PREFACE

This book explains mKitchen IIUM students journey in mKitchen by
integrating food entrepreneurship with Budi Sejahtera. The
students started the journey with in-class training on
entrepreneurship, business plan development, digital marketing,
and cash management. Then, the students had the cooking
demonstration on Turkish delights. One month has been allocated
for both process and content phases of training. Then, the
students had the pre-internship demonstration at Wadi Budi
before a month-long of the internship during Ramadan 1443.

CHAPTER 1

BUDI SEJAHTERA

Mkitchen is a platform to learn and demonstrate “Budi Sejahtera.” The term
manifests the aspiration, vision, and mission of the International Islamic
University Malaysia as the Garden of Knowledge and Virtue or “Taman Ilmu
dan Budi.” The graduates carry the torch of “Insan Sejahtera” to widespread
“Budi Sejahtera.”

“Budi Sejahtera” is two words used frequently in Bahasa Melayu to reflect
peace, knowledge, and virtue. “Orang Berbudi Kita Berbahasa, Orang
Memberi Kita Merasa,” has been said naturally in giving and taking of kindness
and generosity.

This pantun (poem) has been used for centuries, but it is still ever green. The
original narrative of this pantun was related to socio-economics of the Riau
Islands people in Indonesia, but the essence of budi in this pantun is always
relevant to remind people to create and leave good legacy in life.

Gunung Daik bercabang Tiga
Hancur Badan dikandung Tanah

Another popular pantun is about the need to invest in budi for the civilisation
sustainability.

In the mean-time, budi is always accompanied with bahasa

Broadly speaking, budi is a composite of knowledge, comprehension and
application of knowledge with manners. In every day conversation, the word of
budi has never absent in reminding others about the need to do good, to be
virtuous, to be nice, to be right, and to be beneficial to others at all times.

“Sejahtera” is also not strange in the daily conversation. In fact, every speech is
beginning with the greetings of peace or “salam sejahtera” and “selamat
sejahtera,” The Government of Malaysia has taken “sejahtera” approach to
address the pandemic covid-19. Even the tracing application is known as
“Mysejahtera” has been used to trace movement and to stop the spread of covid-
19.

The vaccination program also used “sejahtera” approach in persuading all the
population in Malaysia to get the vaccination. Not just once, but three times.
MySejahtera has been used to register, to track and to make follow up with
Premier Dose 1, Premier Dose 2, and Booster Dose.

“Sejahtera” is also closely related to the practices of Islam. The five pillars of
Islam and six pillars of Iman have been intimately related with the very
fundamental spirit of the faith, i.e., Islam.

Sejahtera term also has been aligned well in other socio-economic aspects such
as sejahtera leadership to enable leadership is bringing social welfare and
happiness.

Why Budi Sejahtera?

Every action is counted based on our intention, sincerity and integrity. Budi
Sejahtera is related to heart.

Narrated Al-Nu„man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him), I heard the
Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying, “Both legal and illegal things
are evident but in between them there are doubtful (suspicious) things and most
of the people have no knowledge about them. So whoever saves himself from
