All in all, this experience was definitely a new one for me. How did yours go? Let me know. Isaac Hi Isaac, I heard you are heading back to school soon. Plus, you are already vaccinated!!! Cool, man!!! When was the appointment and which vaccination centre did you go to? Mine was months ago. Which vaccine did you get? How did you feel before and after vaccination? PART 2 : MODEL QUESTIONS 1 You must answer the questions. Write your answer in 125-150 words in an appropriate style. In your class, you have been talking about famous holiday getaway destinations in Malaysia. The government has encouraged Malaysians to help generate the country’s economy by travelling. Your teacher has asked you to write an essay on your choice of a holiday destination in Malaysia. In your essay, write about: • The destination of your choice • The reason for your choice • The benefits you get from the getaway Write your essay using all the notes. My destination of choice would definitely be Langkawi Island. Langkawi is well known for its mesmerising beauty and crystal clear sea water. Undoubtedly, I would say Langkawi is deserving of all the attention because it truly does lives up to the hype it receives. One of the main factors why this destination is my choice is obviously because it is a tax-free destination. It is not an exaggeration to say that the prices of some items can be considered dirt cheap compared to the retail prices that we usually pay. Apart from shopping, there are many other attractions as well, including historical sites, natural attractions and even culinary delights. In addition, there is a myriad of fancy resorts and hotels you can go to, not to mention the reasonable yet comfortable ones too. And many of these hotels offer exciting and interesting sports and nature activities. I think that Pulau Langkawi as a holiday destination has endless benefits. To illustrate, not only can you witness a refreshing sight of nature, you can also grab this opportunity to escape from the bustling city lifestyle. I would say this is absolutely a win-win situation. All in all, our body and mind need to rest every once in a while so Langkawi gets a thumbs up from me as my choice destination!
PART 2 : MODEL QUESTIONS 2 You must answer the questions. Write your answer in 125-150 words in an appropriate style. Your class has been discussing where to go for their post-Covid-19 holiday trip and your teacher has asked you to write an essay about where you would like to go with your family when that happens. In your essay, write about: • The place you have chosen to go • The reason you have chosen to go there Write your essay using all the notes. After the Covid-19 pandemic has died down, my family and I would like to have a holiday on Pulau Tioman. Why? Because there is a lot to do there! First of all, the beaches there have crystal clear water meaning that you can see what’s beneath the waves. This also would help my brother who has an underlying fear of the sea due to the thought that a sea creature might gobble him up while he is swimming. Being able to see what is around him while he is swimming might allay his fears and allow him to enjoy himself without any worries. A holiday trip there would also allow us to do both scuba diving and snorkelling. Remember when I said that the water is crystal clear? This means that you can quite literally swim with the fishes. The underwater scenery is also mesmerising and bewitching due to the coral reefs and a multitude of sea dwellers such as giant clams, sea urchins and tonnes of different fishes. Going for a scuba dive requires a licence though so regrettably I can only do the snorkelling trip around the island. Who knows, maybe I’ll take a course to get a licence just to spend a few hours of diving filled with serenity. Furthermore, the food that is served by the hotels there is surreal. Eating fish that was caught mere hours ago and eating it by the beachside while watching the sun as it sets over the horizon, casting a beautiful reflection on the sea is something that I look forward to. Imagine eating grilled fish marinated with lemon juice and garnished to perfection paired with a glass delicious fresh juice. It’s dinner that’s on par with a dinner in any 5-star hotel. I think these reasons are enough to justify my location of choice as just imagining these things is making me daydream.
PART 2 : MODEL QUESTIONS 3 You must answer the questions. Write your answer in 125-150 words in an appropriate style. You and your friends have been discussing the issue of student coming late to school and being absent or playing truant. Your teacher has asked you to write an essay about how to improve the situation. In your essay, write about: • What the problems are • The reasons for the problem • Ways to overcome them Write an essay using all the notes. Lately, there has been a spike in the number of students coming late to school or being absent. These sudden increases have caused the school administrators to be both enraged and worried. After a discussion with my friends, the main causes of the problem have been identified which include traffic congestion, waking up late and being unmotivated to go to school. The first problem is getting stuck in traffic on the way to school. This is mainly the result of the distance between the school and the home of the student. Having to use highways in the weekday mornings means that the students have to travel alongside thousands of adults rushing to get to work causing the roads to become congested and thus causing the students to arrive late to school. This can be overcome by going out to school early, allowing the students to reach school before the congestion begins. Furthermore, the most common problem among students is waking up late. It is a direct consequence as a result of turning in late. Considering that the human body needs 8 to 10 hours of sleep, sleeping late causes the students to repay the number of hours of sleep which the students need causing them to be late or if awoken too late, absent. To negate this, students need to be responsible for their own actions and try to sleep early. If they fail to do so then they need to sacrifice the amount of sleep they get to get to school early. The final problem is the toughest problem to solve as being unmotivated to go to school stems from the fact that schools are generally not a fun place. This is especially true for schools that have tight rules and standards of procedure causing the students to feel restricted. This, in turn, causes the students to feel unmotivated to go to school hence them coming late to school or being absent. To help the students gain their motivation back and reduce the number of cases of students being late or absent, the school needs to create an environment where the students feel at ease. They need to be motivated to go to school on a daily basis.
PART 2 : MODEL QUESTIONS 4 You must answer the questions. Write your answer in 125-150 words in an appropriate style. You and your friends have been concerned about the cleanliness and service pf the school library, You have decided to write an essay about how to improve the condition of your library. In your essay, write about: • What the problem are • The reason for the problem • Ways to overcome them Write your essay using all the notes. The school library was one of the most used places to study among the students of SM Sains Selangor. Despite this, the library has been neglected these past few years causing a decline in cleanliness and service by the library staff. This in turn caused many of the usual visitors of the library to gradually leave the place never to return again and the decline directly impacted the environment of the library. The school library used to have tables filled with students studying after school but now it is largely abandoned. I have a few ideas on how we can improve the condition of the library back to what it used to be or maybe even better! First and foremost, the library lacks a head librarian. This is because the organisation dissolved a few years back leaving the librarians without a leader since. After the organisation disintegrated, chaos within the circle of librarians ensued causing most of the members to leave and the ones who remained to be in a state of disorganisation. To fi x this, the library needs a new staff that will act as the leader of the remaining librarians. This is to ensure a new organisation be built thus allowing the library to be managed more systematically. Moreover, the library also lacks helpers in terms of librarians amongst the student body. After then organisation dissolved, the number of librarians continued to drop as many members resigned and the number of people applying for the position has been decreasing to almost a stand still. To combat this problem the current members of the librarian team could organise a campaign or create posters to recruit more members. The library committee could also put up the benefits of being a member of the library, for example an annual feast or something along those lines. This could attract others to join the librarian thus increasing the number of helpers. Finally, the library lacks books that can be used by students during study sessions such as history, geography and science books. The fact that many books are outdated also means that the students are consuming false information or information that is irrelevant for the current time. This problem stems from the fact that the lack of funds has led the library to only buy secondhand books or receive books from donations or charity. To overcome this the school must increase the amount of funds directed towards the library to increase the number of books that are provided in the library.
PART 2 : MODEL QUESTIONS 5 You must answer the questions. Write your answer in 125-150 words in an appropriate style. You and your friends have been discussing the importance of having hobbies as teenagers. You have been asked by your English teacher to write an essay about an interesting and unique hobby that you would like to take up. In your essay, write about: • What the interesting and unique hobby is • The reason for your choice • How the hobby can help you as a teenager Write your essay using all the notes. We all know what hobbies are – you know, those fun activities we love to partake in just to distract ourselves from the stresses of life. Hobbies make us feel rejuvenated and satisfied, even when our lives are going through some disappointing phase. Although there are multitudes of different hobbies there is one interesting and unique hobby that I would like to take up which is writing. There are multiple reasons as to why I would like to take up writing and here are a few reasons. First and foremost, the reason why I would like to take up writing is because writing would teach me to become creative and open-minded. This is especially true if I were to write a fantasy story or novel where everything and anything is possible. Imagine a world of fairies and magic; without creativity and open-mindedness you cannot possibly imagine such worlds. By writing, I would force myself to become more flexible and open to possibilities even if it’s absurd or downright bizarre. Moreover, I would like to take up writing as it would teach me to be more patient. This is because writing is not an instantaneous thing nor is it easy. Writing needs time and sometimes a writer could encounter a period where one is unable to write called a ‘writer’s block’. If the writer is not patient, then he would most probably would leave writing as he loses his passion due to the lack of patience. To write a decent story or book you would also need a lot of experience. To gain those experiences you need to spend time, make mistakes and to never ever give up on writing, which of course requires patience. Lastly, I would like to take up writing as it can help me generate income. This may seem trivial but by writing I can generate money via commissions or even royalty if I publish a book. Having a hobby that can generate money would be a lifesaver as I grow up and my expenses increase. The amount of money gained may vary and of course it may not be much but who knows? If I work hard maybe I can be the new JK Rowling. All in all, the reasons why I would take up writing might be childish but those reasons are the ones that motivate me to someday write my own story. Writing would most definitely help me become more patient, creative and finally to have vision.
PART 3 : MODEL QUESTIONS 1 You see this notice on the board at the Counselling Room. Write your article. Being a teenager is one of the most intense phases of one’s life. You will be developing physically and emotionally in your journey to adulthood, and to be better as a person. The big question is, how do teenagers relax? As a teen myself, I personally think teenagers would enjoy catching up with movie and shows the most. For instance, if I were having a rough week and suddenly remembered my favourite show re-runs over the weekend, I’d be pumped and excited to go through my day just by the thought of it. That being said, why do they enjoy it? As we know, teenagers tend to opt for fl ashy and fancy things. Hence, watching blockbusters can offer the rush of adrenaline that they are longing for. Not to forget, each and every film has its own refreshing setting and exciting plot that can help us forget our problems and stress, even if only for a while. It’s easy to see why teenagers would fancy catching up on shows as a form of relaxation. What would be the backlash if teenagers do not relax? There can be a myriad of disadvantages. For example, when a teenager pushes herself too hard without any break, she will be burnt out sooner or later. Other than that, one can even be mentally exhausted and too drained to carry out daily activities. This in turn might affect their studies. As such, we know that not taking time off can be detrimental to teenagers’ mental and physical health in the long term. In a nutshell, clearing one’s mind is a crucial process in our life. It is important to remember that we will sometimes have bad days but relaxing can help remind us, teenagers that every cloud has a silver lining. Articles Wanted! • What is the form of relaxation the teenagers enjoy the most? • Why do they enjoy it? • What are the consequences if teenagers do not relax? PART 3 : MODEL QUESTIONS 2 You saw this notice in a teen magazine. Write your article. “Why should I save money at this age?” is the question teenagers ask themselves every now and then. Saving money is an important building block to financial independence. There is no better feeling than being able to do what you want whenever you want. There are several ways that teenagers can do in order to save money among which include opening up a savings account. A savings account where you can set aside your birthday or graduation money for future emergencies or opportunities is a great way to start saving up. Moreover, some savings accounts will allow you to accrue interest on your deposits, which can help you build up your savings further over time. Besides opening a savings account, teenagers can also save money by tracking their spending. By tracking each expense, you can get a better feel for where your money is going and make sure it's in line with your priorities and goals. Other than that, teenagers can sell their unwanted stuffs so that they can save more money. It doesn't take much to accumulate stuff you no longer need or use such as clothes or books. The good news is that you can very quickly turn unwanted items into extra money by selling them. In conclusion, saving money as a teenager is hard but it’s not impossible. Much thought should be put into it if one aims to get the most benefits from saving money. How To Save Money • Why should teenagers should start saving money? • What can teenagers do to save money? Write an article on how to help teenagers save money. Your article will be published in the magazine.
PART 3 : MODEL QUESTIONS 3 You came across this notice in the apartment bulletin board. Write your article. What is recycling? Every day, we produce a vast amount of waste that ends up in landfills or polluting our oceans. Recycling is one of the most effective ways to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfills and to mitigate the negative impact on the planet. The benefits of recycling the world’s natural resources are finite, and some are in very short supply. At a fundamental level, recycling paper and wood can save trees and forests, recycling plastic means creating less new polluting plastic, and recycling metals means there’s less need for hugely costly mining. The most obvious benefit of recycling is the reduction of landfill waste. Recycling reduces the amount of waste that goes to landfills, making it a vital solution to the problem of overflowing landfills. When we recycle, we give new life to materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Recycling food waste and green waste is a great idea too. When we dispose of waste improperly, it can end up in our oceans and harm marine life. For example, plastic waste can entangle and suffocate sea turtles and other animals. By recycling, we reduce the amount of waste that ends up in our oceans and protect marine life. The steps of recycling includes three essential steps represented by the familiar recycling symbol. The first one is to actually collect the recyclables, which can be done in different ways. Following the collection, recyclables are sent to a recovery facility where they are processed into materials that can be used in manufacturing. Recyclables are then bought and sold just like raw materials would be. The Importance of Recycling • What is the recycling? • How to recycle? • Benefits of recycling Your article will be published in the local newspaper
PART 3 : MODEL QUESTIONS 4 You see this notice on the bulletin board of your local community centre. Write you article. How to Combat Stress By: Nik Zarif Imran What is stress? Stress is a combination of physical, mental, and emotional feelings that result from pressure, worry and anxiety. These pressures are called stressors. Some examples of common stressors are family problems, illness, change of environment, exams, peer pressure and financial problems. According to Microsoft Encarta, stress is a physical, chemical or emotional development that causes strains that can lead to physical illness. So, what are the signs of stress, why does it happen and how can a teenager overcome stress? Signs of stress are easy to miss but if you see someone feeling preoccupied all the time, having difficulty concentrating, and trouble thinking flexibly he or she might have stress. This is because stress forces people to overthink little things causing them to feel irritated, angry and rebellious all the time. They feel as if they have the weight of the world on their shoulders. Avoiding things that include keeping to one’s self, avoiding work, having trouble accepting responsibility, and neglecting responsibility are also signs of mental stress. Firstly, school seems to be the main cause of stress. Teenagers must encounter daily attacks from school, for example the heap of homework they get every day can even be compared to Mount Everest, the difficult exams and high expectations cause them to feel burdened. Students nowadays also get a lot of extra work just to earn extra marks to make up for their low exam marks, some of them also face monstrous bullies that exist everywhere. Just one school bully can cost their lives. Secondly, dysfunctional family institutions are also one of the causes of stress. Some teenagers’ parents fight every single day. Eventually this would make their heart break due to seeing their loved ones fight. Some other teens’ parents might have affairs, leading to a chance of a parent being replaced. Nobody likes it when one parent walks away due to cheating. The emotional rollercoaster would eventually cause the teen to be burdened by stress and sometimes depression. How to Combat Stress • What are the signs of stress? • The reasons for stress among teenagers • Suggestions on how to overcome stress among teenagers Write an article about stress using the points above. Your article will be published in the local newspaper
To overcome stress one should avoid negative thinking. Acknowledge the positive things in your life and begin to re-establish some balance in your emotional register. Avoid focusing on only the bad things that happened during your day but consider the good as well. You should always stop and count your blessings. Write down even the simplest things that you have and enjoy: A roof over your head, a bed to sleep on, food, warmth, security, good health, friends and family. Finally, eating properly is one of the best ways to overcome stress. Your body needs to be healthy, happy and properly fuelled to help you tackle stress. Like it or not, stress is a bodily reaction that reacts to anything that disturbs its natural state meaning that your body may have a profound effect on producing and relieving stress. Hence by eating properly, your body may relieve stress on its own if given enough time.
PART 3 : MODEL QUESTIONS 5 You saw this notice on the school bulletin board. Write your article. Should students be allowed to use handphones in school? Many schools limit or restrict the use of mobile phones. However, there are students who ignore the rules and continue to bring along their mobile phones to school despite the restriction. In my opinion, mobile phones should not be allowed to school. First, mobile phones will bring about distractions to students. In the past, bored students generally entertained themselves with whispering about anything that came to mind. Today, students relieve boredom with the mobile phones. Students engrossed in the mobile phones are unable to pay attention in class. For example, there are distracted when their friends send them text messages and they attempt to reply under their desks. Other than that, they can also play games, browse the Internet, check and update their Facebook pages and so on. This can hardly help them perform better academically. Another reason why mobile phones should be prohibited in schools is because students are able to cheat during examinations using those electronic gadgets. They can store their notes and relevant information on their phones and look at them secretly during tests. It is also possible for them to cheat by using search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing and many more. Besides, mobile phones addiction is a major drawback. Students addicted to mobile phones cannot do without using them, even when they are in class. If the schools permit them to use mobile phones at school, their addiction will very likely worsen. They surf inappropriate websites, post pictures or videos during class. In a nutshell, mobile phones should be banned and not allowed in school. This disadvantages or allowing them in school's far outweigh the advantages. Since mobile phones prevent the students from studying and distract them when they are in class, I do not agree that mobile phones should be allowed in schools. Wanted : Your Opinion To Use or Not to Use Handphones • Should students be allowed to use handphones in school? • Why should they be allowed? • Why should they not be allowed? Write us an article answering the above questions Your article will be featured in the local newspaper.
PART 3 : MODEL QUSTIONS 1 Your teacher has asked you to write a story for your school English Bulletin Board. The story must have the tittle: The Most Difficult Choice of My Life Your story should include: • The difficult choice you had to make • The reason you made that choice • Hot it changed your life Write your story. Choices. An act of choosing between two or more possibilities. In life, there will always be bad choices and also good ones. But what if, there were no good choices and you were left with two, bad and difficult ones? This is exactly what I had to go through on March 3, 2009. Before we delve deeper into the story, you need to know some context as to why I had to make this difficult choice in the first place. As a student, I used to fool around without any care in the world about my future. I would go on dates, play video games, neglect all my responsibilities and studies just because I wanted to enjoy my youth. When SPM came, it was safe to say that I did not do very well thus costing me my safe and stable future as a student. It was then that I had to make a decision; whether to take up a student loan or to work and save enough money to pay for my studies on my own. The day started off like any other day, the birds were chirping, the cicadas were buzzing and the morning atmosphere was filled with the fresh smell of dew. I woke up at six, excited to return to school albeit only to take my SPM results. To be able to meet with all my friends after three months of sitting idly at home was a literal godsend. Immediately after waking up, I stripped myself of clothes before going for a shower. I took my time, knowing that all students must be at school at eight. After showering, I ate breakfast with my parents at the dining table. All of us were jittery and anxious about my results but I assured them that I would at least get 7 A’s. After finishing dinner and cleaning up my parents and I made our way to my school. Arriving at school, my parents allowed me to socialise with my friends as they understood that I might have a lot of catching up to do. I talked to my best friends and then chatted for a few minutes before the counters opened and we were able to take our results. Waiting anxiously for my name to be called, I walked back and forth while biting my nails. “Muhammad Akmal Bin Haitam!” my teacher called. I almost jumped when my name was called but I managed to hide my surprise as I walked towards the counter. The teacher looked at me with a poker face, probably trying her best to hide her happiness for
having such a smart student like me. With overwhelming confidence I signed the papers and took my examination slip and what was written on it shocked me. “Only 2 A’s?” I muttered. My parents came to my side, smiling broadly but as soon as they saw the slip their smiles faded and we went to our car quietly. It was then that I realised that with results this bad, I didn’t know what course I could apply for. There was no way that I could get into a good college like this and that was when it dawned upon me; I was a failure. I locked myself in my room, requesting some time alone from my parents to draw up a new plan. I researched every single possibility that I could have but frankly, there was not much. I was stuck between two difficult choices; Whether to take up a student loan or to work. I was in a dilemma, taking up a student loan would be a smart choice but could I promise myself that the same thing that happened during SPM would not happen again? Working also has its pros and cons but those two options were the only viable ones. After a few days of thinking I decided that working might be the best option. I arrived at this conclusion after understanding that taking up a student loan was almost the same as gambling. You borrow tens of thousands of ringgit, graduate and then you have to find a job. If you can’t find a job that can pay back your loan, then you would be in more debt. This means that even if you graduate you would have to work for years to pay back the money that you owe. This is not to say that working right after SPM without any qualification has no risks, but if you calculate the probability of failure it always depends on how hardworking the person is. Many SPM graduates have managed to make more money than university graduates. Why? Because instead of studying and burying their face in a book, they gather experience from their full-time jobs. These experiences are then used to create their own company in which they then hire these university graduates. Billionaires such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs all managed to obtain their wealth without the need of a college degree. This shows that working might be a better option. It may not be for everyone, but it is the case for me. Moving forward to the present time, I am currently the head of Akmal Tech Co which deals with machineries and technological advancements in weaponry. The road in which I took to get here was not easy, but my failure in SPM has taught me to never give up, to work hard and to plan ahead for the future so that we do not regret our decision. My life now has never been better, and I am glad that I made the choice to work after getting my results instead of taking a student loan. Who knows, if I had made a different choice I might still be a corporate slave still trying to clear his debts despite having worked for ten years.
PART 3 : MODEL QUESTIONS 2 Your teacher has asked you to write a story for your school English Bulletin Board. The story must have the tittle: The Most Memorable Day of My Life Your story should include: • A description of the day • The reason the day was memorable to you Write your story. The Most Memorable Day of My Life A Weekend in New York Mum handed my sister and me our passports and boarding tickets, hugged us tightly for what seemed like five minutes, and waved goodbye to us as tears trickled down her cheeks. It sounds strange to say this but I couldn’t stop smiling, and neither could Sarah, my 19-year-old sister who was my guardian for the weekend. She was such a laugh, and always had something funny to say about everything. I knew it was going to be a fun and unforgettable weekend. The plane was due to depart from Heathrow to New York at one that Friday afternoon of the 13th of October. As we sat laughing and joking at the departure lounge our flight number was displayed on the screen, and next to it the word ‘Boarding’ flashed. It was time to leave. We picked up our hand luggage and headed to gate number 13. ‘Typical!’ I said to myself in my head, ‘Out of all 50 gates, we have to board through the unluckiest number of them all!’ Still, I’m not a very superstitious person; I’m just not that keen on flying. And then we were off. We caught a taxi to the building and entered a lift which took us halfway up the Empire State Building. We then had to swap to another lift because the building is so tall that having only one lift would cause the cables to snap. Being told this by the guide didn’t exactly help with my fear of heights. Finally, we reached the top and the view was just breathtaking. I had never seen anything like it. I stood there speechless for about thirty minutes, and looked out over the city for miles. It was a surreal experience and views that imprinted my mind. Next up, we had to catch a ferry to Staten Island to see the worldfamous Statue of Liberty. I took pictures but I knew the photos wouldn’t show the astounding statue that stood before me. We caught a ferry back to the mainland and walked around Times Square. It held a resemblance to Piccadilly Circus, but was somewhat more exciting. We both looked like typical tourists with our huge bags, maps and cameras but everyone around was friendly and helped us with directions. It was getting late in the afternoon and we had been shopping for an hour or so and ended up in a nail bar.
“This is why you have to live life to the fullest and take every opportunity that comes along. It is not every day you get taken for a weekend shopping to New York, is it?” she then smiled at me and gave me a kiss on the cheek. She was always capable of putting a smile back on my face, no matter how I felt. My sister had always been known as a joker and so to hear her say something like this really meant a lot. We got back to the hotel mid-afternoon and packed up our bags. Our flight departed at six that evening and we were on our way home. We landed at Heathrow at one in the morning. I slept for most of the plane and car journey home. I walked in the front of the door of my house and inhaled deeply, it smelt of home, and I smiled to myself. The holiday was really fun and it had taught me a lot. It brought me closer to my sister and the advice she gave me at ground zero will stay with me forever, and the new experiences will stay with me forever too. I hope to return back there in the near future, to relive my happy memories.
PART 3 : MODEL QUESTIONS 3 Your teacher has asked you to write a story for your school English Bulletin Board. The story must have the tittle: The Most Enjoyable Day of My Life Your story should include: • A description of the day • The reason the day was enjoyable Write your story. The Most Enjoyable Day of My Life It was a day like any other. The sun was shining through the slithers on the curtains of my bedroom window, directly shining upon my glorious slumbering face. Of course, I was displeased by the interruption and so I decided to cover my whole body with a blanket. As soon as I began drifting back to the realm of dreams my phone began to vibrate intensely as dozens, no, hundreds of messages began flooding in. Annoyed, I picked up the phone and squinted my eyes trying to read the messages on the screen. “Where are you?”, “Earth to Nick are you there?” and other messages that seemed as if they were trying to get in contact with me were piling on top of each other. That was when it dawned upon me... I had an outing today! I got up, immediately feeling awake due to the sudden adrenaline rush and stripped off my clothes as I went to shower. While taking a bath I could hear my phone vibrating once more as I assumed another wave of messages were being sent to confirm that I was indeed still alive. I lathered my body with soap, my hair with shampoo while also brushing my teeth to minimise the time taken for me to fi nish showering and as I was rinsing everything off the doorbell rang. In an even more panicked state I quickly dried myself and wore any clothes that looked appropriate for an afternoon outing with my friends and sprinted down the stairs. Arriving in front of the door, I took a moment to calm myself and comb my hair before opening the door with a smile plastered on my face. Standing opposite of me were my three best friends, Misa, Wilson and Ameerul all with a grumpy look. I tried to apologise but they all waved it off and signalled me to follow. Feeling bad and a tad guilty for making them wait, I tried to lift up the sour mood as we entered the car that Misa’s dad had provided along with a driver. “Um, so what are we going to do today?” I asked sheepishly. They all ignored my question and played with their mobile phones. I kept silent, respecting the tense atmosphere as it was my fault to begin with. The driver looked at Misa who was sitting next to him and whispered something that was incoherent to me, Misa nodded with a hint of a smile on her face. As soon as she nodded, the driver began driving to whatever location he was told to go. The ride was silent as if we were in a morgue and soon, I fell asleep. I woke up about an hour later only to find myself being stared at by the trio. It was confusing to say the least. “What are you
guys doing?” I asked, genuinely worried about what was going on, and they smiled. “Do you remember what day it is today is?” Ameerul asked. I thought about it long and hard before sudden reality began to sink in. “It’s... my birthday?” Immediately after saying that, all four doors of the vehicle opened simultaneously as I saw a crowd gathering around my transport. I was escorted outside the vehicle by Misa, who was smiling broadly. Still in a state of confusion I looked at the crowd only to notice that they consisted of my friends, family and teachers! “Surprise!” They cheered, before they started singing the happy birthday song. At that point I was almost in tears but what happened next broke the dam. Wilson and Ameerul were pushing a trolley which held the largest birthday cake I had ever seen. On top of the cake were 18 candles marking my age with the words ‘With love” written on the cake. I looked at my best friends and with tears running down my face, I uttered the words “Thank you”. After cutting, distributing and eating the humongous cake came the party. Turns out Misa had booked the whole Lexus Grand Hotel for the celebration including the facilities and staff. Considering that Misa was the daughter of a conglomerate head this was not that surprising as she could even buy a whole country if she wanted to. The first thing we did was hang out at the arcade, playing all the games there ranging from arcade shooters to dance battles and even snooker. After playing for a few hours it was already dinner time. The staff escorted everyone to the dining room where food literally covered every inch of the table. I enjoyed the juicy foie gras, salted caviar and the scrumptious crumpets. The dinner service also included a jazz band that played as we ate, creating a serene atmosphere that was filled with elegance. After dinner, the highlight of the celebration took place; the fi reworks show. Beautiful colours filled the night sky as hundreds of fi reworks were launched, implanting the view into my memory. At 12 o’clock in the morning, my birthday ended and so did the celebration. Ameerul, Wilson and I were escorted to our VIP suite where we chatted until we fell asleep while Misa was escorted to her penthouse nearby. To be honest, after Wilson and Ameerul fell asleep, I was still wide awake. That day was singlehandedly the most bizarre day of my life and yet it was also one of the most enjoyable days. My birthday was celebrated grandly by my friends, family and even teachers. I got to taste exquisite food prepared by the chefs of a well-known hotel. I got to eat the largest cake I had ever seen and I played in the arcade for hours and hours with my besties. The reasons why the day was enjoyable were seemingly infinite. As I began to tear up once more, I uttered the words, “This is the most enjoyable day of my life.”
PART 3 : MODEL QUESTIONS 4 Your teacher has asked you to write a story for a school English Bulletin Board. Th story must have the tittle: My Most Embarrassing Situation Your story should include: • The most embarrassing situation you have experience • What happened after the incident Write your story. Everyone has been embarrassed at one time or another. It is that moment in time when you wish the earth would open up and swallow you. The anxiety and discomfort felt during that time which may only last a few seconds feels like time has stood still. I remember so well when I had my most embarrassing moment. I was in Form 4 and it was during the school recess. The minute the bell rang for recess, I rushed to the toilet because I had been controlling my urges since class started. I didn’t want to miss class because the lesson taught that morning was to include tips for the forthcoming examination. Without realising, I had rushed to the girls’ toilet. The prolonged control and an upset stomach made worse by two glasses of cold milk in the morning made me grunt and groan in what I thought in what I thought was the privacy of the cubicle. I thought I heard giggling outside and wondered why the giggles sounded unusually near. A few minutes later I came out the cubicle and discovered my horror that I had entered the girls’ toilet. To make matters worse, the few girls standing outside didn’t even turn away when I came out. Instead they looked down at me, then only they turned quickly away. Horror of horrors, I had forgotten to zip up! could have! They news of my predicament spread like wild fire throughout school. I was truly the talk of the town. I felt like I could either walk around feeling perpetually self-conscious and embarrassed or I could turn the situation round, perhaps even to my advantage. I remembered my mother’s words that ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’. So I decided to make fun of myself, to laugh at myself too. It works. Everyone got bored after a while and nobody teased me after that. It was indeed an eye-opening experience for me. I have learnt that when people laugh at you, you should laugh along. You must not take yourself seriously. Learn to look at yourself through other people’s eyes and you will realise that most of the time when they laugh at you, they just want to have some fun. They mean no harm. If you can make people laugh, it’s like bringing sunshine into their lives and as someone said, ‘those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.
PART 3 : MODEL QUESTIONS 5 Your teacher has asked you to write a story for a school English Bulletin Board. Th story must have the tittle: My Earliest Memory Your story should include: • The earliest memory you remembered • What is the story bout Write your story. First memories of oneself can be easily confused with fabricated memories made by looking at old pictures, movies, and hearing stories related to one’s personal history. This is the case for me: I have seen so many home movies, heard so many stories about myself, and seen so many pictures about my early childhood, I do not know for certain what my first memory is in actuality. Since I cannot pinpoint my first memory exactly, I will unfold a series of memories that were the earliest in my childhood. I remember at night looking through the large glass windows of our living room at the huge pine trees and douglas fir trees, which brushed against our white fence. The trees would sway sometimes violently in the wind, as it was common in Seattle at night. I would watch the trees dance, believing to see many frightening and strange shapes forming in the dark, as if the trees were alive in a conscious way. The trees would shift into the types of monsters my imagination dreamed up. I would tell my mother about the shapes and forms, but as a common mother would do, she tried to calm me down instead of play along with my eerie fixation. Another sharp early memory of mine was when I examined my body. I was curious, as most children are, about the texture and form of the body we are given at birth. From an early age, I had four operations: two open heart surgeries, and two hernia surgeries. I would feel my scars, which scale up my chest and travel near my groin as if they were landscapes, burned into my skin until age would fade them away. Besides scars, I would relish over the smallest of particulars about my eyes, which have hazel lines shooting out from the pupils. I would examine my life state through my eyes: I could see how I was on the whole through them. My hands were also a point of curiosity for me: my left hand is significantly smaller than my right hand because of surgeries. Comparing them was and still is a bit of a fetish of mine. I learned to ride a bicycle quite early, though I do not remember the exact age. My father was a professional cyclist at one point, and he wanted his son to be keen in the sport as well. But I remember my first attempt to ride a bicycle without training wheels ending disastrously and humorously. Out on the main street next to our house, where there were almost no cars driving around back then due to less population, I started out okay on a small child-bike. My balance was fine from the start, but then I got overexcited
and lost my balance, eventually smashing into our mailbox. Though my dad was concerned about my safety at first, after he saw that nothing serious had happened to me, he laughed without hesitation and was poking fun at me. I did not feel discouraged—in fact, I was laughing along after a few seconds. I have many more scattered memories that could count as first memories, even though they are mixed in with my impressions from watching home movies, seeing pictures, and hearing stories about my childhood. We may not know our first memory for certain, but once we try to dig it up, the world we lived in as a child begins to pour through the lens of visual thought, bringing back the atmosphere of this time into the present moment, like an incense smoke that softly curls around our present senses.
PART 3 : MODEL QUESTIONS 1 You recently saw this notice in a newspaper. Write your review. Review: The Best Fast Food Restaurant The best fast food restaurant is undoubtedly Kentucky Fried Chicken or KFC for short! If you ask me what I would rate the franchise out of 5, I would tell you that it is 5 out of 5 a million times over. One of the reasons why I think it is the best is the fact that KFC cooks the best fried chicken in the fast food industry. The fried batter is crispy and crunchy, the chicken is juicy and scrumptious and the taste of everything in general is absolutely perfect. It does not matter which part of the chicken you decide to eat, every bite brings joy and that is a fact. Furthermore, the price offered by the joint is outrageously cheap compared to other fast food chains. Imagine, a burger, a piece of fried chicken, French fries and soda will only cost about RM9.00. That there is a full stomach with extras for later that cost half the price of that offered by other fast food restaurants such as McDonalds or Wendy’s. For someone who is currently struggling during the economic crisis, this means that KFC acts as my lifeline during these tough times due to Covid-19. This also include many university and college students that have student loans to pay or working adults that work minimum wage. Moreover, the customer service provided by the fast food joint is simply the best. The policy, “customer is always right” has never been broken since I can remember and quite frankly I am impressed. If there’s something wrong with your food or there’s a mistake in your order, they will gladly refund you or make you another set of food. Of course you will have to prove your purchase via a receipt but that is it, no drama and no hassle. The employees there are also kind and polite towards the customers and there has even been a video of a KFC manager treating a homeless man to lunch with his own money as the man was starving. All in all I would definitely recommend it to everyone I know because the fried chicken there is delicious, the food sets are cheap and the staff are friendly not only to the customers but also to the general public. Best Fast Food Restaurant Everyone loves fast food. Which is the best? Send us your review. Why do you think it is the best? Would you recommend? Why?

If so, we want to hear about it! • Tell us more about the restaurant. • include details about the atmosphere, the food, and the service. • Would you recommend the restaurant to others? Why? Write your review. I recently had the pleasure of dining at “Delicious Eats,” a small, family-owned restaurant located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The atmosphere of the restaurant was cozy and inviting, with warm lighting and wooden decor. Upon being seated, we were greeted by our friendly server, who promptly brought out a basket of fresh, warm bread. I decided to try the “Signature Steak,” which was a succulent, medium-rare ribeye served with a side of garlic mashed potatoes and vegetables. The flavors were well-balanced and the portion size was generous. My dining companion ordered the “Seafood Pasta,” which was a medley of shrimp, scallops, and lobster in a creamy tomato sauce. The seafood was fresh and perfectly cooked, and the pasta was al dente. In addition to the excellent food, the service at Delicious Eats was top-notch. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and made great recommendations, and he checked on us throughout the meal to make sure we had everything we needed. He even offered to refill our drinks before we could ask. Aside from the great food and service, Delicious Eats also has some unique features that set it apart from other restaurants. For example, they have a daily happy hour with discounted drinks and appetizers, and they occasionally host live music events. Overall, my experience at Delicious Eats was exceptional. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. With its unique features and high-quality dining experience, I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience.

Life of Pi Movie review The movie follows Pi’s journey as he survives 227 days on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger, Richard Parker, after the sinking of a cargo ship. Pi is left stranded in the Pacific Ocean with no food, water, or shelter. The film explores Pi’s survival skills, his relationship with the tiger, and his faith in God. It also shows the audience how Pi’s experiences change him and shape his beliefs. The movie teaches us that even in the darkest and most dire of situations, there is always hope and a way to survive. The film also emphasize the importance of faith and trust in oneself and in a higher power. The story of Pi’s journey is a powerful and uplifting one that leaves the audience with a sense of hope and inspiration. One of the things I enjoyed most about the movie “Life of Pi” was the stunning visuals. The film was shot in 3D and the use of special effects to create the shipwreck, ocean, and animals was truly impressive. The filmmakers did an excellent job of immersing the audience in the story, making it feel as though we were right there on the lifeboat with Pi. Overall, I found the film to be a visually stunning and emotionally powerful experience, that teaches valuable lessons about the human spirit and the power of faith. In conclusion, I highly recommend Life of Pi to others. The film is a visually stunning masterpiece that tells a powerful and moving story. The acting is superb, the cinematography is breathtaking, and the story is both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant. Send us your review. • Say about the interior cafe. • Would you recommend this cafe to your mates? Why? The best review will be published in the Time Out magazine. Nook Cafe House Review This Nook House is located in Kota Kinabalu street near the cafe-club “Happiness”. The interior helps to create a relaxed home atmosphere. It is a small cafe, which specializes in serving coffee and desserts with a small and simple dining room. You can find different types of coffee there such as espresso, cappuccino, latte, black coffee, coffee with cognac, liqueur and some others. Also, this cafe provides all kinds of drinks alcoholic and non-alcoholic, such as juice, mineral water and various types of tea. The cafe’s menu is rather diverse. You can eat salads, fish and meat dishes; tasty cakes, rolls and pies with different fillings fruits apples, oranges, grapefruits and lemons cut in small pieces; sandwiches and pancakes with various syrups and sauces; sushi and a variety of ice-cream, that can be with fruit sweet syrups, nuts and chocolate. The interior of this cafe is rather cosy and comfortable. Inside the cafe, one can observe several small wooden tables without table-cloths, wooden chairs, and nice soft sofas. There are stands with sugar, salt and paper napkins on the tables. Near the entrance, there is a large mirror, therefore the visitors have an opportunity to look at themselves. Along the walls are wooden cases with some pictures and photos. You can always hear unostentatious and melodic music there. The waiters are rather neat, friendly and polite. Usually, the order is ready quickly, and the visitors don’t wait for a long time. Unfortunately, I can’t remember, when this cafe starts its work, but I know that they close up usually at 1 o’clock am. Also, it is allowed to smoke there, but only after 7 o’clock pm. In the evening some visitors ask the waiter to bring them an ashtray so that they can drink a cup of fresh coffee with a cigarette. The prices in this cafe are not very high. The cost of a cup of coffee varies from Rm8 to Rm15 and a glass of juice is Rm8.Usually, I prefer to order several cups of coffee, tasty ice-cream, and some sweet deserts puddings, pancakes, pies, etc. In the middle of the cafe, one can see a small bar with a variety of alcohol drinks, mineral waters, and juices. The room itself is looking not very large, yet it is bright, clean and pleasing to the eye. So you can easily enjoy yourself in this lovely place. In conclusion I really recommend this cafe to my mates.
PART 3 : MODEL QUESTIONS 5 You see this notice in a community magazine. Write your book review. Book Review Required! Have you recently read a good book? With the holidays fast approaching, helpful reviews of books to read are welcome. • Brief synopsis of the book • Why I enjoy the book • Conclusion 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ by John Boyne ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ written by author John Boyne is a moving story set during the Holocaust. This historical fiction novel was also adapted into a movie of the same name. The main characters in the book are Bruno, the son of a Nazi official and Shmuel, a Jewish boy held in a concentration camp. When Bruno first saw the camp, the prisoners' uniforms looked like ‘striped pyjamas’ to him. While exploring the fence surrounding the camp, Bruno meets Shmuel on the other side of the fence and the two strike up an unlikely friendship. Once I started reading, it was very difficult to put it down as the story hooked me. I like how the story focused on the perspectives of children and highlights their innocence. The story also emphasises how friendship knows no boundaries. While the book started quite light at the beginning, it is heart-wrenching by the time it ends. I enjoy books with cautionary tales like this as it contains a lot of moral lessons. If you’re worried about the language, don’t be. The book is written in simple English which made it very easy to understand. I didn’t find myself needing to look up many words in the dictionary. ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ is also not too long, so you can easily finish reading it within a week. In conclusion, I would highly recommend this book as it tells a story with deep meanings that anyone can reflect on and learn something about.

PART 3 : MODEL QUESTIONS 3 You are very disappointed by the conditions and services provided by your school canteen. You decide to write a report to inform your school principal about the poor conditions and services of the canteen. These would include: • insufficient table and benches • food and drinks not covered • too little food counters • cold food – not fresh • rude canteen workers Report about the School Canteen I am writing this report is to draw your attention regarding the school canteen. Many of the students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Permata are unhappy about the conditions at the school canteen. There were lots of complaints regarding this issue. In the first place, there are insufficient tables and benches. Our school has a student population of over 1 000. There is only one period of recess time for all forms. More than 80 per cent of the students go to the canteen during recess to buy food and drinks. Unfortunately, there are only about twenty-five tables and fifty benches which can accommodate less than half the number of students. As a result, many students have to stand while eating. The food sold at the canteen not only expensive but lacks of variety. The menu is the same every day. For the past five years, ever since the present canteen management took over, students go back to the same food. The hygiene and preparation of food leave a lot to be desired. The food and drinks are not covered. They way canteen attendants dress speak volume about hygiene. With their lackadaisical attitude, the food they sell would one way or the other become contaminated. My fourth complaint about the canteen pertains to the etiquette of the canteen workers. They are rude and arrogant. They often shout at students. The students are always on the receiving end of their bad moods. We hope that conditions at the canteen will improve. The canteen should provide better amenities. There should also be a different menu everyday so that students will not have to taste the same food day in and day out. Cleanliness should be given top priority. We hope that you will look into our complaints and take steps to remedy the situation. The students are prepared to boycott the canteen if their complaints go unheeded. Reported by: Malik Malik bin. Mohd Jalil
PART 3 : MODEL QUESTIONS 4 Your school library is in a bad state and many of the students have been complaining about it. As the Secretary of your school’s Reading Club, you have been asked to write a report to the Principal to inform him about the problem and to suggest solutions. Include the following points in your report: · old books books in poor conditions · insufficient chairs and tables · media equipment is not functioning · inefficient and lazy librarian To: The Principal, SMK Panglima Bukit Gantang, Kerian, Perak Poor Conditions and Services of the School Library I am writing this report to draw your attention to the poor conditions and services of our school library. Firstly, the collection of library books needs to be expanded and improved upon. Many of the books are so old that they are out of-date and in poor condition, with torn or missing pages. Secondly, the seating arrangements are inadequate. Only 12 chairs have been provided in our library for a school of more than 200 students. Furthermore, many of the chairs and tables are rickety and the tabletops are all so deeply scratched that it is difficult to write on them. It would also be much more conducive to readers if some easy chairs were provided, so pupils will able to relax while reading. Thirdly, the media equipment in the library is not functioning. As far as I know, it has been out-of-order since January last year and has not been repaired since then. Finally the school librarians arc rude and unhelpful. To quote just one example, when asked for help in finding a book, one librarian responded, “Find it yourself. Do you think I am your mother?” Surely, librarians should be more willing to assist the students. One of the objectives of our club is to encourage reading among the students of the school. As we realise that many of the students will have little access to good reading material apart from the school library we hope that the conditions in our library can be improved. ………………….. (Noor Aishah bt Mohamad Rasol) Secretary School Reading Club

They were from Japan, China, India, England, Australia and Scotland. Their age group was between 16 to 17 years old. The main reason for the visit was good for international relations. It was also aimed to expose our school students to different cultures in the world. The organizing team had arranged three beach-side bungalows to accommodate the international students. A number of activities were carried out during the visit. We had cooking lessons with the participant. A demonstration for making ‘roti canai’, a popular Indian Cuisine, took place in which many international students excitedly joined in the trial lessons. Next, we had traditional games sessions. The foreign students learnt ‘congkak’ and kite-flying. To add excitement to the programme, a traditional dance show was held. The participants were put into groups with our local students to perform various traditional dance in Malaysia like ‘Joget’ , ‘Zapin’ , and ‘Ngajat’ . All the activities were fun and filled with loud laughter. Majority of the international students commented on our beautiful beaches. Throughout the stay, they witnessed the beautiful sunset from their homestay. Many of them also expressed their admiration on our multiracial society living in harmony.
