My Dear Brothers and Sisters,

It is my great honor to welcome you to this celebration of
the future of the Paulists! Today we bless and dedicate not
only a building but a symbol of hope. Standing in the shadow
of a monument to our past, the old St. Paul’s College, is
Hecker House, a new home for Paulist seminarians and
priests, and a new beacon lighting the way forward for the
American Church.

We Paulists have had a consistent presence in Washington, D.C., since before
the founding of the Catholic University of America. Generations of Paulists
have been educated and formed for mission right here on this hallowed land.
Today marks a new beginning. A new place to live and pray, to learn and grow
in community. But more importantly, a new hub for missionary activity and a
training ground for the next generation of missionaries to North America.
This is truly a “House of Mission and Studies” because, for us Paulists, mission
always comes first.

I can only begin to express my profound gratitude to all those who had a
hand in bringing this project to fruition. From the many talented architects,
designers, construction and engineering personnel, to those of you who
gave so generously in support of our recent Hope for the Future campaign,
thank you. Thank you for sharing your gifts, your resources, and your time
and getting us to this happy day.

While this was truly a communal effort, permit me to single out my predecessor,
Fr. Eric Andrews, C.S.P., without whose bold vision, selfless determination, and
tireless zeal, Hecker House would not be standing before you proudly today.

Trusting always that the Holy Spirit is guiding us closer to the fulfillment of
God’s purpose, I remain grateful to you, our partners in God’s mission!

A Brief History of the Paulists
in Washington, D.C.

Servant of God Isaac Hecker, founder of the Paulist Fathers, had been deceased for less
than a year when, in the fall of 1889, the Paulist formation program moved to Washington,
D.C., to be next to a brand-new national Catholic university founded by America’s bishops.

Prior to the move to the nation’s capital, A full-fledged Paulist should

West 59th Street in New York City. the special virtues which are
necessary for his vocation.
Paulist Fr. Augustine Hewit (1820 - 1897)
was at the forefront of the decision. One of — Servant of God Isaac Hecker
the Paulist founders in 1858 and second
superior of the society after Fr. Hecker’s
death, Fr. Hewit had written to Baltimore’s
Cardinal James Gibbons:

“The plan supposes a Paulist House in the vicinity of the University, distinct but affiliated, in
expectation that the ordinary seminary course will be carried out under the direction of the
rector, but hoping to engage the services of university professors for instruction, and to give
young priests and alumni who are prepared the benefit of higher courses in the University.”

Fr. Hewit made the initial move to Washington in 1889 along with Paulist Fr. Aloysius
Russell Nevins (1854 - 1899) and nine Paulists-in-training. Fr. Hewit served on the
original faculty of the university as a lecturer in Church history. Fr. Nevins also became
a professor and was “prefect of novices” until 1895.

The Paulists took up residence in an early 1800s farmhouse on the campus of “The
Catholic University of America” a short distance to the east of the university’s new
large building. They christened their new home “St. Thomas College.”

The Homes of A reporter for The Washington Post visited the house in 1893,
Paulist Formation: noting, “On entering the house the barrenness of the formerly
well-decorated walls is apparent. But there is one object that
Paulist Motherhouse and draws attention. It is the large wheelchair of Rev. Father Hewitt,
The Church of the aged survivor of the five founders of the Paulist Order. For
years, Father Hewitt has been a very great sufferer, and for a
St. Paul the Apostle long time he has been unable to walk, except with much pain. He

The group living at St. Thomas College had grown to 22 by 1897
St. Thomas College when the house was expanded with a third floor and an addition on
Campus of The Catholic the north side. Further additions were made in the following years.

University of America Despite these improvements, by 1905, the Paulists petitioned the
Washington, D.C. university board for an alternative property. And, in 1911, led by
1889 - 1913 then-superior Paulist Fr. John Hughes (1856 - 1919), the Paulists
purchased 25 acres of farmland near the university, directly south
St. Paul’s College of the Dominican house and grounds.

The cornerstone for a new stone building on that site was blessed
1913 - 2016 by Cardinal Gibbons on November 29, 1913. New York’s Archbishop
John Farley preached the sermon that day.
The Paulist House
of Mission and Studies Although the building was occupied before then, it wasn’t until
St. Joseph’s Seminary the completion of the chapel in 1916, that Fr. Hughes officially
named the building “St. Paul’s College.”

2016 - 2022 For the next century, St. Paul’s College was the center of Paulist
formation during decades that saw immense changes for American

The Paulist House society, the Catholic Church, the Paulists and the manner in
of Mission and Studies which seminarians are formed and educated.

Blessed and Dedicated in 2022 St. Paul’s College bore witness to the massive rise in the
number of seminarians following World War II, with new
wings built in the 1940s and 1950s. For a time, it was a
degree-granting institution.

The building also witnessed the decline in seminarian numbers,
with renovations and restructuring in 1986 and 2006 to better
suit the needs of the time.

In 2016, the Paulists sold St. Paul’s College. The Paulist
seminarians, novices and formation team then moved to the
Paulist House of Mission and Studies at St. Joseph’s Seminary
(a property of The Josephites), on the eastern side of the
Brookland neighborhood in Washington, D.C.

The Josephites have been gracious hosts to the current
moment, as the Paulists return to a small piece of that
original land purchased in 1911 for the blessing and dedication
of Hecker House, the new, right-sized Paulist House of
Mission and Studies.

A Reading from the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians.

Consider your own calling, brothers. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many
were powerful, not many were of noble birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to
shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, and God chose the
lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who
are something, so that no human being might boast before God. It is due to him that you are in
Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, as well as righteousness, sanctification, and
redemption, so that, as it is written, “Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord.”

When I came to you, brothers, proclaiming the mystery of God, I did not come with sublimity
of words or of wisdom. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ,
and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling, and my message and
my proclamation were not with persuasive (words of) wisdom, but with a demonstration of spirit
and power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

Response Glory to You, O Lord.
Jesus went around to all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming
the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness. At the sight of the crowds,
his heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep
without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers
are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.”

After the prayer of blessing, Cardinal Gregory sprinkles with holy water those present
and then enters Hecker House to bless the inside of the building.
A small group of Paulists will accompany His Eminence.
As Cardinal Gregory blesses the inside of the building,
