The Village Grapevine Although we haven’t had the weeks of sweltering temperatures we had last year, we have had a few hot spells and a fair amount of rain so it’s still been a good summer in the garden. That’s not to say that you don’t get some cracking weather in October: the days still contain some warmth in the soil and you will also have the moisture that lends itself to the planting of new shrubs and trees. The creation of new borders and new turf can also still be laid giving it a good head start so it can push on in the Spring. Towards the end of October the leaves will start there inevitable journey from tree to ground and this can continue on into the new year in many cases. Always try to clear as many leaves up as soon as you can from lawns as the damage they can do if left lying on lawns can undo all your good work over the Spring/Summer. It only takes a few weeks of leaves on a lawn to weaken or kill areas with not much you can do to repair until Spring comes around. Do not stop mowing your lawn: just lift the blades up a notch and use the mower as a hoover keeping the grass neat and picking up any debris in with the job too. If you can leave a little pile of leaves in an out of the way area you never know you may just get a little spikey visitor for the winter! 28 l THE SANDHURST DIRECTORY

There are some beautiful days to be had with the ever-changing scenery as all the leaves change to all the oranges, reds and browns and gently drift and fall to the ground. Down the Plot... Harvesting time is upon us so with Halloween within touching distance so cut them Pumpkins remembering to leave a good few inches of stalk out the top. Same for all the members of the squash family: their water content is high so a sudden hard frost will spell their end! If you have a cloche or fl eece, put them over any lettuce leaves to keep them in the best condition. Even as some crops come to an end you need to get some planted now so they can push on early next Spring: namely Garlics and Onion Setts. There is always something to do down the allotment, even if it is sitting in your shed and reading the new seed catalogue that has landed on the doormat, “oh what to try next year?” If you are leaving some carrots in the ground try putting some straw on them just to protect the ground from frost and make them a little easier to lift when required. Talking of frost! or one plant it makes all the diff erence: Brussel Sprouts! A gentle frosting on your sprouts stirs the sprouts to release an anti-freeze if you like, which luckily for us is better known as sugar! The diff erence between a sprout before and after a frost is similar to night and day, so go on, try a Brussel: they’re worth it! I’ve had mixed success this year down the plot with my Parsnips, they never really got going even with a few sowings, but the Carrots, well, in a reversal of last year every seed I sowed came up! But for many this will not happen unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay care home fees. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but really enjoyed it. The staff were very friendly and it was a fun setting with a vibrant and colourful decor. It is a chain restaurant off ering “Latin American flavours, awesome cocktails and Rio vibes” according to its own write up and, to be fair, it doesn’t do a bad job of living up to that description bearing in mind it is located in British Bracknell! They off er 2 for 1 happy hour cocktails throughout the day. The food was good and as reasonably priced as anywhere is these days. Choose from veggie or meat Tacos, Sharing Boards, Nachos, Quesadilla, Fajita Stacks, Enchilada & Burrito. Cocktails are served in fun shaped beakers and glasses and range from cocktails, mocktails and pitchers to share. 36 l THE SANDHURST DIRECTORY A slightly difi erent destination from the usual city break to consider for a short break away this time: one you may not have thought of. In middle of the Irish Sea between England and Ireland is the selfgoverning British Crown Dependency The Isle of Man. Options for travel are catching a ferry from either Heysham or Liverpool (takes 3-4 hours) or grab a quick flight to IOM Airport (Ronaldsway). It’s a 20 minute taxi drive to the capital Douglas. Douglas is a quintessential British seaside town with plenty of eateries and guest houses and hotels to choose from. We stayed in The Mannin Hotel on the sea front “off ering traditional Manx hospitality” at a reasonable price. www.manninhotel.im It is easy to walk anywhere in Douglas from the hotel and to get a taxi or bus or hire car to explore the island. Inland the island is very rugged and beautiful with medieval castles and blustery coastal areas to see seals and take dolphin watching boat rides. The windy roads are, of course, where the Isle of Man TT major annual cross-country motorcycle race takes place and you can see the black and white stripes painted on the curbs and the crash barriers at the corners! The IOM is definitely a hikers’ paradise and although the weather will possibly never be the warmest it is an interesting and diff erent short break away. 38 l THE SANDHURST DIRECTORY THE ISTRIAN RIVIERA is surrounded by approximately 250kms of beautiful coastline of the Adriatic Sea. Although the beaches are generally stoney they are truly beautiful and unspoilt. There are hilltop villages and national parks that have not been marred by the usual tourism developments. The Istrian Riviera, Croatia has a varied and rich history created by being conquered by various empires throughout the times. A diff erent area to explore in Croatia compared with the possibly better known Split The Italian influence is particularly apparent and in the pretty beach town of Pula there is a Roman amphitheatre where concerts and film festivals are held. Rovinj is particularly stunning as it sits adjacent to a seaside forest with beautiful little coves, cliff climbing and rocks to swim off . Porec has beaches of pebbles alongside an historic town centre with the Euphrasian Basilica. Croatia is a short flight from England with a few airlines off ering passage there. We stayed in a hotel in Medulin, which is about a 20 minute drive from Pula (public busses and taxis get you to Pula easily), but there are a few hotels in the area to choose from as well as apartments to rent. Medulin is a small town with a pretty marina and everything is in walking distance. The hotel was about a 5 minute walk to a busy beach with the usual bars, restaurants and shops – it is in a little cove so the water seems calm and protected. Our all inclusive hotel was for adults only and had a saltwater swimming pool and good view of the sea. The food was good and well presented and the beverages of a good quality, despite it being all inclusive. The hotel looked a little stark on the outside, but on the inside was tastefully decorated and clean with good size rooms. Definitely worth booking a partial seaview in my opinion. The staff looked aft er us brilliantly. On any trip like this it’s always worth asking reception about trips that can be taken locally. We found out about a local family run firm The Globus Travel Agency www.globusmedulin.com that arranged a superb quad bike safari for 2 hours, which took us along the coastline and to beaches that we would never have got to see otherwise – it’s a very dusty, friendly, fun experience. Hire a little boat from them and go island hopping for a few hours – dock up at the little jetties on the little uninhabited islands and swim, snorkel, sunbath, have a drink at the bars or take a picnic. Our hotel arranged packed lunches for us to take. The water really is clear and warm and calm. If you don’t want to hire a boat yourself then there are arranged larger group boats that will take you out around the islands and to caves you can swim in or to go dolphin watching. If you fancy a day trip to Venice that is also possible, but be aware it is a 17 hour round trip! The hotel or The Globus Travel Agency can organise this for you. At the marina there are lot of little boats available for hire, but I think they are ones that you may need a licence to drive. We didn’t manage it this time, but at Istria’s eastern edge at Rijeka it is possible to get a boat to the stunning islands of Krk, Cres and Rab. Something for next time if we are lucky enough. Going abroad is particularly expensive at the moment, but there are some less expensive holidays to be found if you’re prepared to spend a lot of time looking and comparing. To give an idea the Medulin hotel in mid July for an all-inclusive week at a 4* hotel including flights, transfers, food and drink was around the £800 per person. The weather was in the mid 30’s that time of year, but with the respite of a slight breeze near the coastline. The last night brought an impressive thunderstorm with incredible lightening and rain, which I gather is not unusual to suddenly happen in Croatia, but by the morning it was as if it hadn’t happened. In conclusion: a week in Croatia off ered sun, beauty, calm warm waters, delicious food and a truly relaxing time. Explore the Istrian Coast Croatia 38 l THE SANDHURST DIRECTORY

40 l THE SANDHURST DIRECTORY Take a Trip ON THE RIVER L ast minute we managed to get the whole family together, the weather was looking sunny and we wanted something to do that would suit all ages groups and that we could include the dogs in too. A self drive boat trip on the river came into the conversation, but we were worried we had left it too late to find availability. We managed to get the last half day boat available from Marlow through The Little Green Boat Company. We weren’t quite sure what to expect, but the six of us set off with our picnic, prosecco and the three dogs! The Little Green Boat Company has three locations that you can hire from: Marlow, Staines and Maidenhead. The Marlow location is at Higginson Park, Pound Lane, SL7 2AE – there is a paying carpark, but arrive early as it can get full. Boat hire is either a rowing boat for an hour’s hire at approx. £20; a motorboat for an hour trip costing £48 for 4 people / £55 for 8 people; a 4 hour trip between 10am-2pm for up to 8 people costing £220 or a full day (8 hours for up to 8 people) costing £395. If there is a group of you and you split the cost between you then it isn’t too bad. The minimum age limit for a motorboat is 21 years and for a rowing boat is 18 years old. If you are not keen to go through the locks then the hour trip is the one for you as you will have a fun time and see some incredible houses on the bank of the pretty riverside without having to go through one. If you are feeling more adventurous then book a longer trip. The staff will explain the locks to you and there seem to always be other people on hand at the locks or on other boats that will help you. Once you have done one lock you will feel more confident. It really is worth it as there are some truly incredible riverside properties and gardens to see as you slowly wander along, as well as birdlife. Take a picnic and graze as you meander along, or berth on the bank and picnic on the grass. There are also some riverbank pubs that you can moor up at and enjoy food and drink. It’s possible to take calm dogs with you – our three loved it. We all had a really happy time for the 4 hours – it’s a very leisurely experience as you get to chat together properly, relax while admiring the houses and chatting with other boat users, picnicking and sipping a drink (responsibly of course). Take in the beautiful sights of Marlow, Cookham, Cliveden House Hotel, Henley and much more.. Now, the dreaded motor car is harmful to our environment, however, to live without one in this part of the country is incredibly diffi cult, where public transport is patchy and for the most part, quite slow. If you need to rely on other people to drive you to where you need to go, it can feel very disempowering and this can be made even more upse� ng if you know that you used to be able to drive everywhere you wanted to go just a few years ago but now you fi nd that you can’t do it because of a phobia. So, you might ask, how does this happen, that someone who used to be a confi dent driver in their younger years, has suddenly lost their confi dence? Well, the answer is diff erent for everybody. I have seen a lot of women, who have relied on their husbands to drive everywhere, and the husbands have been happy to oblige. So, over the years this has led to lack of prac� ce for the women. Roll on several years, and perhaps the women separate from their partners, or become widowed, and then the women suddenly need to fend for themselves and then fi nd that they have lost their confi dence to do get behind a wheel. For others, it can be a nasty experience, or an accident whilst driving that can make people shy away from taking the wheel. Others might have a panic a� ack one day and become terrifi ed that it will happen again when they are on the road. For people who have not driven for a while, it could just be the fact that the motorways are so much busier nowadays than they used to be. A lot of people fear the higher speed of the motorways and feel unsafe. There can be any number of reasons why people lose confi dence. The good news is that there is a lot that I can do as a hypnotherapist to help them get back on the road. This is one area of my work where I feel that I am making a huge diff erence to people to help them reclaim their personal sense of freedom. There is nothing more empowering than knowing that you are free to go where you want, when you want. To do this I help clients to change their beliefs so that they regain their confi dence in their ability to drive and that they can drive safely. I help them to learn selfcalming techniques to use whilst they are driving, and I can help them let go of any trauma� c experiences they may have endured which may be holding them back from moving on.
