75TH ANNIVERSARY SPEECH AND PRIZE – GIVING DAY
A REPORT he President of the Republic of Ghana, the Moderator
of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Chairperson,
From 1996D President, Headmistress, Parents, Teachers, Fellow Beacons,
Barbara Dodoo-Arhin
TCurrent Students, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour of delivering the diamond message on behalf
of the Abugiss 96D year group. We are pleased to be the host
of the Speech and Prize Giving Day to commemorate the 75th
Anniversary of our Alma mater. The Class of 1996D has always been
50 years; coincidently on its 75th *Birthday* and 25 years of
leaving school we have the privilege to host the celebrations
including the Speech and Prize and Giving and handover a project
to commemorate 25years of leaving the “four walls of Aburi Girls”.
Please allow me to use this opportunity to express gratitude to
other year groups that have gone ahead of us, especially, the 1995
year group who handed over the torch to us after commissioning
their beautiful project.
209 of us enrolled in Aburi Girls Senior High School in 1994, where
a new chapter in our lives was about to be written now known as
the class of 1996d. We had to be differentiated because there
was the last batch of O’ Level students who would be the known
as the Class of 1994/1996 on completion of their A’ Levels. We
were the 4th batch of SS students to walk through the gates of
this great school.
Our time in Aburi Girls remain one of the best with nostalgic
memories. As girls in our early teens coming from various parts
of the country, who had to brace the cold weather of Aburi, it was
indeed a new experience with its own challenges. We wondered
how our predecessors were able to cope with the cold weather,
if during their time in school, as we were told, Aburi was colder
than what we met. Our trips to Kokoase and Adonteng to fetch
water, were just like expeditions for some of us. For young girls
homes, it was scary yet adventurous.
It was a challenge dealing with two different groups of seniors
on campus (O Level, A Levels and SS leaders) We met seniors in
upper six, lower six, form 5, SSS 3 and SSS 2. Responding to these
seniors was a herculean task; each one felt entitled; thus, it wasn’t

The Church’s one foundation 1
Is Jesus Christ her Lord; O for a thousand tongues to sing
She is His new creation, My great Redeemer’s praise,
By Water and the Word: The glories of my God and King,
From Heav’n He came and sought her The triumphs of His grace!
To be His holy bride,
With His own Blood He bought her, 2.
And for her life He died My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
2 To spread through all the earth abroad
Elect from ev’ry nation, The honours of thy name.
Yet one o’er all the earth,
Her charter of salvation, 3.
One Lord, one faith, one birth; Jesus! The name that charms our fears,
One holy name she blesses, That bids our sorrows cease;
Partakes one holy food, ‘Tis music in the sinner’s ears,
And to one hope she presses, ‘Tis life, and health, and peace.
With ev’ry grace endued.
4.
3 He breaks the power of cancelled sin,
Though with a scornful wonder He sets the prisoner free;
Men see her sore oppressed, His blood can make the foulest clean,
By schisms rent asunder His blood availed for me.
By heresies distressed;
Yet saints their watch are keeping, 5.
Their cry goes up: How long? He speaks, and, listening to His voice,
And soon the night of weeping New life the dead receive,
Shall be the morn of song. The mournful broken hearts rejoice,
The humble poor believe.
4.
‘Mid toil and tribulation, 6.
And tumult of her war, Hear him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb,
She waits the consummation Your loosened tongues employ;
Of peace forevermore; Ye blind, behold your Saviour come,
Till with the vision glorious, And leap, ye lame, for joy.
Her longing eyes are blest,
And the great Church victorious 7.
Shall be the Church at rest. Glory to God, and praise and love
Be ever, ever given,
5. By saints below and saints above,
Yet she on earth had union, The church on earth and heaven.
With God the Three in One
And mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won
O happy ones and holy
Lord, give us grace that we,
Like them, the meek and lowly,
On high may dwell with thee.
