling furiously below the water level just to appear to keep eff ortlessly afl oat. I o� en see people like this in my therapy room. These people come in saying they need help with their confi dence or stress, and when we unpick it, if o� en comes down to feelings of being overwhelmed. There are several ways of helping with this. The fi rst is to look at � me management. I usually help people come up with a system to ensure that they don’t drop the ball on tasks and that they don’t feel overwhelmed looking at a huge long list of tasks. Then most importantly, I help them to listen to what they are telling themselves, and to fi nd a way to reframe it so that it is a kinder narra� ve. For example “ I have a huge amount to do, but I am working through it and ge� ng it done. Anybody would feel under pressure, but I am learning to cope with this be� er”. Thirdly, learning when it is appropriate to say yes to something and almost more signifi cantly knowing when it is right to say no. There are � mes when you just have to accept that you can’t do everything, just because it’s fun and you would like to. Finally we work on their self- confi dence and feeling like they are good enough in a very demanding world. 38 l THE SANDHURST DIRECTORY Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan 160°C)/gas mark 4 and divide 16 paper cases between two 12-hole cupcake trays. 2. Put the butter and the sugar in a free-standing electric mixer with a paddle attachment (or use a handheld electric whisk) and beat on medium speed until light and fl uffy. 3. Turn the mixer up to high speed, slowly add the eggs and beat until well incorporated. 4. In a separate bowl, mix together the cocoa powder, food-colouring paste, 3 tablespoons of water and vanilla extract to make a thick, dark paste. Add to the butter mixture and mix until evenly combined and coloured. 5.Turn the mixer down to slow and slowly pour in half the buttermilk. Beat until well mixed, then add half the fl our. Continue until all the buttermilk and fl our have been added. Scrape down the side of the bowl again. Turn the mixer up to high speed and beat until you have a smooth, even mixture. Turn the mixer down to low speed and add the salt, bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Turn back up and beat for a 2 minutes. 6. Divide evenly between the paper cases and bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until the sponge bounces back when touched. Leave the cupcakes to cool for about 15 minutes in the trays before turning out onto a wire cooling rack to cool completely. 7. While the cupcakes are cooling, make the frosting. Beat the butter and icing sugar together in a free-standing mixer with a paddle attachment (or use a handheld electric whisk) on a medium-slow speed until the mixture comes together and is well mixed and When Londoner Tarek Malouf opened the fi rst Hummingbird Bakery in Notting Hill back in 2004, he never imagined just how popular his American-style cakes and baked goods would be.
