Virtual Reality

Simulation-Based Training
Course to Analyze and
Enhance Your Tissue
Handling Skills and Your
Surgical Judgment

HOW YOU WILL
BENEFIT

Would you like to analyze and improve
the mechanics of your surgical incision
and dissection skills? Enroll in our
simulation based Ocular Incisions and
Dissections Course (OIDC), part of our
Mechanics of Ophthalmic Surgery-Tools,
Tissues and Thoughts (MOST) program.
Certified instructors provide feedback
based on simulator data, captured in real
time, so that you can improve
your surgical skills and
judgment.

WHO
WE ARE

HelpMeSee, is a nonprofit organization
committed to training skilled cataract
specialists and surgeons in large
numbers to eliminate cataract blindness.
HelpMeSee has developed simulation
technology to refine eye surgery training
methods. The HelpMeSee Eye Surgery
Simulator provides an immersive
experience that looks and feels like real
eye surgery.

TRAINING

The one-of-a-kind technology of the
HelpMeSee Eye Surgery Simulator
replicates the mechanics of surgical interac-
tion: angles, forces, friction, flow and
resistance with realistic cause and effect.

High fidelity virtual reality simulation with
haptic feedback is built atop physics models
of surgical instrument and eye tissue

interactions. The simulation has the
ability to elucidate the mechanics of
ophthalmic surgery. Participants will

understand how ocular tissues respond
to interactions with instruments when
cutting, stabbing and injecting.

Skill in Ocular Incisions and Dissections are
essential in Manual Small Incision Cataract
Surgery (MSICS), conversion to scleral
tunnel in complicated clear cornea
phacoemulsification cases, secondary intra
ocular lens (IOL) implantation and trabe-
culectomy.

During the Ocular Incisions and Dissections
Course (OIDC), your instructor will use
simulator generated graphic overlays and

real time feedback to analyze your surgery
skills and improve your understanding
and performance.

The course will be taught using
discussion at the Simulator, and
participants will receive a Training
Certificate of completion.

Course Coverage and Objectives:

1. Controling Partial Thickness Scleral
Incisions

2. Controling Ocular Dissections
3. Controling Corneal Incisions
4. Controling Visco-aqueous Exchange
5. Using Visual and Tactile Surgical Cues

BENEFITS AND
VALUE

SIMULATION-BASED LEARNING

The HelpMeSee Eye Surgery Simulator
creates a unique skills learning environment
that is safe and allows the trainee to
practice and learn from their own experi-
ence. Our OIDC provides the opportunity
to identify, think through and practice
surgery strategies for improvement.

The Simulator provides:

The ability to see the results of your efforts
and correct in real time.

Visuals and a realistic feel which simulate
live eye surgery.

Exposure of the mechanics of surgery
techniques in order to improve outcomes.

Objective performance reports to assess
and review with your instructor.

TESTIMONIALS

“It’s going to overall improve the
quality of the surgeries and the
outcome for the patients.

The patients are going to be the
real beneficiaries of this.”

- Dr. R.D. Ravindran
Chairman, Aravind Eye Care System, India

“As a firm believer in the benefits of virtual
reality simulation training to reduce

complications and improve patient care,
we envision using the HelpMeSee
Eye Surgery Simulator as another
tool in advancing medical
research, education and practice.”

- Barry Issenberg, M.D.
Director, Gordon Center for
Research in Medical Education , Miami
