THURSDAY, 7 APRIL 2022 – DAY 4
“No such thing is called giving up, anxiety, pressure, and being
pushed in us. We like it very much, we put our best effort into it, and
we have nothing to worry about because we firmly believe in Allah,
the Most Merciful, the Most Powerful.”
“This is our amanah that was entrusted to us by our trainers,
coaches, and educators who wanted us to be insan sejahtera through
asnaf entrepreneurship mkitchen. Once we have decided, we will
pursue it. Yes, today has entered into 4th day of this bazaar. The first
day was amazing, we could sell out in one hour. Some customers
could not taste our signature food and beverage. So they would come
on the next day. It was a challenge to start off our business in the
presence of heavy rain. No customer could come to our stall. And
today too, we started our stall with heavy rain. But not with our heavy
heart. Our heart is always sejahtera, Insha Allah.”

CHAPTER 6
PRACTICAL FOR FREE FOOD

mKitchen food entrepreneurship has two main objectives, firstly is to
learn on cooking and distributing food for the needy, and secondly is
to cook and sell to the public. Food entrepreneurship has vast
opportunities for business and employment. This is essential for
virtuous economic growth.

Unemployment is not desirable to the economy and the society.
Graduate unemployment is another issue in higher education. A
sejahtera context empowers students with the ability to create
employment for themselves and others. The budi ilmu prepares
students for employment in the market. However, the market is
unable to provide employment to all graduates.

Budiman students with budi ilmu sejahtera are able to create
employment and help others to end poverty and to achieve zero
hunger in the society. Practical training for free food ventures is part
of Budiman Mkitchen IIUM students‟ food entrepreneurs training.

The students have decided to cook for free food on 15 April 2022.
The students generated the idea for the free food internship with
Sensei Kiyai Haji Prof Dzuljastri. The students applied the design
thinking and system thinking in generating ideas for the free food
ventures. Figure 6.1 shows the deliberation with Sensei.

66

Figure 6.1: Ideation session with Sensei

Students presented the idea to Sensei Kiyai Haji Prof Dr Dzuljastri
about the practical training to cook and distribute free food. They
designed a poster (Figure 6.2).

Then, the students composed content copy write up for crowd fund
raising. Figure 6.3 shows the copywriting of mKitchen Free Food for

After agreeing with the date, the students sought permission from the

Student Development Division (STADD) who is the custodian of

kitchen facilities at Wadi Budi. At this training and incubation stage,

students have to use the kitchen at Wadi Budi. Once they are

competent and stable enough to operate at their own kitchen, then

they could rent a space at the municipal shop lots nearby IIUM or a

space within the university commercial area.

68

Cooking Venture

These students purchased the raw materials for cooking. They are
now more independent in managing the purchases and kitchen
operations. Figure 6.4 shows the cooking venture at Wadi Budi

Safety first
Safety is always first and foremost in the kitchen. Safety then
accompanied with health and hygiene. The mKitchen students have
been trained to adhere to the safety, health and hygiene kitchen
environment. Figure 6.5 shows the handling of safety measures at
mKitchen.

Figure 6.5: The handling of safety measure at mKitchen

Wadi Budi has huge kitchen facilities for students activities in
cullinery. This is part of the university credited co-curricular activities
for students. Instantly, the student shared a pantun, a biblohtherapic
expression in Malay tradition.

Beli Beras Beli Talas
Beli di Pasar Hari Selasa
Kerja Keras Pasti Dibalas
Semoga Sukses Sepanjang Masa

70

Everyone aims for success. However, every success should be done in
sejahtera manner. Any fasad, ill-mannered, illegal and unethical
behaviour should be avoid. The pantun reflects the situation in the
kitchen.

Bila bertiup angin utara
Berlabuh cepat supaya selamat

Bila hidup ingin sejahtera
Jauhkan sifat dengki khianat

Ta‟awun is emphasised in the kitchen too.

Sungguh enak kacang polong
Rasanya gurih menggugah selera
Hidup bertetangga saling menolong
Agar lingkungan damai sejahtera

Then, the students packed the food for distribution and delivery to the
poor and needy students.

This is the premium and signature food prepared by the mkitchen
IIUM students known as “The Bomb Chick.” Even a little lady
customer gave a thumbs up to the dish.

71

Cooking skill combines ilm, budi, „afiyyah and hikmah. All aspects,
explicit, implicit and tacit, integrate ilm, budi, „afiyyah and hikmah.
Like the saying of an old pantun.

Apa guna berkain batik
Kalau tidak memakai capal
Apalah guna berhias cantik
Kalau tak pandai menumbuk sambal

More importantly, budi sejahtera in cooking for rahmatan lil „alamin.
To lead the way and to lead the world.

Burung pipit buring kedidi
Hinggap di pokok tepian sawah

Jika hidup tidak berbudi
Ibarah pokok tidak berbuah.

Figure 6.6 shows the expression of budi sejahtera in “Bomb Chick”.

72

Figure 6.6: The expression of budi sejahtera in “Bomb Chick”

Customer Testimony: Adik Mukrimah enjoyed her “The Bomb
Chick.” The box was very presentable, environmental friendly and
attractive for Adik Mukrimah. She could not wait to taste “The Bomb
Chick.” She could see white rice, fried chicken, salad and butter milk
sauce. She just had too pour the butter milk sauce into her white rice
and ate with the fried chicken and salad. After eating, she gave a
wonderful testimony that this menu will be part of her iftar and sahur
menu in Ramadan.
After enjoying the food “Bomb Chick,” immediately a pantun to
complement the food.

Kelapa Bali di tepi semak
Pokok pulasan di tepi cerun
Enak sekali bomb chick lemak
Makanan mkitchen warisan temurun
Sejahtera packing also uses ilm, budi, „afiyyah and hikmah.

73

Kain berlipat dalam Istana
Pakaian puteri raja kayangan
Sepatah nasihat ilmu yang berguna

Secubit budi jadi kenangan

Kalau hendak menyirat jala
Benang kusut cepat dilepas
Kalau hendak berbuat pahala

Tak payah diuji orang pun tahu.

Distribution time

Prior to distribution, Sensei Kiyai Haji Prof Dr Dzuljastri gave words
of budi sejahtera afiyah hikmah. In his remarks, he reminded budi is
about being virtuous after acquiring ilm (knowledge) of fard ain
(obligatory knowledge) and fard kifayah (secondary level obligatory
knowledge). In fact, mKitchen is a fard or obligatory responsibility
for Muslim to end poverty and to achieve zero hunger. These two
goals have been stated in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs). The sejahtera is the spirituality part in budi and ilm to gain
„afiyah (goodness and wellness) and hikmah (wisdom). Sensei is a
title of spiritual educator in Japanese virtue tradition. Kiyai Haji is a
title of spiritual educator in Madrasah (Islamic traditional school of
ilm and budi). Figure 6.9 shows the sharing of words of wisdom from
Sensei Kiyai Haji Prof Dr Dzuljastri.

From asnaf to another asnaf. The “Bomb Chick” food and the “Deep
Blue Ocean” beverage are the signature menu designed, validated and
triangulated by the students and other customers. Giving free food is
not giving no quality food. Asnaf deserves quality food as well.

of KENMS, IIUM.
